On the Vinberg Family of K3 Surfaces

We study orthogonal modular forms associated with moduli spaces of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces whose generic transcendental lattices are of the form $T = H \oplus H \oplus L(-1)$ where $L$ is a root lattice of type $A_n$ or $D_n$. In Picard numbers $10$ through $17$, we use explicit Jacobian elliptic fibrations to construct modular forms on type IV domains associated with orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^+(T)$. We show that the coefficients of suitable Weierstrass models naturally realize generators for the corresponding graded rings of orthogonal modular forms.

Hermitian modular forms and algebraic modular forms on $SO(6)$

We state conjectures that relate Hermitian modular forms of degree two and algebraic modular forms for the compact group $SO(6)$. We provide evidence for these conjectures in the form of dimension formulas and explicit computations of eigenforms.

Quasi-modular forms for the orthogonal group and Gromov-Witten theory of Enriques surfaces

We develop the theory of almost-holomorphic and quasimodular forms for orthogonal groups of a lattice of signature $(2,n)$ through orthogonal lowering and raising operators. The interactions with the regularized theta lift of Borcherds is a central theme. Our main results are: (i) the constant-term morphism, which sends an almost-holomorphic modular form to its associated quasimodular form, is an isomorphism, (ii) description of spaces of quasimodular forms in terms of vector-valued modular forms, (iii) the lowering and raising operators satisfy equivariance properties with the theta lift, (iv) a weight-depth inequality which is a necessary and sufficient criterion for the theta lift of an almost-holomorphic modular form to be almost-holomorphic, (v) an explicit formula for the series expansion of the lift of any almost-holomorphic modular form, (vi) the Fourier-Jacobi coefficients of an orthogonal quasimodular form are quasi-Jacobi forms. As a geometric application, we conjecture that the Gromov-Witten potentials of Enriques and bielliptic surfaces are orthogonal quasimodular forms and satisfy holomorphic anomaly equations with respect to the lowering operators on quasimodular forms. We show that parallel statements for an arbitrary K3 or abelian-surface fibration do not hold.

K3 Surfaces and Orthogonal Modular Forms

We determine explicit generators for the ring of modular forms associated with the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ and of Picard rank 13 and higher. The K3 surfaces in question carry a canonical Jacobian elliptic fibration and the modular form generators appear as coefficients in the Weierstrass-type equations describing these fibrations.

Cones of Noether-Lefschetz divisors and moduli spaces of hyperk\"ahler manifolds

We give a general formula for generators of the NL-cone, the cone of effective linear combinations of irreducible components of Noether-Lefschetz divisors, on an orthogonal modular variety. We then fully describe the NL-cone and its extremal rays in the cases of moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces and hyperk\"ahler manifolds of known deformation type for low degree polarizations. Moreover, we exhibit explicit divisors in the boundary of NL-cones for polarizations of arbitrarily large degrees. Additionally, we study the NL-positivity of the canonical class for these modular varieties. As a consequence, we obtain uniruledness results for moduli spaces of primitively polarized hyperk\"ahler manifolds of ${\rm{OG6}}$ and ${\rm{Kum}}_n$-type. Finally, we show that any family of polarized hyperk\"ahler fourfolds of ${\rm{Kum}}_2$-type with polarization of degree $2$ and divisibility $2$ over a projective base is isotrivial.

Hyperbolization of Affine Lie Algebras

In 1983, Feingold and Frenkel discovered a relation between Siegel modular forms of genus two and a rank-three hyperbolic Kac--Moody algebra extending the affine Lie algebra of type $A_1$. It inspires a problem to explore more general relations between affine Lie algebras, hyperbolic Kac--Moody algebras and modular forms. In this paper, we give an automorphic answer to this problem. We classify hyperbolic Borcherds--Kac--Moody superalgebras whose super-denominators define reflective automorphic products of singular weight on lattices of type $2U\oplus L$. As a consequence, we prove that there are exactly $81$ affine Lie algebras $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$ which have extensions to hyperbolic BKM superalgebras for which the leading Fourier--Jacobi coefficients of super-denominators coincide with the denominators of $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$. We find that $69$ of them appear in Schellekens' list of semi-simple $V_1$ structures of holomorphic CFT of central charge $24$, while $8$ of them correspond to the $N=1$ structures of holomorphic SCFT of central charge $12$ composed of $24$ chiral fermions. The last $4$ cases are related to exceptional modular invariants from nontrivial automorphisms of fusion algebras. This clarifies the relationship of affine Lie algebras, vertex algebras and hyperbolic BKM superalgebras at the level of modular forms.

