Vortex solitons in fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity

We address the existence and stability of vortex-soliton (VS) solutions of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with competing cubic-quintic nonlinearities and the Lévy index (fractionality) taking values 1 \leqα\leq2. Families of ring-shaped VSs with vorticities s = 1,2, and 3 are constructed in a numerical form. Unlike the usual two-dimensional NLSE (which corresponds to α = 2), in the fractional model VSs exist above a finite threshold value of the total power,P. Stability of the VS solutions is investigated for small perturbations governed by the linearized equation, and corroborated by direct simulations. Unstable VSs are broken up by azimuthal perturbations into several fragments, whose number is determined by the fastest growing eigenmode of small perturbations. The stability region, defined in terms of P, expands with the increase of α from 1 up to 2 for all s = 1, 2, and 3, except for steep shrinkage for s = 2 in the interval of 1\leqα\leq1.3.

Symmetry breaking of spatial Kerr solitons in fractional dimension

We study symmetry breaking of solitons in the framework of a nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation (NLFSE), characterized by its Lévy index, with cubic nonlinearity and a symmetric double-well potential. Asymmetric, symmetric, and antisymmetric soliton solutions are found, with stable asymmetric soliton solutions emerging from unstable symmetric and antisymmetric ones by way of symmetry-breaking bifurcations. Two different bifurcation scenarios are possible. First, symmetric soliton solutions undergo a symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the pitchfork type, which gives rise to a branch of asymmetric solitons, under the action of the self-focusing nonlinearity. Second, a family of asymmetric solutions branches off from antisymmetric states in the case of self-defocusing nonlinearity through a bifurcation of an inverted-pitchfork type. Systematic numerical analysis demonstrates that increase of the Lévy index leads to shrinkage or expansion of the symmetry-breaking region, depending on parameters of the double-well potential. Stability of the soliton solutions is explored following the variation of the Lévy index, and the results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations.

Nonlinearity and discreteness: Solitons in lattices

An overview is given of basic models combining discreteness in their linear parts (i.e. the models are built as dynamical lattices) and nonlinearity acting at sites of the lattices or between the sites. The considered systems include the Toda and Frenkel-Kontorova lattices (including their dissipative versions), as well as equations of the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) and Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) types, and DNLS-AL combination in the form of the Salerno model. The interplay of discreteness and nonlinearity gives rise to a variety of states, most important ones being self-trapped discrete solitons. Basic results for one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) discrete solitons are collected in the review, including 2D solitons with embedded vorticity, and some results concerning mobility of discrete solitons. Main experimental findings are overviewed too. Models of the semi-discrete type, and basic results for solitons supported by them, are also considered, in a brief form. Perspectives for the development of topics covered the review are discussed throughout the text.

Unstaggered-staggered solitons on one- and two-dimensional two-component discrete nonlinear Schrödinger lattices

We study coupled unstaggered-staggered soliton pairs emergent from a system of two coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations with the self-attractive on-site self-phase-modulation nonlinearity, coupled by the repulsive cross-phase-modulation interaction, on 1D and 2D lattice domains. These mixed modes are of a "symbiotic" type, as each component in isolation may only carry ordinary unstaggered solitons. While most work on DNLS systems addressed symmetric on-site-centered fundamental solitons, these models give rise to a variety of other excited states, which may also be stable. The simplest among them are antisymmetric states in the form of discrete twisted solitons, which have no counterparts in the continuum limit. In the extension to 2D lattice domains, a natural counterpart of the twisted states are vortical solitons. We first introduce a variational approximation (VA) for the solitons, and then correct it numerically to construct exact stationary solutions, which are then used as initial conditions for simulations to check if the stationary states persist under time evolution. Two-component solutions obtained include (i) 1D fundamental-twisted and twisted-twisted soliton pairs, (ii) 2D fundamental-fundamental soliton pairs, and (iii) 2D vortical-vortical soliton pairs. We also highlight a variety of other transient dynamical regimes, such as breathers and amplitude death. The findings apply to modeling binary Bose-Einstein condensates, loaded in a deep lattice potential, with identical or different atomic masses of the two components, and arrays of bimodal optical waveguides.

Tunable nonlinear spectra of anti-directional couplers

We produce transmission and reflection spectra of the anti-directional coupler (ADC) composed of linearly-coupled positive- and negative-refractive-index arms, with intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. Both reflection and transmission feature two highly amplified peaks at two distinct wavelengths in a certain range of values of the gain, making it possible to design a wavelength-selective mode-amplification system. We also predict that a blend of gain and loss in suitable proportions can robustly enhance reflection spectra which are detrimentally affected by the attenuation, in addition to causing red and blue shifts owing to the Kerr effect. In particular, ADC with equal gain and loss coefficients, is considered in necessary detail.

