Existence and Regularity Results for a Nonlinear Fluid-Structure Interaction Problem with Three-Dimensional Structural Displacement

In this paper we investigate a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem involving the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid in a 3D domain interacting with a thin viscoelastic lateral wall. The wall's elastodynamics is modeled by a two-dimensional plate equation with fractional damping, accounting for displacement in all three directions. The system is nonlinearly coupled through kinematic and dynamic conditions imposed at the time-varying fluid-structure interface, whose location is not known a priori. We establish three key results, particularly significant for FSI problems that account for vector displacements of thin structures. Specifically, we first establish a hidden spatial regularity for the structure displacement, which forms the basis for proving that self-contact of the structure will not occur within a finite time interval. Secondly, we demonstrate temporal regularity for both the structure and fluid velocities, which enables a new compactness result for three-dimensional structural displacements. Finally, building on these regularity results, we prove the existence of a local-in-time weak solution to the FSI problem. This is done through a constructive proof using time discretization via the Lie operator splitting method. These results are significant because they address the well-known issues associated with the analysis of nonlinearly coupled FSI problems capturing vector displacements of elastic/viscoelastic structures in 3D, such as spatial and temporal regularity of weak solutions and their well-posedness.

Analysis and finite element approximation of a diffuse interface approach to the Stokes--Biot coupling

We consider the interaction between a poroelastic structure, described using the Biot model in primal form, and a free-flowing fluid, modelled with the time-dependent incompressible Stokes equations. We propose a diffuse interface model in which a phase field function is used to write each integral in the weak formulation of the coupled problem on the entire domain containing both the Stokes and Biot regions. The phase field function continuously transitions from one to zero over a diffuse region of width $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ around the interface; this allows the equations to be posed uniformly across the domain, and obviates tracking the subdomains or the interface between them. We prove convergence in weighted norms of a finite element discretisation of the diffuse interface model to the continuous diffuse model; here the weight is a power of the distance to the diffuse interface. We in turn prove convergence of the continuous diffuse model to the standard, sharp interface, model. Numerical examples verify the proven error estimates, and illustrate application of the method to fluid flow through a complex network, describing blood circulation in the circle of Willis.

Fluid-poroviscoelastic structure interaction problem with nonlinear geometric coupling

We investigate weak solutions to a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem between the flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations, and a poroviscoelastic medium modeled by the Biot equations. These systems are coupled nonlinearly across an interface with mass and elastic energy, modeled by a reticular plate equation, which is transparent to fluid flow. We provide a constructive proof of the existence of a weak solution to a regularized problem. Next, a weak-classical consistency result is obtained, showing that the weak solution to the regularized problem converges, as the regularization parameter approaches zero, to a {classical} solution to the original problem, when such a classicalsolution exists. While the assumptions in the first step only require the Biot medium to be poroelastic, the second step requires additional regularity, namely, that the Biot medium is poroviscoelastic. This is the first weak solution existence result for an FSI problem with nonlinear coupling involving a Biot model for poro(visco)elastic media.

Global weak solutions in nonlinear 3D thermoelasticity

Here we study a nonlinear thermoelasticity hyperbolic-parabolic system describing the balance of momentum and internal energy of a heat-conducting elastic body, preserving the positivity of temperature. So far, no global existence results in such a natural case were available. Our result is obtained by using thermodynamically justified variables which allow us to obtain an equivalent system in which the internal energy balance is replaced with entropy balance. For this system, a concept of weak solution with defect measure is introduced, which satisfies entropy inequality instead of balance and has a positive temperature almost everywhere. Then, the global existence, consistency and weak-strong uniqueness are shown in the cases where heat capacity and heat conductivity are both either constant or non-constant. Let us point out that this is the first result concerning global existence for large initial data in nonlinear thermoelasticity where the model is in full accordance with the laws of thermodynamics.

Global weak solutions to a 3D/3D fluid-structure interaction problem including possible contacts

In this paper, we study an interaction problem between a $3D$ compressible viscous fluid and a $3D$ nonlinear viscoelastic solid fully immersed in the fluid, coupled together on the interface surface. The solid is allowed to have self-contact or contact with the rigid boundary of the fluid container. For this problem, a global weak solution with defect measure is constructed by using a multi-layered approximation scheme which decouples the body and the fluid by penalizing the fluid velocity and allowing the fluid to pass through the body, while the body is supplemented with a contact-penalization term. The resulting defect measure is a consequence of pressure concentrations that can appear where the fluid meets the (generally irregular) points of self-contact of the solid. Moreover, we study some geometrical properties of the fluid-structure interface and the contact surface. In particular, we prove a lower bound on area of the interface.

On the regularity of weak solutions to the fluid-rigid body interaction problem

We study a 3D fluid-rigid body interaction problem. The fluid flow is governed by 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the motion of the rigid body is described by a system of ordinary differential equations describing conservation of linear and angular momentum. Our aim is to prove that any weak solution satisfying certain regularity conditions is smooth. This is a generalization of the classical result for the $3D$ incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which says that a weak solution that additionally satisfy Prodi - Serrin $L^r-L^s$ condition is smooth. We show that in the case of fluid - rigid body the Prodi - Serrin conditions imply $W^{2,p}$ and $W^{1,p}$ regularity for the fluid velocity and fluid pressure, respectively. Moreover, we show that solutions are $C^{\infty}$ if additionally we assume that the rigid body acceleration is bounded almost anywhere in time variable.

