Analytic Torsion on Manifolds with Edges

Let (M,g) be an odd-dimensional incomplete compact Riemannian singular space with a simple edge singularity. We study the analytic torsion on M, and in particular consider how it depends on the metric g. If g is an admissible edge metric, we prove that the torsion zeta function is holomorphic near s = 0, hence the torsion is well-defined, but possibly depends on g. In general dimensions, we prove that the analytic torsion depends only on the asymptotic structure of g near the singular stratum of M; when the dimension of the edge is odd, we prove that the analytic torsion is independent of the choice of admissible edge metric. The main tool is the construction, via the methodology of geometric microlocal analysis, of the heat kernel for the Friedrichs extension of the Hodge Laplacian in all degrees. In this way we obtain detailed asymptotics of this heat kernel and its trace.

Yamabe flow on manifolds with edges

Let (M,g) be a compact oriented Riemannian manifold with an incomplete edge singularity. This article shows that it is possible to evolve g by the Yamabe flow within a class of singular edge metrics. As the main analytic step we establish parabolic Schauder-type estimates for the heat operator on certain Hölder spaces adapted to the singular edge geometry. We apply these estimates to obtain local existence for a variety of quasilinear equations, including the Yamabe flow. This provides a setup for a subsequent discussion of the Yamabe problem using flow techniques in the singular setting.

The exotic heat-trace asymptotics of a regular-singular operator revisited

We discuss the exotic properties of the heat-trace asymptotics for a regular-singular operator with general boundary conditions at the singular end, as observed by Falomir, Muschietti, Pisani and Seeley as well as by Kirsten, Loya and Park. We explain how their results alternatively follow from the general heat kernel construction by Mooers, a natural question that has not been addressed yet, as the latter work did not elaborate explicitly on the singular structure of the heat trace expansion beyond the statement of non-polyhomogeneity of the heat kernel.

Mapping properties of the heat operator on edge manifolds

We consider the heat operator acting on differential forms on spaces with complete and incomplete edge metrics. In the latter case we study the heat operator of the Hodge Laplacian with algebraic boundary conditions at the edge singularity. We establish the mapping properties of the heat operator, recovering and extending the classical results from smooth manifolds and conical spaces. The estimates, together with strong continuity of the heat operator, yield short-time existence of solutions to certain semilinear parabolic equations. Our discussion reviews and generalizes earlier work by Jeffres and Loya.

Elliptic theory of differential edge operators, II: boundary value problems

This is a continuation of the first author's development of the theory of elliptic differential operators with edge degeneracies. That first paper treated basic mapping theory, focusing on semi-Fredholm properties on weighted Sobolev and Hölder spaces and regularity in the form of asymptotic expansions of solutions. The present paper builds on this through the formulation of boundary conditions and the construction of parametrices for the associated boundary problems. As before, the emphasis is on the geometric microlocal structure of the Schwartz kernels of parametrices and generalized inverses.

A new proof of a Bismut-Zhang formula for some class of representations

Bismut and Zhang computed the ratio of the Ray-Singer and the combinatorial torsions corresponding to non-unitary representations of the fundamental group. In this note we show that for representations which belong to a connected component containing a unitary representation the Bismut-Zhang formula follows rather easily from the Cheeger-Mueller theorem, i.e. from the equality of the two torsions on the set of unitary representations. The proof uses the fact that the refined analytic torsion is a holomorphic function on the space of representations.

The Metric Anomaly of Analytic Torsion at the Boundary of an Even Dimensional Cone

The formula for analytic torsion of a cone in even dimensions is comprised of three terms. The first two terms are well understood and given by an algebraic combination of the Betti numbers and the analytic torsion of the cone base. The third "singular" contribution is an intricate spectral invariant of the cone base. We identify the third term as the metric anomaly of the analytic torsion coming from the non-product structure of the cone at its regular boundary. Hereby we filter out the actual contribution of the conical singularity and identify the analytic torsion of an even-dimensional cone purely in terms of the Betti numbers and the analytic torsion of the cone base.