Modulational instability, inter-component asymmetry and formation of quantum droplets in one-dimensional binary Bose gases

Quantum droplets are ultradilute liquid states which emerge from the competitive interplay of two Hamiltonian terms, the mean-field energy and beyond-mean-field correction, in a weakly interacting binary Bose gas. We relate the formation of droplets in symmetric and asymmetric two-component one-dimensional boson systems to the modulational instability of a spatially uniform state driven by the beyond-mean-field term. Asymmetry between the components may be caused by their unequal populations or unequal intra-component interaction strengths. Stability of both symmetric and asymmetric droplets is investigated. Robustness of the symmetric solutions against symmetry-breaking perturbations is confirmed.

Singular solitons

We demonstrate that the commonly known concept, which treats solitons as nonsingular solutions produced by the interplay of nonlinear self-attraction and linear dispersion, may be extended to include modes with a relatively weak singularity at the central point, which keeps their integral norm convergent. Such states are generated by self-repulsion, which should be strong enough, namely, represented by septimal, quintic, and usual cubic terms in the framework of the one-, two-, and three-dimensional (1D, 2D, and 3D) nonlinear Schroedinger equations (NLSEs), respectively. Although such solutions seem counterintuitive, we demonstrate that they admit a straightforward interpretation as a result of screening of an additionally introduced attractive delta-functional potential by the defocusing nonlinearity. The strength ("bare charge") of the attractive potential is infinite in 1D, finite in 2D, and vanishingly small in 3D. Analytical asymptotics of the singular solitons at small and large distances are found, entire shapes of the solitons being produced in a numerical form. Complete stability of the singular modes is accurately predicted by the anti-Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion (under the assumption that it applies to the model), as verified by means of numerical methods. In 2D, the NLSE with a quintic self-focusing term admits singular soliton solutions with intrinsic vorticity too, but they are fully unstable. We also mention that dissipative singular solitons can be produced by the model with a complex coefficient in front of the nonlinear term.

Gap and embedded solitons in microwave-coupled binary condensates

It was recently found that, under the action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman splitting (ZS), binary BEC with intrinsic cubic nonlinearity supports families of gap solitons, provided that the kinetic energy is negligible in comparison with the SOC and ZS terms. We demonstrate that, also under the action of SOC and ZS, a similar setting may be introduced for BEC with two components representing different atomic states, resonantly coupled by microwave radiation, while the Poisson equation accounts for the feedback of the two-component atomic wave function onto the radiation. The microwave-mediated interaction induces an effective nonlinear trapping potential, which strongly affects the purport of the linear spectrum in this system. As a result, families of both gap and embedded solitons (those overlapping with the continuous spectrum) are found, being chiefly stable. The shape of the solitons features exact or broken skew symmetry. In addition to fundamental solitons (whose shape may or may not include a node), a family of dipole solitons is constructed too, which are even more stable than their fundamental counterparts. A nontrivial stability area is identified for moving solitons in the present system, which lacks Galilean invariance. Colliding solitons merge into a single one.

Self-interaction of ultrashort pulses in an epsilon-near-zero nonlinear material at the telecom wavelength

Dynamics of femtosecond pulses with the telecom carrier wavelength is investigated numerically in a subwavelength layer of an indium tin oxide (ITO) epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material with high dispersion and high nonlinearity. Due to the subwavelength thickness of the ITO ENZ material, and the fact that the pulse's propagation time is shorter than its temporal width, multiple reflections give rise to self-interaction in both spectral and temporal domains, especially at wavelengths longer than the ENZ point, at which the reflections are significantly stronger. A larger absolute value of the pulse's chirp strongly affects the self-interaction by redistributing energy between wavelengths, while the sign of the chirp affects the interaction in the temporal domain. It is also found that, when two identical pulses are launched simultaneously from both ends, a subwavelength counterpart of a standing-wave state can be established. It shows robust energy localization in the middle of the sample, in terms of both the spectral and temporal intensity distributions.

Spatiotemporal dissipative solitons and vortices in a multi-transverse-mode fiber laser

We introduce a model for spatiotemporal modelocking in multimode fiber lasers, which is based on the (3+1)-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (cGLE) with conservative and dissipative nonlinearities and a 2-dimensional transverse trapping potential. Systematic numerical analysis reveals a variety of stable nonlinear modes, including stable fundamental solitons and breathers, as well as solitary vortices with winding number $n=1$, while vortices with $n=2$ are unstable, splitting into persistently rotating bound states of two unitary vortices. A characteristic feature of the system is bistability between the fundamental and vortex spatiotemporal solitons.

Mechanisms of Spatiotemporal Mode-Locking

Mode-locking is a process in which different modes of an optical resonator establish, through nonlinear interactions, stable synchronization. This self-organization underlies light sources that enable many modern scientific applications, such as ultrafast and high-field optics and frequency combs. Despite this, mode-locking has almost exclusively referred to self-organization of light in a single dimension - time. Here we present a theoretical approach, attractor dissection, for understanding three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML). The key idea is to find, for each distinct type of 3D pulse, a specific, minimal reduced model, and thus to identify the important intracavity effects responsible for its formation and stability. An intuition for the results follows from the 'minimum loss principle,' the idea that a laser strives to find the configuration of intracavity light that minimizes loss (maximizes gain extraction). Through this approach, we identify and explain several distinct forms of STML. These novel phases of coherent laser light have no analogues in 1D and are supported by experimental measurements of the three-dimensional field, revealing STML states comprising more than $10^7$ cavity modes. Our results should facilitate the discovery and understanding of new higher-dimensional forms of coherent light which, in turn, may enable new applications.

