metasnf: Meta Clustering with Similarity Network Fusion in R

metasnf is an R package that enables users to apply meta clustering, a method for efficiently searching a broad space of cluster solutions by clustering the solutions themselves, to clustering workflows based on similarity network fusion (SNF). SNF is a multi-modal data integration algorithm commonly used for biomedical subtype discovery. The package also contains functions to assist with cluster visualization, characterization, and validation. This package can help researchers identify SNF-derived cluster solutions that are guided by context-specific utility over context-agnostic measures of quality.

The K2-138 System: A Near-Resonant Chain of Five Sub-Neptune Planets Discovered by Citizen Scientists

K2-138 is a moderately bright (V = 12.2, K = 10.3) main sequence K-star observed in Campaign 12 of the NASA K2 mission. It hosts five small (1.6-3.3R_Earth) transiting planets in a compact architecture. The periods of the five planets are 2.35 d, 3.56 d, 5.40 d, 8.26 d, and 12.76 d, forming an unbroken chain of near 3:2 resonances. Although we do not detect the predicted 2-5 minute transit timing variations with the K2 timing precision, they may be observable by higher cadence observations with, for example, Spitzer or CHEOPS. The planets are amenable to mass measurement by precision radial velocity measurements, and therefore K2-138 could represent a new benchmark systems for comparing radial velocity and TTV masses. K2-138 is the first exoplanet discovery by citizen scientists participating in the Exoplanet Explorers project on the Zooniverse platform.

Manifest causality in quantum field theory with sources and detectors

We introduce a way to compute scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory including the effects of particle production and detection. Our amplitudes are manifestly causal, by which we mean that the source and detector are always linked by a connected chain of retarded propagators. We show how these amplitudes can be derived from a path integral, using the Schwinger-Keldysh "in-in" formalism. Focussing on phi-cubed theory, we confirm that our approach agrees with the standard S-matrix approach in the case of positive energy plane-wave scattering.

Extracting Higgs boson couplings using a jet veto

We show that the Higgs boson's effective couplings to gluons and to weak vector bosons can be extracted simultaneously from an analysis of Higgs plus dijet events by studying the dependence of the observed cross-section upon a third-jet veto.

Double Diffractive Higgs and Di-photon Production at the Tevatron and LHC

We use the POMWIG Monte Carlo generator to predict the cross-sections for double diffractive higgs and di-photon production at the Tevatron and LHC. We find that the higgs production cross-section is too small to be observable at Tevatron energies, and even at the LHC observation would be difficult. Double diffractive di-photon production, however, should be observable within one year of Tevatron Run II.

Hard Colour Singlet Exchange at the Tevatron

We have performed a detailed phenomenological investigation of the hard colour singlet exchange process which is observed at the Tevatron in events which have a large rapidity gap between outgoing jets. We include the effects of multiple interactions to obtain a prediction for the gap survival factor. Comparing the data on the fraction of gap events with the prediction from BFKL pomeron exchange we find agreement provided that a constant value of alpha_s is used in the BFKL calculation. Moreover, the value of alpha_s is in line with that extracted from measurements made at HERA.
