Projective Hilbert space structures at exceptional points

A non-Hermitian complex symmetric 2x2 matrix toy model is used to study projective Hilbert space structures in the vicinity of exceptional points (EPs). The bi-orthogonal eigenvectors of a diagonalizable matrix are Puiseux-expanded in terms of the root vectors at the EP. It is shown that the apparent contradiction between the two incompatible normalization conditions with finite and singular behavior in the EP-limit can be resolved by projectively extending the original Hilbert space. The complementary normalization conditions correspond then to two different affine charts of this enlarged projective Hilbert space. Geometric phase and phase jump behavior are analyzed and the usefulness of the phase rigidity as measure for the distance to EP configurations is demonstrated. Finally, EP-related aspects of PT-symmetrically extended Quantum Mechanics are discussed and a conjecture concerning the quantum brachistochrone problem is formulated.

Supersymmetric $η$ operators

Being chosen as a differential operator of a special form, metric $η$ operator becomes unitary equivalent to a one-dimensional Hermitian Hamiltonian with a natural supersymmetric structure. We show that fixing the superpartner of this Hamiltonian permits to determine both the metric operator and corresponding non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Moreover, under an additional restriction on the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, it becomes a superpartner of another Hermitian Hamiltonian.

Hermitian Hamiltonian equivalent to a given non-Hermitian one. Manifestation of spectral singularity

One of the simplest non-Hermitian Hamiltonians first proposed by Schwartz (1960 {\it Commun. Pure Appl. Math.} \tb{13} 609) which may possess a spectral singularity is analyzed from the point of view of non-Hermitian generalization of quantum mechanics. It is shown that $η$ operator, being a second order differential operator, has supersymmetric structure. Asymptotic behavior of eigenfunctions of a Hermitian Hamiltonian equivalent to the given non-Hermitian one is found. As a result the corresponding scattering matrix and cross section are given explicitly. It is demonstrated that the possible presence of the spectral singularity in the spectrum of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian may be detected as a resonance in the scattering cross section of its Hermitian counterpart. Nevertheless, just at the singular point the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian becomes undetermined.

Scattering cross section resonance originating from a spectral singularity

Using techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, scattering properties of Hermitian Hamiltonians, which are related to non-Hermitian ones by similarity transformations, are studied. We have found that the scattering matrix of the Hermitian Hamiltonian coincides with the phase factor of the non-unitary scattering matrix of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The possible presence of a spectral singularity in a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian translates into a pronounced resonance in the scattering cross section of its Hermitian counterpart. This opens a way for detecting spectral singularities in scattering experiments; although a singular point is inaccessible for the Hermitian Hamiltonian, the Hamiltonian "feels" the presence of the singularity if it is "close enough". We also show that cross sections of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian do not exhibit any resonance behavior and explain the resonance behavior of the Hermitian Hamiltonian cross section by the fact that corresponding scattering matrix, up to a background scattering matrix, is a square root of the Breit-Wigner scattering matrix.

Singular matrix Darboux transformations in the inverse scattering method

Singular Darboux transformations, in contrast to the conventional ones, have a singular matrix as a coefficient before the derivative. We incorporated such transformations into a chain of conventional transformations and presented determinant formulas for the resulting action of the chain. A determinant representation of the Kohlhoff-von Geramb solution to the Marchenko equation is given.

Reconstructing the nucleon-nucleon potential by a new coupled-channel inversion method

A second-order supersymmetric transformation is presented, for the two-channel Schrödinger equation with equal thresholds. It adds a Breit-Wigner term to the mixing parameter, without modifying the eigenphase shifts, and modifies the potential matrix analytically. The iteration of a few such transformations allows a precise fit of realistic mixing parameters in terms of a Pade expansion of both the scattering matrix and the effective-range function. The method is applied to build an exactly-solvable potential for the neutron-proton $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ case.