Quasi-one-dimensional approximation for Bose-Einstein condensates transversely trapped by a funnel potential

Starting from the standard three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and using a variational approximation, we derive an effective one-dimensional nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (1D-NPSE) governing the axial dynamics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the action of a singular but physically relevant funnel-shaped transverse trap, i.e., an attractive 2D potential $\sim-1/r$ (where $r$ is the radial coordinate in the transverse plane), in combination with the repulsive self-interaction. Wave functions of the trapped BEC are regular, in spite of the potential's singularity. The model applies to a condensate of particles (small molecules) carrying a permanent electric dipole moment in the field of a uniformly charged axial thread, as well as to a quantum gas of magnetic atoms pulled by an axial electric current. By means of numerical simulations, we verify that the effective 1D-NPSE provides accurate static and dynamical results, in comparison to the full 3D GPE, for both repulsive and attractive signs of the intrinsic nonlinearity.

Coupled density-spin Bose-Einstein condensates dynamics and collapse in systems with quintic nonlinearity

We investigate the effects of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting on the coupled density-spin dynamics and collapse of the Bose-Einstein condensate driven by the quintic self-attraction in the same- and cross-spin channels. The characteristic feature of the collapse is the decrease in the width as given by the participation ratio of the density rather than by the expectation values of the coordinate. Qualitative arguments and numerical simulations reveal the existence of a critical spin-orbit coupling strength which either prohibits or leads to the collapse, and its dependence on other parameters, such as the condensates norm, spin-dependent nonlinear coupling, and the Zeeman splitting. The entire nonlinear dynamics critically depend on the initial spin sate.

Soliton dynamics in a fractional complex Ginzburg-Landau model

The general objective of the work is to study dynamics of dissipative solitons in the framework of a one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) of a fractional order. To estimate the shape of solitons in fractional models, we first develop the variational approximation for solitons of the fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE), and an analytical approximation for exponentially decaying tails of the solitons. Proceeding to numerical consideration of solitons in fractional CGLE, we study, in necessary detail, effects of the respective Levy index (LI) on the solitons' dynamics. In particular, dependence of stability domains in the model's parameter space on the LI is identified. Pairs of in-phase dissipative solitons merge into single pulses, with the respective merger distance also determined by LI.

Semidiscrete quantum droplets and vortices

We consider a binary bosonic condensate with weak mean-field (MF) residual repulsion, loaded in an array of nearly one-dimensional traps coupled by transverse hopping. With the MF force balanced by the effectively one-dimensional attraction, induced in each trap by the Lee-Hung-Yang correction (produced by quantum fluctuations around the MF state), stable onsite-centered and intersite-centered semi-discrete quantum droplets (QDs) emerge in the array, as fundamental ones and self-trapped vortices, with winding numbers, at least, up to 5, in both tightly-bound and quasi-continuum forms. The application of a relatively strong trapping potential leads to squeezing transitions, which increase the number of sites in fundamental QDs, and eventually replace vortex modes by fundamental or dipole ones. The results provide the first realization of stable semi-discrete vortex QDs, including ones with multiple vorticity.

Creating Oscillons and Oscillating Kinks in Two Scalar Field Theories

Oscillons are time-dependent, localized in space, extremely long-lived states in nonlinear scalar-field models, while kinks are topological solitons in one spatial dimension. In the present work, we show new classes of oscillons and oscillating kinks in a system of two nonlinearly coupled scalar fields in $1 + 1$ spatiotemporal dimensions. The solutions contain a control parameter, the variation of which produces oscillons and kinks with a flat-top shape. The model finds applications to condensed matter, cosmology, and high-energy physics.

Asymptotic dynamics of three-dimensional bipolar ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in an array of semiconductor carbon nanotubes

We study the propagation of three-dimensional bipolar ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in an array of semiconductor carbon nanotubes at times much longer than the pulse duration, yet still shorter than the relaxation time in the system. The interaction of the electromagnetic field with the electronic subsystem of the medium is described by means of Maxwell's equations, taking into account the field inhomogeneity along the nanotube axis beyond the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes and phases. A model is proposed for the analysis of the dynamics of an electromagnetic pulse in the form of an effective equation for the vector potential of the field. Our numerical analysis demonstrates the possibility of a satisfactory description of the evolution of the pulse field at large times by means of a three-dimensional generalization of the sine-Gordon and double sine-Gordon equations.

Nonlinear anti-directional couplers with gain and loss

Following the concept of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers, we propose a linearly coupled system of nonlinear waveguides, made of positive- and negative-index materials, which carry, respectively, gain and loss. We report novel bi- and multi-stability states pertaining to transmitted and reflective intensities, which are controlled by the ratio of the gain and loss coefficients, and phase mismatch between the waveguides. These states offer transmission regimes with extremely low threshold intensities for transitions between coexisting states, and very large amplification ratio between the input and output intensities leading to an efficient way of controlling light with light.
