Large D-instanton effects in string theory

By reduction along the time direction, black holes in 4 dimensions yield instantons in 3 dimensions. Each of these instantons contributes individually at order $\exp(-|Q|/g_s)$ to certain protected couplings in the three-dimensional effective action, but the number of distinct instantons is expected to be equal (or comparable) to the number of black hole micro-states, i.e. of order $\exp(Q^2)$. The same phenomenon also occurs for certain protected couplings in four dimensions, such as the hypermultiplet metric in type II string theories compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. In either case, the D-instanton series is therefore asymptotic, much like the perturbative expansion in any quantum field theory. By using a Borel-type resummation method, adapted to the Gaussian growth of the D-instanton series, we find that the total D-instanton sum has an inherent ambiguity of order $\exp(-1/g_s^2)$. We further suggest that this ambiguity can be lifted by including Kaluza-Klein monopole or NS5-brane instantons.

A Farey tale for N=4 dyons

We study exponentially suppressed contributions to the degeneracies of extremal black holes. Within Sen's quantum entropy function framework and focusing on extremal black holes with an intermediate AdS3 region, we identify an infinite family of semi-classical AdS2 geometries which can contribute effects of order exp(S_0/c), where S_0 is the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy and c is an integer greater than one. These solutions lift to the extremal limit of the SL(2,Z) family of BTZ black holes familiar from the "black hole Farey tail". We test this understanding in N=4 string vacua, where exact dyon degeneracies are known to be given by Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms. We relate the sum over poles in the Siegel upper half plane to the Farey tail expansion, and derive a "Farey tale" expansion for the dyon partition function. Mathematically, this provides a (formal) lift from Hilbert modular forms to Siegel modular forms with a pole at the diagonal divisor.

Quasi-conformal actions, quaternionic discrete series and twistors: SU(2,1) and G_2(2)

Quasi-conformal actions were introduced in the physics literature as a generalization of the familiar fractional linear action on the upper half plane, to Hermitian symmetric tube domains based on arbitrary Jordan algebras, and further to arbitrary Freudenthal triple systems. In the mathematics literature, quaternionic discrete series unitary representations of real reductive groups in their quaternionic real form were constructed as degree 1 cohomology on the twistor spaces of symmetric quaternionic-Kahler spaces. These two constructions are essentially identical, as we show explicitly for the two rank 2 cases SU(2,1) and G_{2(2)}. We obtain explicit results for certain principal series, quaternionic discrete series and minimal representations of these groups, including formulas for the lowest K-types in various polarizations. We expect our results to have applications to topological strings, black hole micro-state counting and to the theory of automorphic forms.

Linear perturbations of Hyperkahler metrics

We study general linear perturbations of a class of 4d real-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds obtainable by the (generalized) Legendre transform method. Using twistor methods, we show that deformations can be encoded in a set of holomorphic functions of 2d+1 variables, as opposed to the functions of d+1 variables controlling the unperturbed metric. Such deformations generically break all tri-holomorphic isometries of the unperturbed metric. Geometrically, these functions generate the symplectomorphisms which relate local complex Darboux coordinate systems in different patches of the twistor space. The deformed Kahler potential follows from these data by a Penrose-type transform. As an illustration of our general framework, we determine the leading exponential deviation of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold away from its negative mass Taub-NUT limit. In a companion paper arXiv:0810.1675, we extend these techniques to quaternionic-Kahler spaces with isometries.

5D Black Holes and Non-linear Sigma Models

Stationary solutions of 5D supergravity with U(1) isometry can be efficiently studied by dimensional reduction to three dimensions, where they reduce to solutions to a locally supersymmetric non-linear sigma model. We generalize this procedure to 5D gauged supergravity, and identify the corresponding gauging in 3D. We pay particular attention to the case where the Killing spinor is non constant along the fibration, which results, even for ungauged supergravity in 5D, in an additional gauging in 3D, without introducing any extra potential. We further study SU(2)\times U(1) symmetric solutions, which correspond to geodesic motion on the sigma model (with potential in the gauged case). We identify and study the algebra of BPS constraints relevant for the Breckenridge-Myers-Peet-Vafa black hole, the Gutowski-Reall black hole and several other BPS solutions, and obtain the corresponding radial wave functions in the semi-classical approximation.

Linear perturbations of quaternionic metrics

We extend the twistor methods developed in our earlier work on linear deformations of hyperkahler manifolds [arXiv:0806.4620] to the case of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds. Via Swann's construction, deformations of a 4d-dimensional quaternionic-Kahler manifold $M$ are in one-to-one correspondence with deformations of its $4d+4$-dimensional hyperkahler cone $S$. The latter can be encoded in variations of the complex symplectomorphisms which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_S$, with a suitable homogeneity condition that ensures that the hyperkahler cone property is preserved. Equivalently, we show that the deformations of $M$ can be encoded in variations of the complex contact transformations which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_M$ of $M$, by-passing the Swann bundle and its twistor space. We specialize these general results to the case of quaternionic-Kahler metrics with $d+1$ commuting isometries, obtainable by the Legendre transform method, and linear deformations thereof. We illustrate our methods for the hypermultiplet moduli space in string theory compactifications at tree- and one-loop level.

