Dark Energy from the Thermal Sunyaev Zeldovich Power Spectrum

We constrain the dark energy equation of state parameter, $w$, using the power spectrum of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect. We improve upon previous analyses by taking into account the trispectrum in the covariance matrix and marginalising over the foreground parameters, the correlated noise, the mass bias $B$ in the Planck universal pressure profile, and all the relevant cosmological parameters (i.e., not just $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$ and $σ_8$). We find that the amplitude of the tSZ power spectrum at $\ell\lesssim 10^3$ depends primarily on $F\equiv σ_{8}(Ω_{\mathrm{m}}/B)^{0.40}h^{-0.21}$, where $B$ is related to more commonly used variable $b$ by $B=(1-b)^{-1}$. We measure this parameter with 2.6\% precision, $F=0.460\pm 0.012$ (68% CL). By fixing the bias to $B=1.25$ and adding the local determination of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum constrained by the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data, we find $w=-1.10\pm0.12$, $σ_{\mathrm{8}}=0.802\pm0.037$, and $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}=0.265\pm0.022$ (68% CL). Our limit on $w$ is consistent with and is as tight as that from the distance-alone constraint from the CMB and $H_0$. Finally, by combining the tSZ power spectrum and the CMB data we find, in the $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model, the mass bias of $B=1.71\pm 0.17$, i.e., $1-b=0.58\pm 0.06$ (68% CL).

Non-Gaussianity in Loop Quantum Cosmology

We extend the phenomenology of loop quantum cosmology (LQC) to second order in perturbations. Our motivation is twofold. On the one hand, since LQC predicts a cosmic bounce that takes place at the Planck scale, the second order contributions could be large enough to jeopardize the validity of the perturbative expansion on which previous results rest. On the other hand, the upper bounds on primordial non-Gaussianity obtained by the Planck Collaboration are expected to play a significant role on explorations of the LQC phenomenology. We find that the bounce in LQC produces an enhancement of non-Gaussianity of several orders of magnitude, on length scales that were larger than the curvature radius at the bounce. Nonetheless, we find that one can still rely on the perturbative expansion to make predictions about primordial perturbations. We discuss the consequences of our results for LQC and its predictions for the cosmic microwave background.

Quantum-gravity phenomenology with primordial black holes

Quantum gravity may allow black holes to tunnel into white holes. If so, the lifetime of a black hole could be shorter than the one given by Hawking evaporation, solving the information paradox. More interestingly, this could open to a new window for quantum-gravity phenomenology, in connection with the existence of primordial black holes. We discuss in particular the power of the associated explosion and the possibility to observe an astrophysical signal in the radio and in the gamma wavelengths.

Bouncing black holes in quantum gravity and the Fermi gamma-ray excess

Non-perturbative quantum-gravity effects can change the fate of black holes and make them bounce in a time scale shorter than the Hawking evaporation time. In this article, we show that this hypothesis can account for the GeV excess observed from the galactic center by the Fermi satellite. By carefully taking into account the secondary component due to the decay of unstable hadrons, we show that the model is fully self-consistent. This phenomenon presents a specific redshift-dependance that could allow to distinguish it from other astrophysical phenomena possibly contributing to the GeV excess.

Some Clarifications on the Duration of Inflation in Loop Quantum Cosmology

The prediction of a phase of inflation whose number of e-folds is constrained is an important feature of loop quantum cosmology. This work aims at giving some elementary clarifications on the role of the different hypotheses leading to this conclusion. We show that the duration of inflation does not depend significantly on the modified background dynamics in the quantum regime.

Some conceptual issues in loop quantum cosmology

Loop quantum gravity is a mature theory. To proceed to explicit calculations in cosmology, it is necessary to make assumptions and simplifications based on the symmetries of the cosmological setting. Symmetry reduction is especially critical when dealing with cosmological perturbations. The present article reviews several approaches to the problem of building a consistent formalism that describes the dynamics of perturbations on a quantum spacetime and tries to address their respective strengths and weaknesses. We also review the main open issues in loop quantum cosmology.

Phenomenology of bouncing black holes in quantum gravity: a closer look

It was recently shown that black holes could be bouncing stars as a consequence of quantum gravity. We investigate the astrophysical signals implied by this hypothesis, focusing on primordial black holes. We consider different possible bounce times and study the integrated diffuse emission.

The Equation of State Approach to Cosmological Perturbations in f(R) Gravity

The discovery of apparent cosmological acceleration has spawned a huge number of dark energy and modified gravity theories. The f(R) models of gravity are obtained when one replaces the Ricci scalar in the Einstein-Hilbert action by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar. In this work we provide expressions for the equations of state (EoS) for perturbations which completely characterize the linearized perturbations in f(R) gravity, including the scalar, vector, and tensor modes. The EoS formalism is a powerful and elegant parametrization where the modification to General Relativity are treated as a dark-energy-fluid. The perturbed dark-energy-fluid variables such as the anisotropic stress or the entropy perturbation are explicitly given in terms of parameters of the model of interest.

Primordial scalar power spectrum from the Euclidean Big Bounce

In effective models of loop quantum cosmology, the holonomy corrections are associated with deformations of space-time symmetries. The most evident manifestation of the deformations is the emergence of an Euclidean phase accompanying the non-singular bouncing dynamics of the scale factor. In this article, we compute the power spectrum of scalar perturbations generated in this model, with a massive scalar field as the matter content. Instantaneous and adiabatic vacuum-type initial conditions for scalar perturbations are imposed in the contracting phase. The evolution through the Euclidean region is calculated based on the extrapolation of the time direction pointed by the vectors normal to the Cauchy hypersurface in the Lorentzian domains. The obtained power spectrum is characterized by a suppression in the IR regime and oscillations in the intermediate energy range. Furthermore, the speculative extension of the analysis in the UV reveals a specific rise of the power.

Observational Exclusion of a Consistent Quantum Cosmology Scenario

It is often argued that inflation erases all the information about what took place before it started. Quantum gravity, relevant in the Planck era, seems therefore mostly impossible to probe with cosmological observations. In general, only very ad hoc scenarios or hyper fine-tuned initial conditions can lead to observationally testable theories. Here we consider a well-defined and well motivated candidate quantum cosmology model that predicts inflation. Using the most recent observational constraints on the cosmic microwave background B modes, we show that the model is excluded for all its parameter space, without any tuning. Some important consequences are drawn for the deformed algebra approach to loop quantum cosmology. We emphasize that neither loop quantum cosmology in general nor loop quantum gravity are disfavored by this study but their falsifiability is established.

The Rise and Fall of the Ridge in Heavy Ion Collisions

Recent data from heavy ion collisions at RHIC show unexpectedly large near-angle correlations that broaden longitudinally with increasing centrality. The amplitude of this ridge-like correlation rises rapidly, reaches a maximum, and then falls in the most central collisions. In this letter we explain how this behavior can be explained as initial-state coordinate-space anisotropies converted into final-state momentum-space correlations. We propose $v_n^2/ε_{n,\mathrm{part}}^{2}$ as a useful way to study length scales and provide a prediction for the ridge in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=$ 2.76 TeV.
