Aarmed with Data: Bumps, Outflows, and Disk-like Emission in TDE 2025aarm

The origin of the optical emission in tidal disruption events (TDEs) remains one of the major outstanding questions in the field, in part due to the limited number of nearby events with high-cadence monitoring to track their evolving photometric and spectroscopic properties. We present multi-wavelength observations of the nearby ($z=0.01368$) TDE\,2025aarm, including near-daily spectroscopic coverage prior to the optical peak. Its proximity makes it one of the brightest TDEs discovered, reaching a peak magnitude of $m_r\sim15.5$ ($M_r\sim-18$). The light curve deviates from a smooth evolution, exhibiting multiple rebrightening episodes visible in both the individual filter light curves and the bolometric luminosity. Blackbody modelling reveals that these rebrightenings are associated with an increase in temperature of $> 5,000-10,000$\,K, while the inferred photospheric radius remains approximately constant. Simultaneously, the H$\alpha$ line not only increases in blueshift but also broadens, suggesting a link between the continuum rebrightenings to changes in the kinematics of the line-forming gas. We identify a persistent absorption component at $\sim-3900$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ in multiple Balmer lines, providing further evidence for outflowing material. The H$\alpha$ profile also exhibits excess flux compared to a Gaussian on both sides of the line, inconsistent with simple scattering-dominated outflow models. Disk-profile modelling provides evidence for the emergence of a disk-like component least $\sim20$ days after peak, with substantial changes in the disk properties between $\sim50$ and 60 days. These observations highlight the complexity of TDE emission processes and demonstrate how dense multi-wavelength monitoring can disentangle the roles of accretion, reprocessing, and outflows in shaping TDE emission.

AT 2016blu: Accretion-Powered Outbursts in a Luminous Blue Variable and Compact Object Binary

We present the first X-ray detection of the supernova (SN) impostor AT 2016blu in NGC 4559. AT 2016blu exhibited 27 detected quasiperiodic (~113 day) outbursts between 2012 and June 2026, presumably triggered by periastron passages in an eccentric binary system in which the primary is a $\gtrsim 33~M_{\odot}$ luminous blue variable (LBV). AT 2016blu was serendipitously observed by Chandra in 2001-2002, prior to its first documented outburst in 2012, but the stacked archival data show no X-ray detection. We monitored the source's visual-wavelength variability around its predicted outburst time and triggered a Chandra Target of Opportunity program in March 2026, obtaining observations with detections over five closely spaced epochs. These data indicate an X-ray luminosity of $\log L_{\rm X} \approx 38.64 \pm 0.11$~erg~s$^{-1}$ and an accretion rate of $\dot{M} \gtrsim 8\times10^{-8}~M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$, consistent with the presence of a compact companion. We therefore conclude that AT 2016blu is the first known case of an LBV SN impostor whose outbursts are driven by intermittent accretion onto a compact object. Given that the system consists of a massive star and a compact companion, AT 2016blu is a high-mass X-ray binary, similar to SN 2010da, although the donor star in SN 2010da is a red supergiant.

A JWST/MIRI Study of Dust in a Sample of Normal Type IIP Core Collapse Supernovae

Core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are invoked as major dust producers in the early Universe, yet the amount of dust they form, the timescale over which it grows, and the physical conditions that regulate the yield remain uncertain. We present a detailed JWST/MIRI mid-infrared (MIR) imaging census of 11 nearby Type IIP CCSNe spanning $\sim$1-7 yr after explosion, investigating dust emission across the different phases of their evolution. The spectral energy distributions show a coherent evolution from hot ($\sim$1500 K), 5-8 $\mu$m emission at $\sim$400 d to prominent 10 and 18 $\mu$m emission features at later epochs ($\sim$600-2500 d). The cool dust temperatures range from $\sim120$ to $250$ K and dust masses from $\sim10^{-4}$ to $10^{-2} M_{\odot}$. The current sample shows no statistically significant correlation between measured dust mass and peak luminosity, plateau duration, or explosion energy. SNe with early high ionization features, indicative of confined CSM, are often among the dust-rich objects in the sample. The measured 1-7 yr dust yields are insufficient to account for dust in typical $z > 6$ galaxies, but support a role for CCSNe as producers of seed dust for subsequent grain growth.