D-instantons and twistors

Finding the exact, quantum corrected metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space in Type II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds is an outstanding open problem. We address this issue by relating the quaternionic-Kahler metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space to the complex contact geometry on its twistor space. In this framework, Euclidean D-brane instantons are captured by contact transformations between different patches. We derive those by recasting the previously known A-type D2-instanton corrections in the language of contact geometry, covariantizing the result under electro-magnetic duality, and using mirror symmetry. As a result, we are able to express the effects of all D-instantons in Type II compactifications concisely as a sum of dilogarithm functions. We conclude with some comments on the relation to microscopic degeneracies of four-dimensional BPS black holes and to the wall-crossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman, and on the form of the yet unknown NS5-brane instanton contributions.

Topological wave functions and the 4D-5D lift

We revisit the holomorphic anomaly equations satisfied by the topological string amplitude from the perspective of the 4D-5D lift, in the context of ''magic'' N=2 supergravity theories. In particular, we interpret the Gopakumar-Vafa relation between 5D black hole degeneracies and the topological string amplitude as the result of a canonical transformation from 4D to 5D charges. Moreover we use the known Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of 5D black holes to constrain the asymptotic behavior of the topological wave function at finite topological coupling but large Kähler classes. In the process, some subtleties in the relation between 5D black hole degeneracies and the topological string amplitude are uncovered, but not resolved. Finally we extend these considerations to the putative one-parameter generalization of the topological string amplitude, and identify the canonical transformation as a Weyl reflection inside the 3D duality group.

N=4 BPS black holes and octonionic twistors

Stationary, spherically symmetric solutions of N=2 supergravity in 3+1 dimensions have been shown to correspond to holomorphic curves on the twistor space of the quaternionic-Kähler space which arises in the dimensional reduction along the time direction. In this note, we generalize this result to the case of 1/4-BPS black holes in N=4 supergravity, and show that they too can be lifted to holomorphic curves on a "twistor space" Z, obtained by fibering the Grassmannian F=SO(8)/U(4) over the moduli space in three-dimensions SO(8,n_v+2)/SO(8)xSO(n_v+2). This provides a kind of octonionic generalization of the standard constructions in quaternionic geometry, and may be useful for generalizing the known BPS black hole solutions, and finding new non-BPS extremal solutions.

Topological wave functions and heat equations

It is generally known that the holomorphic anomaly equations in topological string theory reflect the quantum mechanical nature of the topological string partition function. We present two new results which make this assertion more precise: (i) we give a new, purely holomorphic version of the holomorphic anomaly equations, clarifying their relation to the heat equation satisfied by the Jacobi theta series; (ii) in cases where the moduli space is a Hermitian symmetric tube domain $G/K$, we show that the general solution of the anomaly equations is a matrix element $\IP{Ψ| g | Ω}$ of the Schrödinger-Weil representation of a Heisenberg extension of $G$, between an arbitrary state $\braΨ$ and a particular vacuum state $\ketΩ$. Based on these results, we speculate on the existence of a one-parameter generalization of the usual topological amplitude, which in symmetric cases transforms in the smallest unitary representation of the duality group $G'$ in three dimensions, and on its relations to hypermultiplet couplings, nonabelian Donaldson-Thomas theory and black hole degeneracies.

Higher Derivative Corrections, Dimensional Reduction and Ehlers Duality

Motivated by applications to black hole physics and duality, we study the effect of higher derivative corrections on the dimensional reduction of four-dimensional Einstein, Einstein Liouville and Einstein-Maxwell gravity to one direction, as appropriate for stationary, spherically symmetric solutions. We construct a field redefinition scheme such that the one-dimensional Lagrangian is corrected only by powers of first derivatives of the fields, eliminating spurious modes and providing a suitable starting point for quantization. We show that the Ehlers symmetry, broken by the leading $R^2$ corrections in Einstein-Liouville gravity, can be restored by including contributions of Taub-NUT instantons. Finally, we give a preliminary discussion of the duality between higher-derivative F-term corrections on the vector and hypermultiplet branches in N=2 supergravity in four dimensions.

Quantum Attractor Flows

Motivated by the interpretation of the Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa conjecture as a holographic correspondence in the mini-superspace approximation, we study the radial quantization of stationary, spherically symmetric black holes in four dimensions. A key ingredient is the classical equivalence between the radial evolution equation and geodesic motion of a fiducial particle on the moduli space M^*_3 of the three-dimensional theory after reduction along the time direction. In the case of N=2 supergravity, M^*_3 is a para-quaternionic-Kahler manifold; in this case, we show that BPS black holes correspond to a particular class of geodesics which lift holomorphically to the twistor space Z of M^*_3, and identify Z as the BPS phase space. We give a natural quantization of the BPS phase space in terms of the sheaf cohomology of Z, and compute the exact wave function of a BPS black hole with fixed electric and magnetic charges in this framework. We comment on the relation to the topological string amplitude, extensions to N>2 supergravity theories, and applications to automorphic black hole partition functions.

