Polynomial Stability for Weakly Coupled System with Partial Controls

We study the stability of general weakly coupled systems subject to a reduced number of local or boundary controls. We show that, under Kalman's rank condition, the exponential stability of the underlying scalar equation implies polynomial stability of the full coupled system. Moreover, the decay rate remains unchanged regardless of the number of equations in the system. The proof relies on resolvent estimates and a clever exploitation of Kalman's rank condition to ensure effective transmission of damping across the coupled equations. The abstract result is applied to several concrete models, including systems of wave equations with local viscous, local viscoelastic, or boundary damping; systems of plate equations with internal damping; and thermoelastic systems of type III. Moreover, the optimality of the decay rate is established via spectral analysis.

Exact boundary controllability and exact boundary synchronization for a coupled system of wave equations with coupled Robin boundary controls

In this paper, we consider the exact boundary controllability and the exact boundary synchronization (by groups) for a coupled system of wave equations with coupled Robin boundary controls. Owing to the difficulty coming from the lack of regularity of the solution, we confront a bigger challenge than that in the case with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary controls. In order to overcome this difficulty, we use the regularity results of solutions to the mixed problem with Neumann boundary conditions by Lasiecka and Triggiani to get the regularity of solutions to the mixed problem with coupled Robin boundary conditions. Thus we show the exact boundary controllability of the system, and by a method of compact perturbation, we obtain the non-exact boundary controllability of the system with fewer boundary controls on some special domains. Based on this, we further study the exact boundary synchronization (by groups) for the same system, the determination of the exactly synchronizable state (by groups), as well as the necessity of the compatibility conditions of the coupling matrices.

Approximate boundary synchronization by groups for a coupled system of wave equations with coupled Robin boundary conditions

In this paper, we first give an algebraic characterization of uniqueness of continuation for a coupled system of wave equations with coupled Robin boundary conditions. Then, the approximate boundary controllability and the approximate boundary synchronization by groups for a coupled system of wave equations with coupled Robin boundary controls are developed around this fundamental characterization.

Uniform synchronization of an abstract linear second order evolution system

Although the mathematical study on the synchronization of wave equations at finite horizon has been well developed, there was few results on the synchronization of wave equations for long-time horizon. The aim of the paper is to investigate the uniform synchronization at the infinite horizon for one abstract linear second order evolution system in a Hilbert space. First, using the classical compact perturbation theory on the uniform stability of semigroups of contractions, we will establish a lower bound on the number of damping, necessary for the uniform synchronization of the considered system. Then, under the minimum number of damping, we clarify the algebraic structure of the system as well as the necessity of the conditions of compatibility on the coupling matrices. We then establish the uniform synchronization by the compact perturbation method and then give the dynamics of the asymptotic orbit. Various applications are given for the system of wave equations with boundary feedback or (and) locally distributed feedback, and for the system of Kirchhoff plate with distributed feedback. Some open questions are raised at the end of the paper for future development. The study is based on the synchronization theory and the compact perturbation of semigroups.

Exact boundary controllability and observability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kind of nonlocal boundary conditions

In this paper we establish the theory on semiglobal classical solution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kind of nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, the corresponding exact boundary controllability and observability are obtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearized Saint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, we show that the number of both boundary controls and boundary observations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude that the exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in a network with loop can not be realized generically.