No Evidence for Nearby Circumstellar Material in the Type Ia Supernova 2025rbs

We present a high-resolution spectral time series of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2025rbs discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC 7331. The Automated Planet Finder (APF) at Lick Observatory and the MAROON-X/IGRINS-2 at Gemini North were used to obtain echelle spectra between -5 and 15 days with respect to the epoch of maximum light. Several unsaturated NaID absorption components along the line of sight are identified, but there is no evidence of time variance in any of them. We measure the equivalent width of the observed diffuse interstellar band around 5780 A and constrain the extinction along the line of sight to SN 2025rbs as $A_V = 0.64\,\pm\,0.32$ mag, corresponding to a moderate reddening of $E(B-V) = 0.21\,\pm\,0.10$ mag (assuming $R_\mathrm{V}$ = 3.1). The observed Ca II H & K interstellar absorption roughly traces NaID in velocity space, suggesting a common origin. Quantitative comparisons between the column densities of Na and Ca gas in these host clouds ($N_{NaID}$ / $N_{Ca II}$ of order unity) argue against their origin in the Galactic halo gas and instead support absorption due to the interstellar gas of NGC 7331. Time invariance of all the observed absorption features suggests a lack of nearby circumstellar material ($\lesssim$ 10$^{16}$ cm) around the progenitor system of SN 2025rbs. This supports a progenitor scenario for SN 2025rbs with minimal ambient circumstellar gas, consistent with a double-degenerate CO white dwarf binary system.

Ultraviolet to Infrared Spectroscopy of the Type Ibn SN 2023tsz Suggests a Lower-mass Progenitor

Type Ibn supernovae are stripped-envelope explosions whose spectra indicate interaction with dense, helium-rich and hydrogen-poor circumstellar material (CSM), making them important probes of late-stage mass loss and progenitor stripping. We present extensive ultraviolet-to-near-infrared spectrophotometry of the Type Ibn SN 2023tsz, including two epochs of HST/STIS ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy and ground-based optical and near-infrared follow-up observations. The spectra are dominated by intermediate-width emission lines at all phases after maximum light, suggesting that much of the luminosity originates in a cold dense shell (CDS) formed by interaction between the ejecta and CSM. We compare the observations to one-dimensional non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium radiative-transfer models of a helium-star explosion with a mass of $4 M_{\odot}$ at the onset of helium burning. The models reproduce the strong optical and near-infrared He I lines and require an added X-ray irradiation field to match the highly ionized UV features. The spectra are best reproduced by models with an X-ray irradiation power of $L_X \approx 10^8 L_{\odot}$, with the preferred models favoring CDS radii of order $(1.5$--$2) \times 10^{15}$ cm, velocities of $\sim 5 \times 10^7$ cm s$^{-1}$, and interaction powers of a few times $10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. In the optical, the preferred models shift from higher interaction power and smaller radii at early times to lower power and larger radii at later times. These results add to the growing evidence that at least some SNe Ibn arise from lower-mass helium stars whose final evolution is shaped by binary interaction.

Evidence for Asymmetric Ejecta and Circumstellar Material in SN 2023ixf Inferred from Extensive Nebular-phase Observations

We present extensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the nearby Type II supernova (SN II) 2023ixf in the nebular phase from +89 days to +749 days after explosion, supplemented with NIR and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy from the James Webb Space Telescope. The H$\alpha$ emission profile shows complex evolution, with the emergence of high-velocity components consistent with the outer ejecta interacting with extended, low-density circumstellar material (CSM). We find that the H$\alpha$ profile at an intermediate epoch (around +375 d) can be reconstructed by scaling an earlier decay-powered component and a later-phase shock-powered component, which revealed an additional intermediate-width component. This is consistent with the ejecta crashing into the initially aspherical dense CSM that has been swept-up by the forward shock. In the NIR, we find double-peaked emission from Mg I $1.504\ {\rm \mu m}$, Na I $2.206\ {\rm \mu m}$, and [Ni I] $3.12\ {\rm \mu m}$ between +200 d and +374 d, consistent with an asymmetric distribution of Ni-rich material that heats the ejecta inhomogeneously. We posit a disk-like CSM geometry and an ejecta geometry in which at least two large Ni-rich plumes lead to the observed line-profile diversity.

JWST observations of SN 2024abup: First Detection of CO in a broad-lined Type Ic Supernova and Constraints on r-process Nucleosynthesis