The Metric Anomaly of Analytic Torsion on Manifolds with Conical Singularities

In this paper we study the analytic torsion of an odd-dimensional manifold with isolated conical singularities. First we show that the analytic torsion is invariant under deformations of the metric which are of higher order near the singularities. Then we identify the metric anomaly of analytic torsion for a bounded generalized cone at its regular boundary in terms of spectral information of the cross-section. In view of previous computations of analytic torsion on cones, this leads to a detailed geometric identification of the topological and spectral contributions to analytic torsion, arising from the conical singularity. The contribution exhibits a torsion-like spectral invariant of the cross-section of the cone, which we study under scaling of the metric on the cross-section.

Regular singular Sturm-Liouville operators and their zeta-determinants

We consider Sturm-Liouville operators on the line segment [0, 1] with general regular singular potentials and separated boundary conditions. We establish existence and a formula for the associated zeta-determinant in terms of the Wronski- determinant of a fundamental system of solutions adapted to the boundary conditions. This generalizes the earlier work of the first author, treating general regular singular potentials but only the Dirichlet boundary conditions at the singular end, and the recent results by Kirsten-Loya-Park for general separated boundary conditions but only special regular singular potentials.

Refined Analytic Torsion on Manifolds with Boundary

The refined analytic torsion, defined by M. Braverman and T. Kappeler on closed manifolds, can be viewed as a refinement of the Ray-Singer torsion, since it is a canonical choice of an element with Ray-Singer norm one, in case of unitary representations. The complex phase of the refinement is given by the rho-invariant of the odd-signature operator. Unfortunately there seems to be no canonical way to extend the construction of Braverman and Kappeler to compact manifolds with boundary. In particular a gluing formula seems to be out of reach. We propose a different refinement of analytic torsion, similar to Braverman and Kappeler, which does apply to compact manifolds with and without boundary. In a subsequent publication we establish a gluing formula for our construction, which in fact can also be viewed as a gluing law for the original definition of refined analytic torsion by Braverman and Kappeler.

Gluing Formula for Refined Analytic Torsion

In the previous article "Refined Analytic Torsion on Manifolds with Boundary" we have presented a construction of refined analytic torsion in the spirit of Braverman and Kappeler, which does apply to compact manifolds with and without boundary. We now derive a gluing formula for our construction, which can be viewed as a gluing law for the original definition of refined analytic torsion by Braverman and Kappeler. A gluing formula allows to compute the torsion invariant by cutting the manifold into elementary pieces and performing computations on each component. Certainly, the general fact of existence of such gluing formulas is remarkable from the analytic point of view, since the secondary spectral invariants are uppermost non-local.

Analytic Torsion of a Bounded Generalized Cone

Torsion invariants for manifolds which are not simply connected were introduced by K. Reidemeister and generalized to higher dimensions by W. Franz. The Reidemeister torsion, was the first invariant of manifolds which was not a homotopy invariant. The analytic counterpart of the combinatorial Reidemeister torsion was introduced by D. B. Ray and I. M. Singer in form of a weighted product of zeta-regularized determinants of Laplace operators on differential forms. The celebrated Cheeger-Mueller Theorem, established independently by J. Cheeger and W. Mueller, proved equality between the analytic Ray-Singer torsion and the combinatorial Reidemeister torsion for any smooth closed manifold with an orthogonal representation of its fundamental group. Motivated by the vision of a Cheeger-Mueller type result on manifolds with conical singularities, we compute the analytic torsion of a bounded generalized cone by generalizing the computational methods of M. Spreafico and using the symmetry of the de Rham complex, as established by M. Lesch.

Functional Determinants for Regular-Singular Laplace-type Operators

We discuss a specific class of regular-singular Laplace-type operators with matrix coefficients. Their zeta determinants were studied by K. Kirsten, P. Loya and J. Park on the basis of the Contour integral method, with general boundary conditions at the singularity and Dirichlet boundary conditions at the regular boundary. We complete the arguments of Kirsten, Loya and Park by explicitly verifying that the Contour integral method indeed applies in the regular-singular setup. Further we extend the zeta determinant computations to generalized Neumann boundary conditions at the regular boundary and apply our results to Laplacians on a bounded generalized cone with relative ideal boundary conditions.
