Fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, knot Floer homology and the cinquefoil

Given any genus-two, hyperbolic, fibered knot in $S^3$ with nonzero fractional Dehn twist coefficient, we show that its pseudo-Anosov representative has a fixed point. Combined with recent work of Baldwin--Hu--Sivek, this proves that knot Floer homology detects the cinquefoil knot $T(2,5)$, and that the cinquefoil is the only genus-two L-space knot in $S^3$. Our results have applications to Floer homology of cyclic branched covers over knots in $S^3$, to $\mathit{SU}(2)$-abelian Dehn surgeries, and to Khovanov and annular Khovanov homology. Along the way to proving our fixed point result, we describe a small list of train tracks carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in most strata on the punctured disk. As a consequence, we find a canonical track $τ$ carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in a particular stratum $\mathcal{Q}_0$ on the genus-two surface, and describe every fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism in $\mathcal{Q}_0$.

Fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosovs, and genus-two L-space knots in the Poincare sphere

We classify genus-two L-space knots in the Poincaré homology sphere. This leads to the second knot Floer homology detection result for a knot of genus at least two, and the first such result outside of $S^3$. The argument uses the theory of train tracks and folding automata, and builds off of recent work connecting knot Floer homology of fibered knots to fixed points of mapping classes. As a consequence of our proof technique, we almost completely classify genus-two, hyperbolic, fibered knots with knot Floer homology of rank 1 in their next-to-top grading in any 3-manifold.

Non-orientable Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian knots

We investigate when a Legendrian knot in standard contact $\mathbb{R}^3$ has a non-orientable exact Lagrangian filling. We prove analogs of several results in the orientable setting, develop new combinatorial obstructions to fillability, and determine when several families of knots have such fillings. In particular, we determine completely when an alternating knot (and more generally a plus-adequate knot) is decomposably non-orientably fillable, and classify the fillability of most torus and 3-strand pretzel knots. We also describe rigidity phenomena of decomposable non-orientable fillings, including finiteness of the possible normal Euler numbers of fillings, and the minimization of crosscap numbers of fillings, obtaining results which contrast in interesting ways with the smooth setting.

Floer homology, twist coefficients, and capping off

For an open book decomposition $(S,ϕ)$, the fractional Dehn twist coefficients are rational numbers measuring the amount that the monodromy $ϕ$ twists the surface $S$ near each boundary component. In general, the twist coefficients do not behave nicely under the operation of capping off a boundary component. The goal of this paper is to use Heegaard Floer homology to constrain the behavior of the fractional Dehn twist coefficients after capping off. We also use our results about fractional Dehn twists to study the Floer homology of cyclic branched covers over fibered two-component links.
