Bass notes of random hyperbolic surfaces of large genus

This is a S\'eminaire Bourbaki survey on spectral gaps of random hyperbolic surfaces. The first part of the text is a brief survey on the geometry and spectra of random hyperbolic surfaces. After this, we discuss the results by Hide-Magee, Anantharaman-Monk and Hide-Macera-Thomas on near optimal spectral gaps for random surfaces.

Apollonian random manifolds and their bass notes

We study the spectrum of the Laplacian on two models of random hyperbolic 3-orbifolds, related to the Apollonian group and the super Apollonian group. We determine explicit spectral gaps for these random orbifolds. Moreover, we use our model to investigate the bass note spectrum of the set of hyperbolic 3-orbifolds.

Random surfaces with large systoles

We present two constructions, both inspired by ideas from graph theory, of sequences random surfaces of growing area, whose systoles grow logarithmically as a function of their area. This also allows us to prove a new lower bound on the maximal systole of a closed orientable hyperbolic surface of a given genus.

Three counterexamples to a conjecture of Colin de Verdi\`ere on multiplicity

We exhibit closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $10$, $17$, and $37$ such that the multiplicity of the first nonzero eigenvalue of their Laplacian is larger than the maximum conjectured by Yves Colin de Verdi\`ere in 1986. In order to determine these multiplicities, we apply the twisted Selberg trace formula to the representations induced by the isometry groups of these surfaces on corresponding triangle groups.

Linear programming bounds for hyperbolic surfaces

We adapt linear programming methods from sphere packings to closed hyperbolic surfaces and obtain new upper bounds on their systole, their kissing number, the first positive eigenvalue of their Laplacian, the multiplicity of their first eigenvalue, and their number of small eigenvalues. Apart from a few exceptions, the resulting bounds are the current best known both in low genus and as the genus tends to infinity. Our methods also provide lower bounds on the systole (achieved in genus $2$ to $7$, $14$, and $17$) that are sufficient for surfaces to have a spectral gap larger than $1/4$.

On Cheeger constants of hyperbolic surfaces

It is a well-known result due to Bollobas that the maximal Cheeger constant of large $d$-regular graphs cannot be close to the Cheeger constant of the $d$-regular tree. We prove analogously that the Cheeger constant of closed hyperbolic surfaces of large genus is bounded from above by $2/π\approx 0.63...$ which is strictly less than the Cheeger constant of the hyperbolic plane. The proof uses a random construction based on a Poisson--Voronoi tessellation of the surface with a vanishing intensity.

The Klein quartic maximizes the multiplicity of the first positive eigenvalue of the Laplacian

We prove that Klein quartic maximizes the multiplicity of the first positive eigenvalue of the Laplacian among all closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $3$, with multiplicity equal to $8$. We also obtain partial results in genus $2$, where we find that the maximum multiplicity is between $3$ and $6$. Along the way, we show that for every $g\geq 2$, there exists some $\delta_g>0$ such that the multiplicity of any eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a closed hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ in the interval $[0,1/4+\delta_g]$ is at most $2g-1$ despite the fact that this interval can contain arbitrarily many eigenvalues. This extends a result of Otal to a larger interval but with a weaker bound, which nevertheless improves upon the general upper bound of S\'evennec.

Statistics of finite degree covers of torus knot complements

In the first part of this paper, we determine the asymptotic subgroup growth of the fundamental group of a torus knot complement. In the second part, we use this to study random finite degree covers of torus knot complements. We determine their Benjamini-Schramm limit and the linear growth rate of the Betti numbers of these covers. All these results generalise to a larger class of lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times \mathbb{R}$. As a by-product of our proofs, we obtain analogous limit theorems for high degree random covers of non-uniform Fuchsian lattices with torsion.

Lengths of closed geodesics on random surfaces of large genus

We prove Poisson approximation results for the bottom part of the length spectrum of a random closed hyperbolic surface of large genus. Here, a random hyperbolic surface is a surface picked at random using the Weil-Petersson volume form on the corresponding moduli space. As an application of our result, we compute the large genus limit of the expected systole.

A model for random three--manifolds

We study compact three-manifolds with boundary obtained by randomly gluing together truncated tetrahedra along their faces. We prove that, asymptotically almost surely as the number of tetrahedra tends to infinity, these manifolds are connected and have a single boundary component. We prove a law of large numbers for the genus of this boundary component, we show that the Heegaard genus of these manifolds is linear in the number of tetrahedra and we bound their first Betti number. We also show that, asymptotically almost surely as the number of tetrahedra tends to infinity, our manifolds admit a unique hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary. We prove a law of large numbers for the volume of this metric, prove that the associated Laplacian has a uniform spectral gap and show that the diameter of our manifolds is logarithmic as a function of their volume. Finally, we determine the Benjamini--Schramm limit of our sequence of random manifolds.

On distinct finite covers of 3-manifolds

Every closed orientable surface S has the following property: any two connected covers of S of the same degree are homeomorphic (as spaces). In this, paper we give a complete classification of compact 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary which have the above property. We also discuss related group-theoretic questions.

The diameter of random Belyi surfaces

We determine the asymptotic growth rate of the diameter of the random hyperbolic surfaces constructed by Brooks and Makover. This model consists of a uniform gluing of $2n$ hyperbolic ideal triangles along their sides followed by a compactification to get a random hyperbolic surface of genus roughly $n/2$. We show that the diameter of those random surfaces is asymptotic to $2 \log n$ in probability as $n \to \infty$.

Kissing numbers of regular graphs

We prove a sharp upper bound on the number of shortest cycles contained inside any connected graph in terms of its number of vertices, girth, and maximal degree. Equality holds only for Moore graphs, which gives a new characterization of these graphs. In the case of regular graphs, our result improves an inequality of Teo and Koh. We also show that a subsequence of the Ramanujan graphs of Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak have super-linear kissing numbers.

On the minimal diameter of closed hyperbolic surfaces

We prove that the minimal diameter of a hyperbolic compact orientable surface of genus $g$ is asymptotic to $\log g$ as $g \to \infty$. The proof relies on a random construction, which we analyse using lattice point counting theory and the exploration of random trivalent graphs.

Kissing numbers of closed hyperbolic manifolds

We prove an upper bound for the number of shortest closed geodesics in a closed hyperbolic manifold of any dimension in terms of its volume and systole, generalizing a theorem of Parlier for surfaces. We also obtain bounds on the number of primitive closed geodesics with length in a given interval that are uniform for all closed hyperbolic manifolds with bounded geometry. The proofs rely on the Selberg trace formula.

Universality for random surfaces in unconstrained genus

Starting from an arbitrary sequence of polygons whose total perimeter is $2n$, we can build an (oriented) surface by pairing their sides in a uniform fashion. Chmutov and Pittel (arXiv:1503.01816) have shown that, regardless of the configuration of polygons we started with, the degree sequence of the graph obtained this way is remarkably constant in total variation distance and converges towards a Poisson--Dirichlet partition as $n \to \infty$. We actually show that several other geometric properties of the graph are universal. En route we provide an alternative proof of a weak version of the result of Chmutov and Pittel using probabilistic techniques and related to the circle of ideas around the peeling process of random planar maps. At this occasion we also fill a gap in the existing literature by surveying the properties of a uniform random map with $n$ edges. In particular we show that the diameter of a random map with $n$ edges converges in law towards a random variable taking only values in $\{2,3\}$.
