On stability of one-dimensional Hughes' dynamics with affine costs

We investigate stability issues for the one-dimensional variant of the celebrated Hughes model for pedestrian evacuation. The cost function is assumed to be affine, which is a setting where existence of solutions with BV loc in space regularity, away from the so-called turning curve, was recently established. We provide a uniqueness result for solutions having the special property that agents never cross the turning curve (which implies that they are BV globally). In the same setting, continuous dependence of solutions on the cost parameter is highlighted. On the other hand, numerical simulations using the manyparticle approximation of the model, with more general initial conditions that allow the support of the solutions to intersect the turning curve, demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the evacuation time to the same cost parameter; this instability arises from interactions between agents and the turning curve.

The mathematical theory of Hughes' model: a survey of results

We provide an overview of the results on Hughes' model for pedestrian movements available in the literature. After the first successful approaches to solving a regularised version of the model, researchers focused on the structure of the Riemann problem, which led to local-in-time existence results for Riemann-type data and paved the way for a WFT (Wave-Front Tracking) approach to the solution semigroup. In parallel, a DPA (Deterministic Particles Approximation) approach was developed in the spirit of follow-the-leader approximation results for scalar conservation laws. Beyond having proved to be powerful analytical tools, the WFT and the DPA approaches also led to interesting numerical results. However, only existence theorems on very specific classes of initial data (essentially ruling out non-classical shocks) have been available until very recently. A proper existence result using a DPA approach was proven not long ago in the case of a linear coupling with the density in the eikonal equation. Shortly after, a similar result was proven via a fixed point approach. We provide a detailed statement of the aforementioned results and sketch the main proofs. We also provide a brief overview of results that are related to Hughes' model, such as the derivation of a dynamic version of the model via a mean-field game strategy, an alternative optimal control approach, and a localized version of the model. We also present the main numerical results within the WFT and DPA frameworks.

Existence of solutions to a class of one-dimensional models for pedestrian evacuations

In the framework inspired by R. L. Hughes model (Transp. Res. B, 2002) for pedestrian evacuation in a corridor, we establish existence of a solution by a topological fixed point argument. This argument applies to a class of models where the dynamics of the pedestrian density $ρ$ (governed by a discontinuous-flux Lighthill,Whitham and Richards model $ρ$t + (sign(x -- $ξ$(t))$ρ$v($ρ$)) x = 0) is coupled via an abstract operator to the computation of a Lipschitz continuous "turning curve" $ξ$. We illustrate this construction by several examples, including the standard Hughes' model with affine cost, and either with open-end conditions or with conditions corresponding to panic behaviour with capacity drop at exits. Other examples put forward versions of the Hughes model with inertial dynamics of the turning curve and general costs.

On existence, stability and many-particle approximation of solutions of 1D Hughes model with linear costs

This paper deals with the one-dimensional formulation of Hughes model for pedestrian flows in the setting of entropy solutions, which authorizes non-classical shocks at the location of the so-called turning curve. We consider linear cost functions, whose slopes $α$ 0 correspond to different crowd behaviours. We prove existence and partial well-posedness results in the framework of entropy solutions. The proofs of existence are based on a a sharply formulated many-particle approximation scheme with careful treatment of interactions of particles with the turning curve, and on local reductions to the well-known Lighthill-Whitham-Richards model. For the special case of BV-regular entropy solutions without non-classical shocks, locally Lipschitz continuous dependence of such solutions on the initial datum $ρ$ and on the cost parameter $α$ is proved. Differently from the stability argument and from existence results available in the literature, our existence result allows for the possible presence of non-classical shocks. First, we explore convergence of the many-particle approximations under the assumption of uniform space variation control. Next, by a local compactness argument that permits to circumvent the possible absence of global BV bounds, we obtain existence of solutions for general measurable data. Finally, we illustrate numerically that the model is able to reproduce typical behaviours in case of evacuation. Special attention is devoted to the impact of the parameter $α$ on the evacuation time.

