Backward propagation of warped product structures and asymptotically conical shrinkers

We establish sufficient conditions which ensure that a locally-warped product structure propagates backward in time under the Ricci flow. As an application, we prove that if an asymptotically conical gradient shrinking soliton is asymptotic to a cone whose cross-section is a product of Einstein manifolds, the soliton must itself be a multiply-warped product over the same manifolds.

Ricci flows which terminate in cones

We prove that a complete solution to the Ricci flow on $M\times [-T, 0)$ which has quadratic curvature decay on some end of $M$ and converges locally smoothly to the end of a cone on that neighborhood as $t\nearrow 0$ must be a gradient shrinking soliton.

A uniqueness theorem for asymptotically cylindrical shrinking Ricci solitons

We prove that a shrinking gradient Ricci soliton which agrees to infinite order at spatial infinity with one of the standard cylindrical metrics on $S^k\times \RR^{n-k}$ for $k\geq 2$ along some end must be isometric to the cylinder on that end. When the underlying manifold is complete, it must be globally isometric either to the cylinder or (when $k=n-1$) to its $\ZZ_2$-quotient.

On the maximal rate of convergence under the Ricci flow

We estimate from above the rate at which a solution to the normalized Ricci flow on a closed manifold may converge to a limit soliton. Our main result implies that any solution which converges modulo diffeomorphisms to a soliton faster than any fixed exponential rate must itself be self-similar.

The full holonomy group under the Ricci flow

We give a short, direct proof that the full holonomy group of a solution to the Ricci flow is invariant up to isomorphism using the invariance of the reduced holonomy under the flow.

Isometries of asymptotically conical shrinking Ricci solitons

We show that if a shrinking soliton is asymptotic to a cone along an end then the isometry group of the cross-section of the cone embeds in the isometry group of the end of the shrinker. We also provide sufficient conditions for the isometries of the end to extend to the entire shrinker.

An energy approach to uniqueness for higher-order geometric flows

We demonstrate that the uniqueness of solutions to a broad class of parabolic geometric evolution equations can be proven via a direct and essentially classical energy argument which avoids the DeTurck trick entirely. Previously, we have used a variation of this technique to give an alternative proof and slight extension to the basic uniqueness result for complete solutions to the Ricci flow of uniformly bounded curvature. Here we extend this approach to curvature flows of all orders, including the $L^2$-curvature flow and a class of quasilinear higher-order flows related to the obstruction tensor. We also detail its application to the fully nonlinear cross-curvature flow.

A local curvature estimate for the Ricci flow

We show that the norm of the Riemann curvature tensor of any smooth solution to the Ricci flow can be explicitly estimated in terms of its initial values on a given ball, a local uniform bound on the Ricci tensor, and the elapsed time. This provides a new, direct proof of a result of Sesum, which asserts that the curvature of a solution on a compact manifold cannot blow up while the Ricci curvature remains bounded, and extends its conclusions to the noncompact setting. We also prove that the Ricci curvature must blow up at least linearly along a subsequence at a finite time singularity.

Short-time persistence of bounded curvature under the Ricci flow

We use a first-order energy quantity to prove a strengthened statement of uniqueness for the Ricci flow. One consequence of this statement is that if a complete solution on a noncompact manifold has uniformly bounded Ricci curvature, then its sectional curvature will remain bounded for a short time if it is bounded initially. In other words, the Weyl curvature tensor of a complete solution to the Ricci flow cannot become unbounded instantaneously if the Ricci curvature remains bounded.

A short proof of backward uniqueness for some geometric evolution equations

We give a simple, direct proof of the backward uniqueness of solutions to a class of second-order geometric evolution equations including the Ricci and cross-curvature flows. The proof, based on a classical argument of Agmon-Nirenberg, uses the logarithmic convexity of a certain energy quantity in the place of Carleman inequalities. We also demonstrate the applicability of the technique to the $L^2$-curvature flow and other higher-order equations.

Rigidity of asymptotically conical shrinking gradient Ricci solitons

We show that if two gradient Ricci solitons are asymptotic along some end of each to the same regular cone, then the soliton metrics must be isometric on some neighborhoods of infinity of these ends. Our theorem imposes no restrictions on the behavior of the metrics off of the ends in question and in particular does not require their geodesic completeness. As an application, we prove that the only complete connected gradient shrinking Ricci soliton asymptotic to a rotationally symmetric cone is the Gaussian soliton on R^n.

Time-analyticity of solutions to the Ricci flow

In this paper, we prove that if $g(t)$ is a smooth, complete solution to the Ricci flow of uniformly bounded curvature on $M\times[0, Ω]$, then the correspondence $t\mapsto g(t)$ is real-analytic at each $t_0\in (0, Ω)$. The analyticity is a consequence of classical Bernstein-type estimates on the temporal and spatial derivatives of the curvature tensor, which we further use to show that, under the above global hypotheses, for any $x_0\in M$ and $t_0\in (0, Ω)$, there exist local coordinates $x = x^i$ on a neighborhood $U\subset M$ of $x_0$ in which the representation $g_{ij}(x, t)$ of the metric is real-analytic in both $x$ and $t$ on some cylinder $U\times (t_0 -ε, t_0 + ε)$.

An energy approach to the problem of uniqueness for the Ricci flow

We revisit the problem of uniqueness for the Ricci flow and give a short, direct proof, based on the consideration of a simple energy quantity, of Hamilton/Chen-Zhu's theorem on the uniqueness of complete solutions of uniformly bounded curvature. With a variation of this quantity and technique, we further prove a uniqueness theorem for subsolutions to a general class of mixed differential inequalities which implies an extension of Chen-Zhu's result to solutions (and initial data) of potentially unbounded curvature.

Backwards uniqueness of the Ricci flow

In this paper, we prove a unique continuation or ``backwards-uniqueness'' theorem for solutions to the Ricci flow. A particular consequence is that the isometry group of a solution cannot expand within the lifetime of the solution.

Local gradient estimates of p-harmonic functions, 1/H-flow, and an entropy formula

In the first part of this paper, we prove local interior and boundary gradient estimates for p-harmonic functions on general Riemannian manifolds. With these estimates, following the strategy in recent work of R. Moser, we prove an existence theorem for weak solutions to the level set formulation of the 1/H (inverse mean curvature) flow for hypersurfaces in ambient manifolds satisfying a sharp volume growth assumption. In the second part of this paper, we consider two parabolic analogues of the p-Laplace equation and prove sharp Li-Yau type gradient estimates for positive solutions to these equations on manifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature. For one of these equations, we also prove an entropy monotonicity formula generalizing an earlier such formula of the second author for the linear heat equation. As an application of this formula, we show that a complete Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature and sharp L^p-logarithmic Sobolev inequality must be isometric to Euclidean space.

On rotationally invariant shrinking gradient Ricci solitons

In this paper we study the gradient Ricci shrinking soliton equation on rotationally symmetric manifolds of dimension three and higher and prove that the only complete examples of such metrics on $S^n$, $\R{n}$ and $\R{}\times S^{n-1}$ are, respectively, the round, flat, and standard cylindrical metrics.
