Complexity of Lasso with Normalized Data, Geometry and Combinatorics

We observe and prove that the complexity of lasso for normalized data is smaller than for nonnormalized ones by relating this question to extremal combinatorics and algebraic graph theory. We employ a geometric approach to the lasso as a study of the tangency of the level sets of the least square objective function with the polyhedral boundary sets $B(t)$ of the parameters in $\mathbb R^p$ with the $\ell_1$ norm equal to $t$. We geometrically derive closed exact formulae for the solution of the lasso under the full rank assumption. We establish important general properties of the solutions of the lasso, which are known to be represented as a simple polygonal chain in $\mathbb{R}^p$. Starting from $p=2$ and $p=3$, we show a striking difference in the maximal number of $p$-dimensional orthants a polygonal chain of a lasso solution can intersect in the case of normalized data vs. nonnormalized data. We prove that in the normalized case, the number $h_{p,2}$ is a general upper bound for the number of segments of a lasso solution intersecting a $p$-dimensional orthant, where $h_{p,r}$ is the maximal number of binary words of length $p$ such that every two words match at least at $r$ spots, $r\le p$. We prove, using spectral graph theory, that $h_{p,2}=2^{p-1}-\binom{p}{p/2}/2$ for $p$ even and $h_{p,2}=2^{p-1}-\binom{p-1}{(p-1)/2}$ for $p$ odd. It was known that for general data the sharp estimate for that number is $2^{p-1}$, which we identify with $h_{p,1}$. We also find an upper bound for the total number of segments of a lasso solution with normalized data in dimension $p$, e.g. $\hat N(2\ell)=\frac{3^{2\ell}+5}{2} - 4\ell\, {}_3F_2\!\left( \begin{matrix} \frac{1}{2},\;1-\ell,\;\frac{1}{2}-\ell\\[1mm] \frac{3}{2},\;1 \end{matrix} ;4 \right)$, that is significantly less than $(3^p+1)/2$, a well-known sharp upper bound for the nonnormalized case.

From bungee to $C^1$ and $C^0$ Hamiltonian systems and their integrability and nonintegrability

We consider natural Hamiltonian systems with potentials that are $C^0$ or $C^1$ on a hypersurface and $C^{\infty}$-smooth in the complement and introduce and study corresponding notions of their integrabilty and non-integrability. As a motivating example, we derive and analyze models of bungee jumping. We provide prototype examples of the Liuoville-Arnol'd theorem for $C^0$ and $C^1$ Hamiltonians.

Spherical and Planar Ball Bearings -- a Study of Integrable Cases

We consider the nonholonomic systems of $n$ homogeneous balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$ with the same radius $r$ that are rolling without slipping about a fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ with center $O$ and radius $R$. In addition, it is assumed that a dynamically nonsymmetric sphere $\mathbf S$ with the center that coincides with the center $O$ of the fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ rolls without slipping in contact to the moving balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$. The problem is considered in four different configurations. We derive the equations of motion and prove that these systems possess an invariant measure. As the main result, for $n=1$ we found two cases that are integrable in quadratures according to the Euler-Jacobi theorem. The obtained integrable nonholonomic models are natural extensions of the well-known Chaplygin ball integrable problems. Further, we explicitly integrate the planar problem consisting of $n$ homogeneous balls of the same radius, but with different masses, that roll without slipping over a fixed plane $Σ_0$ with a plane $Σ$ that moves without slipping over these balls.

Orthogonal and Linear Regressions and Pencils of Confocal Quadrics

This paper enhances and develops bridges between statistics, mechanics, and geometry. For a given system of points in $\mathbb R^k$ representing a sample of full rank, we construct an explicit pencil of confocal quadrics with the following properties: (i) All the hyperplanes for which the hyperplanar moments of inertia for the given system of points are equal, are tangent to the same quadrics from the pencil of quadrics. As an application, we develop regularization procedures for the orthogonal least square method, analogues of lasso and ridge methods from linear regression. (ii) For any given point $P$ among all the hyperplanes that contain it, the best fit is the tangent hyperplane to the quadric from the confocal pencil corresponding to the maximal Jacobi coordinate of the point $P$; the worst fit among the hyperplanes containing $P$ is the tangent hyperplane to the ellipsoid from the confocal pencil that contains $P$. The confocal pencil of quadrics provides a universal tool to solve the restricted principal component analysis restricted at any given point. Both results (i) and (ii) can be seen as generalizations of the classical result of Pearson on orthogonal regression. They have natural and important applications in the statistics of the errors-in-variables models (EIV). For the classical linear regressions we provide a geometric characterization of hyperplanes of least squares in a given direction among all hyperplanes which contain a given point. The obtained results have applications in restricted regressions, both ordinary and orthogonal ones. For the latter, a new formula for test statistic is derived. The developed methods and results are illustrated in natural statistics examples.

The rigid body dynamics: classical and algebro-geometric integration

The basic notion for a motion of a heavy rigid body fixed at a point in three-dimensional space as well as its higher-dimensional generalizations are presented. On a basis of Lax representation, the algebro-geometric integration procedure for one of the classical cases of motion of three-dimensional rigid body - the Hess-Appel'rot system is given. The classical integration in Hess coordinates is presented also. For higher-dimensional generalizations, the special attention is paid in dimension four. The L-A pairs and the classical integration procedures for completely integrable four-dimensional rigid body so called the Lagrange bitop as well as for four-dimensional generalization of Hess-Appel'rot system are given. An $n$-dimensional generalization of the Hess-Appel'rot system is also presented and its Lax representation is given. Starting from another Lax representation for the Hess-Appel'rot system, a family of dynamical systems on $e(3)$ is constructed. For five cases from the family, the classical and algebro-geometric integration procedures are presented. The four-dimensional generalizations for the Kirchhoff and the Chaplygin cases of motion of rigid body in ideal fluid are defined. The results presented in the paper are part of results obtained in last decade.
