Combinatorial models for moduli spaces of open Riemann surfaces

We present a simplified formulation of open intersection numbers, as an alternative to the theory initiated by Pandharipande, Solomon and Tessler. The relevant moduli spaces consist of Riemann surfaces (either with or without boundary) with only interior marked points. These spaces have a combinatorial description using a generalization of ribbon graphs, with a straightforward compactification and corresponding intersection theory. Crucially, the generating functions for the two different constructions of open intersection numbers are identical. In particular, our construction provides a complete proof of the statement that this generating function is a solution of the MKP hierarchy, satisfies W-constraints, and additionally proves in the affirmative the Q-grading conjecture for distinguishing contributions from surfaces with different numbers of boundary components, as was previously proposed by the author.

Topological recursion for open intersection numbers

We present a topological recursion formula for calculating the intersection numbers defined on the moduli space of open Riemann surfaces. The spectral curve is $x = \frac{1}{2}y^2$, the same as spectral curve used to calculate intersection numbers for closed Riemann surfaces, but the formula itself is a variation of the usual Eynard-Orantin recursion. It looks like the recursion formula used for spectral curves of degree 3, and also includes features present in $β$-deformed models. The recursion formula suggests a conjectural refinement to the generating function that allows for distinguishing intersection numbers on moduli spaces with different numbers of boundary components.

The spectral curve of the Eynard-Orantin recursion via the Laplace transform

The Eynard-Orantin recursion formula provides an effective tool for certain enumeration problems in geometry. The formula requires a spectral curve and the recursion kernel. We present a uniform construction of the spectral curve and the recursion kernel from the unstable geometries of the original counting problem. We examine this construction using four concrete examples: Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants (or higher-genus analogue of the Catalan numbers), the intersection numbers of tautological cotangent classes on the moduli stack of stable pointed curves, single Hurwitz numbers, and the stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of the complex projective line.

The Kontsevich constants for the volume of the moduli of curves and topological recursion

We give an Eynard-Orantin type topological recursion formula for the canonical Euclidean volume of the combinatorial moduli space of pointed smooth algebraic curves. The recursion comes from the edge removal operation on the space of ribbon graphs. As an application we obtain a new proof of the Kontsevich constants for the ratio of the Euclidean and the symplectic volumes of the moduli space of curves.

Topological recursion for symplectic volumes of moduli spaces of curves

We construct locally defined symplectic torus actions on ribbon graph complexes. Symplectic reduction techniques allow for a recursive formula for the symplectic volumes of these spaces. Taking the Laplace transform results in the Eynard-Orantin recursion formulas for the Airy curve x = y^2 / 2.

The Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation and the Bouchard-Marino conjecture on Hurwitz numbers

We calculate the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil. The result is a polynomial equation that has the topological structure identical to the Mirzakhani recursion formula for the Weil-Petersson volume of the moduli space of bordered hyperbolic surfaces. We find that the direct image of this Laplace transformed equation via the inverse of the Lambert W-function is the topological recursion formula for Hurwitz numbers conjectured by Bouchard and Marino using topological string theory.

Mirzakhani's recursion relations, Virasoro constraints and the KdV hierarchy

We present in this paper a differential version of Mirzakhani's recursion relation for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of bordered Riemann surfaces. We discover that the differential relation, which is equivalent to the original integral formula of Mirzakhani, is a Virasoro constraint condition on a generating function for these volumes. We also show that the generating function for psi and kappa_1 intersections on the moduli space of stable algebraic curves is a 1-parameter solution to the KdV hierarchy. It recovers the Witten-Kontsevich generating function when the parameter is set to be 0.