SUSY transformations with complex factorization constants. Application to spectral singularities

Supersymmetric (SUSY) transformation operators corresponding to complex factorization constants are analyzed as operators acting in the Hilbert space of functions square integrable on the positive semiaxis. Obtained results are applied to Hamiltonians possessing spectral singularities which are non-Hermitian SUSY partners of selfadjoint operators. A new regularization procedure for the resolution of the identity operator in terms of continuous biorthonormal set of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian eigenfunctions is proposed. It is also shown that the continuous spectrum eigenfunction has zero binorm (in the sense of distributions) at the singular point.

Equivalent Hermitian operator from supersymmetric quantum mechanics

Diagonalizable pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real and discrete spectra, which are superpartners of Hermitian Hamiltonians, must be $η$-pseudo-Hermitian with Hermitian, positive-definite and non-singular $η$ operators. We show that despite the fact that an $η$ operator produced by a supersymmetric transformation, corresponding to the exact supersymmetry, is singular, it can be used to find the eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator equivalent to the given pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Once the eigenfunctions of the Hermitian operator are found the operator may be reconstructed with the help of the spectral decomposition.

Optimal positive-operator-valued measures for unambiguous state discrimination

Optimization of the mean efficiency for unambiguous (or error free)discrimination among $N$ given linearly independent nonorthogonal states should be realized in a way to keep the probabilistic quantum mechanical interpretation. This imposes a condition on a certain matrix to be positive semidefinite. We reformulated this condition in such a way that the conditioned optimization problem for the mean efficiency was reduced to finding an unconditioned maximum of a function defined on a unit $N$-sphere for equiprobable states and on an $N$-ellipsoid if the states are given with different probabilities. We established that for equiprobable states a point on the sphere with equal values of Cartesian coordinates, which we call symmetric point, plays a special role. Sufficient conditions for a vector set are formulated for which the mean efficiency for equiprobable states takes its maximal value at the symmetric point. This set, in particular, includes previously studied symmetric states. A subset of symmetric states, for which the optimal measurement corresponds to a POVM requiring a one-dimensional ancilla space is constructed. We presented our constructions of a POVM suitable for the ancilla space dimension varying from 1 till $N$ and the Neumark's extension differing from the existing schemes by the property that it is straightforwardly applicable to the case when it is desirable to present the whole space system + ancilla as the tensor product of a two-dimensional ancilla space and the $N$-dimensional system space.

Towards Dynamical Qubit Controlling with Time-Dependent External Fields

For a flux qubit described by a two-level system of equations we propose a special time dependent external control field. We show that for a qubit placed in this field there exists a critical value of tunnel frequency. When the tunnel frequency is close to its critical value, the probability value of a definite direction of the current circulating in a Josephson-junction circuit may be kept above 1/2 during a desirable time interval. We also show that such a behavior is not much affected by a sufficiently small dissipation.

Feshbach projection-operator formalism to resonance scattering on Bargmann-type potentials

The projection-operator formalism of Feshbach is applied to resonance scattering in a single-channel case. The method is based on the division of the full function space into two segments, internal (localized) and external (infinitely extended). The spectroscopic information on the resonances is obtained from the non-Hermitian effective Hamilton operator $H_{\rm eff}$ appearing in the internal part due to the coupling to the external part. As well known, additional so-called cut-off poles of the $S$-matrix appear, generally, due to the truncation of the potential. We study the question of spurious $S$ matrix poles in the framework of the Feshbach formalism. The numerical analysis is performed for exactly solvable potentials with a finite number of resonance states. These potentials represent a generalization of Bargmann-type potentials to accept resonance states. Our calculations demonstrate that the poles of the $S$ matrix obtained by using the Feshbach projection-operator formalism coincide with both the complex energies of the physical resonances and the cut-off poles of the $S$-matrix.

