The (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy and nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the Doubrov-Ferapontov modified heavenly equation

According to the classification of integrable complex Monge-Ampere equations by Doubrov and Ferapontov, the modified heavenly equation is a typical (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless and canonical integrable equation. In this paper we use the eigenfunctions of the Doubrov-Ferapontov modified heavenly equation to obtain a related hierarchy. Next we construct the Lax-Sato equations with Hamiltonian vector fields and Zakharov-Shabat type equations which are equivalent to the hierarchy. The nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem is also applied to study the solution of Doubrov-Ferapontov modified heavenly equation.

Controllable Preference Optimization: Toward Controllable Multi-Objective Alignment

Alignment in artificial intelligence pursues the consistency between model responses and human preferences as well as values. In practice, the multifaceted nature of human preferences inadvertently introduces what is known as the "alignment tax" -a compromise where enhancements in alignment within one objective (e.g.,harmlessness) can diminish performance in others (e.g.,helpfulness). However, existing alignment techniques are mostly unidirectional, leading to suboptimal trade-offs and poor flexibility over various objectives. To navigate this challenge, we argue the prominence of grounding LLMs with evident preferences. We introduce controllable preference optimization (CPO), which explicitly specifies preference scores for different objectives, thereby guiding the model to generate responses that meet the requirements. Our experimental analysis reveals that the aligned models can provide responses that match various preferences among the "3H" (helpfulness, honesty, harmlessness) desiderata. Furthermore, by introducing diverse data and alignment goals, we surpass baseline methods in aligning with single objectives, hence mitigating the impact of the alignment tax and achieving improvements in multi-objective alignment.

Multi-Style Facial Sketch Synthesis through Masked Generative Modeling

The facial sketch synthesis (FSS) model, capable of generating sketch portraits from given facial photographs, holds profound implications across multiple domains, encompassing cross-modal face recognition, entertainment, art, media, among others. However, the production of high-quality sketches remains a formidable task, primarily due to the challenges and flaws associated with three key factors: (1) the scarcity of artist-drawn data, (2) the constraints imposed by limited style types, and (3) the deficiencies of processing input information in existing models. To address these difficulties, we propose a lightweight end-to-end synthesis model that efficiently converts images to corresponding multi-stylized sketches, obviating the necessity for any supplementary inputs (\eg, 3D geometry). In this study, we overcome the issue of data insufficiency by incorporating semi-supervised learning into the training process. Additionally, we employ a feature extraction module and style embeddings to proficiently steer the generative transformer during the iterative prediction of masked image tokens, thus achieving a continuous stylized output that retains facial features accurately in sketches. The extensive experiments demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms previous algorithms across multiple benchmarks, exhibiting a discernible disparity.

Large Language Models as Evaluators for Recommendation Explanations

The explainability of recommender systems has attracted significant attention in academia and industry. Many efforts have been made for explainable recommendations, yet evaluating the quality of the explanations remains a challenging and unresolved issue. In recent years, leveraging LLMs as evaluators presents a promising avenue in Natural Language Processing tasks (e.g., sentiment classification, information extraction), as they perform strong capabilities in instruction following and common-sense reasoning. However, evaluating recommendation explanatory texts is different from these NLG tasks, as its criteria are related to human perceptions and are usually subjective. In this paper, we investigate whether LLMs can serve as evaluators of recommendation explanations. To answer the question, we utilize real user feedback on explanations given from previous work and additionally collect third-party annotations and LLM evaluations. We design and apply a 3-level meta evaluation strategy to measure the correlation between evaluator labels and the ground truth provided by users. Our experiments reveal that LLMs, such as GPT4, can provide comparable evaluations with appropriate prompts and settings. We also provide further insights into combining human labels with the LLM evaluation process and utilizing ensembles of multiple heterogeneous LLM evaluators to enhance the accuracy and stability of evaluations. Our study verifies that utilizing LLMs as evaluators can be an accurate, reproducible and cost-effective solution for evaluating recommendation explanation texts. Oxygen vacancies modulated VO2 for neurons and Spiking Neural Network construction

Artificial neuronal devices are the basic building blocks for neuromorphic computing systems, which have been motivated by realistic brain emulation. Aiming for these applications, various device concepts have been proposed to mimic the neuronal dynamics and functions. While till now, the artificial neuron devices with high efficiency, high stability and low power consumption are still far from practical application. Due to the special insulator-metal phase transition, Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) has been considered as an idea candidate for neuronal device fabrication. However, its intrinsic insulating state requires the VO2 neuronal device to be driven under large bias voltage, resulting in high power consumption and low frequency. Thus in the current study, we have addressed this challenge by preparing oxygen vacancies modulated VO2 film(VO2-x) and fabricating the VO2-x neuronal devices for Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) construction. Results indicate the neuron devices can be operated under lower voltage with improved processing speed. The proposed VO2-x based back-propagation SNNs (BP-SNNs) system, trained with the MNIST dataset, demonstrates excellent accuracy in image recognition. Our study not only demonstrates the VO2-x based neurons and SNN system for practical application, but also offers an effective way to optimize the future neuromorphic computing systems by defect engineering strategy.

