Nonlinear spin dynamics of ferromagnetic ring in the vortex state and its application for spin-transfer nano-oscillator

We study a nonlinear spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic ring in a vortex state induced by the spin-polarized current. We also suggest to use the ferromagnetic ring as a free layer of a coreless vortex spin-transfer nano-oscillator. The calculated working frequency is about several GHz, that is much higher than the gyromode frequency of the disk-based vortex oscillator. The response of the vortex-state ring to the spin-polarized current has hysteretic behavior with the reasonable values of the thresholds current densities: ignition threshold is about $10^{8} \text{A}\text{cm}^{-2}$, and elimination current to maintain the oscillations has much lower values about $10^{6} \text{A} \text{cm}^{-2}$. The output signal can be extracted by the help of the inverse spin Hall effect or by the giant magnetoresistance. The output electromotive force averaged over all sample vanishes, and we suggest to use a ferromagnetic ring or disk in a vortex state as a GMR analyzer. For an inverse spin Hall analyser we advise to use two heavy metals with different signs of Spin-Hall angle. The ring-based STNO is supposed to increase the areas of practical application of the STNOs.

Antiferromagnetic droplet soliton driven by spin current

We demonstrate that a spin current flowing through a nano-contact into a uniaxial antiferromagnet with first- and second-order anisotropy can excite a self-localized dynamic magnetic soliton, known as a spin-wave droplet in ferromagnets. The droplet nucleates at a certain threshold current with the frequency of the Néel vector precession laying below the antiferromagnetic resonance. The frequency exhibits nonlinear behavior with the increasing of applied current. At the high value of applied torque, the soliton mode transforms, and the oscillator emits spin waves propagating in the antiferromagnetic layer.

Impulsive Fermi magnon-phonon resonance in antiferromagnetic $CoF_{2}$

Understanding spin-lattice interactions in antiferromagnets is one of the most fundamental issues at the core of the recently emerging and booming fields of antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics. Recently, coherent nonlinear spin-lattice coupling was discovered in an antiferromagnet which opened the possibility to control the nonlinear coupling strength and thus showing a novel pathway to coherently control magnon-phonon dynamics. Here, utilizing intense narrow band terahertz (THz) pulses and tunable magnetic fields up to 7 T, we experimentally realize the conditions of the Fermi magnon-phonon resonance in antiferromagnetic $CoF_{2}$. These conditions imply that both the spin and the lattice anharmonicities harvest energy transfer between the subsystems, if the magnon eigenfrequency $f_{m}$ is twice lower than the frequency of the phonon $2f_{m}=f_{ph}$. Performing THz pump-infrared probe spectroscopy in conjunction with simulations, we explore the coupled magnon-phonon dynamics in the vicinity of the Fermi-resonance and reveal the corresponding fingerprints of an impulsive THz-induced response. This study focuses on the role of nonlinearity in spin-lattice interactions, providing insights into the control of coherent magnon-phonon energy exchange.

Controlling magnetism with light in a zero orbital angular momentum antiferromagnet

Antiferromagnetic materials feature intrinsic ultrafast spin dynamics, making them ideal candidates for future magnonic devices operating at THz frequencies. A major focus of current research is the investigation of optical methods for the efficient generation of coherent magnons in antiferromagnetic insulators. In magnetic lattices endowed with orbital angular momentum, spin-orbit coupling enables spin dynamics through the resonant excitation of low-energy electric dipoles such as phonons and orbital resonances which interact with spins. However, in magnetic systems with zero orbital angular momentum, microscopic pathways for the resonant and low-energy optical excitation of coherent spin dynamics are lacking. Here, we consider experimentally the relative merits of electronic and vibrational excitations for the optical control of zero orbital angular momentum magnets, focusing on a limit case: the antiferromagnet manganese thiophoshate (MnPS3), constituted by orbital singlet Mn2+ ions. We study the correlation of spins with two types of excitations within its band gap: a bound electron orbital excitation from the singlet orbital ground state of Mn2+ into an orbital triplet state, which causes coherent spin precession, and a vibrational excitation of the crystal field that causes thermal spin disorder. Our findings cast orbital transitions as key targets for magnetic control in insulators constituted by magnetic centers of zero orbital angular momentum.

