QDK/Chemistry: A Modular Toolkit for Quantum Chemistry Applications

We present QDK/Chemistry, a software toolkit for quantum chemistry workflows targeting quantum computers. The toolkit addresses a key challenge in the field: while quantum algorithms for chemistry have matured considerably, the infrastructure connecting classical electronic structure calculations to quantum circuit execution remains fragmented. QDK/Chemistry provides this infrastructure through a modular architecture that separates data representations from computational methods, enabling researchers to compose workflows from interchangeable components. In addition to providing native implementations of targeted algorithms in the quantum-classical pipeline, the toolkit builds upon and integrates with widely used open-source quantum chemistry packages and quantum computing frameworks through a plugin system, allowing users to combine methods from different sources without modifying workflow logic. This paper describes the design philosophy, current capabilities, and role of QDK/Chemistry as a foundation for reproducible quantum chemistry experiments.

Random Phase Approximation Correlation Energy using Real-Space Density Functional Perturbation Theory

We present a real-space method for computing the random phase approximation (RPA) correlation energy within Kohn-Sham density functional theory, leveraging the low-rank nature of the frequency-dependent density response operator. In particular, we employ a cubic scaling formalism based on density functional perturbation theory that circumvents the calculation of the response function matrix, instead relying on the ability to compute its product with a vector through the solution of the associated Sternheimer linear systems. We develop a large-scale parallel implementation of this formalism using the subspace iteration method in conjunction with the spectral quadrature method, while employing the Kronecker product-based method for the application of the Coulomb operator and the conjugate orthogonal conjugate gradient method for the solution of the linear systems. We demonstrate convergence with respect to key parameters and verify the method's accuracy by comparing with planewave results. We show that the framework achieves good strong scaling to many thousands of processors, reducing the time to solution for a lithium hydride system with 128 electrons to around 150 seconds on 4608 processors.

Version 2.0.0 -- SPARC: Simulation Package for Ab-initio Real-space Calculations

SPARC is an accurate, efficient, and scalable real-space electronic structure code for performing ab initio Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations. Version 2.0.0 of the software provides increased efficiency, and includes spin-orbit coupling, dispersion interactions, and advanced semilocal as well as hybrid exchange-correlation functionals, where it outperforms state-of-the-art planewave codes by an order of magnitude and more, with increasing advantages as the number of processors is increased. These new features further expand the range of physical applications amenable to first principles investigation.

Version 2.0.0 -- M-SPARC: Matlab-Simulation Package for Ab-initio Real-space Calculations

M-SPARC is a Matlab code for performing ab initio Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory simulations. Version 2.0.0 of the software further extends its capability to include relativistic effects, dispersion interactions, and advanced semilocal/nonlocal exchange-correlation functionals. These features significantly increase the fidelity of first principles calculations that can be performed using M-SPARC.

Real-space density kernel method for Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations at high temperature

Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations using conventional diagonalization based methods become increasingly expensive as temperature increases due to the need to compute increasing numbers of partially occupied states. We present a density matrix based method for Kohn-Sham calculations at high temperature that eliminates the need for diagonalization entirely, thus reducing the cost of such calculations significantly. Specifically, we develop real-space expressions for the electron density, electronic free energy, Hellmann-Feynman forces, and Hellmann-Feynman stress tensor in terms of an orthonormal auxiliary orbital basis and its density kernel transform, the density kernel being the matrix representation of the density operator in the auxiliary basis. Using Chebyshev filtering to generate the auxiliary basis, we next develop an approach akin to Clenshaw-Curtis spectral quadrature to calculate the individual columns of the density kernel based on the Fermi operator expansion in Chebyshev polynomials; and employ a similar approach to evaluate band structure and entropic energy components. We implement the proposed formulation in the SPARC electronic structure code, using which we show systematic convergence of the aforementioned quantities to exact diagonalization results, and obtain significant speedups relative to conventional diagonalization based methods. Finally, we employ the new method to compute the self-diffusion coefficient and viscosity of aluminum at 116,045 K from Kohn-Sham quantum molecular dynamics, where we find agreement with previous more approximate orbital-free density functional methods.