Sui Lutris: A Blockchain Combining Broadcast and Consensus

Sui Lutris is the first smart-contract platform to sustainably achieve sub-second finality. It achieves this significant decrease by employing consensusless agreement not only for simple payments but for a large variety of transactions. Unlike prior work, Sui Lutris neither compromises expressiveness nor throughput and can run perpetually without restarts. Sui Lutris achieves this by safely integrating consensuless agreement with a high-throughput consensus protocol that is invoked out of the critical finality path but ensures that when a transaction is at risk of inconsistent concurrent accesses, its settlement is delayed until the total ordering is resolved. Building such a hybrid architecture is especially delicate during reconfiguration events, where the system needs to preserve the safety of the consensusless path without compromising the long-term liveness of potentially misconfigured clients. We thus develop a novel reconfiguration protocol, the first to provably show the safe and efficient reconfiguration of a consensusless blockchain. Sui Lutris is currently running in production and underpins the Sui smart-contract platform. Combined with the use of Objects instead of accounts it enables the safe execution of smart contracts that expose objects as a first-class resource. In our experiments Sui Lutris achieves latency lower than 0.5 seconds for throughput up to 5,000 certificates per second (150k ops/s with transaction blocks), compared to the state-of-the-art real-world consensus latencies of 3 seconds. Furthermore, it gracefully handles validators crash-recovery and does not suffer visible performance degradation during reconfiguration.

On the non-existence of singular Borcherds products

Let $l\geq 3$ and $F$ be a modular form of weight $l/2-1$ on $\mathrm{O}(l,2)$ which vanishes only on rational quadratic divisors. We prove that $F$ has only simple zeros and that $F$ is anti-invariant under every reflection fixing a quadratic divisor in the zeros of $F$. In particular, $F$ is a reflective modular form. As a corollary, the existence of $F$ leads to $l\leq 20$ or $l=26$, in which case $F$ equals the Borcherds form on $\mathrm{II}_{26,2}$. This answers a question posed by Borcherds in 1995.

Binary theta functions and Borcherds products

We obtain infinite product expansions in the sense of Borcherds for theta functions associated with certain positive-definite binary quadratic and binary hermitian forms. Among other things, we show that every weight 1 binary theta function is a Borcherds product. In particular, binary theta functions have zeros only at quadratic irrationalities.

Mathieu moonshine and Borcherds products

The twisted elliptic genera of a $K3$ surface associated with the conjugacy classes of the Mathieu group $M_{24}$ are known to be weak Jacobi forms of weight $0$. In 2010, Cheng constructed formal infinite products from the twisted elliptic genera and conjectured that they define Siegel modular forms of degree two. In this paper we prove that for each conjugacy class of level $N_g$ the associated product is a meromorphic Borcherds product on the lattice $U(N_g)\oplus U \oplus A_1$ in a strict sense. We also compute the divisors of these products and determine for which conjugacy classes the product can be realized as an additive (generalized Saito--Kurokawa) lift.

The fake monster algebra and singular Borcherds products

In this paper we consider several problems in the theory of automorphic products and generalized Kac--Moody algebras proposed by Borcherds in 1995. We show that the denominator of the fake monster algebra defines the unique holomorphic Borcherds product of singular weight on a maximal lattice. We give a full classification of symmetric holomorphic Borcherds products of singular weight on lattices of prime level. Finally we prove that all twisted denominator identities of the fake monster algebra arise as the Fourier expansions of Borcherds products of singular weight at a certain cusp. The proofs rely on an identification between modular forms for the Weil representation attached to lattices of type $U(N)\oplus U \oplus L$ and certain tuples of Jacobi forms of level $N$.

