Integrity bases for cubic nonlinear magnetostriction

A so-called smart material is a material that is the seat of one or more multiphysical coupling. One of the key points in the development of the constitutive laws of these materials, either at the local or at the global scale, is to formulate a free energy density (or enthalpy) from vectors, tensors, at a given order and for a class of given symmetry, depending on the symmetry classes of the crystal constituting the material or the symmetry of the representative volume element. This article takes as a support of study the stress and magnetization couple ($σ$, m) involved in the phenomena of magnetoelastic coupling in a cubic symmetry medium. Several studies indeed show a non-monotonic sensitivity of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetostriction of certain soft magnetic materials under stress. Modeling such a phenomenon requires the introduction of a second order stress term in the Gibbs free energy density. A polynomial formulation in the two variables stress and magnetization is preferred over a tensorial formulation. For a given material symmetry class, this allows to express more easily the free energy density at any bi-degree in $σ$ and m (i.e. at any constitutive tensors order for the so-called tensorial formulation). A rigorous and systematic method is essential to obtain the high-degree magneto-mechanical coupling terms and to build a free energy density function at any order which is invariant by the action of the cubic (octahedral) group. For that aim, theoretical and computer tools in Invariant Theory, that allow for the mathematical description of cubic nonlinear magneto-elasticity, are introduced. Minimal integrity bases of the invariant algebra for the pair (m, $σ$), under the proper (orientation-preserving) and the full cubic groups, are then proposed. The minimal integrity basis for the proper cubic group is constituted of 60 invariants, while the minimal integrity basis for the full cubic group (the one of interest for magneto-elasticity) is made up of 30 invariants. These invariants are formulated in a (coordinate free) intrinsic manner, using a generalized cross product to write some of them. The counting of independent invariants of a given multi-degree in (m, $σ$) is performed. It is shown accordingly that it is possible to list without error all the material parameters useful for the description of the coupled magnetoelastic behavior from the integrity basis. The technique is applied to derive general expressions $Ψ$ $\star$ ($σ$, m) of the free energy density at the magnetic domains scale exhibiting cubic symmetry. The classic results for an isotropic medium are recovered.

Continuous anisotropic damage as a twin modelling of discrete bi-dimensional fracture

In this contribution, the use of discrete simulations to formulate an anisotropic damage model is investigated. It is proposed to use a beam-particle model to perform numerical characterization tests. Indeed, this discrete model explicitly describes cracking by allowing displacement discontinuities and thus capture crack induced anisotropy. Through 2D discrete simulations, the evolution of the effective elasticity tensor for various loading tests, up to failure, is obtained. The analysis of these tensors through bi-dimensional harmonic decomposition is then performed to estimate the tensorial damage evolution. As a by-product of present work we obtain an upper bound of the distance to the orthotropic symmetry class of bi-dimensional elasticity.

Recovering the normal form of an elasticity tensor

We propose an effective geometrical approach to recover the normal form of a given Elasticity tensor, once we know its symmetry class. In other words, we produce a rotation which brings an Elasticity tensor onto its normal form, given its components in any orthonormal frame, and this for any tensor of any symmetry class. Our methodology relies on the use of specific covariants and on the geometric characterization of each symmetry class using these covariants. An algorithm to detect the symmetry class of an Elasticity tensor is finally formulated.

On the determination of plane and axial symmetries in linear Elasticity and Piezo-electricity

We formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for a unit vector n to generate a plane or axial symmetry of a constitutive tensor. For the elasticity tensor, these conditions consist of two polynomial equations of degree lower than four in the components of n. Compared to Cowin-Mehrabadi conditions, this is an improvement, since these equations involve only the normal vector n to the plane symmetry (and no vector perpendicular to n). Similar reduced algebraic conditions are obtained for linear piezo-electricity and for totally symmetric tensors up to order 6.

Reduced algebraic conditions for plane/axial tensorial symmetries

In this article, we formulate necessary and sufficient polynomial equations for the existence of a symmetry plane or an order-two axial symmetry for a totally symmetric tensor of order n $\ge$ 1. These conditions are effective and of degree n (the tensor's order) in the components of the normal to the plane (or the direction of the axial symmetry). These results are then extended to obtain necessary and sufficient polynomial conditions for the existence of such symmetries for an Elasticity tensor, a Piezo-electricity tensor or a Piezo-magnetism pseudo-tensor.

Geodesic completeness of the $H^{3/2}$ metric on $\mathrm{Diff}(S^{1})$

Of concern is the study of the long-time existence of solutions to the Euler--Arnold equation of the right-invariant $H^{3/2}$-metric on the diffeomorphism group of the circle. In previous work by Escher and Kolev it has been shown that this equation admits long-time solutions if the order $s$ of the metric is greater than $3/2$, the behaviour for the critical Sobolev index $s=3/2$ has been left open. In this article we fill this gap by proving the analogous result also for the boundary case. The behaviour of the $H^{3/2}$-metric is, however, still different from its higher order counter parts, as it does not induce a complete Riemannian metric on any group of Sobolev diffeomorphisms.

Well-posedness of the EPDiff equation with a pseudo-differential inertia operator

In this article we study the class of right-invariant, fractional order Sobolev-type metrics on groups of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold M. Our main result concerns well-posedness properties for the corresponding Euler-Arnold equations, also called the EPDiff equations, which are of importance in mathematical physics and in the field of shape analysis and template registration. Depending on the order of the metric, we will prove both local and global well-posedness results for these equations. As a result of our analysis we will also obtain new commutator estimates for elliptic pseudo-differential operators.

Generic separating sets for 3D elasticity tensors

We define what is a generic separating set of invariant functions (a.k.a. a weak functional basis) for tensors. We produce then two generic separating sets of polynomial invariants for 3D elasticity tensors, one made of 19 polynomials and one made of 21 polynomials (but easier to compute) and a generic separating set of 18 rational invariants. As a byproduct, a new integrity basis for the fourth-order harmonic tensor is provided.