SN 2024abup is a nearby broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN Ic-bl) in NGC 0681 at a distance of 23.3 \pm 1.6 Mpc. As energetic explosions of massive stars, SNe Ic-bl are considered a plausible site for rapid-neutron capture nucleosynthesis (r-process) and chemical enrichment from short-lived progenitors. They may also contribute to dust production in the early Universe. We present JWST near- to mid-infrared (NIR+MIR) observations (1-14 micron) of SN Ic-bl 2024abup at +41 days after the V band maximum (+54 days after explosion), the first-ever JWST+MIR observation of a SN Ic-bl along with radio and optical data. Using the spectral synthesis code SUMO, we identify the observed broad IR line features in SN 2024abup and find significant contributions from C, O, Mg, and carbon monoxide (CO) -- the earliest detection of molecules in a core-collapse SN so far. The spectrum shows continuum emission at wavelengths greater than 1.5 micron, which could be explained by dust -- preexisting, newly formed, or a combination-heated by the SN. We do not find compelling evidence for infrared signatures of r-process elements, though our search is hampered by the presence of many broad and blended features from the non-r-process elements. These new observations indicate that SNe Ic-bl could be a contributor to early-universe dust production, and suggest that if r-process elements are produced, revealing their presence from spectra requires very high-quality data and models to disentangle blends.

First Results from the LSST Shadow Survey: The Restless Luminous Blue Variable AT2017des in the Virgo-Cluster Galaxy, NGC4532

The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will start in late-summer 2026, revolutionizing transient astronomy. Here, we present the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) Shadow Survey, which is designed to maximize the science potential of LSST by shadowing LSST observations of local galaxy-cluster fields, producing a nightly cadence of these fields. The Shadow Survey will discover extremely young supernovae (SNe), SN precursors, as well as other explosive transients and exotic phenomena, helping to characterize such transients at unprecedented cadence and depth when combined with LSST. We describe our workflow, pipeline, public data releases, and candidate vetting. As an early result of Shadow, we present the fitful luminous blue variable (LBV) eruptions of AT2017des in the Virgo-Cluster galaxy NGC4532. AT2017des has short-timescale variability (of order 10 days), peaking at around $M_r=-12.5$mag, brighter than normal LBVs, and similar to the more extreme flaring of hot LBVs/SN impostors such as SN2000ch, AT2016blu, and the precursor activity of SN2009ip. Our spectral time-series reveals features typical of these hot LBVs and SN impostors/precursors. Combining our data with long-baseline photometry from additional observatories, we find that the peaks of the outbursts of AT2017des are getting brighter over time, with 2026 peak fluxes being up to 5 times greater than in 2023 and an average brightening of $\sim0.05$ mag yr$^{-1}$. The peaks of AT2017des are more luminous than those of most other LBVs, only being fainter than bright precursors such as SN2009ip, and extreme SN impostors such as AT2016blu. AT2017des may therefore be ``ramping up'' to a terminal explosion.

The Eye of Sauron in SN 2025ngs: a Short-plateau Cousin of SN 1998S with Evidence for a Ring-like Circumstellar Medium

Interacting supernovae probe the twilight years of massive stars, exhibiting signatures of interaction between the supernova ejecta and surrounding material expelled from the progenitor. We present the peculiar interacting supernova, SN\,2025ngs in NGC5961 (37.8 Mpc). This transient toes the line between strongly interacting supernovae (type IIn) and type IIP supernovae. SN 2025ngs presents photometrically as a short-plateau supernova, with a plateau duration, t$_{\mathrm{PT}}^{}\approx70$ days. Interaction features subside within a week post-explosion, consistent with the growing number of flash supernovae, giving way to a short period where a typical IIP spectrum is exhibited. Towards the drop off the plateau, interaction features re-emerge, exhibiting complex H$\alpha$ profiles throughout the rest of the transient evolution. We compare with models of early spectra, finding the abundances generally consistent with a supergiant progenitor with a high mass-loss rate (10$^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$). Early, high-resolution spectra reveal a double-horned H$\alpha$ profile, providing strong evidence for shock interaction with a proximate disk-like circumstellar medium. Spectroscopically, SN 2025ngs closely resembles the luminous SN 1998S, despite photometric differences, with SN 2025ngs having a relatively modest peak magnitude of $M_\mathrm{V}=-17.9$ mag, adding another member to the surprisingly diverse 98S-like group.

BioAlchemy: Distilling Biological Literature into Reasoning-Ready Reinforcement Learning Training Data

Despite the large corpus of biology training text, the impact of reasoning models on biological research generally lags behind math and coding. In this work, we show that biology questions from current large-scale reasoning datasets do not align well with modern research topic distributions in biology, and that this topic imbalance may negatively affect performance. In addition, we find that methods for extracting challenging and verifiable research problems from biology research text are a critical yet underdeveloped ingredient in applying reinforcement learning for better performance on biology research tasks. We introduce BioAlchemy, a pipeline for sourcing a diverse set of verifiable question-and-answer pairs from a scientific corpus of biology research text. We curate BioAlchemy-345K, a training dataset containing over 345K scientific reasoning problems in biology. Then, we demonstrate how aligning our dataset to the topic distribution of modern scientific biology can be used with reinforcement learning to improve reasoning performance. Finally, we present BioAlchemist-8B, which improves over its base reasoning model by 9.12% on biology benchmarks. These results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach for developing stronger scientific reasoning capabilities in biology. Search For a Counterpart to the Subsolar Mass Gravitational Wave Candidate S251112cm