FreeFlow: A Comprehensive Understanding on Diffusion Probabilistic Models via Optimal Transport

The blooming diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have garnered significant interest due to their impressive performance and the elegant inspiration they draw from physics. While earlier DPMs relied upon the Markovian assumption, recent methods based on differential equations have been rapidly applied to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of these models. However, a theoretical interpretation encapsulating these diverse algorithms is insufficient yet pressingly required to guide further development of DPMs. In response to this need, we present FreeFlow, a framework that provides a thorough explanation of the diffusion formula as time-dependent optimal transport, where the evolutionary pattern of probability density is given by the gradient flows of a functional defined in Wasserstein space. Crucially, our framework necessitates a unified description that not only clarifies the subtle mechanism of DPMs but also indicates the roots of some defects through creative involvement of Lagrangian and Eulerian views to understand the evolution of probability flow. We particularly demonstrate that the core equation of FreeFlow condenses all stochastic and deterministic DPMs into a single case, showcasing the expansibility of our method. Furthermore, the Riemannian geometry employed in our work has the potential to bridge broader subjects in mathematics, which enable the involvement of more profound tools for the establishment of more outstanding and generalized models in the future.

DiFace: Cross-Modal Face Recognition through Controlled Diffusion

Diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have exhibited exceptional proficiency in generating visual media of outstanding quality and realism. Nonetheless, their potential in non-generative domains, such as face recognition, has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, despite the extensive development of multi-modal face recognition methods, their emphasis has predominantly centered on visual modalities. In this context, face recognition through textual description presents a unique and promising solution that not only transcends the limitations from application scenarios but also expands the potential for research in the field of cross-modal face recognition. It is regrettable that this avenue remains unexplored and underutilized, a consequence from the challenges mainly associated with three aspects: 1) the intrinsic imprecision of verbal descriptions; 2) the significant gaps between texts and images; and 3) the immense hurdle posed by insufficient databases. To tackle this problem, we present DiFace, a solution that effectively achieves face recognition via text through a controllable diffusion process, by establishing its theoretical connection with probability transport. Our approach not only unleashes the potential of DPMs across a broader spectrum of tasks but also achieves, to the best of our knowledge, a significant accuracy in text-to-image face recognition for the first time, as demonstrated by our experiments on verification and identification.

Generative Flow Network for Listwise Recommendation

Personalized recommender systems fulfill the daily demands of customers and boost online businesses. The goal is to learn a policy that can generate a list of items that matches the user's demand or interest. While most existing methods learn a pointwise scoring model that predicts the ranking score of each individual item, recent research shows that the listwise approach can further improve the recommendation quality by modeling the intra-list correlations of items that are exposed together. This has motivated the recent list reranking and generative recommendation approaches that optimize the overall utility of the entire list. However, it is challenging to explore the combinatorial space of list actions and existing methods that use cross-entropy loss may suffer from low diversity issues. In this work, we aim to learn a policy that can generate sufficiently diverse item lists for users while maintaining high recommendation quality. The proposed solution, GFN4Rec, is a generative method that takes the insight of the flow network to ensure the alignment between list generation probability and its reward. The key advantages of our solution are the log scale reward matching loss that intrinsically improves the generation diversity and the autoregressive item selection model that captures the item mutual influences while capturing future reward of the list. As validation of our method's effectiveness and its superior diversity during active exploration, we conduct experiments on simulated online environments as well as an offline evaluation framework for two real-world datasets.

Whats special about Y6; the working mechanism of neat Y6 organic solar cell

Non-fullerene acceptors (NFA) have delivered advance in bulk heterojunction organic solar cell efficiencies, with the significant milestone of 20% now in sight. However, these materials challenge the accepted wisdom of how organic solar cells work. In this work we present neat Y6 device with efficiency above 4.5%. We thoroughly investigate mechanisms of charge generation and recombination as well as transport in order to understand what is special about Y6. Our data suggest Y6 generates bulk free charges, with ambipolar mobility, which can be extracted in the presence of transport layers

Tests for ultrahigh-dimensional partially linear regression models

In this paper, we consider tests for ultrahigh-dimensional partially linear regression models. The presence of ultrahigh-dimensional nuisance covariates and unknown nuisance function makes the inference problem very challenging. We adopt machine learning methods to estimate the unknown nuisance function and introduce quadratic-form test statistics. Interestingly, though the machine learning methods can be very complex, under suitable conditions, we establish the asymptotic normality of our introduced test statistics under the null hypothesis and local alternative hypotheses. We further propose a power-enhanced procedure to improve the test statistics' performance. Two thresholding determination methods are provided for the power-enhanced procedure. We show that the power-enhanced procedure is powerful to detect signals under either sparse or dense alternatives and it can still control the type-I error asymptotically under the null hypothesis. Numerical studies are carried out to illustrate the empirical performance of our introduced procedures.

