HoSIM: Higher-order Structural Importance based Method for Multiple Local Community Detection

Local community detection has attracted much research attention recently, and many methods have been proposed for the single local community detection that finds a community containing the given set of query nodes. However, nodes may belong to several communities in the network, and detecting all the communities for the query node set, termed as the multiple local community detection (MLCD), is more important as it could uncover more potential information. MLCD is also more challenging because when a query node belongs to multiple communities, it always locates in the complicated overlapping region and the marginal region of communities. Accordingly, detecting multiple communities for such nodes by applying seed expansion methods is insufficient. In this work, we address the MLCD based on higher-order structural importance (HoSI). First, to effectively estimate the influence of higher-order structures, we propose a new variant of random walk called Active Random Walk to measure the HoSI score between nodes. Then, we propose two new metrics to evaluate the HoSI score of a subgraph to a node and the HoSI score of a node, respectively. Based on the proposed metrics, we present a novel algorithm called HoSIM to detect multiple local communities for a single query node. HoSIM enforces a three-stage processing, namely subgraph sampling, core member identification, and local community detection. The key idea is utilizing HoSI to find and identify the core members of communities relevant to the query node and optimize the generated communities. Extensive experiments illustrate the effectiveness of HoSIM.

Center-of-Mass-based Robust Grasp Pose Adaptation Using RGBD Camera and Force/Torque Sensing

Object dropping may occur when the robotic arm grasps objects with uneven mass distribution due to additional moments generated by objects' gravity. To solve this problem, we present a novel work that does not require extra wrist and tactile sensors and large amounts of experiments for learning. First, we obtain the center-of-mass position of the rod object using the widely fixed joint torque sensors on the robot arm and RGBD camera. Further, we give the strategy of grasping to improve grasp stability. Simulation experiments are performed in "Mujoco". Results demonstrate that our work is effective in enhancing grasping robustness.

Link Prediction and Unlink Prediction on Dynamic Networks

Link prediction on dynamic networks has been extensively studied and widely applied in various applications. However, temporal unlink prediction, which also plays an important role in the evolution of social networks, has not been paid much attention. Accurately predicting the links and unlinks on the future network greatly contributes to the network analysis that uncovers more latent relations between nodes. In this work, we assume that there are two kinds of relations between nodes, namely long-term relation and short-term relation, and we propose an effective algorithm called LULS for temporal link prediction and unlink prediction based on such relations. Specifically, for each snapshot of a dynamic network, LULS first collects higher-order structure as two topological matrices by applying short random walks. Then, LULS initializes and optimizes a global matrix and a sequence of temporary matrices for all the snapshots by using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) based on the topological matrices, where the global matrix denotes long-term relation and the temporary matrices represent short-term relations of snapshots. Finally, LULS calculates the similarity matrix of the future snapshot and predicts the links and unlinks for the future network. Additionally, we further improve the prediction results by using graph regularization constraints to enhance the global matrix, resulting that the global matrix contains a wealth of topological information and temporal information. The conducted experiments on real-world networks illustrate that LULS outperforms other baselines for both link prediction and unlink prediction tasks.

Making Adversarial Examples More Transferable and Indistinguishable

Fast gradient sign attack series are popular methods that are used to generate adversarial examples. However, most of the approaches based on fast gradient sign attack series cannot balance the indistinguishability and transferability due to the limitations of the basic sign structure. To address this problem, we propose a method, called Adam Iterative Fast Gradient Tanh Method (AI-FGTM), to generate indistinguishable adversarial examples with high transferability. Besides, smaller kernels and dynamic step size are also applied to generate adversarial examples for further increasing the attack success rates. Extensive experiments on an ImageNet-compatible dataset show that our method generates more indistinguishable adversarial examples and achieves higher attack success rates without extra running time and resource. Our best transfer-based attack NI-TI-DI-AITM can fool six classic defense models with an average success rate of 89.3% and three advanced defense models with an average success rate of 82.7%, which are higher than the state-of-the-art gradient-based attacks. Additionally, our method can also reduce nearly 20% mean perturbation. We expect that our method will serve as a new baseline for generating adversarial examples with better transferability and indistinguishability.

Uncovering the Local Hidden Community Structure in Social Networks

Hidden community is a useful concept proposed recently for social network analysis. To handle the rapid growth of network scale, in this work, we explore the detection of hidden communities from the local perspective, and propose a new method that detects and boosts each layer iteratively on a subgraph sampled from the original network. We first expand the seed set from a single seed node based on our modified local spectral method and detect an initial dominant local community. Then we temporarily remove the members of this community as well as their connections to other nodes, and detect all the neighborhood communities in the remaining subgraph, including some "broken communities" that only contain a fraction of members in the original network. The local community and neighborhood communities form a dominant layer, and by reducing the edge weights inside these communities, we weaken this layer's structure to reveal the hidden layers. Eventually, we repeat the whole process and all communities containing the seed node can be detected and boosted iteratively. We theoretically show that our method can avoid some situations that a broken community and the local community are regarded as one community in the subgraph, leading to the inaccuracy on detection which can be caused by global hidden community detection methods. Extensive experiments show that our method could significantly outperform the state-of-the-art baselines designed for either global hidden community detection or multiple local community detection.