On Hermitian Eisenstein series of degree 2

We consider the Hermitian Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$ of degree $2$ and weight $k$ associated with an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and determine the influence of $\mathbb{K}$ on the arithmetic and the growth of its Fourier coefficients. We find that they satisfy the identity $E^{{(\mathbb{K})}^2}_4 = E^{{(\mathbb{K})}}_8$, which is well-known for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$, if and only if $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{-3})$. As an application, we show that the Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$, $k=4,6,8,10,12$ are algebraically independent whenever $\mathbb{K}\neq \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$. The difference between the Siegel and the restriction of the Hermitian to the Siegel half-space is a cusp form in the Maass space that does not vanish identically for sufficiently large weight; however, when the weight is fixed, we will see that it tends to $0$ as the discriminant tends to $-\infty$. Finally, we show that these forms generate the space of cusp forms in the Maass Spezialschar as a module over the Hecke algebra as $\mathbb{K}$ varies over imaginary-quadratic number fields.

Modular forms with poles on hyperplane arrangements

We study algebras of meromorphic modular forms whose poles lie on Heegner divisors for orthogonal and unitary groups associated to root lattices. We give a uniform construction of $147$ hyperplane arrangements on type IV symmetric domains for which the algebras of modular forms with constrained poles are free and therefore the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces. We also construct $8$ free algebras of modular forms on complex balls with poles on hyperplane arrangements. The most striking example is the discriminant kernel of the $2U\oplus D_{11}$ lattice, which admits a free algebra on $14$ meromorphic generators. Along the way, we determine minimal systems of generators for non-free algebras of orthogonal modular forms for $26$ reducible root lattices and prove the modularity of formal Fourier--Jacobi series associated to them. By exploiting an identity between weight one singular additive and multiplicative lifts on $2U\oplus D_{11}$, we prove that the additive lift of any (possibly weak) theta block of positive weight and $q$-order one is a Borcherds product; the special case of holomorphic theta blocks of one elliptic variable is the theta block conjecture of Gritsenko, Poor and Yuen.

Siegel modular forms of degree two and level five

We construct a ring of meromorphic Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and level 5, with singularities supported on an arrangement of Humbert surfaces, which is generated by four singular theta lifts of weights 1, 1, 2, 2 and their Jacobian. We use this to prove that the ring of holomorphic Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and level $\Gamma_0(5)$ is minimally generated by eighteen modular forms of weights 2, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 10, 11, 11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 15.

Graded rings of Hermitian modular forms with singularities

We study graded rings of meromorphic Hermitian modular forms of degree two whose poles are supported on an arrangement of Heegner divisors. For the group $\mathrm{SU}_{2,2}(\mathcal{O}_K)$ where $K$ is the imaginary-quadratic number field of discriminant $-d$, $d \in \{4, 7, 8, 11, 15, 19, 20, 24\}$ we obtain a polynomial algebra without relations. In particular the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces.

Free algebras of modular forms on ball quotients

In this paper we study algebras of modular forms on unitary groups of signature $(n,1)$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an algebra of unitary modular forms to be free in terms of the modular Jacobian. As a corollary we obtain a criterion that guarantees in many cases that, if $L$ is an even lattice with complex multiplication and the ring of modular forms for its orthogonal group is a polynomial algebra, then the ring of modular forms for its unitary group is also a polynomial algebra. We prove that a number of rings of unitary modular forms are freely generated by applying these criteria to Hermitian lattices over the rings of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for $d=-1,-2,-3$. As a byproduct, our modular groups provide many explicit examples of finite-covolume reflection groups acting on complex hyperbolic space.

On weak Jacobi forms of rank two

We study a ring of weak Jacobi forms indexed by integral lattices of rank two. We find an explicit finite set of generators of this ring and give a dimension formula for weak Jacobi forms of rank two lattice index.