Mathematical Effects of Linear Visco-elasticity in Quasi-static Biot Models

We investigate and clarify the mathematical properties of linear poro-elastic systems in the presence of classical (linear, Kelvin-Voigt) visco-elasticity. In particular, we quantify the time-regularizing and dissipative effects of visco-elasticity in the context of the quasi-static Biot equations. The full, coupled pressure-displacement presentation of the system is utilized, as well as the framework of implicit, degenerate evolution equations, to demonstrate such effects and characterize linear poro-visco-elastic systems. We consider a simple presentation of the dynamics (with convenient boundary conditions, etc.) for clarity in exposition across several relevant parameter ranges. Clear well-posedness results are provided, with associated a priori estimates on the solutions. In addition, precise statements of admissible initial conditions in each scenario are given.

Existence and regularity of weak solutions for a fluid interacting with a non-linear shell in three dimensions

We study the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions interacting with a non-linear flexible shell of Koiter type. This leads to a coupled system of non-linear PDEs where the moving part of the boundary is an unknown of the problem. The known existence theory for weak solutions is extended to non-linear Koiter shell models. We introduce a-priori estimates that reveal higher regularity of the shell displacement beyond energy estimates. These are essential for non-linear Koiter shell models, since such shell models are non-convex (w.r.t.\ terms of highest order). The estimates are obtained by introducing new analytical tools that allow to exploit dissipative effects of the fluid for the (non-dissipative) solid. The regularity result depends on the geometric constitution alone and is independent of the approximation procedure; hence it holds for arbitrary weak solutions. The developed tools are further used to introduce a generalized Aubin-Lions type compactness result suitable for fluid-structure interactions.

Analysis of a diffuse interface method for the Stokes-Darcy coupled problem

We consider the interaction between a free flowing fluid and a porous medium flow, where the free flowing fluid is described using the time dependent Stokes equations, and the porous medium flow is described using Darcy's law in the primal formulation. To solve this problem numerically, we use a diffuse interface approach, where the weak form of the coupled problem is written on an extended domain which contains both Stokes and Darcy regions. This is achieved using a phase-field function which equals one in the Stokes region and zero in the Darcy region, and smoothly transitions between these two values on a diffuse region of width $\mathcal{O}(ε)$ around the Stokes-Darcy interface. We prove convergence of the diffuse interface formulation to the standard, sharp interface formulation, and derive rates of convergence. This is performed by deriving a priori error estimates for discretizations of the diffuse interface method, and by analyzing the modeling error of the diffuse interface approach at the continuous level. The convergence rates are also shown computationally in a numerical example.

Existence of a weak solution to a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem with heat exchange

In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between a thermoelastic shell and a heat-conducting fluid. The shell is governed by linear thermoelasticity equations and encompasses a time-dependent domain which is filled with a fluid governed by the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. The fluid and the shell are fully coupled, giving rise to a novel nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem involving heat exchange. The existence of a weak solution is obtained by combining three approximation techniques -- decoupling, penalization and domain extension. This approximation scheme allows us to use the methods already developed for fluids on moving domains, thus drastically simplifying the analysis at hand.

Weak Solutions in Nonlinear Poroelasticity with Incompressible Constituents

We consider quasi-static poroelastic systems with incompressible constituents. The nonlinear permeability is taken to be dependent on solid dilation, and physical types of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, and mixed) for the fluid pressure are considered. Such dynamics are motivated by applications in biomechanics and, in particular, tissue perfusion. This system represents a nonlinear, implicit, degenerate evolution problem. We provide a direct fixed point strategy for proving the existence of weak solutions, which is made possible by a novel result on the uniqueness of weak solution to the associated linear system (the permeability a given function of space and time). The linear uniqueness proof is based on novel energy estimates for arbitrary weak solutions, rather than just for constructed solutions (as limits of approximants). The results of this work provide a foundation for addressing strong solutions, as well uniqueness of weak solutions for the nonlinear porous media system.

Justification of a nonlinear sixth-order thin-film equation as the reduced model for a fluid -- structure interaction problem

Starting from a nonlinear 2D/1D fluid-structure interaction problem between a thin layer of a viscous fluid and a thin elastic structure, on the vanishing limit of the relative fluid thickness, we rigorously derive a sixth-order thin-film equation describing the dynamics of vertical displacements of the structure. The procedure is essentially based on quantitative energy estimates, quantified in terms of the relative fluid thickness, and a uniform no-contact result between the structure and the solid substrate. The sixth-order thin-film equation is justified in the sense of strong convergence of rescaled structure displacements to the unique positive classical solution of the thin-film equation. Moreover, the limit fluid velocity and the pressure can be expressed solely in terms of the solution to the thin-film equation.