Nonlocal Dissipation Measure and L 1 Kinetic Theory For Fractional Conservation Laws

We introduce a kinetic formulation for scalar conservation laws with nonlocal and nonlinear diffusion terms. We deal with merely L 1 initial data, general self-adjoint pure jump L{é}vy operators, and locally Lipschitz nonlinearities of porous medium kind possibly strongly degenerate. The cornerstone of the formulation and the uniqueness proof is an adequate explicit representation of the nonlocal dissipation measure. This approach is inspired from the second order theory unlike the cutting technique previously introduced for bounded entropy solutions. The latter technique no longer seems to fit our setting. This is moreover the first time that the more standard and sharper tools of the second order theory are faithfully adapted to fractional conservation laws.

A nonlinear time compactness result and applications to discretization of degenerate parabolic-elliptic PDEs

We propose a discrete functional analysis result suitable for proving compactness in the framework of fully discrete approximations of strongly degenerate parabolic problems. It is based on the original exploitation of a result related to compensated compactness rather than on a classical estimate on the space and time translates in the spirit of Simon (Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. 1987). Our approach allows to handle various numerical discretizations both in the space variables and in the time variable. In particular, we can cope quite easily with variable time steps and with multistep time differentiation methods like, e.g., the backward differentiation formula of order 2 (BDF2) scheme. We illustrate our approach by proving the convergence of a two-point flux Finite Volume in space and BDF2 in time approximation of the porous medium equation.

Qualitative behaviour and numerical approximation of solutions to conservation laws with non-local point constraints on the flux and modeling of crowd dynamics at the bottlenecks

In this paper we investigate numerically the model for pedestrian traffic proposed in [B.Andreianov, C.Donadello, M.D.Rosini, Crowd dynamics and conservation laws with nonlocal constraints and capacity drop, Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences 24 (13) (2014) 2685-2722]. We prove the convergence of a scheme based on a constraint finite volume method and validate it with an explicit solution obtained in the above reference. We then perform ad hoc simulations to qualitatively validate the model under consideration by proving its ability to reproduce typical phenomena at the bottlenecks, such as Faster Is Slower effect and the Braess' paradox.

Entropy conditions for scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux revisited

We propose new entropy admissibility conditions for multidimensional hyperbolic scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux which generalize one-dimensional Karlsen-Risebro-Towers entropy conditions. These new conditions are designed, in particular, in order to characterize the limit of vanishing viscosity approximations. On the one hand, they comply quite naturally with a certain class of physical and numerical modeling assumptions; on the other hand, their mathematical assessment turns out to be intricate. \smallskip The generalization we propose is not only with respect to the space dimension, but mainly in the sense that the "crossing condition" of [K.H. Karlsen, N.H. Risebro, J. Towers, Skr.\,K.\,Nor.\,Vid.\,Selsk. (2003)] is not mandatory for proving uniqueness with the new definition. We prove uniqueness of solutions and give tools to justify their existence via the vanishing viscosity method, for the multi-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous case with a finite number of Lipschitz regular hypersurfaces of discontinuity for the flux function.

Riemann problems with non--local point constraints and capacity drop

In the present note we discuss in details the Riemann problem for a one--dimensional hyperbolic conservation law subject to a point constraint. We investigate how the regularity of the constraint operator impacts the well--posedness of the problem, namely in the case, relevant for numerical applications, of a discretized exit capacity. We devote particular attention to the case in which the constraint is given by a non--local operator depending on the solution itself. We provide several explicit examples. We also give the detailed proof of some results announced in the paper [Andreainov, Donadello, Rosini, "Crowd dynamics and conservation laws with non--local point constraints and capacity drop", which is devoted to existence and stability for a more general class of Cauchy problems subject to Lipschitz continuous non--local point constraints.

Crowd dynamics and conservation laws with non-local constraints

In this paper we model pedestrian flows evacuating a narrow corridor through an exit by a one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation law with a non-local constraint. Existence and stability results for the Cauchy problem with Lipschitz constraint are achieved by a procedure that combines the wave-front tracking algorithm with the operator splitting method. The Riemann problem with piecewise constant constraint is discussed in details, stressing the possible lack of uniqueness, self-similarity and $\Lloc1$-continuity. One explicit example of application is provided.

Convergence of discrete duality finite volume schemes for the cardiac bidomain model

We prove convergence of discrete duality finite volume (DDFV) schemes on distorted meshes for a class of simplified macroscopic bidomain models of the electrical activity in the heart. Both time-implicit and linearised time-implicit schemes are treated. A short description is given of the 3D DDFV meshes and of some of the associated discrete calculus tools. Several numerical tests are presented.