Zappa-Szép product of a Fell bundle and a groupoid

We define the Zappa-Szép product of a Fell bundle by a groupoid, which turns out to be a Fell bundle over the Zappa-Szép product of the underlying groupoids. Under certain assumptions, every Fell bundle over the Zappa-Szép product of groupoids arises in this manner. We then study the representation associated with the Zappa-Szép product Fell bundle and show its relation to covariant representations. Finally, we study the associated universal C*-algebra, which turns out to be a C*-blend, generalizing an earlier result about the Zappa-Szép product of groupoid C*-algebras. In the case of discrete groups, the universal C*-algebra of a Fell bundle embeds injectively inside the universal C*-algebra of the Zappa-Szép product Fell bundle.

Dilation theory for right LCM semigroup dynamical systems

This paper examines actions of right LCM semigroups by endomorphisms of C*-algebras that encode an additional structure of the right LCM semigroup. We define contractive covariant representations for these semigroup dynamical systems and prove a generalized Stinespring's dilation theorem showing that these representations can be dilated if and only if the map on the C*-algebra is unital and completely positive. This generalizes earlier results about dilations of right LCM semigroups of contractions. In addition, we also give sufficient conditions under which a contractive covariant representation of a right LCM system can be dilated to an isometric representation of the boundary quotient.

Wold Decomposition on Odometer Semigroups

We establish a Wold-type decomposition for isometric and isometric Nica-covariant representations of the odometer semigroup. These generalize the Wold-type decomposition for commuting pairs of isometries due to Popovici and for pairs of doubly commuting isometries due to Słociński.

Zappa-Szép actions of groups on product systems

Let $G$ be a group and $X$ be a product system over a semigroup $P$. Suppose $G$ has a left action on $P$ and $P$ has a right action on $G$, so that one can form a Zappa-Szép product $P\bowtie G$. We define a Zappa-Szép action of $G$ on $X$ to be a collection of functions on $X$ that are compatible with both actions from $P\bowtie G$ in a certain sense. Given a Zappa-Szép action of $G$ on $X$, we construct a new product system $X\bowtie G$ over $P\bowtie G$, called the Zappa-Szép product of $X$ by $G$. We then associate to $X\bowtie G$ several universal C*-algebras and prove their respective Hao-Ng type isomorphisms. A special case of interest is when a Zappa-Szép action is homogeneous. This case naturally generalizes group actions on product systems in the literature. For this case, besides the Zappa-Szép product system $X\bowtie G$, one can also construct a new type of Zappa-Szép product $X \widetilde\bowtie G$ over $P$. Some essential differences arise between these two types of Zappa-Szép product systems and their associated C*-algebras.

Local Generalization and Bucketization Technique for Personalized Privacy Preservation

Anonymization technique has been extensively studied and widely applied for privacy-preserving data publishing. In most previous approaches, a microdata table consists of three categories of attribute: explicit-identifier, quasi-identifier (QI), and sensitive attribute. Actually, different individuals may have different view on the sensitivity of different attributes. Therefore, there is another type of attribute that contains both QI values and sensitive values, namely, semi-sensitive attribute. Based on such observation, we propose a new anonymization technique, called local generalization and bucketization, to prevent identity disclosure and protect the sensitive values on each semi-sensitive attribute and sensitive attribute. The rationale is to use local generalization and local bucketization to divide the tuples into local equivalence groups and partition the sensitive values into local buckets, respectively. The protections of local generalization and local bucketization are independent, so that they can be implemented by appropriate algorithms without weakening other protection, respectively. Besides, the protection of local bucketization for each semi-sensitive attribute and sensitive attribute is also independent. Consequently, local bucketization can comply with various principles in different attributes according to the actual requirements of anonymization. The conducted extensive experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

$C^*$-Envelope and Dilation Theory of Semigroup Dynamical Systems

In this paper, we construct, for a certain class of semigroup dynamical systems, two operator algebras that are universal with respect to their corresponding covariance conditions: one being self-adjoint, and another being non-self-adjoint. We prove that the $C^*$-envelope of the non-self-adjoint operator algebra is precisely the self-adjoint one. This result leads to a number of new examples of operator algebras and their $C^*$-envelopes, with many from number fields and commutative rings. We further establish the functoriality of these operator algebras along with their applications.

