Bordisms and unbounded $KK$-theory

This monograph studies $KK$-theory in its unbounded model. The central object is the $KK$-bordism group obtained by imposing the $KK$-bordism relation on unbounded $KK$-cycles. In the paradigm of noncommutative geometry, an unbounded $KK$-cycle is a noncommutative geometry in its own right and our approach allow for the study of mildly noncommutative geometries (orbifolds, foliations et cetera) as if they were closed manifolds. The techniques we introduce enable us to directly import manifold techniques and arguments into the important yet technical field of unbounded $KK$-theory. Recent decades has seen a tremendous progress in the study of the unbounded model for $KK$ as well as secondary invariants, the first motivated by refining computational tools in Kasparov's $KK$-theory and the second by applications to geometry and topology. The aim of this work is to provide a common framework for these two areas: equipping unbounded $KK$-cycles with a geometrically motivated relation recovering Kasparov's $KK$-theory that is computationally tractable for working with secondary invariants.

The odd spectral localiser via asymptotic morphisms and quasi-projections

We describe the index pairing between an odd K-theory class and an odd unbounded Kasparov module by a pair of quasi-projections, supported on a submodule obtained from a finite spectral truncation. We achieve this by pairing the K-theory class with an asymptotic morphism determined by the unbounded Kasparov module. We interpret the spectral localiser of Loring and Schulz-Baldes as an instance of such an index pairing.

Comparison of Levi-Civita connections in noncommutative geometry

We compare the constructions of Levi-Civita connections for noncommutative algebras developed in arXiv:1505.07330, arXiv:1809.06721, arXiv:2403.13735. The assumptions in these various constructions differ, but when they are all defined, we provide direct translations between them. An essential assumption is that the (indefinite) Hermitian inner product on differential forms/vector fields provides an isomorphism with the module dual. By exploiting our translations and clarifying the simplifications that occur for centred bimodules, we extend the existence results for Hermitian torsion-free connections in arXiv:1505.07330, arXiv:1809.06721.

Heat operators and isometry groups of Cuntz-Krieger algebras

This paper introduces heat semigroups of topological Markov chains and Cuntz-Krieger algebras by means of spectral noncommutative geometry. Using recent advances on the logarithmic Dirichlet Laplacian on Ahlfors regular metric-measure spaces, we construct spectral triples on Cuntz-Krieger algebras from singular integral operators. These spectral triples exhaust odd K-homology and for Cuntz algebras we can compute their heat operators explicitly as Riesz potential operators. We also describe their isometry group in terms of the automorphism group of the underlying directed graph and prove that the Voiculescu noncommutative topological entropy vanishes on isometries.

Ideal quantum metrics from fractional Laplacians

We develop a novel framework for Monge--Kantorovič metrics using Schatten ideals and commutators of fractional Laplacians on Ahlfors regular spaces. Notably, for those metrics we derive closed formulas in terms of spectra of higher-order fractional Laplacians. For our proofs we develop new techniques in noncommutative geometry, in particular a Weyl law and Schatten-class commutators, yielding refined quantum metrics on the space of Borel probability measures. Lastly, our fractional analysis extends to dynamical systems. We showcase this in the setting of expansive algebraic $\mathbb Z^m$-actions and homoclinic $C^*$-algebras of certain hyperbolic dynamical systems. These findings illustrate the versatility of fractional analysis in fractal geometry, dynamical systems and noncommutative geometry.

Existence and uniqueness of the Levi-Civita connection on noncommutative differential forms

We combine Hilbert module and algebraic techniques to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an Hermitian torsion-free connection on the bimodule of differential one-forms of a first order differential calculus. In the presence of the extra structure of a bimodule connection, we give sufficient conditions for uniqueness. We prove that any $θ$-deformation of a compact Riemannian manifold admits a unique Hermitian torsion-free bimodule connection and provide an explicit construction of it. Specialising to classical Riemannian manifolds yields a novel construction of the Levi-Civita connection on the cotangent bundle.

Theta correspondence via group C*-algebras

We prove that the well-known explicit construction of the local theta correspondence by Li has a simple interpretation in terms of group C*-algebras. In particular, we deduce that in two standard cases where Li's method work, local theta correspondence arises from a continuous functor. Moreover, using results from a companion paper, we treat global theta correspondence using C*-algebraic methods. As a byproduct, we exhibit that Rallis inner product formula can be interpreted as a certain natural inclusion being an isometry.

Adelic C*-correspondences and parabolic induction

In analogy with the construction of representations of adelic groups as restricted products of representations of local groups, we study restricted tensor products of Hilbert C*-modules and of C*-correspondences. The construction produces global C*-correspondences from compatible collections of local C*-correspondences. When applied to the collection of C*-correspondences capturing local parabolic induction, the construction produces a global C*-correspondence that captures adelic parabolic induction.

Equal rank local theta correspondence as a strong Morita equivalence

Let (G,H) be one of the equal rank reductive dual pairs (Mp_{2n},O_{2n+1}) or (U_n,U_n) over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well-known that the theta correspondence establishes a bijection between certain subsets, say R(G) and R(H), of the tempered duals of G and H. We prove that this bijection arises from an equivalence between the categories of representations of two C*-algebras whose spectra are R(G) and R(H). This equivalence is implemented by the induction functor associated to a Morita equivalence bimodule (in the sense of Rieffel) which we construct using the oscillator representation. As an immediate corollary, we deduce that the bijection is functorial and continuous with respect to weak inclusion. We derive further consequences regarding the transfer of characters and preservation of formal degrees.

