The Farey tree and embeddings of lens spaces and rational balls in $\mathbb{CP}^2$

Motivated by a conjecture of Kollár, we study embeddings of multiple rational homology balls in $\mathbb{CP}^2$. To each node of the Farey tree, we associate such an embedding of three rational homology balls with lens space boundary, extending earlier work of the second author and of Lisca and Parma, using a recursive Kirby calculus argument. We also give further explicit constructions of embeddings of triples of rational homology balls into homotopy $\mathbb{CP}^2$s.

Alternating links, rational balls, and cube tilings

When does the double cover of the three-sphere branched along an alternating link bound a rational homology ball? Heegaard Floer homology generates a necessary condition for it to bound: the link's chessboard lattice must be cubiquitous, implying that its normalized determinant is less than or equal to one. We conjecture that the converse holds and prove it when the normalized determinant equals one. The proof involves flows on planar graphs and the Hajós-Minkowski theorem that a lattice tiling of Euclidean space by cubes contains a pair of cubes which touch along an entire facet. We extend our main results to the study of ribbon cobordism and ribbon concordance.

An algorithm to find ribbon disks for alternating knots

We describe an algorithm to find ribbon disks for alternating knots, and the results of a computer implementation of this algorithm. The algorithm is underlain by a slice link obstruction coming from Donaldson's diagonalisation theorem. It successfully finds ribbon disks for slice two-bridge knots and for the connected sum of any alternating knot with its reverse mirror, as well as for 662,903 prime alternating knots of 21 or fewer crossings. We also identify some examples of ribbon alternating knots for which the algorithm fails to find ribbon disks, though a related search identifies all such examples known. Combining these searches with known obstructions, we resolve the sliceness of all but 3,276 of the over 1.2 billion prime alternating knots with 21 or fewer crossings.

Disoriented homology and double branched covers

This paper provides a convenient and practical method to compute the homology and intersection pairing of a branched double cover of the 4-ball. To projections of links in the 3-ball, and to projections of surfaces in the 4-ball into the boundary sphere, we associate a sequence of homology groups, called the disoriented homology. We show that the disoriented homology is isomorphic to the homology of the double branched cover of the link or surface. We define a pairing on the first disoriented homology group of a surface and show that this is equal to the intersection pairing of the branched cover. These results generalize work of Gordon and Litherland, for embedded surfaces in the 3-sphere, to arbitrary surfaces in the 4-ball. We also give a generalization of the signature formula of Gordon-Litherland to the general setting. Our results are underpinned by a theorem describing a handle decomposition of the branched double cover of a codimension-2 submanifold in the $n$-ball, which generalizes previous results of Akbulut-Kirby and others.

Knots and 4-manifolds

These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.

Equivariant embeddings of rational homology balls

We generalise theorems of Khodorovskiy and Park-Park-Shin, and give new topological proofs of those theorems, using embedded surfaces in the 4-ball and branched double covers. These theorems exhibit smooth codimension-zero embeddings of certain rational homology balls bounded by lens spaces.

Immersed disks, slicing numbers and concordance unknotting numbers

We study three knot invariants related to smoothly immersed disks in the four-ball. These are the four-ball crossing number, which is the minimal number of normal double points of such a disk bounded by a given knot; the slicing number, which is the minimal number of crossing changes to a slice knot; and the concordance unknotting number, which is the minimal unknotting number in a smooth concordance class. Using Heegaard Floer homology we obtain bounds that can be used to determine two of these invariants for all prime knots with crossing number ten or less, and to determine the concordance unknotting number for all but thirteen of these knots. As a further application we obtain some new bounds on Gordian distance between torus knots. We also give a strengthened version of Ozsvath and Szabo's obstruction to unknotting number one.

Unlinking information from 4-manifolds

We generalise theorems of Cochran-Lickorish and Owens-Strle to the case of links with more than one component. This enables the use of linking forms on double branched covers, Heegaard Floer correction terms, and Donaldson's diagonalisation theorem to complete the table of unlinking numbers for nonsplit prime links with crossing number nine or less.

