Relaxation dynamics and interrupted coarsening in irrationally frustrated superconducting arrays

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium relaxation behaviors of two-dimensional superconducting arrays are investigated via numerical simulations at low temperatures in the presence of incommensurate transverse magnetic fields, with frustration parameter f= (3-\sqrt{5})/2. We find that the non-equilibrium relaxation, beginning with random initial states quenched to low temperatures, exhibits a three-stage relaxation of chirality autocorrelations. At the early stage, the relaxation is found to be described by the von Schweidler form. Then it exhibits power-law behavior in the intermediate time scale and faster decay in the long-time limit, which together can be fitted to the Ogielski form; for longer waiting times, this crosses over to a stretched exponential form. We argue that the power-law behavior in the intermediate time scale may be understood as a consequence of the coarsening behavior, leading to the local vortex order corresponding to f=2/5 ground-state configurations. High mobility of the vortices in the domain boundaries, generating slow wandering motion of the domain walls, may provide mechanism of dynamic heterogeneity and account for the long-time stretched exponential relaxation behavior. It is expected that such meandering fluctuations of the low-temperature structure give rise to finite resistivity at those low temperatures; this appears consistent with the zero-temperature resistive transition in the limit of irrational frustration.

Nonequilibrium critical relaxations of the order parameter and energy in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Potts model

The static and dynamic critical properties of the ferromagnetic q-state Potts models on a square lattice with q = 2 and 3 are numerically studied via the nonequilibrium relaxation method. The relaxation behavior of both the order parameter and energy as well as that of the second moments are investigated, from which static and dynamic critical exponents can be obtained. We find that the static exponents thus obtained from the relaxation of the order parameter and energy together with the second moments of the order parameter exhibit a close agreement with the exact exponents, especially for the case of q = 2 (Ising) model, when care is taken in the choice of the initial states for the relaxation of the second moments. As for the case of q = 3, the estimates for the static exponents become less accurate but still exhibit reasonable agreement with the exactly known static exponents. The dynamic critical exponent for q = 2 (Ising) model is estimated from the relaxation of the second moments of the order parameter with mixed initial conditions to give z(q = 2) = 2.1668(19).

A FDR-preserving field theory for interacting Brownian particles: one-loop theory and MCT

We develop a field theoretical treatment of a model of interacting Brownian particles. We pay particular attention to the requirement of the time reversal invariance and the fluctuation-dissipation relationship (FDR). The method used is a modified version of the auxiliary field method due originally to Andreanov, Biroli and Lefevre [J. Stat. Mech. P07008 (2006)]. We recover the correct diffusion law when the interaction is dropped as well as the standard mode coupling equation in the one-loop order calculation for interacting Brownian particle systems.

Coarsening Dynamics in a Two-dimensional XY model with Hamiltonian Dynamics

We investigate the coarsening dynamics in the two-dimensional Hamiltonian XY model on a square lattice, beginning with a random state with a specified potential energy and zero kinetic energy. Coarsening of the system proceeds via an increase in the kinetic energy and a decrease in the potential energy, with the total energy being conserved. We find that the coarsening dynamics exhibits a consistently superdiffusive growth of a characteristic length scale with 1/z > 1/2 (ranging from 0.54 to 0.57). Also, the number of point defects (vortices and antivortices) decreases with exponents ranging between 1.0 and 1.1. On the other hand, the excess potential energy decays with a typical exponent of 0.88, which shows deviations from the energy-scaling relation. The spin autocorrelation function exhibits a peculiar time dependence with non-power law behavior that can be fitted well by an exponential of logarithmic power in time. We argue that the conservation of the total Josephson (angular) momentum plays a crucial role for these novel features of coarsening in the Hamiltonian XY model.

Dynamic Mean-Field Glass Model with Reversible Mode Coupling and Trivial Hamiltonian

Often the current mode coupling theory (MCT) of glass transitions is compared with mean field theories. We explore this possible correspondence. After showing a simple-minded derivation of MCT with some difficulties we give a concise account of our toy model developed to gain more insight into MCT. We then reduce this toy model by adiabatically eliminating rapidly varying velocity-like variables to obtain a Fokker-Planck equation for the slowly varying density-like variables where diffusion matrix can be singular. This gives a room for nonergodic stationary solutions of the above equation.

Kinetically driven glassy transition in an exactly solvable toy model with reversible mode coupling mechanism and trivial statics

We propose a toy model with reversible mode coupling mechanism and with trivial Hamiltonian (and hence trivial statics). The model can be analyzed exactly without relying upon uncontrolled approximation such as the factorization approximation employed in the current MCT. We show that the model exhibits a kinetically driven transition from an ergodic phase to nonergodic phase. The nonergodic state is the nonequilibrium stationary solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution function of the model

Patterns of Striped order in the Classical Lattice Coulomb Gas

We obtain via Monte Carlo simulations the low temperature charge configurations in the lattice Coulomb gas on square lattices for charge filling ratio $f$ in the range $1/3 < f < 1/2 $. We find a simple regularity in the low temperature charge configurations which consist of a suitable periodic combination of a few basic striped patterns characterized by the existence of partially filled diagonal channels. In general there exist two separate transitions where the lower temperature transition ($T_p$) corresponds to the freezing of charges within the partially filled channels. $T_p$ is found to be sensitively dependent on $f$ through the charge number density $ν= p_{1}/q_{1}$ within the channels.

Structural Relaxation, Self Diffusion and Kinetic Heterogeneity in the Two Dimensional Lattice Coulomb Gas

We present Monte Carlo simulation results on the equilibrium relaxation dynamics in the two dimensional lattice Coulomb gas, where finite fraction $f$ of the lattice sites are occupied by positive charges. In the case of high order rational values of $f$ close to the irrational number $1-g$ ($g\equiv(\sqrt{5} -1)/2$ is the golden mean), we find that the system exhibits, for wide range of temperatures above the first-order transition, a glassy behavior resembling the primary relaxation of supercooled liquids. Single particle diffusion and structural relaxation show that there exists a breakdown of proportionality between the time scale of diffusion and that of structural relaxation analogous to the violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation in supercooled liquids. Suitably defined dynamic cooperativity is calculated to exhibit the characteristic nature of dynamic heterogeneity present in the system.

An exactly solvable toy model that mimics the mode coupling theory of supercooled liquid and glass transition

A toy model is proposed which incorporates the reversible mode coupling mechanism responsible for ergodic-nonergodic transition with trivial Hamiltonian in the mode coupling theory (MCT) of structural glass transition. The model can be analyzed without relying on uncontrolled approximations inevitable in the current MCT. The strength of hopping processes can be easily tuned and the ideal glass transition is reproduced only in a certain range of the strength. On the basis of the analyses of our model we discuss about a sharp ergodic-nonergodic transition and its smearing out by "hopping".

Rotational relaxation in Brownian rotors with frustrated interactions on a square lattice

We present simulation results on the equilibrium relaxation of Brownian planar rotors based on a uniformly frustrated XY model on a square lattice. The rotational relaxation exhibits typical dynamic features of fragile supercooled liquids including the two-step relaxation. We observe a dynamic cross-over from high temperature regime with Arrhenius behavior to low temperaure regime with temperature-dependent activation energy. A consistent picture for the observed slow dynamics can be given in terms of caging effect and thermal activation across potential barriers in the energy landscapes.
