Photoionization of Rb$^{2+}$ ions in the valence energy region 37 eV -- 44 eV

Absolute photoionization cross sections for the Rb$^{2+}$ ion were recently measured at high resolution over the energy range 37.31 eV -- 44.08~eV, with autoionizing Rydberg resonance series identified, using the photon-ion merged-beam setup at the Advanced Light Source (\textsc{als}) in Berkeley {(Macaluso D A et. al. J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. {\bf 49} (2016) 235002; {\bf 50} (2017) 119501)}. Detailed photon-energy scans taken at 13.5 $\pm$ 2.5 meV bandwidth illustrated multiple Rydberg resonance series associated with the ground and metastable states. Here we present theoretical cross section results obtained using the Dirac-Coulomb $R$-matrix approximation with a detailed analysis of the resonances. The calculations were performed for the $3d^{10}4s^2 4p^5 \; {^2}{\rm P^o}_{J}$, $J=\frac{3}{2}$ ground state and the corresponding $3d^{10}4s^2 4p^5 \; {^2}{\rm P^o}_{J}$, $J=\frac{1}{2}$ metastable level. Results from the large-scale calculations are benchmarked against the \textsc{als} high-resolution measurements and reproduce the dominant resonance features in the spectra, providing confidence in the theoretical work for astrophysical applications.

Photoionisation of Cl$^+$ from the $3s^23p^4\;^3P_{2,1,0}$ and the$3s^23p^4\;^1D_2, ^1S_0$ states in the energy range 19 - 28 eV

Absolute photoionisation cross sections for the Cl$^+$ ion in its ground and the metastable states; $3s^2 3p^4\; ^3P_{2,1,0}$, and $3s^2 3p^4\; ^1D_2,\; ^1S_0$, were measured recently at the Advanced Light Source ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using the merged beams photon-ion technique at an photon energy resolution of 15 meV in the energy range 19 -- 28 eV. These measurements are compared with large-scale Dirac Coulomb {\it R}-matrix calculations in the same energy range. Photoionisation of this sulphur-like chlorine ion is characterized by multiple Rydberg series of autoionizing resonances superimposed on a direct photoionisation continuum. A wealth of resonance features observed in the experimental spectra are spectroscopically assigned and their resonance parameters tabulated and compared with the recent measurements. Metastable fractions in the parent ion beam are determined from the present study. Theoretical resonance energies and quantum defects of the prominent Rydberg series $3s^2 3p^3 nd$, identified in the spectra as $3p\rightarrow nd$ transitions are compared with the available measurements made on this element. Weaker Rydberg series $3s^2 3p^3 ns$, identified as $3p \rightarrow ns$ transitions and window resonances $3s3p^4 (^4P)np$ features, due to $3s \rightarrow np$ transitions are also found in the spectra.

Photoionization of the valence shells of the neutral tungsten atom

Results from large-scale theoretical cross section calculations for the total photoionization of the 4f, 5s, 5p and 6s orbitals of the neutral tungsten atom using the Dirac Coulomb R-matrix approximation (DARC: Dirac-Atomic R-matrix codes) are presented. Comparisons are made with previous theoretical methods and prior experimental measurements. In previous experiments a time-resolved dual laser approach was employed for the photo-absorption of metal vapours and photo-absorption measurements on tungsten in a solid, using synchrotron radiation. The lowest ground state level of neutral tungsten is $\rm 5p^6 5d^4 6s^2 \; {^5}D_{\it J}$, with $\it J$=0, and requires only a single dipole matrix for photoionization. To make a meaningful comparison with existing experimental measurements, we statistically average the large-scale theoretical PI cross sections from the levels associated with the ground state $\rm 5p^6 5d^4 6s^2 \; {^5}D_{\it J}[{\it J}=0,1,2,3,4]$ levels and the $\rm 5d^56s \; ^7S_3$ excited metastable level. As the experiments have a self-evident metastable component in their ground state measurement, averaging over the initial levels allows for a more consistent and realistic comparison to be made. In the wider context, the absence of many detailed electron-impact excitation (EIE) experiments for tungsten and its multi-charged ion stages allows current photoionization measurements and theory to provide a road-map for future electron-impact excitation, ionization and di-electronic cross section calculations by identifying the dominant resonance structure and features across an energy range of hundreds of eV.
