Regular Curves, Singular Graphs: Cantor Parts and the Relaxed Willmore Energy

One might expect that finite relaxed elastic energy rules out diffuse singularities in the derivative, leaving only absolutely continuous and jump parts. This is suggested by the role of $SBV$ in free-discontinuity problems and by interpreting jumps as vertical segments of limiting graphs. We show that it fails for the relaxed one-dimensional Willmore energy. We construct a continuous function $u\in BV((0,1))$ with $D^c u\neq0$ and $\overline{\mathcal{W}}(u)<\infty $, so finite relaxed Willmore energy does not imply $u\in SBV((0,1))$. The idea is to concentrate the Cantor part exactly where the absolutely continuous slope blows up. There the singular diffuse measure meets the blow-up condition of the relaxation theorem, while the weighted curvature term stays integrable. Geometrically, the example shows that Cantor parts of $BV$-graph derivatives need not be intrinsic singularities of the underlying curve. The graph has an arc-length parametrization of class $C^1\cap W^{2,2}$, and a suitable rotation turns it into a Lipschitz graph whose derivative has no singular part. The construction also rescales to make the relaxed Willmore energy arbitrarily small, and it extends to relaxed $L^p$-curvature energies for all $p>1$.

The Willmore Flow of Graphs with Boundary Data: Low-Regularity Initial Data and Global Convergence

We study the Willmore flow for graphs over a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with Dirichlet (clamped) boundary conditions, a still little-studied setting that also serves as a prototype for higher-order flows with fixed boundary data. We develop a low-regularity theory that avoids the classical fourth-order compatibility condition at $t=0$. Combining a reformulation of the graphical equation, which isolates the quasilinear fourth-order principal part from the lower-order terms, with time-weighted parabolic H\"older spaces, we prove short-time existence for initial data in $C^{1+\alpha}(\overline\Omega)$ and, under a smallness assumption, also for Lipschitz data in $C^{0,1}(\overline\Omega)$, even when the initial Willmore energy is not defined. In the H\"older regime, uniqueness is obtained. In the small-data Lipschitz regime, we also prove global existence, uniform gradient bounds, and exponential convergence to a stationary solution of the elliptic Willmore equation with the prescribed boundary data. A key ingredient is an $L^2$-smallness criterion for graphical surfaces with small Willmore energy and small boundary values. The approach is mainly analytic and extends naturally to related higher-order geometric flows and other boundary conditions.

Graphical Willmore Problems with Low-Regularity Boundary and Dirichlet Data

We establish existence and regularity results for boundary value problems arising from the first variation of the Willmore energy in the graphical setting. Our focus lies on two-dimensional surfaces with fixed clamped boundary conditions, embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space, and represented as graphs of height functions over domains with non-smooth boundaries. Our approach involves constructing solutions through linearization and a fixed-point argument, requiring small boundary data in suitable functional spaces. Building on the results of Koch and Lamm \cite{koch2012geometric}, we rewrite the Willmore equation for graphs in a divergence form that allows the application of weighted second-order Sobolev spaces. This reformulation significantly weakens the regularity assumptions on both the boundary and the Dirichlet data, reducing them to the $C^{1+\alpha}$-class, while the solution remains smooth in the interior. Moreover, we extend the existence theory to domains with merely Lipschitz boundaries within a purely weighted Sobolev framework. Our approach is also applicable to other higher-order geometric PDEs, including the graphical Helfrich and surface diffusion equations.

Determination of the full statistics of quantum observables using the maximum entropy method

Numerical methods for the description of nonequilibrium many-particle quantum systems such as equation of motion techniques often cannot compute the full statistics of observables but only moments of it, such as mean, variance and higher-order moments. We employ here the maximum entropy method to numerically construct unbiased statistics based on the knowledge of moments. We verify the feasibility of the proposed method by numerical simulation of a simple birth-death model for quantum-dot-microcavity lasers, where the full photon and carrier statistics are available for comparison. We show that not only the constructed statistics but also the computed entropy and the Lagrange multipliers, which appear here as a byproduct, provide valuable insight into the physics of the considered system. For example, the entropy reveals that, in contrast to common wisdom, the photon statistics of the microcavity laser above threshold is better described by a Gaussian distribution than by a Poisson distribution. Our approach is general and can be applied to many other systems emerging in physics and related fields.
