Explicit Brauer-Manin obstructions on plane quartics

We describe a method to show a plane quartic over a number field has no rational points. The method can be adapted to show that a curve does not have divisors of degree 1 or 2 and can be generalized to arbitrary smooth projective curves. Our approach significantly improves on the applicability over previous 2-cover descent methods by not requiring the computation of the full $S$-unit group of the étale algebras involved. We illustrate the practicality with several examples, including examples where we determine plane quartics to be of index 2 or 4 when the maximum local index is strictly smaller.

Adelic Mordell-Lang and the Brauer-Manin obstruction

Let $X$ be a closed subvariety of an abelian variety $A$ over a global function field $k$ such that the base change of $A$ to an algebraic closure does not have any positive dimensional isotrivial quotient. We prove that every adelic point on $X$ which is the limit of a sequence of $k$-rational points on $A$ is a limit of $k$-rational points on $X$. Assuming finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$, this implies that the rational points on $X$ are dense in the Brauer set of $X$. Similar results are obtained over totally imaginary number fields, conditionally on an adelic Mordell-Lang conjecture.

Quartic del Pezzo surfaces without quadratic points

Previous work of the authors showed that every quartic del Pezzo surface over a number field has index dividing $2$ (i.e., has a closed point of degree $2$ modulo $4$),, and asked whether such surfaces always have a closed point of degree $2$. We resolve this by constructing infinitely many quartic del Pezzo surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ without degree $2$ points. These are the first examples of smooth intersections of two quadrics with index strictly less than the minimal degree of a closed point.

Galois invariants of finite abelian descent and Brauer sets

For a variety over a global field, one can consider subsets of the set of adelic points of the variety cut out by finite abelian descent or Brauer-Manin obstructions. Given a Galois extension of the ground field one can consider similar sets over the extension and take Galois invariants. In this paper, we study under which circumstances the Galois invariants recover the obstruction sets over the ground field. As an application of our results, we study finite abelian descent and Brauer-Manin obstructions for isotrivial curves over function fields and extend results obtained by the first and last authors for constant curves to the isotrivial case.

Weak approximation versus the Hasse principle for subvarieties of abelian varieties

For varieties over global fields, weak approximation in the space of adelic points can fail. For a subvariety of an abelian variety one expects this failure is always explained by a finite descent obstruction, in the sense that the rational points should be dense in the set of (modified) adelic points surviving finite descent. We show that this follows from the a priori weaker assumption that finite descent is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points. We also prove a similar statement for the obstruction coming from the Mordell-Weil sieve.

Degrees of points on varieties over Henselian fields

Let $W/K$ be a nonempty scheme over the field of fractions of a Henselian local ring $R$. A result of Gabber, Liu and Lorenzini shows that the GCD of the set of degrees of closed points on $W$ (which is called the index of $W/K$) can be computed from data pertaining only to the special fiber of a proper regular model of $W$ over $R$. We show that the entire set of degrees of closed points on $W$ can be computed from data pertaining only to the special fiber, provided the special fiber is a strict normal crossings divisor. As a consequence we obtain an algorithm to compute the degree set of any smooth curve over a Henselian field with finite or algebraically closed residue field. Using this we show that degree sets of curves over such fields can be dramatically different than degree sets of curves over finitely generated fields. For example, while the degree set of a curve over a finitely generated field contains all sufficiently large multiples of the index, there are curves over $p$-adic fields with index $1$ whose degree set excludes all integers that are coprime to $6$.

Etale descent obstruction and anabelian geometry of curves over finite fields

Let $C$ and $D$ be smooth, proper and geometrically integral curves over a finite field $F$. Any morphism from $D$ to $C$ induces a morphism of their \'etale fundamental groups. The anabelian philosophy proposed by Grothendieck suggests that, when $C$ has genus at least $2$, all open homomorphisms between the \'etale fundamental groups should arise in this way from a nonconstant morphism of curves. We relate this expectation to the arithmetic of the curve $C_K$ over the global function field $K = F(D)$. Specifically, we show that there is a bijection between the set of conjugacy classes of well-behaved morphism of fundamental groups and locally constant adelic points of $C_K$ that survive \'etale descent. We use this to provide further evidence for the anabelian conjecture by relating it to another recent conjecture by Sutherland and the second author.

