On Exotic Materials in 3D Linear Elasticity with High Symmetry Classes

An anisotropic elastic material is referred to as exotic when, under specific loadings, its mechanical response exhibits a higher degree of symmetry than that prescribed by its intrinsic material symmetry. Such materials, which may be regarded as lying, conceptually and functionally, between two distinct symmetry classes, are of significant practical relevance. They enable the tailored design of metamaterials capable of reconciling otherwise incompatible mechanical requirements; for example, achieving directional isotropy of the Young's modulus in an intrinsically anisotropic medium. This work focuses on the systematic classification of exotic structures within the framework of three-dimensional linear elasticity. An exhaustive classification is carried out, leading to the enumeration of 18 exotic structures corresponding to symmetry classes higher than orthotropy. Representative examples of exotic elastic behaviours are analysed in detail.

Distance to plane elasticity orthotropy by Euler-Lagrange method

Constitutive tensors are of common use in mechanics of materials. To determine the relevant symmetry class of an experimental tensor is still a tedious problem. For instance, it requires numerical methods in three-dimensional elasticity. We address here the more affordable case of plane (bi-dimensional) elasticity, which has not been fully solved yet. We recall first Vianello's orthogonal projection method, valid for both the isotropic and the square symmetric (tetragonal) symmetry classes. We then solve in a closed-form the problem of the distance to plane elasticity orthotropy, thanks to the Euler-Lagrange method.

Characterization of the symmetry class of an Elasticity tensor using polynomial covariants

We formulate effective necessary and sufficient conditions to identify the symmetry class of an elasticity tensor, a fourth-order tensor which is the cornerstone of the theory of elasticity and a toy model for linear constitutive laws in physics. The novelty is that these conditions are written using polynomial covariants. As a corollary, we deduce that the symmetry classes are affine algebraic sets, a result which seems to be new. Meanwhile, we have been lead to produce a minimal set of 70 generators for the covariant algebra of a fourth-order harmonic tensor and introduce an original generalized cross product on totally symmetric tensors. Finally, using these tensorial covariants, we produce a new minimal set of 294 generators for the invariant algebra of the elasticity tensor.

Explicit Harmonic Structure Of Bidimensional Linear Strain-Gradient Elasticity

In the perspective of homogenization theory, strain-gradient elasticity is a strategy to describe the overall behaviour of materials with coarse mesostructure. In this approach, the effect of the mesostructure is described by the use of three elasticity tensors whose orders vary from 4 to 6. Higher-order constitutive tensors make it possible to describe rich physical phenomena. However, these objects have intricate algebraic structures that prevent us from having a clear picture of their modeling capabilities. The harmonic decomposition is a fundamental tool to investigate the anisotropic properties of constitutive tensor spaces. For higher-order tensors (i.e. tensors of order $n\geq$3), its establishment is generally a difficult task. In this paper a novel procedure to obtain this decomposition is introduced. This method, that we have called the \textit{Clebsch-Gordan Harmonic Algorithm}, allows to obtain \emph{explicit} harmonic decompositions satisfying good properties such as orthogonality and unicity. The elements of the decomposition also have a precise geometrical meaning simplifying their physical interpretation. This new algorithm is here developed in the specific case of 2D space and applied to Mindlin's Strain-Gradient Elasticity. We provide, for the first time, the harmonic decompositions of the fifth- and sixth-order elasticity tensors involved in this constitutive law.

Computation of minimal covariants bases for 2D coupled constitutive laws

We produce minimal integrity bases for both isotropic and hemitropic invariant algebras (and more generally covariant algebras) of most common bidimensional constitutive tensors and -- possibly coupled -- laws, including piezoelectricity law, photoelasticity, Eshelby and elasticity tensors, complex viscoelasticity tensor, Hill elasto-plasticity, and (totally symmetric) fabric tensors up to twelfth-order. The concept of covariant, which extends that of invariant is explained and motivated. It appears to be much more useful for applications. All the tools required to obtain these results are explained in detail and a cleaning algorithm is formulated to achieve minimality in the isotropic case. The invariants and covariants are first expressed in complex forms and then in tensorial forms, thanks to explicit translation formulas which are provided. The proposed approach also applies to any $n$-uplet of bidimensional constitutive tensors.

Recovering the normal form of an elasticity tensor

We propose an effective geometrical approach to recover the normal form of a given Elasticity tensor, once we know its symmetry class. In other words, we produce a rotation which brings an Elasticity tensor onto its normal form, given its components in any orthonormal frame, and this for any tensor of any symmetry class. Our methodology relies on the use of specific covariants and on the geometric characterization of each symmetry class using these covariants. An algorithm to detect the symmetry class of an Elasticity tensor is finally formulated.

On the determination of plane and axial symmetries in linear Elasticity and Piezo-electricity

We formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for a unit vector n to generate a plane or axial symmetry of a constitutive tensor. For the elasticity tensor, these conditions consist of two polynomial equations of degree lower than four in the components of n. Compared to Cowin-Mehrabadi conditions, this is an improvement, since these equations involve only the normal vector n to the plane symmetry (and no vector perpendicular to n). Similar reduced algebraic conditions are obtained for linear piezo-electricity and for totally symmetric tensors up to order 6.

Reduced algebraic conditions for plane/axial tensorial symmetries

In this article, we formulate necessary and sufficient polynomial equations for the existence of a symmetry plane or an order-two axial symmetry for a totally symmetric tensor of order n $\ge$ 1. These conditions are effective and of degree n (the tensor's order) in the components of the normal to the plane (or the direction of the axial symmetry). These results are then extended to obtain necessary and sufficient polynomial conditions for the existence of such symmetries for an Elasticity tensor, a Piezo-electricity tensor or a Piezo-magnetism pseudo-tensor.

Generic separating sets for 3D elasticity tensors

We define what is a generic separating set of invariant functions (a.k.a. a weak functional basis) for tensors. We produce then two generic separating sets of polynomial invariants for 3D elasticity tensors, one made of 19 polynomials and one made of 21 polynomials (but easier to compute) and a generic separating set of 18 rational invariants. As a byproduct, a new integrity basis for the fourth-order harmonic tensor is provided.

Micromechanics based framework with second-order damage tensors

The harmonic product of tensors---leading to the concept of harmonic factorization---has been defined in a previous work (Olive et al, 2017). In the practical case of 3D crack density measurements on thin or thick walled structures, this mathematical tool allows us to factorize the harmonic (irreducible) part of the fourth-order damage tensor as an harmonic square: an exact harmonic square in 2D, an harmonic square over the set of so-called mechanically accessible directions for measurements in the 3D case. The corresponding micro-mechanics framework based on second---instead of fourth---order damage tensors is derived. An illustrating example is provided showing how the proposed framework allows for the modeling of the so-called hydrostatic sensitivity up to high damage levels.

Harmonic factorization and reconstruction of the elasticity tensor

In this paper, we propose a factorization of a fourth-order harmonic tensor into second-order tensors. We obtain moreover explicit equivariant reconstruction formulas, using second-order covariants, for transverse isotropic and orthotropic harmonic fourth-order tensors, and for trigonal and tetragonal harmonic fourth-order tensors up to a cubic fourth order covariant remainder.