A theory of $L^1$-dissipative solvers for scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux

We propose a general framework for the study of $L^1$ contractive semigroups of solutions to conservation laws with discontinuous flux. Developing the ideas of a number of preceding works we claim that the whole admissibility issue is reduced to the selection of a family of "elementary solutions", which are certain piecewise constant stationary weak solutions. We refer to such a family as a "germ". It is well known that (CL) admits many different $L^1$ contractive semigroups, some of which reflects different physical applications. We revisit a number of the existing admissibility (or entropy) conditions and identify the germs that underly these conditions. We devote specific attention to the anishing viscosity" germ, which is a way to express the "$\Gamma$-condition" of Diehl. For any given germ, we formulate "germ-based" admissibility conditions in the form of a trace condition on the flux discontinuity line $x=0$ (in the spirit of Vol'pert) and in the form of a family of global entropy inequalities (following Kruzhkov and Carrillo). We characterize those germs that lead to the $L^1$-contraction property for the associated admissible solutions. Our approach offers a streamlined and unifying perspective on many of the known entropy conditions, making it possible to recover earlier uniqueness results under weaker conditions than before, and to provide new results for other less studied problems. Several strategies for proving the existence of admissible solutions are discussed, and existence results are given for fluxes satisfying some additional conditions. These are based on convergence results either for the vanishing viscosity method (with standard viscosity or with specific viscosities "adapted" to the choice of a germ), or for specific germ-adapted finite volume schemes.

Discrete duality finite volume schemes for doubly nonlinear degenerate hyperbolic-parabolic equations

We consider a class of doubly nonlinear degenerate hyperbolic-parabolic equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, for which we first establish the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions. We then turn to the construction and analysis of discrete duality finite volume schemes (in the spirit of Domelevo and Omn\`es \cite{DomOmnes}) for these problems in two and three spatial dimensions. We derive a series of discrete duality formulas and entropy dissipation inequalities for the schemes. We establish the existence of solutions to the discrete problems, and prove that sequences of approximate solutions generated by the discrete duality finite volume schemes converge strongly to the entropy solution of the continuous problem. The proof revolves around some basic a priori estimates, the discrete duality features, Minty-Browder type arguments, and "hyperbolic" $L^\infty$ weak-$\star$ compactness arguments (i.e., propagation of compactness along the lines of Tartar, DiPerna, ...). Our results cover the case of non-Lipschitz nonlinearities.

Well-posedness results for triply nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations

We study the well-posedness of triply nonlinear degenerate elliptic-parabolic-hyperbolic problem $$ b(u)_t - {\rm div} \tilde{\mathfrak a}(u,\nablaϕ(u))+ψ(u)=f, \quad u|_{t=0}=u_0 $$ in a bounded domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The nonlinearities $b,ϕ$ and $ψ$ are supposed to be continuous non-decreasing, and the nonlinearity $\tilde{\mathfrak a}$ falls within the Leray-Lions framework. Some restrictions are imposed on the dependence of $\tilde{\mathfrak a}(u,\nablaϕ(u))$ on $u$ and also on the set where $ϕ$ degenerates. A model case is $\tilde{\mathfrak a}(u,\nablaϕ(u)) =\tilde{\mathfrak{f}}(b(u),ψ(u),ϕ(u))+k(u)\mathfrak{a}_0(\nablaϕ(u)),$ with $ϕ$ which is strictly increasing except on a locally finite number of segments, and $\mathfrak{a}_0$ which is of the Leray-Lions kind. We are interested in existence, uniqueness and stability of entropy solutions. If $b=\mathrm{Id}$, we obtain a general continuous dependence result on data $u_0,f$ and nonlinearities $b,ψ,ϕ,\tilde{\mathfrak{a}}$. Similar result is shown for the degenerate elliptic problem which corresponds to the case of $b\equiv 0$ and general non-decreasing surjective $ψ$. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on data $u_0,f$ are shown when $[b+ψ](\R)=\R$ and $ϕ\circ [b+ψ]^{-1}$ is continuous.