Spin-Hall nanooscillator based on an antiferromagnetic domain wall

We propose here a high-frequency spin-Hall nano-oscillator based on a simple magnetic texture, such as a domain wall, located in an antiferromagnet with easy-axis anisotropy type. We show that the spin current, polarized along the anisotropy axis, excites a conical precession of the Néel vector in such a domain wall, which allows obtaining a robust ac output signal, -- contrary to the planar precession in an uniform uniaxial antiferromagnet, where ac output is hard to achieve. The frequency of the auto-oscillations is easily tunable by the applied current up to the THz range, and the threshold current vanishes for pure uniaxial antiferromagnet. By micro-magnetic simulations, we demonstrate that the pinning of the domain wall is crucial for the oscillator design, which can be achieved in nano-constriction layout of the free layer.

Sub-terahertz ferrimagnetic spin-transfer torque oscillator

A theory of magnetization dynamics in ferrimagnetic materials with antiparallel aligned spin sub-lattices under action of spin-transfer torques (STT) is developed. We consider magnetization dynamics in GdFeCo layers in two cases of magnetic anisotropy: easy plane and easy axis. We demonstrate that, (i) for the easy plane anisotropy the precession of the Néel vector is conical and the cone angle depends on the STT strength and the value of spin non-compensation, while the frequency of precession can reach sub-THz frequencies; (ii) for the easy axis anisotropy two regimes are possible: deterministic switching of the net magnetization and a conical sub-THz precession depending on the STT strength.

Stabilization of magnetic skyrmions by RKKY interactions

We study the stabilization of an isolated magnetic skyrmion in a magnetic monolayer on a nonmagnetic conducting substrate via the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction. Two different types of the substrate are considered, usual normal metal and single-layer graphene. While the full stability analysis for skyrmions in the presence of the RKKY coupling requires a separate effort that is outside the scope of this work, we are able to study the radial stability (stability of a skyrmion against collapse) using variational energy estimates obtained within first-order perturbation theory, with the unperturbed Hamiltonian describing the isotropic Heisenberg magnet, and the two perturbations being the RKKY exchange and the easy-axis anisotropy. We show that a proper treatment of the long-range nature of the RKKY interaction leads to a qualitatively different stabilization scenario compared to previous studies, where solitons were stabilized by the frustrated exchange coupling (leading to terms with the fourth power of the magnetization gradients) or by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (described by terms linear in the magnetization gradients). In the case of a metallic substrate, the skyrmion stabilization is possible under restrictive conditions on the Fermi surface parameters, while in the case of a graphene substrate the stabilization is naturally achieved in several geometries with a lattice-matching of graphene and magnetic layer.

Antiferromagnetic THz-frequency Josephson-like Oscillator Driven by Spin Current

The development of compact and tunable room temperature sources of coherent THz-frequency signals would open a way for numerous new applications. The existing approaches to THz-frequency generation based on superconductor Josephson junctions (JJ), free electron lasers, and quantum cascades require cryogenic temperatures or/and complex setups, preventing the miniaturization and wide use of these devices. We demonstrate theoretically that a bi-layer of a heavy metal (Pt) and a bi-axial antiferromagnetic (AFM) dielectric (NiO) can be a source of a coherent THz signal. A spin-current flowing from a DC-current-driven Pt layer and polarized along the hard AFM anisotropy axis excites a non-uniform in time precession of magnetizations sublattices in the AFM, due to the presence of a weak easy-plane AFM anisotropy. The frequency of the AFM oscillations varies in the range of 0.1-2.0 THz with the driving current in the Pt layer from $10^8\text{A}/\text{cm}^2$ to $10^9\text{A}/\text{cm}^2$. The THz-frequency signal from the AFM with the amplitude exceeding 1 V/cm is picked up by the inverse spin-Hall effect in Pt. The operation of a room-temperature AFM THz-frequency oscillator is similar to that of a cryogenic JJ oscillator, with the energy of the easy-plane magnetic anisotropy playing the role of the Josephson energy.

Transformation of spin current by antiferromagnetic insulators

It is demonstrated theoretically that a thin layer of an anisotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator can effectively conduct spin current by excitation of a pair of evanescent AFM spin wave modes. The spin current flowing through the AFM is not conserved due to the interaction between the excited AFM modes and the AFM lattice, and, depending on the excitation conditions, can be either attenuated or enhanced. When the phase difference between the excited evanescent modes is close to $π/2$, there is an optimum AFM thickness for which the output spin current reaches a maximum, that can significantly exceed the magnitude of the input spin current. The spin current transfer through the AFM depends on the ambient temperature and increases substantially when temperature approaches the Neel temperature of the AFM layer.