Anticorrelated Photoluminescence and Free Charge Generation Proves Field-Assisted Exciton Dissociation in Low-Offset PM6:Y5 Organic Solar Cells

Understanding the origin of inefficient photocurrent generation in organic solar cells with low energy offset remains key to realizing high performance donor-acceptor systems. Here, we probe the origin of field-dependent free charge generation and photoluminescence in non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) based organic solar cells using the polymer PM6 and NFA Y5 - a non-halogenated sibling to Y6, with a smaller energetic offset to PM6. By performing time-delayed collection field (TDCF) measurements on a variety of samples with different electron transport layers and active layer thickness, we show that the fill factor and photocurrent are limited by field-dependent free charge generation in the bulk of the blend. We also introduce a new method of TDCF called m-TDCF to prove the absence of artefacts from non-geminate recombination of photogenerated- and dark charge carriers near the electrodes. We then correlate free charge generation with steady state photoluminescence intensity, and find perfect anticorrelation between these two properties. Through this, we conclude that photocurrent generation in this low offset system is entirely controlled by the field dependent exciton dissociation into charge transfer states.

Semisimplicity of affine cellular algebras

In this note, we prove that an affine cellular algebra $A$ is semisimple if and only if the scheme associated to $A$ is reduced and 0-dimensional, and the bilinear forms with respect to all layers of $A$ are isomorphisms. Moreover, if the ground ring is a perfect field, then $A$ is semisimple if and only if it is separable. We also give a sufficient condition for an affine cellular algebra being Jacobson semisimple.

Exploration and Regularization of the Latent Action Space in Recommendation

In recommender systems, reinforcement learning solutions have effectively boosted recommendation performance because of their ability to capture long-term user-system interaction. However, the action space of the recommendation policy is a list of items, which could be extremely large with a dynamic candidate item pool. To overcome this challenge, we propose a hyper-actor and critic learning framework where the policy decomposes the item list generation process into a hyper-action inference step and an effect-action selection step. The first step maps the given state space into a vectorized hyper-action space, and the second step selects the item list based on the hyper-action. In order to regulate the discrepancy between the two action spaces, we design an alignment module along with a kernel mapping function for items to ensure inference accuracy and include a supervision module to stabilize the learning process. We build simulated environments on public datasets and empirically show that our framework is superior in recommendation compared to standard RL baselines.

Self-adjusting optimization algorithm for solving the setunion knapsack problem

The set-union knapsack problem (SUKP) is a constrained composed optimization problem. It is more difficulty for solving because values and weights depend on items and elements respectively. In this paper, we present two self-adjusting optimization algorithms for approximating SUKP from items and elements perspective respectively. By analyzing the dynamic characters in the SUKP, we design two types of self-adjusting repair and optimization operators that are based on the different loading process. We use the novel teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm (TLBO) to design a general discrete framework (DTLBO) suitable for these two types of operators. In addition, we introduce elite opposite search and natural selection mechanism into DTLBO to furtherly improve the performance of the algorithm from the perspective of population. Finally, we performed experimental comparisons on benchmark sets to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show that the item-based self-adjusting optimization algorithm I-DTLBO is outstanding, and the algorithm is superior to the other swarm intelligence methods for solving SUKP. IDTLBO algorithm reaches the upper boundary of the current swarm intelligence algorithms for solving SUKP in 10 instances, and gotten new upper boundary in 15 instances. The algorithm E-DTLBO based on element loading only perform slightly better on small and middle data sets, but worse on large-scale instances. It shows that element-based design is not suitable for solving SUKP.

APAN: Asynchronous Propagation Attention Network for Real-time Temporal Graph Embedding

Limited by the time complexity of querying k-hop neighbors in a graph database, most graph algorithms cannot be deployed online and execute millisecond-level inference. This problem dramatically limits the potential of applying graph algorithms in certain areas, such as financial fraud detection. Therefore, we propose Asynchronous Propagation Attention Network, an asynchronous continuous time dynamic graph algorithm for real-time temporal graph embedding. Traditional graph models usually execute two serial operations: first graph computation and then model inference. We decouple model inference and graph computation step so that the heavy graph query operations will not damage the speed of model inference. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve competitive performance and 8.7 times inference speed improvement in the meantime.

A triple-mode mid-infrared modulator for all-surface radiative thermal management

Thermal management is ubiquitous in the modern world and indispensable for a sustainable future. Radiative heat management provides unique advantages because the heat transfer can be controlled by the surface. However, different surface emissivities require different tuning strategies. Here, we demonstrate a triple-mode mid-infrared modulator that can switch between passive heating and cooling suitable for all types of object surface emissivities. The device is composed of a surface-textured infrared-semi-transparent elastomer coated with a metallic back reflector, which is biaxially strained to sequentially achieve three fundamental modes: emission, reflection, and transmission. By analyzing and optimizing the coupling between optical and mechanical properties, we achieve a performance of emittance contrast = 0.58, transmittance contrast = 0.49, and reflectance contrast = 0.39. The device can provide a new design paradigm of radiation heat regulation to develop the next generation wearable devices, robotics, and camouflage technology.
