Thermodynamics of Lorentzian Taub-NUT spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity

We study the thermodynamics of Lorentzian Taub--NUT spacetimes in Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet AdS gravity in arbitrary even dimensions, constructed as $U(1)$ fibrations over Einstein--Kähler base manifolds. We compute the temperature from the surface gravity and the energy as the conserved charge associated with the stationary Killing vector using the off-shell Abbott--Deser--Tekin formalism. Within the same framework, we obtain the entropy as a horizon Noether charge. The result agrees with the Iyer--Wald formula and includes a Gauss--Bonnet correction to the Bekenstein--Hawking area law. Retaining the Misner strings whenever present, we formulate a first law of full cohomogeneity in which the NUT parameter varies independently of the horizon radius. This requires an additional thermodynamic charge and its conjugate potential, which we determine explicitly. We also briefly discuss the static limit.

Hadronic lensing

We introduce an analytic approach to study gravitational lensing in the presence of a distribution of hadrons. The situation is analogous to the propagation of photons in a medium with a nontrivial Cooper-pair condensate, where the photon acquires an effective mass term that may depend on the coordinates if the condensate is not homogeneous. As a result, photons generally do not follow null geodesics in the hadronic medium. In this setup, hadrons are described by the nonlinear sigma model minimally coupled to Maxwell theory. The modified Raychaudhuri equation, including hadronic corrections, is derived, along with the integral curves of probe photons in the eikonal approximation. These results are consistent with the theory of gravitational lensing in plasma media, with the advantage that transport properties, such as the refractive index, can be expressed analytically in terms of the hadronic density without assuming a phenomenological modeling thereof. As an example, we study the hadronic lensing produced by an analytic black hole sourced by superfluid pionic vortices, and we obtain the hadronic correction to the deflection angle in the weak-field limit.

(Super-)renormalizable hairy meronic black holes

We construct an analytical black hole solution in the Einstein-Maxwell-Yang-Mills theory with a conformally coupled scalar field in four dimensions, which generalizes the charged Martínez-Troncoso-Zanelli (MTZ) black hole in the presence of self-gravitating non-Abelian gauge fields. The internal gauge group is determined by the horizon curvature, becoming $SU(N)$ in the case of positive curvature and $SU(N-1,1)$ when the curvature is negative. Moreover, this solution is employed as a conformal seed to obtain new meronic spacetimes dressed with all (super-)renormalizable contributions of the scalar field, which provides the generalization of the Anabalón-Cisterna (AC) solution when self-gravitating non-Abelian gauge fields are included. Finally, we consider the non-Noetherian extension of the conformal scalar fields, which still yields a second-order conformally invariant scalar equation, even though the action is not. In that case, we show that static black hole solutions can also be charged with Yang-Mills fields.

Universality of merons in non-Abelian gauge theories

Within the wide variety of topological solitons supported by Yang--Mills theory, merons occupy a particularly distinguished role. Despite their simplicity, they represent genuinely non-Abelian configurations that can be regarded as the fundamental building blocks of instantons, and they provide a qualitatively accurate picture of confinement. In this work, we show that such configurations are, in fact, supported by a broad class of non-Abelian gauge theories beyond Yang--Mills, provided that suitable physical conditions are satisfied, thereby rendering them universal. Taking into account their gravitational backreaction, we further demonstrate that both black holes and Euclidean wormholes sourced by merons admit natural extensions within this generalized framework, which regularizes the singular behavior they exhibit in constant--curvature backgrounds. As a byproduct, we construct a regular black hole solution supported by genuinely non-Abelian gauge fields, based on a non-Abelian generalization of the Ayón--Beato--García nonlinear electrodynamics. As a consequence of this universality, physical effects intrinsic to merons are likewise expected to be universal. A notable example is the spin from isospin effect, whereby bosonic excitations charged under the gauge group can effectively behave as fermionic degrees of freedom.