The Naimark dilated PT-symmetric brachistochrone

The quantum mechanical brachistochrone system with PT-symmetric Hamiltonian is Naimark dilated and reinterpreted as subsystem of a Hermitian system in a higher-dimensional Hilbert space. This opens a way to a direct experimental implementation of the recently hypothesized PT-symmetric ultra-fast brachistochrone regime of [C. M. Bender et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 040403 (2007)] in an entangled two-spin system.

The PT-symmetric brachistochrone problem, Lorentz boosts and non-unitary operator equivalence classes

The PT-symmetric (PTS) quantum brachistochrone problem is reanalyzed as quantum system consisting of a non-Hermitian PTS component and a purely Hermitian component simultaneously. Interpreting this specific setup as subsystem of a larger Hermitian system, we find non-unitary operator equivalence classes (conjugacy classes) as natural ingredient which contain at least one Dirac-Hermitian representative. With the help of a geometric analysis the compatibility of the vanishing passage time solution of a PTS brachistochrone with the Anandan-Aharonov lower bound for passage times of Hermitian brachistochrones is demonstrated.

Exactly-solvable coupled-channel potential models of atom-atom magnetic Feshbach resonances from supersymmetric quantum mechanics

Starting from a system of $N$ radial Schrödinger equations with a vanishing potential and finite threshold differences between the channels, a coupled $N \times N$ exactly-solvable potential model is obtained with the help of a single non-conservative supersymmetric transformation. The obtained potential matrix, which subsumes a result obtained in the literature, has a compact analytical form, as well as its Jost matrix. It depends on $N (N+1)/2$ unconstrained parameters and on one upper-bounded parameter, the factorization energy. A detailed study of the model is done for the $2\times 2$ case: a geometrical analysis of the zeros of the Jost-matrix determinant shows that the model has 0, 1 or 2 bound states, and 0 or 1 resonance; the potential parameters are explicitly expressed in terms of its bound-state energies, of its resonance energy and width, or of the open-channel scattering length, which solves schematic inverse problems. As a first physical application, exactly-solvable $2\times 2$ atom-atom interaction potentials are constructed, for cases where a magnetic Feshbach resonance interplays with a bound or virtual state close to threshold, which results in a large background scattering length.

The spherically symmetric alpha2-dynamo and some of its spectral peculiarities

A brief overview is given over recent results on the spectral properties of spherically symmetric MHD alpha2-dynamos. In particular, the spectra of sphere-confined fluid or plasma configurations with physically realistic boundary conditions (BCs) (surrounding vacuum) and with idealized BCs (super-conducting surrounding) are discussed. The subjects comprise third-order branch points of the spectrum, self-adjointness of the dynamo operator in a Krein space as well as the resonant unfolding of diabolical points. It is sketched how certain classes of dynamos with a strongly localized alpha-profile embedded in a conducting surrounding can be mode decoupled by a diagonalization of the dynamo operator matrix. A mapping of the dynamo eigenvalue problem to that of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian with energy dependent potential is used to obtain qualitative information about the spectral behavior. Links to supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and to the Dirac equation are indicated.

Exact propagators for SUSY partners

Pairs of SUSY partner Hamiltonians are studied which are interrelated by usual (linear) or polynomial supersymmetry. Assuming the model of one of the Hamiltonians as exactly solvable with known propagator, expressions for propagators of partner models are derived. The corresponding general results are applied to "a particle in a box", the Harmonic oscillator and a free particle (i.e. to transparent potentials).

Two-level systems: exact solutions and underlying pseudo-supersymmetry

Chains of first-order SUSY transformations for the spin equation are studied in detail. It is shown that the transformation chains are related with a olynomial pseudo-supersymmetry of the system. Simple determinant formulas for the final Hamiltonian of a chain and for solutions of the spin equation are derived. Applications are intended for a two-level atom in an electromagnetic field with a possible time-dependence of the field frequency. For a specific form of this dependence, the time oscillations of the probability to populate the excited level disappear. Under certain conditions this probability becomes a function tending monotonously to a constant value which can exceed 1/2.