Amenability and functoriality of right-LCM semigroup C*-algebras

We prove a functoriality result for the full C*-algebras of right-LCM monoids with respect to monoid inclusions that are closed under factorization and preserve orthogonality, and use this to show that if a right-LCM monoid is amenable in the sense of Nica, then so are its submonoids. As applications, we complete the classification of Artin monoids with respect to Nica amenability by showing that only the right-angled ones are amenable in the sense of Nica and we show that the Nica amenability of a graph product of right-LCM semigroups is inherited by the factors.

Structure of free semigroupoid algebras

A free semigroupoid algebra is the closure of the algebra generated by a TCK family of a graph in the weak operator topology. We obtain a structure theory for these algebras analogous to that of free semigroup algebra. We clarify the role of absolute continuity and wandering vectors. These results are applied to obtain a Lebesgue-von Neumann-Wold decomposition of TCK families, along with reflexivity, a Kaplansky density theorem and classification for free semigroupoid algebras. Several classes of examples are discussed and developed, including self-adjoint examples and a classification of atomic free semigroupoid algebras up to unitary equivalence.

Regular Dilation and Nica-covariant Representation on Right LCM Semigroups

Regular dilation has recently been extended to graph product of $\mathbb{N}$, where having a *-regular dilation is equivalent to having a minimal isometric Nica-covariant dilation. In this paper, we first extend the result to right LCM semigroups, and establish a similar equivalence among *-regular dilation, minimal isometric Nica-covariant dilation, and a Brehmer-type condition. This result can be applied to various semigroups to establish conditions for *-regular dilation.

Regular Dilation on Graph Products of $\mathbb{N}$

We extended the definition of regular dilation to graph products of $\mathbb{N}$, which is an important class of quasi-lattice ordered semigroups. Two important results in dilation theory are unified under our result: namely, Brehmer's regular dilation on $\mathbb{N}^k$ and Frazho-Bunce-Popescu's dilation of row contractions. We further show that a representation of a graph product has an isometric Nica-covariant dilation if and only if it is $\ast$-regular. A special case of our result was considered by Popescu, and we studied the connection with Popescu's work.

A Novel Hybrid Beamforming Algorithm with Unified Analog Beamforming by Subspace Construction Based on Partial CSI for Massive MIMO-OFDM Systems

Hybrid beamforming (HB) has been widely studied for reducing the number of costly radio frequency (RF) chains in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, previous works on HB are limited to a single user equipment (UE) or a single group of UEs, employing the frequency-flat first-level analog beamforming (AB) that cannot be applied to multiple groups of UEs served in different frequency resources in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In this paper, a novel HB algorithm with unified AB based on the spatial covariance matrix (SCM) knowledge of all UEs is proposed for a massive MIMO-OFDM system in order to support multiple groups of UEs. The proposed HB method with a much smaller number of RF chains can achieve more than 95% performance of full digital beamforming. In addition, a novel practical subspace construction (SC) algorithm based on partial channel state information is proposed to estimate the required SCM. The proposed SC method can offer more than 97% performance of the perfect SCM case. With the proposed methods, significant cost and power savings can be achieved without large loss in performance. Furthermore, the proposed methods can be applied to massive MIMO-OFDM systems in both time-division duplex and frequency-division duplex.

Regular Representations of Lattice Ordered Semigroups

We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a representation of a lattice ordered semigroup to be regular, in the sense that certain extensions are completely positive definite. This result generalizes a theorem due to Brehmer where the lattice ordered group was taken to be $\mathbb{Z}_+^Ω$. As an immediate consequence, we prove that contractive Nica-covariant representations on lattice ordered semigroups are regular, and therefore, its minimal isometric dilation is also Nica-covariant. We also introduce an analog of commuting row contractions on lattice ordered group and show that such a representation is regular.

Small Cell In-Band Wireless Backhaul in Massive MIMO Systems: A Cooperation of Next-Generation Techniques

Massive multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) systems, dense small-cells (SCs), and full duplex are three candidate techniques for next-generation communication systems. The cooperation of next-generation techniques could offer more benefits, e.g., SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems. In this paper, three strategies of SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems are introduced and compared, i.e., complete time-division duplex (CTDD), zero-division duplex (ZDD), and ZDD with interference rejection (ZDD-IR). Simulation results demonstrate that SC in-band wireless backhaul has the potential to improve the throughput for massive MIMO systems. Specifically, among the three strategies, CTDD is the simplest one and could achieve decent throughput improvement. Depending on conditions, with the self-interference cancellation capability at SCs, ZDD could achieve better throughput than CTDD, even with residual self-interference. Moreover, ZDD-IR requires the additional interference rejection process at the BS compared to ZDD, but it could generally achieve better throughput than CTDD and ZDD.