Twistors and Black Holes

Motivated by black hole physics in N=2, D=4 supergravity, we study the geometry of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds M obtained by the c-map construction from projective special Kahler manifolds M_s. Improving on earlier treatments, we compute the Kahler potentials on the twistor space Z and Swann space S in the complex coordinates adapted to the Heisenberg symmetries. The results bear a simple relation to the Hesse potential Σof the special Kahler manifold M_s, and hence to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for BPS black holes. We explicitly construct the ``covariant c-map'' and the ``twistor map'', which relate real coordinates on M x CP^1 (resp. M x R^4/Z_2) to complex coordinates on Z (resp. S). As applications, we solve for the general BPS geodesic motion on M, and provide explicit integral formulae for the quaternionic Penrose transform relating elements of H^1(Z,O(-k)) to massless fields on M annihilated by first or second order differential operators. Finally, we compute the exact radial wave function (in the supergravity approximation) for BPS black holes with fixed electric and magnetic charges.

Lectures on on Black Holes, Topological Strings and Quantum Attractors (2.0)

In these lecture notes, we review some recent developments on the relation between the macroscopic entropy of four-dimensional BPS black holes and the microscopic counting of states, beyond the thermodynamical, large charge limit. After a brief overview of charged black holes in supergravity and string theory, we give an extensive introduction to special and very special geometry, attractor flows and topological string theory, including holomorphic anomalies. We then expose the Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa (OSV) conjecture which relates microscopic degeneracies to the topological string amplitude, and review precision tests of this formula on ``small'' black holes. Finally, motivated by a holographic interpretation of the OSV conjecture, we give a systematic approach to the radial quantization of BPS black holes (i.e. quantum attractors). This suggests the existence of a one-parameter generalization of the topological string amplitude, and provides a general framework for constructing automorphic partition functions for black hole degeneracies in theories with sufficient degree of symmetry.

BPS black holes, quantum attractor flows and automorphic forms

We propose a program for counting microstates of four-dimensional BPS black holes in N >= 2 supergravities with symmetric-space valued scalars by exploiting the symmetries of timelike reduction to three dimensions. Inspired by the equivalence between the four dimensional attractor flow and geodesic flow on the three-dimensional scalar manifold, we radially quantize stationary, spherically symmetric BPS geometries. Connections between the topological string amplitude, attractor wave function, the Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa conjecture and the theory of automorphic forms suggest that black hole degeneracies are counted by Fourier coefficients of modular forms for the three-dimensional U-duality group, associated to special "unipotent" representations which appear in the supersymmetric Hilbert space of the quantum attractor flow.

BPS Black Hole Degeneracies and Minimal Automorphic Representations

We discuss the degeneracies of 4D and 5D BPS black holes in toroidal compactifications of M-theory or type II string theory, using U-duality as a tool. We generalize the 4D/5D lift to include all charges in N=8 supergravity, and compute the exact indexed degeneracies of certain 4D 1/8-BPS black holes. Using the attractor formalism, we obtain the leading micro-canonical entropy for arbitrary Legendre invariant prepotentials and non-vanishing D6-brane charge. In particular, we find that the N=8 prepotential is given to leading order by the cubic invariant of $E_6$. This suggests that the minimal unitary representation of $E_8$, based on the same cubic prepotential, underlies the microscopic degeneracies of N=8 black holes. We propose that the exact degeneracies are given by the Wigner function of the $E_8(Z)$ invariant vector in this automorphic representation. A similar conjecture relates the degeneracies of N=4 black holes to the minimal unipotent representation of $SO(8,24,Z)$.

Exact and Asymptotic Degeneracies of Small Black Holes

We examine the recently proposed relations between black hole entropy and the topological string in the context of type II/heterotic string dual models. We consider the degeneracies of perturbative heterotic BPS states. In several examples with N=4 and N=2 supersymmetry, we show that the macroscopic degeneracy of small black holes agrees to all orders with the microscopic degeneracy, but misses non-perturbative corrections which are computable on the heterotic side. Using these examples we refine the previous proposals and comment on their domain of validity as well as on the relevance of helicity supertraces.

Aspects of Dirichlet S-branes

In this note, we discuss some features of the Dirichlet S-brane, defined as a Dirichlet boundary condition on a time-like embedding coordinate of open strings. We analyze the Euclidean theory on the S-brane world-volume, and trace its instability to the infinite fine-tuning of the initial conditions required to produce an infinitely extended space-like defect. Using their equivalence under T-duality with D-branes with supercritical electric field, we argue that under generic perturbation, S-branes turn into D-brane / anti-D-branes. We extract the imaginary part of the cylinder amplitude, and interpret its inverse as a ``decay length'', beyond which a pair of S-branes annihilates. Finally, we reconsider the boundary state of the Dirichlet S-brane and find that it is either a solution of type II string theory with imaginary R-R fields, or a solution of type II$^*$ with real fields. This leaves the non-BPS S-branes as potentially physical solutions of type II string theory.