Nonconformally Ricci-flat instantons in Conformal Gravity with and without nonlinear matter fields

In this work, we study nonconformally Ricci-flat gravitational instantons in four-dimensional Conformal Gravity, both in vacuum and in the presence of nonlinear conformal matter. First, the one-parameter extension of the Kerr-NUT-AdS metric is analyzed. We obtain their conserved charges by using the Noether-Wald formalism. It turns out that they receive corrections from the linear modes present in Conformal Gravity, which are properly identified. Then, we perform the analytic continuation into the Euclidean section and find the curve in parameter space along which this solution becomes regular and globally (anti)self-dual. Using the Dunajski-Tod theorem, we show that the self-dual metric is not conformally Ricci-flat. Then, the backreaction of nonlinear conformal matter is considered. In particular, we find new gravitational instantons in the presence of conformally coupled scalar fields and ModMax electrodynamics. We compute the partition function and conserved charges, which turn out to be finite by virtue of the conformal invariance of the theory. As a byproduct, we also obtain a generalization of the Riegert metric dressed with nonlinear conformal matter as a particular limit of these instantons. For all cases, we analyze the global properties, the curve in parameter space where the solutions are (anti)-self-dual, and the on-shell Euclidean action, among other features.

Self-dual instantons and gravitating dyons in non-Abelian ModMax theory

Motivated by the recent interest in conformal and duality invariant nonlinear electrodynamics, we study the non-Abelian extension of ModMax electrodynamics. The theory is parameterized by a single dimensionless constant, and it is continuously connected to Yang-Mills theory in its vanishing limit. We show that the theory admits (anti-)self-dual instantons, despite the additional nonlinearities that characterize the non-Abelian ModMax theory. For $SU(2)$, we construct the generalization of the BPST instanton and extend this solution to Euclidean de Sitter and anti-de Sitter backgrounds. In the latter case, the Chern-Pontryagin index depends on the instanton size since the configuration is not a pure gauge at infinity; a property already pointed out in Yang-Mills on negative-curvature backgrounds by Callan and Wilczek. We compute the contribution of the latter to the spectrum of the Dirac operator at the boundary, which is crucial for determining the non-local contributions to the Dirac index. Then, we show that the ansatz constructed with 't Hooft symbols accommodates multi-instantons in the non-Abelian ModMax theory. The system of (anti-)self-dual equations reduces to a single nonlinear equation, which can be perturbatively solved order by order in the parameter that controls the nonlinearity. Following such a strategy, we provide a formal solution for the $N$-instanton configuration to first order in the expansion. Then, we couple non-Abelian ModMax theory to gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field and construct new gravitating solutions that describe Euclidean wormholes and other smooth configurations with secondary hair.

Inhomogeneous metrics on complex bundles in Lovelock gravity

We consider Lovelock gravity in arbitrary, even dimensions. We find a large class of new gravitational instantons by considering extended nontrivial circle bundles over Kähler manifolds. Concretely, we generalize the Page-Pope metric in the presence of higher-curvature corrections of the Lovelock class. A subset of these spaces admits analytic continuation into the Lorentzian sector, producing new stationary solutions in Lovelock gravity. The geometries are fully determined by a single algebraic equation. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for Lovelock-constant Kähler manifolds to exist in Lovelock gravity. Finally, we find a wide class of Lovelock-Maxwell solutions beyond staticity, allowing us to obtain the electrovacuum extension of these instantons.

Euclidean AdS wormholes and gravitational instantons in the Einstein-Skyrme theory

Euclidean AdS wormholes provide a natural setup for studying the AdS/CFT correspondence with multiple boundaries. However, from a bottom-up perspective, they cannot be embedded in the four-dimensional Einstein-AdS-Maxwell theory if these boundaries have positive curvature. Nevertheless, Maldacena and Maoz showed that this obstruction could be circumvented by introducing merons in the four-dimensional Einstein-AdS-Yang-Mills theory. In this work, we show that Euclidean-AdS wormholes also exist in the four-dimensional Einstein-AdS-Skyrme theory, whose matter sector possesses a nontrivial baryonic charge. We compute its free energy and show that it does not depend on the integration constants whatsoever, resembling topological solitons. Additionally, we obtain its holographic stress tensor and show that it vanishes, allowing us to interpret this configuration as a holographic Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) state. Other topologically nontrivial ground states in Einstein-Skyrme theory are found, such as gravitational instantons, representing the homotopically inequivalent vacua of the theory. We find that they develop Hawking-Page phase transitions above a critical temperature. Some of these solutions are periodic in Euclidean time, representing the gravitational analog of calorons in Yang-Mills theory.