Rational Decay of A Multilayered Structure-Fluid PDE System

In this work, we consider a certain multilayered (thick layer) wave--(thin layer) wave--heat (fluid) interactive PDE system. Such coupled PDE systems have been used in the literature to describe the blood transport process in mammalian vascular systems. In particular, the deformations of the boundary interface (thin layer) are described via the two dimensional elastic equation. The present work constitutes an investigation of the extent of the stabilizing effects of the underlying fluid dissipation -- across the boundary interface -- upon both the thick and thin structural components. (All three PDE components evolve on their respective geometries.) In this regard, our main result is the derivation of uniform decay rates for classical solutions of this multilayered PDE model. To obtain these estimates, necessary a priori inequalities for certain static multilayered PDE models are generated here to ultimately allow an application of a wellknown resolvent criterion for rational decay.

Vectorial variational problems in $L^\infty$ constrained by the Navier-Stokes equations

We study a minimisation problem in $L^p$ and $L^\infty$ for certain cost functionals, where the class of admissible mappings is constrained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Problems of this type are motivated by variational data assimilation for atmospheric flows arising in weather forecasting. Herein we establish the existence of PDE-constrained minimisers for all $p$, and also that $L^p$ minimisers converge to $L^\infty$ minimisers as $p\to\infty$. We further show that $L^p$ minimisers solve an Euler-Lagrange system. Finally, all special $L^\infty$ minimisers constructed via approximation by $L^p$ minimisers are shown to solve a divergence PDE system involving measure coefficients, which is a divergence-form counterpart of the corresponding non-divergence Aronsson-Euler system.

Lp-strong solution to fluid-rigid body interaction system with Navier slip boundary condition

We study a fluid-structure interaction problem describing movement of a rigid body inside a bounded domain filled by a viscous fluid. The fluid is modelled by the generalized incompressible Naiver-Stokes equations which include cases of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via the Navier slip boundary conditions and balance of forces at the fluid-rigid body interface. Our analysis also includes the case of the nonlinear slip condition. The main results assert the existence of strong solutions, in an $L^p-L^q$ setting, globally in time, for small data in the Newtonian case, while existence of strong solutions in $L^p$-spaces, locally in time, is obtained for non-Newtonian case. The proof for the Newtonian fluid essentially uses the maximal regularity property of the associated linear system which is obtained by proving the $\mathcal{R}$-sectoriality of the corresponding operator. The existence and regularity result for the general non-Newtonian fluid-solid system then relies upon the previous case. Moreover, we also prove the exponential stability of the system in the Newtonian case.

Multilayered Poroelasticity Interacting with Stokes Flow

We consider the interaction between an incompressible, viscous fluid modeled by the dynamic Stokes equation and a multilayered poroelastic structure which consists of a thin, linear, poroelastic plate layer (in direct contact with the free Stokes flow) and a thick Biot layer. The fluid flow and the elastodynamics of the multilayered poroelastic structure are fully coupled across a fixed interface through physical coupling conditions (including the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman condition), which present mathematical challenges related to the regularity of associated velocity traces. We prove existence of weak solutions to this fluid-structure interaction problem with either (i) a linear, dynamic Biot model, or (ii) a nonlinear quasi-static Biot component, where the permeability is a nonlinear function of the fluid content (as motivated by biological applications). The proof is based on constructing approximate solutions through Rothe's method, and using energy methods and a version of Aubin-Lions compactness lemma (in the nonlinear case) to recover the weak solution as the limit of approximate subsequences. We also provide uniqueness criteria and show that constructed weak solutions are indeed strong solutions to the coupled problem if one assumes additional regularity.

A uniqueness result for 3D incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction problem

We study a 3D nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem describing the interaction of the fluid flow with a rigid body. The fluid flow is governed by 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the motion of the rigid body is described by a system of ordinary differential equations called Euler equations for the rigid body. The equations are fully coupled via dynamical and kinematic coupling conditions. We consider two different kinds of kinematic coupling conditions: no-slip and slip. In both cases we prove a generalization of the well-known weak-strong uniqueness result for the Navier-Stokes equations to the fluid-rigid body system. More precisely, we prove that weak solutions that additionally satisfy Prodi-Serrin $L^r-L^s$ condition are unique in the class of Leray-Hopf weak solutions.

Rigorous derivation of a linear sixth-order thin-film equation as a reduced model for thin fluid -- thin structure interaction problems

We analyze a linear 3D/3D fluid-structure interaction problem between a thin layer of a viscous fluid and a thin elastic plate-like structure with the aim of deriving a simplified reduced model. Based on suitable energy dissipation inequalities quantified in terms of two small parameters, thickness of the fluid layer and thickness of the elastic structure, we identify the right relation between the system coefficients and small parameters which eventually provide a reduced model on the vanishing limit. The reduced model is a linear sixth-order thin-film equation describing the out-of-plane displacement of the structure, which is justified in terms of weak convergence results relating its solution to the solutions of the original fluid-structure interaction problem. Furthermore, approximate solutions to the fluid-structure interaction problem are reconstructed from the reduced model and quantitative error estimates are obtained, which provide even strong convergence results.