Brauer-Manin obstructions on hyperelliptic curves

We describe a practical algorithm for computing Brauer-Manin obstructions to the existence of rational points on hyperelliptic curves defined over number fields. This offers advantages over descent based methods in that its correctness does not rely on rigorous class and unit group computations of large degree number fields. We report on experiments showing it to be a very effective tool for deciding existence of rational points: Among a random samples of curves over the rational numbers of genus at least $5$ we were able to decide existence of rational points for over $99\%$ of curves. We also demonstrate its effectiveness for high genus curves, giving an example of a genus $50$ hyperelliptic curve with a Brauer-Manin obstrution to the Hasse Principle. The main theoretical development allowing for this algorithm is an extension of the descent theory for abelian torsors to a framework of torsors with restricted ramification.

The local-global principle for divisibility in CM elliptic curves

We consider the local-global principle for divisibility in the Mordell-Weil group of a CM elliptic curve defined over a number field. For each prime $p$ we give sharp lower bounds on the degree $d$ of a number field over which there exists a CM elliptic curve which gives a counterexample to the local-global principle for divisibility by a power of $p$. As a corollary we deduce that there are at most finitely many elliptic curves (with or without CM) which are counterexamples with $p > 2d+1$. We also deduce that the local-global principle for divisibility by powers of $7$ holds over quadratic fields.

The Brauer-Manin obstruction for constant curves over global function fields

Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field and $C,D$ smooth, geometrically irreducible proper curves over $\mathbb{F}$ and set $K = \mathbb{F}(D)$. We consider Brauer-Manin and abelian descent obstructions to the existence of rational points and to weak approximation for the curve $C \otimes_\mathbb{F} K$. In particular, we show that Brauer-Manin is the only obstruction to weak approximation and the Hasse principle in the case that the genus of $D$ is less than that of $C$. We also show that we can identify the points corresponding to non-constant maps $D \to C$ using Frobenius descents.

Most binary forms come from a pencil of quadrics

A pair of symmetric bilinear forms A and B determine a binary form $f(x,y) = disc(Ax-By)$. We prove that the question of whether a given binary form can be written in this way as a discriminant form generically satisfies a local-global principle and deduce from this that most binary forms over $\mathbf{Q}$ are discriminant forms. This is related to the arithmetic of the hyperelliptic curve $z^2 = f(x,y)$. Analogous results for non-hyperelliptic curves are also given.

Generalized Jacobians and explicit descents

We develop a cohomological description of various explicit descents in terms of generalized Jacobians, generalizing the known description for hyperelliptic curves. Specifically, given an integer $n$ dividing the degree of some reduced effective divisor $\mathfrak{m}$ on a curve $C$, we show that multiplication by $n$ on the generalized Jacobian $J_\frak{m}$ factors through an isogeny $φ:A_{\mathfrak{m}} \rightarrow J_{\mathfrak{m}}$ whose kernel is naturally the dual of the Galois module $(\operatorname{Pic}(C_{\overline{k}})/\mathfrak{m})[n]$. By geometric class field theory, this corresponds to an abelian covering of $C_{\overline{k}} := C \times_{\operatorname{Spec}{k}} \operatorname{Spec}(\overline{k})$ of exponent $n$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{m}$. The $n$-coverings of $C$ parameterized by explicit descents are the maximal unramified subcoverings of the $k$-forms of this ramified covering. We present applications of this to the computation of Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobians.

Three-dimensional connected groups of automorphisms of toroidal circle planes

We contribute to the classification of toroidal circle planes and flat Minkowski planes possessing three-dimensional connected groups of automorphisms. When such a group is an almost simple Lie group, we show that it is isomorphic to $\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. Using this result, we describe a framework for the full classification based on the action of the group on the point set.

Degree and the Brauer-Manin obstruction

Let X be a smooth variety over a number field k embedded as a degree d subvariety of $\mathbb{P}^n$ and suppose that X is a counterexample to the Hasse principle explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We consider the question of whether the obstruction is given by the d-primary subgroup of the Brauer group, which would have both theoretic and algorithmic implications. We prove that this question has a positive answer in the case of torsors under abelian varieties, Kummer surfaces and (conditional on finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups) bielliptic surfaces. For Kummer varieties we show that the obstruction is already given by the 2-primary torsion. We construct a conic bundle over an elliptic curve that shows that, in general, the answer is no.

No transcendental Brauer-Manin obstructions on abelian varieties

Suppose $X$ is a torsor under an abelian variety $A$ over a number field. We show that any adelic point of $X$ that is orthogonal to the algebraic Brauer group of $X$ is orthogonal to the whole Brauer group of $X$. We also show that if there is a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of rational points on $X$, then there is already an obstruction coming from the locally constant Brauer classes. These results had previously been established under the assumption that $A$ has finite Tate-Shafarevich group. Our results are unconditional.
