The absence of phase transition for the classical XY-model on Sierpinski pyramid with fractal dimension D=2

For the spin models with continuous symmetry on regular lattices and finite range of interactions the lower critical dimension is d=2. In two dimensions the classical XY-model displays Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition associated with unbinding of topological defects (vortices and antivortices). We perform a Monte Carlo study of the classical XY-model on Sierpinski pyramids whose fractal dimension is D=log4/log2=2 and the average coordination number per site is about 7. The specific heat does not depend on the system size which indicates the absence of long range order. From the dependence of the helicity modulus on the cluster size and on boundary conditions we draw a conclusion that in the thermodynamic limit there is no Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at any finite temperature. This conclusion is also supported by our results for linear magnetic susceptibility. The lack of finite temperature phase transition is presumably caused by the finite order of ramification of Sierpinski pyramid.

Monte Carlo study of the XY-model on Sierpinski gasket

We have performed a Monte Carlo study of the classical XY-model on two-dimensional Sierpinski gaskets of several cluster sizes. From the dependence of the helicity modulus on the cluster size we conclude that there is no phase transition in this system at a finite temperature. This is in agreement with previous findings for the harmonic approximation to the XY-model on Sierpinski gasket and is analogous to the absence of finite temperature phase transition for the Ising model on fractals with a finite order of ramification.

Effect of disorder on the far-infrared conductivity and on the microwave conductivity of two-band superconductors

We consider the far-infrared and the microwave conductivities of a two-band superconductor with non-magnetic impurities. The strong coupling expressions for the frequency and temperature dependent conductivity of a two-band superconductor are developed assuming isotropic bands and interactions. Our numerical results obtained using realistic interaction parameters for MgB$_{2}$ are compared with experiments on this compound. We find that the available experimental results for the far-infrared conductivity of MgB$_{2}$ are consistent with multi-band superconductivity in the presence of a sufficiently strong interband impurity scattering. On the other hand, our numerical results for the microwave conductivity in the superconducting state indicate that the experimental results obtained on samples with the highest transition temperature $T_{c}$ are consistent with a low interband impurity scattering rate but depend sensitively on the ratio of the total scattering rates in the two bands. For the $π$-band scattering rate $γ_π$ not greater than the $σ$-band scattering rate $γ_σ$ there is a single, broad, low-temperature (at about 0.5$T_{c}$) coherence peak in the microwave conductivity. For $γ_π/γ_σ$=4--7 a high-temperature (at about 0.9$T_{c}$) coherence peak is dominant, but there is also a low-temperature peak/shoulder resulting from the contribution of the $π$-band carriers to the microwave conductivity. For $γ_π/γ_σ\gg$1 only the high-temperature coherence peak should be observable.

On the correct formula for the lifetime broadened superconducting density of states

We argue that the well known Dynes formula [Dynes R C {\it et al.} 1978 {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 41} 1509] for the superconducting quasiparticle density of states, which tries to incorporate the lifetime broadening in an approximate way, cannot be justified microscopically for conventional superconductors. Instead, we propose a new simple formula in which the energy gap has a finite imaginary part $-Δ_2$ and the quasiparticle energy is real. We prove that in the quasiparticle approximation 2$Δ_2$ gives the quasiparticle decay rate at the gap edge for conventional superconductors. This conclusion does not depend on the nature of interactions that cause the quasiparticle decay. The new formula is tested on the case of a strong coupling superconductor Pb$_{0.9}$Bi$_{0.1}$ and an excellent agreement with theoretical predictions is obtained. While both the Dynes formula and the one proposed in this work give good fits and fit parameters for Pb$_{0.9}$Bi$_{0.1}$, only the latter formula can be justified microscopically.