Signatures, Heegaard Floer correction terms and quasi-alternating links

Turaev showed that there is a well-defined map assigning to an oriented link L in the three-sphere a Spin structure t_0 on Sigma(L), the 2-fold cover of S^3 branched along L. We prove, generalizing results of Manolescu-Owens and Donald-Owens, that for an oriented quasi-alternating link L the signature of L equals minus four times the Heegaard Floer correction term of (Sigma(L), t_0).

On subsets of $S^n$ whose $(n+1)$-point subsets are contained in open hemisheres

We investigate the nature of subsets of spheres which satisfy a tameness condition associated with the Bieri-Groves conjecture on cohomological finiteness conditions for metabelian groups. We find that there is a natural polyhedrality in a crucial special case. In the case of the two dimensional sphere we establish a strong polyhedrality condition for certain open sets which are maximal subject to satisfying the tameness condition that subsets of three or fewer points are contained in open hemispheres. Many examples are included.

Concordance groups of links

We define a notion of concordance based on Euler characteristic, and show that it gives rise to a concordance group of links in the three-sphere, which has the concordance group of knots as a direct summand with infinitely generated complement. We consider variants of this using oriented and nonoriented surfaces as well as smooth and locally flat embeddings.

Dehn surgeries and negative-definite four-manifolds

Given a knot K in the three-sphere, we address the question: which Dehn surgeries on K bound negative-definite four-manifolds? We show that the answer depends on a number m(K), which is a smooth concordance invariant. We study the properties of this invariant, and compute it for torus knots.

On slicing invariants of knots

The slicing number of a knot, $u_s(K)$, is the minimum number of crossing changes required to convert $K$ to a slice knot. This invariant is bounded above by the unknotting number and below by the slice genus $g_s(K)$. We show that for many knots, previous bounds on unknotting number obtained by Ozsvath and Szabo and by the author in fact give bounds on the slicing number. Livingston defined another invariant $U_s(K)$ which takes into account signs of crossings changed to get a slice knot, and which is bounded above by the slicing number and below by the slice genus. We exhibit an infinite family of knots $K_n$ with slice genus $n$ and Livingston invariant greater than $n$. Our bounds are based on restrictions (using Donaldson's diagonalisation theorem or Heegaard Floer homology) on the intersection forms of four-manifolds bounded by the double branched cover of a knot.

A characterisation of the Z^n + Z(δ) lattice and definite nonunimodular intersection forms

We prove a generalisation of Elkies' theorem to nonunimodular definite forms (and lattices). Combined with inequalities of Froyshov and of Ozsvath and Szabo, this gives a simple test of whether a rational homology 3-sphere may bound a definite four-manifold. As an example we show that small positive surgeries on torus knots do not bound negative-definite four-manifolds.

A concordance invariant from the Floer homology of double branched covers

Ozsvath and Szabo defined an analog of the Froyshov invariant in the form of a correction term for the grading in Heegaard Floer homology. Applying this to the double cover of the 3-sphere branched over a knot K, we obtain an invariant delta of knot concordance. We show that delta is determined by the signature for alternating knots and knots with up to nine crossings, and conjecture a similar relation for all H-thin knots. We also use delta to prove that for all knots K with tau(K)>0, the positive untwisted double of K is not smoothly slice.

Unknotting information from Heegaard Floer homology

We use Heegaard Floer homology to obtain bounds on unknotting numbers. This is a generalisation of Ozsvath and Szabo's obstruction to unknotting number one. We determine the unknotting numbers of 9_10, 9_13, 9_35, 9_38, 10_53, 10_101 and 10_120; this completes the table of unknotting numbers for prime knots with crossing number nine or less. Our obstruction uses a refined version of Montesinos' theorem which gives a Dehn surgery description of the branched double cover of a knot.

A characterisation of the n<1> + <3> form and applications to rational homology spheres

We conjecture two generalisations of Elkies' theorem on unimodular quadratic forms to non-unimodular forms. We give some evidence for these conjectures including a result for determinant 3. These conjectures, when combined with results of Froyshov and of Ozsvath and Szabo, would give a simple test of whether a rational homology 3-sphere may bound a negative-definite four-manifold. We verify some predictions using Donaldson's theorem. Based on this we compute the four-ball genus of some Montesinos knots.
