Energy levels of the second-harmonic Hamiltonian at large photon numbers

We study the energy spectrum of the degenerate $χ^{(2)}$ Hamiltonian describing second-harmonic generation and parametric down-conversion at large total excitation numbers. Owing to the conservation of the total excitation number, the spectral problem reduces to the diagonalization of finite-dimensional tridiagonal matrices. Following the approach of Alvarez and Alvarez-Estrada, we map this problem onto an effective one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a double-well potential. We then derive an implicit quantization condition for the energy levels near the top of the potential barrier and obtain two explicit asymptotic formulas applicable in complementary spectral regions. The ranges of applicability of the resulting formulas are established, and their accuracy is compared with exact matrix diagonalization and with the conventional JWKB approximation. The proposed approach provides an accurate analytical description of the energy levels near the center of the spectrum, where the conventional approximation loses accuracy.

Discrete phase symmetry of stationary states in bichromatically pumped Kerr microresonators

Bichromatically pumped Kerr microresonators exhibit phase bistability and multistability arising from four-wave mixing between pump and generated modes. Here we analyze the symmetry structure of stationary solutions in the coupled-mode description of such systems. We show that the two-pump coupled-mode equations are a particular case of a more general model with pumps placed at equally spaced modes. For this model, any stationary solution generates a finite family of stationary solutions through a discrete phase transformation. This transformation leaves the equations invariant and preserves the stability type of the corresponding stationary states. As a consequence, the possible stationary values of each individual mode form a regular polygon in the complex plane. The number of vertices is determined by the order of the mode index $μ$ in the group $\mathbb{Z}_n$, where $n$ is the separation between the pumped modes. Thus, the phase multistability structure depends not only on nonlinear dynamics but also on the arithmetic relation between the mode index and the pump separation. These results provide a simple symmetry-based explanation for the discrete phase structure observed in multimode Kerr resonators under bichromatic pumping.

Optimal squeezing to minimize vulnerability to losses

Non-Gaussian states, described by Wigner quasi-probability distribution taking negative values, are of great interest for various applications of quantum physics. It is known however that they are highly vulnerable to dissipation. In this paper, we show that the robustness of the non-Gaussian states to losses can be significantly improved by pre-squeezing of the quantum state, and find the optimal parameters of the squeezing. As specific examples, we consider such well-known quantum states as Schrodinger cat, Fock , and ``banana'' ones.

Effective algorithms for calculation of quasiprobability distributions of bright "banana'' states

Non-Gaussian quantum states, described by negative valued Wigner functions, are important both for fundamental tests of quantum physics and for emerging quantum information technologies. One of the promising ways of generation of the non-Gaussian states is the use of the cubic (Kerr) optical non-linearity, which produces the characteristic banana-like shape of the resulting quantum states. However, the Kerr effect in highly transparent optical materials is weak. Therefore, big number of the photons in the optical mode ($n\gtrsim10^6$) is necessary to generate an observable non-Gaussianity. In this case, the direct approach to calculation of the Wigner function becomes extremely computationally expensive. In this work, we develop quick algorithms for computing the Husimi and Wigner quasiprobability functions of these non-Gaussin states by means of the Kerr nonlinearity. This algorithm can be used for any realistic values of the photons number and the non-linearity.
