Proximate Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in a spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain compound

The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain is a prototypical many-body quantum model, exactly solvable via the integrable Bethe ansatz method, hosting a Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid. However, its clear experimental realizations remain absent. Here, we present a thorough investigation of the magnetism of the structurally disorder-free compound LuCu(OH)$_3$SO$_4$. By conducting magnetization and electron-spin-resonance measurements on the single-crystal sample, we establish that the title compound approximates the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain model with a nearest-neighbor exchange strength of $J_1$ $\sim$ 65 K and an easy-plane anisotropy of $\sim$ 0.994. The specific heat demonstrates a distinctive power-law behavior at low magnetic fields (with energy scales $\leq$ 0.02$J_1$) and low temperatures ($T$ $\leq$ 0.03$J_1$). This behavior is consistent with the expectations of the ideal spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain model, thereby supporting the formation of a gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid in LuCu(OH)$_3$SO$_4$.

The observation of quantum fluctuations in a kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

The search for the experimental evidence of quantum spin liquid (QSL) states is critical but extremely challenging, as the quenched interaction randomness introduced by structural imperfection is usually inevitable in real materials. YCu$_3$(OH)$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$ (YCOB) is a spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA) with strong coupling of $\langle J_1\rangle\sim$ 51 K but without conventional magnetic freezing down to 50 mK $\sim$ 0.001$\langle J_1\rangle$. Here, we report a Br nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the local spin susceptibility and dynamics on the single crystal of YCOB. The temperature dependence of NMR main-line shifts and broadening can be well understood within the frame of the KHA model with randomly distributed hexagons of alternate exchanges, compatible with the formation of a randomness-induced QSL state at low temperatures. The in-plane spin fluctuations as measured by the spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) exhibit a weak temperature dependence down to $T$ $\sim$ 0.03$\langle J_1\rangle$. Our results demonstrate that the majority of spins remain highly fluctuating at low temperatures despite the quenched disorder in YCOB.

Possible coexistence of short-range resonating-valence-bond and long-range stripe correlations in the spatially anisotropic triangular-lattice quantum magnet Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$

We show that short-range resonating-valence-bond correlations and long-range order can coexist in the ground state (GS) of a frustrated spin system. Our study comprises a comprehensive investigation of the quantum magnetism on the structurally disorder-free single crystal of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$, which realizes the $s$ = 1/2 Heisenberg model on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice. Competing exchange interactions determined by fitting the magnetization measured up to 55 T give rise to an exotic GS wavefunction with coexistence of the dominant short-range resonating-valence-bond correlations and weak long-range stripe order (ordered moment $M_0$ = $|\langle s_i^z\rangle|$ $\sim$ 0.02). At low temperatures, a first-order spin-flop transition is visible at $\sim$ 1-3 T. As the applied field further increases, another two magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transitions are observed at $\sim$ 14-19 and $\sim$ 46-52 T, respectively. Simulations of the Heisenberg exchange model show semi-quantitative agreement with the magnetic-field modulation of these unconventional phases, as well as the absence of visible magnetic reflections in neutron diffraction, thus supporting the GS of the spin system of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$ may be approximate to a quantum spin liquid. Our study establishes structurally disorder-free magnetic materials with spatially anisotropic exchange interactions as a possible arena for spin liquids.

Heat transport of the kagomé Heisenberg quantum spin liquid candidate YCu$_3$(OH)$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$: localized magnetic excitations and spin gap

The spin-1/2 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet is generally accepted as one of the most promising two-dimensional models to realize a quantum spin liquid state. Previous experimental efforts were almost exclusively on only one archetypal material, the herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, which unfortunately suffers from the notorious orphan spins problem caused by magnetic disorders. Here we turn to YCu$_3$(OH)$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$, recently recognized as another host of a globally undistorted kagomé Cu$^{2+}$ lattice free from the orphan spins, thus a more feasible system for studying the intrinsic kagomé quantum spin liquid physics. Our high-resolution low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements yield a vanishing small residual linear term of $κ/T$ ($T\rightarrow 0$), and thus clearly rule out itinerant gapless fermionic excitations. Unusual scattering of phonons grows exponentially with temperature, suggesting thermally activated phonon-spin scattering and hence a gapped magnetic excitation, consistent with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquid ground state. Additionally, the analysis of magnetic field impact on the thermal conductivity reveals a field closing of the spin gap, while the excitations remain localized.

Gapless Spin Liquid Behavior in A Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with Randomly Distributed Hexagons of Alternate Bonds

We demonstrate that the new single crystal of YCu$_3$[OH(D)]$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$ (YCOB) is a kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA) without evident orphan spins ($\ll$ 0.8\%). The site mixing between polar OH$^-$ and non-polar Br$^-$ causes local distortions of Cu-O-Cu exchange paths, and gives rise to 70(2)\% of randomly distributed hexagons of alternate bonds ($\sim$ $J_1-ΔJ$ and $J_1+ΔJ$) and the rest of almost uniform hexagons ($\sim$ $J_1$) on the kagome lattice. Simulations of the random exchange model with $ΔJ$/$J_1$ = 0.7(1) show good agreement with the experimental observations, including the weak upturn seen in susceptibility and the slight polarization in magnetization. Despite the average antiferromagnetic coupling of $J_1$ $\sim$ 60 K, no conventional freezing is observed down to $T$ $\sim$ 0.001$J_1$, and the raw specific heat exhibits a nearly quadratic temperature dependence below 1 K $\sim$ 0.02$J_1$, phenomenologically consistent with a gapless (spin gap $\leq$ 0.025$J_1$) Dirac quantum spin liquid (QSL). Our result sheds new light on the theoretical understanding of the randomness-relevant gapless QSL behavior in YCOB, as well as in other relevant materials.

Evidence for a gapless Dirac spin-liquid ground state in a spin-3/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

We report a comprehensive investigation of the magnetism of the $S$ = 3/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, $α$-CrOOH(D) (delafossites green-grey powder). The nearly Heisenberg antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian ($J_1$ $\sim$ 23.5 K) with a weak single-ion anisotropy of $|D|$/$J_1$ $\sim$ 4.6% is quantitatively determined by fitting to the electron spin resonance (ESR) linewidth and susceptibility measured at high temperatures. The weak single-ion anisotropy interactions, possibly along with other perturbations, e.g. next-nearest-neighbor interactions, suppress the long-range magnetic order and render the system disordered, as evidenced by both the absence of any clear magnetic reflections in neutron diffraction and the presence of the dominant paramagnetic ESR signal down to 2 K ($\sim$ 0.04$J_1$$S^2$), where the magnetic entropy is almost zero. The power-law behavior of specific heat ($C_m$ $\sim$ $T^{2.2}$) observed below the freezing temperature of $T_f$ = 25 K in $α$-CrOOH or below $T_f$ = 22 K in $α$-CrOOD is insensitive to the external magnetic field, and thus is consistent with the theoretical prediction of a gapless U(1) Dirac quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. At low temperatures, the spectral weight of the low-energy continuous spin excitations accumulates at the K points of the Brillouin zone, e.g. $|\mathbf{Q}|$ = 4$π$/(3$a$), and the putative Dirac cones are clearly visible. Our work is a first step towards the understanding of the possible Dirac QSL ground state in this triangular-lattice magnet with $S$ = 3/2.
