Collective versus Single--Particle Motion in Quantum Many--Body Systems from the Perspective of an Integrable Model

We study the emergence of collective dynamics in the integrable Hamiltonian system of two finite ensembles of coupled harmonic oscillators. After identification of a collective degree of freedom, the Hamiltonian is mapped onto a model of Caldeira-Leggett type, where the collective coordinate is coupled to an internal bath of phonons. In contrast to the usual Caldeira-Leggett model, the bath in the present case is part of the system. We derive an equation of motion for the collective coordinate which takes the form of a damped harmonic oscillator. We show that the distribution of quantum transition strengths induced by the collective mode is determined by its classical dynamics.

Quantum Corrections to Fidelity Decay in Chaotic Systems

By considering correlations between classical orbits we derive semiclassical expressions for the decay of the quantum fidelity amplitude for classically chaotic quantum systems, as well as for its squared modulus, the fidelity or Loschmidt echo. Our semiclassical results for the fidelity amplitude agree with random matrix theory (RMT) and supersymmetry predictions in the universal Fermi golden rule regime. The calculated quantum corrections can be viewed as arising from a static random perturbation acting on nearly self-retracing interfering paths, and hence will be suppressed for time-varying perturbations. Moreover, using trajectory-based methods we show a relation, recently obtained in RMT, between the fidelity amplitude and the cross-form factor for parametric level correlations. Beyond RMT, we compute Ehrenfest-time effects on the fidelity amplitude. Furthermore our semiclassical approach allows for a unified treatment of the fidelity, both in the Fermi golden rule and Lyapunov regimes, demonstrating that quantum corrections are suppressed in the latter.

Entropic bounds on semiclassical measures for quantized one-dimensional maps

Quantum ergodicity asserts that almost all infinite sequences of eigenstates of a quantized ergodic system are equidistributed in the phase space. On the other hand, there are might exist exceptional sequences which converge to different (non-Liouville) classical invariant measures. By the remarkable result of N. Anantharaman and S. Nonnenmacher math-ph/0610019, arXiv:0704.1564 (with H. Koch), for Anosov geodesic flows the metric entropy of any semiclassical measure must be bounded from below. The result seems to be optimal for uniformly expanding systems, but not in general case, where it might become even trivial if the curvature of the Riemannian manifold is strongly non-uniform. It has been conjectured by the same authors, that in fact, a stronger bound (valid in general case) should hold. In the present work we consider such entropic bounds using the model of quantized one-dimensional maps. For a certain class of non-uniformly expanding maps we prove Anantharaman-Nonnenmacher conjecture. Furthermore, for these maps we are able to construct some explicit sequences of eigenstates which saturate the bound. This demonstrates that the conjectured bound is actually optimal in that case.

Dynamical "breaking" of time reversal symmetry and converse quantum ergodicity

It is a common assumption that quantum systems with time reversal invariance and classically chaotic dynamics have energy spectra distributed according to GOE-type of statistics. Here we present a class of systems which fail to follow this rule. We show that for convex billiards of constant width with time reversal symmetry and "almost" chaotic dynamics the energy level distribution is of GUE-type. The effect is due to the lack of ergodicity in the "momentum" part of the phase space and, as we argue, is generic in two dimensions. Besides, we show that certain billiards of constant width in multiply connected domains are of interest in relation to the quantum ergodicity problem. These billiards are quantum ergodic, but not classically ergodic.

Can billiard eigenstates be approximated by superpositions of plane waves?

The plane wave decomposition method (PWDM) is one of the most popular strategies for numerical solution of the quantum billiard problem. The method is based on the assumption that each eigenstate in a billiard can be approximated by a superposition of plane waves at a given energy. By the classical results on the theory of differential operators this can indeed be justified for billiards in convex domains. On the contrary, in the present work we demonstrate that eigenstates of non-convex billiards, in general, cannot be approximated by any solution of the Helmholtz equation regular everywhere in $\R^2$ (in particular, by linear combinations of a finite number of plane waves having the same energy). From this we infer that PWDM cannot be applied to billiards in non-convex domains. Furthermore, it follows from our results that unlike the properties of integrable billiards, where each eigenstate can be extended into the billiard exterior as a regular solution of the Helmholtz equation, the eigenstates of non-convex billiards, in general, do not admit such an extension.

Can One Hear the Shape of a Graph?

We show that the spectrum of the Schrodinger operator on a finite, metric graph determines uniquely the connectivity matrix and the bond lengths, provided that the lengths are non-commensurate and the connectivity is simple (no parallel bonds between vertices and no loops connecting a vertex to itself). That is, one can hear the shape of the graph! We also consider a related inversion problem: A compact graph can be converted into a scattering system by attaching to its vertices leads to infinity. We show that the scattering phase determines uniquely the compact part of the graph, under similar conditions as above.

Noise Delays Bifurcation in a Positively Coupled Neural Circuit

We report a noise induced delay of bifurcation in a simple pulse-coupled neural circuit. We study the behavior of two neural oscillators, each individually governed by saddle-node dynamics, with reciprocal excitatory synaptic connections. In the deterministic circuit, the synaptic current amplitude acts as a control parameter to move the circuit from a mono-stable regime through a bifurcation into a bistable regime. In this regime stable sustained anti-phase oscillations in both neurons coexist with a stable rest state. We introduce a small amount of random current into both neurons to model possible randomly arriving synaptic inputs. We find that such random noise delays the onset of bistability, even though in decoupled neurons noise tends to advance bifurcations and the circuit has only excitatory coupling. We show that the delay is dependent on the level of noise and suggest that a curious stochastic ``anti-resonance'' is present.

Hyperbolic Magnetic Billiards on Surfaces of Constant Curvature

We consider classical billiards on surfaces of constant curvature, where the charged billiard ball is exposed to a homogeneous, stationary magnetic field perpendicular to the surface. We establish sufficient conditions for hyperbolicity of the billiard dynamics, and give lower estimation for the Lyapunov exponent. This extends our recent results for non-magnetic billiards on surfaces of constant curvature. Using these conditions, we construct large classes of magnetic billiard tables with positive Lyapunov exponents on the plane, on the sphere and on the hyperbolic plane.