Micromechanics based framework with second-order damage tensors

The harmonic product of tensors---leading to the concept of harmonic factorization---has been defined in a previous work (Olive et al, 2017). In the practical case of 3D crack density measurements on thin or thick walled structures, this mathematical tool allows us to factorize the harmonic (irreducible) part of the fourth-order damage tensor as an harmonic square: an exact harmonic square in 2D, an harmonic square over the set of so-called mechanically accessible directions for measurements in the 3D case. The corresponding micro-mechanics framework based on second---instead of fourth---order damage tensors is derived. An illustrating example is provided showing how the proposed framework allows for the modeling of the so-called hydrostatic sensitivity up to high damage levels.

Harmonic factorization and reconstruction of the elasticity tensor

In this paper, we propose a factorization of a fourth-order harmonic tensor into second-order tensors. We obtain moreover explicit equivariant reconstruction formulas, using second-order covariants, for transverse isotropic and orthotropic harmonic fourth-order tensors, and for trigonal and tetragonal harmonic fourth-order tensors up to a cubic fourth order covariant remainder.

A minimal integrity basis for the elasticity tensor

We definitively solve the old problem of finding a minimal integrity basis of polynomial invariants of the fourth-order elasticity tensor C. Decomposing C into its SO(3)-irreducible components we reduce this problem to finding joint invariants of a triplet (a, b, D), where a and b are second-order harmonic tensors, and D is a fourth-order harmonic tensor. Combining theorems of classical invariant theory and formal computations, a minimal integrity basis of 297 polynomial invariants for the elasticity tensor is obtained for the first time.

Fractional Sobolev metrics on spaces of immersed curves

Motivated by applications in the field of shape analysis, we study reparametrization invariant, fractional order Sobolev-type metrics on the space of smooth regular curves $\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^d)$ and on its Sobolev completions $\mathcal{I}^{q}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^{d})$. We prove local well-posedness of the geodesic equations both on the Banach manifold $\mathcal{I}^{q}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and on the Fréchet-manifold $\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^d)$ provided the order of the metric is greater or equal to one. In addition we show that the $H^s$-metric induces a strong Riemannian metric on the Banach manifold $\mathcal{I}^{s}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^{d})$ of the same order $s$, provided $s>\frac 32$. These investigations can be also interpreted as a generalization of the analysis for right invariant metrics on the diffeomorphism group.

Local well-posedness of the EPDiff equation: a survey

This article is a survey on the local well-posedness problem for the general EPDiff equation. The main contribution concerns recent results on local existence of the geodesics on $\mathrm{Diff}(\mathbb{T}^{d})$ and $\mathrm{Diff}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ when the inertia operator is a non-local Fourier multiplier.

Geometric investigations of a vorticity model equation

This article consists of a detailed geometric study of the one-dimensional vorticity model equation $$ω_{t} + uω_{x} + 2ωu_{x} = 0, \qquad ω= H u_{x}, \qquad t\in\mathbb{R},\; x\in S^{1}\,,$$ which is a particular case of the generalized Constantin-Lax-Majda equation. Wunsch showed that this equation is the Euler-Arnold equation on $\operatorname{Diff}(S^{1})$ when the latter is endowed with the right-invariant homogeneous $\dot{H}^{1/2}$-metric. In this article we prove that the exponential map of this Riemannian metric is not Fredholm and that the sectional curvature is locally unbounded. Furthermore, we prove a Beale-Kato-Majda-type blow-up criterion, which we then use to demonstrate a link to our non-Fredholmness result. Finally, we extend a blow-up result of Castro-Córdoba to the periodic case and to a much wider class of initial conditions, using a new generalization of an inequality for Hilbert transforms due to Córdoba-Córdoba.

Local and Global Well-posedness of the fractional order EPDiff equation on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$

Of concern is the study of fractional order Sobolev--type metrics on the group of $H^{\infty}$-diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and on its Sobolev completions $\mathcal{D}^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. It is shown that the $H^{s}$-Sobolev metric induces a strong and smooth Riemannian metric on the Banach manifolds $\mathcal{D}^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ for $s >1 + \frac{d}{2}$. As a consequence a global well-posedness result of the corresponding geodesic equations, both on the Banach manifold $\mathcal{D}^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and on the smooth regular Fréchet-Lie group of all $H^{\infty}$-diffeomorphisms is obtained. In addition a local existence result for the geodesic equation for metrics of order $\frac{1}{2} \leq s < 1 + d/2$ is derived.

Two-component equations modelling water waves with constant vorticity

In this paper we derive a two-component system of nonlinear equations which model two-dimensional shallow water waves with constant vorticity. Then we prove well-posedness of this equation using a geometrical framework which allows us to recast this equation as a geodesic flow on an infinite dimensional manifold. Finally, we provide a criteria for global existence.

Right-invariant Sobolev metrics of fractional order on the diffeomorphism group of the circle

In this paper, we study the geodesic flow of a right-invariant metric induced by a general Fourier multiplier on the diffeomorphism group of the circle and on some of its homogeneous spaces. This study covers in particular right-invariant metrics induced by Sobolev norms of fractional order. We show that, under a certain condition on the symbol of the inertia operator (which is satisfied for the fractional Sobolev norm $H^{s}$ for $s \ge 1/2$), the corresponding initial value problem is well-posed in the smooth category and that the Riemannian exponential map is a smooth local diffeomorphism. Paradigmatic examples of our general setting cover, besides all traditional Euler equations induced by a local inertia operator, the Constantin-Lax-Majda equation, and the Euler-Weil-Petersson equation.
