Embedding transmission problems for Maxwell's equations into elliptic theory

We embed general boundary value problems for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations into the elliptic boundary value theory. This is achieved by introducing two new scalar functions to the electromagnetic field and imposing additional boundary conditions, after which the problem becomes elliptic. The results are applied to general problems for Maxwell's equations in bounded and unbounded domains, as well as to the transmission problem with inhomogeneities on the right-hand side of the equations and at all boundaries. Relations between the inhomogeneities of the elliptic problem are established that provide a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions of Maxwell's problem and the solutions of the elliptic boundary value problem. As an application, the existence of an orthogonal basis from the eigenfunctions of the general Maxwell's problem is justified.

Spectral properties of operators and wave propagation in high-contrast media

The paper aims to study the spectral properties of elliptic operators with highly inhomogeneous coefficients and related issues concerning wave propagation in high-contrast media. A unified approach to solving problems in bounded domains with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, as well as in infinite periodic media, is proposed. For a small parameter $\varepsilon > 0$ characterizing the contrast of the components of the medium, the analyticity of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions is established in a neighborhood of $\varepsilon = 0$. Effective operators corresponding to $\varepsilon = 0$ are described.

Spectral Analysis of Lattice Schrödinger-Type Operators Associated with the Nonstationary Anderson Model and Intermittency

The research explores a high irregularity, commonly referred to as intermittency, of the solution to the non-stationary parabolic Anderson problem: \begin{equation*} \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} = \varkappa \mathcal{L}u(t,x) + ξ_{t}(x)u(t,x) \end{equation*} with the initial condition \(u(0,x) \equiv 1\), where \((t,x) \in [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{Z}^d\). Here, \(\varkappa \mathcal{L}\) denotes a non-local Laplacian, and \(ξ_{t}(x)\) is a correlated white noise potential. The observed irregularity is intricately linked to the upper part of the spectrum of the multiparticle Schrödinger equations for the moment functions \(m_p(t,x_1,x_2,\cdots,x_p) = \langle u(t,x_1)u(t,x_2)\cdots u(t,x_p)\rangle\). In the first half of the paper, a weak form of intermittency is expressed through moment functions of order $p\geq 3$ and established for a wide class of operators $\varkappa \mathcal{L}$ with a positive-definite correlator $B=B(x))$ of the white noise. In the second half of the paper, the strong intermittency is studied. It relates to the existence of a positive eigenvalue for the lattice Schrödinger type operator with the potential $B$. This operator is associated with the second moment $m_2$. Now $B$ is not necessarily positive-definite, but $\sum B(x)\geq 0$.

Local gaps in three-dimensional periodic media

We consider the propagation of acoustic waves in a medium with a periodic array of small inclusions of arbitrary shape. The inclusion size $a$ is much smaller than the array period. We show that global gaps do not exist if $a$ is small enough. The notion of local gaps which depends on the choice of the wave vector $\bk$ is introduced and studied. We determine analytically the location of local gaps for the Dirichlet and transmission problems.

Propagation and dispersion of Bloch waves in periodic media with soft inclusions

We investigate the behavior of waves in a periodic medium containing small soft inclusions or cavities of arbitrary shape, such that the homogeneous Dirichlet conditions are satisfied at the boundary. The leading terms of Bloch waves, their dispersion relations, and cutoff frequencies are rigorously derived. Our approach reveals the existence of exceptional wave vectors for which Bloch waves are comprised of clusters of perturbed plane waves that propagate in different directions. We demonstrate that for these exceptional wave vectors, no Bloch waves propagate in any one specific direction.

Clusters of Bloch waves in three-dimensional periodic media

We consider acoustic wave propagation through a periodic array of the inclusions of arbitrary shape. The inclusion size is much smaller than the array period while the wavelength is fixed. We derive and rigorously justify the dispersion relation for general frequencies and show that there are exceptional frequencies for which the solution is a cluster of waves propagating in different directions with different frequencies so that the dispersion relation cannot be defined uniquely. Examples are provided for the spherical inclusions.

Slowdown of group velocity in periodic waveguides

We consider the propagation of acoustic, electromagnetic and elastic waves in a one-dimensional periodic two-component material. Accurate asymptotic formulas are provided for the group velocity as a function of the material parameters when the concentration of scatterers is small or the characteristic impedances of the two media differ substantially. In the latter case, it is shown that the minimum group velocity occurs when the volume fractions of the components of the material are equal. In both asymptotic cases we show that the leading terms of the group velocity do not depend on frequency. Thus slowdown is frequency-independent and is not related to the resonance phenomena.