Quantum effects for the 2D soliton in isotropic ferromagnets

We evaluate a zero-point quantum correction to a Belavin-Polyakov soliton in an isotropic 2D ferromagnet. By revising the scattering problem of quasi-particles by a soliton we show that it leads to the Aharonov-Bohm type of scattering, hence the scattering data can not be obtained by the Born approximation. We proof that the soliton energy with account of quantum corrections does not have a minimum as a function of its radius, which is usually interpreted as a soliton instability. On the other hand, we show that long lifetime solitons can exist in ferromagnets due to an additional integral of motion, which is absent for the sigma-model.

Dynamics of topological solitons in two-dimensional ferromagnets

Dynamical topological solitons are studied in classical two-dimensional Heisenberg easy-axis ferromagnets. The properties of such solitons are treated both analytically in the continuum limit and numerically by spin dynamics simulations of the discrete system. Excitation of internal mode causes orbital motion. This is confirmed by simulations.

Amplitudes for magnon scattering by vortices in two-dimensional weakly easy-plane ferromagnets

We study magnon modes in the presence of a vortex in a circular easy-plane ferromagnet. The problem of vortex-magnon scattering is investigated for partial modes with different values of the azimuthal quantum number m over a wide range of wave numbers. The analysis was done by combining analytical and numerical calculations in the continuum limit with numerical diagonalization of adequately large discrete systems. The general laws governing vortex-magnon interactions are established. We give simple physical explanations of the scattering results: the splitting of doublets for the modes with opposite signs of $m$, which takes place for the long wavelength limit, is an analogue of the Zeeman splitting in the effective magnetic field of the vortex. A singular behavior for the scattering amplitude, $σ_m\propto k$, takes place as $k$ diverges; it corresponds to the generalized Levinson theorem and can be explained by the singular behavior of the effective magnetic field at the origin.

Effective field theory for S=1 quantum nematic

For S=1 system with general isotropic nearest-neighbor exchange, we derive the low-energy description of the spin nematic phase in terms of the RP^{2} nonlinear sigma-model. In one dimension, quantum fluctuations destroy long-range nematic (quadrupolar) ordering, leading to the formation of a gapped spin liquid state being an analog of the Haldane phase for a spin nematic. Nematic analog of the Belavin-Polyakov instanton with π_{2} topological charge 1/2 is constructed. In two dimensions the long-range order is destroyed by thermal fluctuations and at finite temperature the system is in a renormalized classical regime. Behavior in external magnetic field is discussed.

Internal Modes and Magnon Scattering on Topological Solitons in 2d Easy-Axis Ferromagnets

We study the magnon modes in the presence of a topological soliton in a 2d Heisenberg easy-axis ferromagnet. The problem of magnon scattering on the soliton with arbitrary relation between the soliton radius R and the "magnetic length" Delta_0 is investigated for partial modes with different values of the azimuthal quantum numbers m. Truly local modes are shown to be present for all values of m, when the soliton radius is enough large. The eigenfrequencies of such internal modes are calculated analytically on limiting case of a large soliton radius and numerically for arbitrary soliton radius. It is demonstrated that the model of an isotropic magnet, which admits an exact analytical investigation, is not adequate even for the limit of small radius solitons, R<<Delta_0: there exists a local mode with nonzero frequency. We use the data about local modes to derive the effective equation of soliton motion; this equation has the usual Newtonian form in contrast to the case of the easy-plane ferromagnet. The effective mass of the soliton is found.

Soliton-Magnon Scattering in Two-Dimensional Isotropic Ferromagnets

It is studied the scattering of magnons by the 2d topological Belavin-Polyakov soliton in isotropic ferromagnet. Analytical solutions of the scattering problem are constructed: (i) exactly for any magnon wave vectors for the partial wave with the azimuthal number m=1 (translational mode), and (ii) in the long- and short-wave limits for the rest modes. The magnon mode frequencies are found for the finite size magnets. An effective equation of the soliton motion is constructed. The magnon density of states, connected with the soliton-magnon interaction, is found in a long-wave approximation.