The logarithmic Dirichlet Laplacian on Ahlfors regular spaces

We introduce the logarithmic analogue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Ahlfors regular metric-measure spaces. This operator is intrinsically defined with spectral properties analogous to those of elliptic pseudo-differential operators on Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, its heat semigroup consists of compact operators which are trace-class after some critical point in time. Moreover, its domain is a Banach module over the Dini continuous functions and every Hölder continuous function is a smooth vector. Finally, the operator is compatible, in the sense of noncommutative geometry, with the action of a large class of non-isometric homeomorphisms.

Curvature and Weitzenbock formula for spectral triples

Using the Levi-Civita connection on the noncommutative differential one-forms of a spectral triple $(\B,\H,\D)$, we define the full Riemann curvature tensor, the Ricci curvature tensor and scalar curvature. We give a definition of Dirac spectral triples and derive a general Weitzenbock formula for them. We apply these tools to $θ$-deformations of compact Riemannian manifolds. We show that the Riemann and Ricci tensors transform naturally under $θ$-deformation, whereas the connection Laplacian, Clifford representation of the curvature and the scalar curvature are all invariant under deformation.

Curvature and Weitzenbock formula for the Podleś quantum sphere

We prove that there is a unique Levi-Civita connection on the one-forms of the Dabrowski-Sitarz spectral triple for the Podleś sphere $S^{2}_{q}$. We compute the full curvature tensor, as well as the Ricci and scalar curvature of the Podleś sphere using the framework of \cite{MRLC}. The scalar curvature is a constant, and as the parameter $q\to 1$, the scalar curvature converges to the classical value $2$. We prove a generalised Weitzenbock formula for the spinor bundle, which differs from the classical Lichnerowicz formula for $q\neq 1$, yet recovers it for $q\to 1$.

Classifying the Dynamics of Architected Materials by Groupoid Methods

We consider synthetic materials consisting of self-coupled identical resonators carrying classical internal degrees of freedom. The architecture of such material is specified by the positions and orientations of the resonators. Our goal is to calculate the smallest C*-algebra that covers the dynamical matrices associated to a fixed architecture and adjustable internal structures. We give the answer in terms of a groupoid C*-algebra that can be canonically associated to a uniformly discrete subset of the group of isometries of the Euclidean space. Our result implies that the isomorphism classes of these C*-algebras split these architected materials into classes containing materials that are identical from the dynamical point of view.

A groupoid approach to interacting fermions

We consider the algebra $\dotΣ(\mathcal L)$ generated by the inner-limit derivations over the ${\rm GICAR}$ algebra of a fermion gas populating an aperiodic Delone set $\mathcal L$. Under standard physical assumptions such as finite interaction range, Galilean invariance and continuity with respect to the aperiodic lattice, we demonstrate that the image of $\dot Σ(\mathcal L)$ through the Fock representation can be completed to a groupoid-solvable pro-$C^\ast$-algebra. Our result is the first step towards unlocking the $K$-theoretic tools available for separable $C^\ast$-algebra for applications in the context of interacting fermions.

The Friedrichs angle and alternating projections in Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules

Let $B$ be a $C^{*}$-algebra, $X$ a Hilbert $C^{*}$-module over $B$ and $M,N\subset X$ a pair of complemented submodules. We prove the $C^{*}$-module version of von Neumann's alternating projections theorem: the sequence $(P_{N}P_{M})^{n}$ is Cauchy in the $*$-strong module topology if and only if $M\cap N$ is the complement of $\overline{M^{\perp}+N^{\perp}}$. In this case, the $*$-strong limit of $(P_{M}P_{N})^{n}$ is the orthogonal projection onto $M\cap N$. We use this result and the local-global principle to show that the cosine of the Friedrichs angle $c(M,N)$ between any pair of complemented submodules $M,N\subset X$ is well-defined and that $c(M,N)<1$ if and only if $M\cap N$ is complemented and $M+N$ is closed.

Gauge theory on noncommutative Riemannian principal bundles

We present a new, general approach to gauge theory on principal $G$-spectral triples, where $G$ is a compact connected Lie group. We introduce a notion of vertical Riemannian geometry for $G$-$C^\ast$-algebras and prove that the resulting noncommutative orbitwise family of Kostant's cubic Dirac operators defines a natural unbounded $KK^G$-cycle in the case of a principal $G$-action. Then, we introduce a notion of principal $G$-spectral triple and prove, in particular, that any such spectral triple admits a canonical factorisation in unbounded $KK^G$-theory with respect to such a cycle: up to a remainder, the total geometry is the twisting of the basic geometry by a noncommutative superconnection encoding the vertical geometry and underlying principal connection. Using these notions, we formulate an approach to gauge theory that explicitly generalises the classical case up to a groupoid cocycle and is compatible in general with this factorisation; in the unital case, it correctly yields a real affine space of noncommutative principal connections with affine gauge action. Our definitions cover all locally compact classical principal $G$-bundles and are compatible with $θ$-deformation; in particular, they cover the $θ$-deformed quaternionic Hopf fibration $C^\infty(S^7_θ) \hookleftarrow C^\infty(S^4_θ)$ as a noncommutative principal $\operatorname{SU}(2)$-bundle.

Localised module frames and Wannier bases from groupoid Morita equivalences

Following the operator algebraic approach to Gabor analysis, we construct frames of translates for the Hilbert space localisation of the Morita equivalence bimodule arising from a groupoid equivalence between Hausdorff groupoids, where one of the groupoids is étale and with a compact unit space. For finitely generated and projective submodules, we show these frames are orthonormal bases if and only if the module is free. We then apply this result to the study of localised Wannier bases of spectral subspaces of Schrödinger operators with atomic potentials supported on (aperiodic) Delone sets. The noncommutative Chern numbers provide a topological obstruction to fast-decaying Wannier bases and we show this result is stable under deformations of the underlying Delone set.