Dispersion of waves in two and three-dimensional periodic media

We consider the propagation of acoustic time-harmonic waves in a homogeneous media containing periodic lattices of spherical or cylindrical inclusions. It is assumed that the wavelength has the order of the periods of the lattice while the radius $a$ of inclusions is small. A new approach is suggested to derive the complete asymptotic expansions of the dispersion relations in two and three-dimensional cases as $a \to 0$ and evaluate explicitly several first terms. Our method is based on the reduction of the original singularly perturbed (by inclusions) problem to the regular one. The Neumann, Dirichlet and transmission boundary conditions are considered. The effective wave speed is obtained as a function of the wave frequency, the filling fraction of the inclusions, and the physical properties of the constituents of the mixture. Dependence of asymptotic formulas obtained in the paper on geometric and material parameters is illustrated by graphs.

Designing lasing and perfectly absorbing potentials

Existence of a spectral singularity (SS) in the spectrum of {a Schrödinger operator with} a non-Hermitian potential requires exact matching of parameters of the potential. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a potential to have a SS at a given wavelength. It is shown that potentials with SSs at prescribed wavelengths can be obtained by a simple and effective procedure. In particular, the developed approach allows one to obtain potentials with several SSs and with SSs of the second order, as well as potentials obeying a given symmetry, say, $\PT-$symmetric potentials. Also, the problem can be solved when it is required to obtain a potential obeying a given symmetry, say, $\PT-$symmetric potential. We illustrate all these opportunities with examples. We also describe splitting of a second-order SSs under change of the potential parameters, and discuss possibilities of experimental observation of SSs of different orders.

Global solution of the initial value problem for the focusing Davey-Stewartson II system

We consider the two dimensional focusing Davey-Stewartson II system and construct the global solution of the Cauchy problem for a dense in $L^2(\mathbb C)$ set of initial data. We do not assume that the initial data is small. So, the solutions may have singularities. We show that the blow-up may occur only on a real analytic variety and the variety is bounded in each strip $t \leq T$.

Dispersive and effective properties of two-dimensional periodic media

We consider transverse propagation of electromagnetic waves through a two-dimensional composite material containing a periodic rectangular array of circular cylinders. Propagation of waves is described by the Helmholtz equation with the continuity conditions the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields on the boundaries of the cylinders. We assume that the dimensionless wave frequency $ν\ll 1$ that allows us to view the governing equation as a perturbation of the Laplace equation. We show that the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues are even analytic functions of the magnitude of the quasimomentum vector and provide a rigorously justified asymptotic expansion the tensor of effective properties. We also determine explicitly a frequency correction term to the tensor of effective properties.

On reconstruction of complex-valued once differentiable conductivities

The classical $\overline \partial$-method has been generalized recently [lnv], [lnv2] to be used in the presence of exceptional points. We apply this generalization to solve Dirac inverse scattering problem with weak assumptions on smoothness of potentials. As a consequence, this provides an effective method of reconstruction of complex-valued one time differentiable conductivities in the inverse impedance tomography problem.

Recovery of $L^p$-potential in the plane

An inverse problem for the two-dimensional Schrodinger equation with $L^p_{com}$-potential, $p>1$, is considered. Using the $\overline{\partial}$-method, the potential is recovered from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of a domain containing the support of the potential. We do not assume that the potential is small or that the Faddeev scattering problem does not have exceptional points. The paper contains a new estimate on the Faddeev Green function that immediately implies the absence of exceptional points near the origin and infinity when $v\in L^p_{com}$.

Uniqueness in potential scattering with reduced near field data

We consider inverse potential scattering problems where the source of the incident waves is located on a smooth closed surface outside of the inhomogeneity of the media. The scattered waves are measured on the same surface at a fixed value of the energy. We show that this data determines the bounded potential uniquely.

Recovery of interior eigenvalues from reduced near field data

We consider inverse obstacle and transmission scattering problems where the source of the incident waves is located on a smooth closed surface that is a boundary of a domain located outside of the obstacle/inhomogeneity of the media. The domain can be arbitrarily small but fixed. The scattered waves are measured on the same surface. An effective procedure is suggested for recovery of interior eigenvalues by these data.

Sharp Weyl Law for Signed Counting Function of Positive Interior Transmission Eigenvalues

We consider the interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem, which arises when scattering by inhomogeneous media is studied. The ITE problem is not self-adjoint. We show that positive ITEs are observable together with plus or minus signs that are defined by the direction of motion of the corresponding eigenvalues of the scattering matrix (when the latter approach {\bf$z=1$)}. We obtain a Weyl type formula for the counting function of positive ITEs, which are taken together with ascribed signs.