The recent candidate gravitational-wave (GW) alert from a compact object merger involving at least one subsolar mass (SSM) object has prompted questions about their origins. S251112cm is reported by LIGO/Virgo with a false alarm rate of 1 per 6.2 years, nearby luminosity distance $93 \pm 27$ Mpc, and probability of containing a SSM object of 100%. Such a system, if astrophysical, likely did not involve the supersolar neutron stars or black holes invoked to explain kilonovae. One must then also invoke hitherto unobserved and speculative models to produce SSM mergers which may have electromagnetic (EM) counterparts. We introduce a framework which vets and scores candidate counterparts to SSM GW events to inform follow-up in search of any among the zoo of potential EM transients: kilonovae, kilonovae-within-supernovae, super-kilonovae, or AGN flares from binary black hole mergers. We use a suite of telescopes to perform tiling, galaxy-targeted observations, and photometric/spectroscopic follow-up of promising candidates. In near-real time, we ingest candidates reported by the community, including some of the first observations reported by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. We vet and score a total of 456 candidates, including 67 from Rubin, but find no likely counterpart. We nonetheless highlight candidates which demonstrate the ability of our framework to distinguish between different transient types and describe strategies to maximize the chances of detecting a counterpart to the next SSM event. Our framework will be implemented in the forthcoming Multimessenger Tool for Rapid Object Vetting and Examination (TROVE).

An infrared echo from a circumstellar disk in the hydrogen- and helium-poor SN 2024aecx

We present near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of the hydrogen- and helium-poor (Type Ic) supernova (SN) 2024aecx, which displays a strong NIR excess emerging 32 days post peak. SN 2024aecx is a peculiar SN Ic that exhibited luminous shock-cooling emission at early times, suggestive of close-in circumstellar medium (CSM), unexpected for this class of SNe. Its early NIR spectra are typical for a SN Ic but with strong C I absorption features. By $\sim$32 days post peak, the spectra show a strong NIR excess, while maintaining normal optical colors, unprecedented for SNe Ic. We find that the NIR excess is well fit with a single-temperature, optically thin dust model with declining temperature, increasing mass, and roughly constant luminosity over time. The NIR excess appears too promptly for dust to have formed in the SN ejecta, indicating an IR echo from pre-existing dust in the CSM. The IR echo is likely powered by the relatively slowly evolving SN peak light, and not the brief shock cooling emission, as the latter requires unrealistically high CSM densities to explain the observed dust mass. We consider different potential CSM geometries and find that a thick face-on disk with an inner edge of around $5\times 10^{16} \rm \ cm$ can best explain the dust mass and temperature evolution. In this scenario, the SN shock should start interacting with this CSM $440\pm200$ days post explosion. CSM around SN Ic is rare, and follow-up observations of SN 2024aecx will probe the mass-loss process responsible for removing hydrogen and helium from their progenitor star.

A multiwavelength view of the nearby Calcium-Strong Transient SN 2025coe in the X-Ray, Near-Infrared, and Radio Wavebands

Calcium-strong transients (CaSTs) are a subclass of faint and rapidly evolving supernovae (SNe) that exhibit strong calcium features and notably weak oxygen features. The small but growing population of CaSTs exhibits some aspects similar to thermonuclear supernovae but others similar to massive star core-collapse events, leading to intriguing questions on their physical origins. SN~2025coe is one of the nearest CaSTs discovered to date, and our coordinated multi-wavelength observations obtained days to weeks post-explosion reveal new insights on these enigmatic transients. With the most robust NIR spectroscopic time-series of a CaST collected to date, SN 2025coe shows spectral signatures characteristic of Type Ib SNe (i.e. He-rich stripped-envelope SNe). SN~2025coe is the third X-ray detected CaST and our analysis of \textit{Swift} X-ray data suggest interaction with 0.12 $\pm\,0.11\ M_{\odot}$ of circumstellar material (CSM) extending to at least $2 \times 10^{15} $cm ($\sim 30,000\ R_{\odot}$, while our analysis of the 1--240 GHz radio non-detections gives an outer radius of that CSM of at most $\sim 5\times 10^{15}$ cm. This inferred nearby high-density CSM extending out to $(3.5 \pm 1.5) \times10^{15}$ cm is similar to that seen in the other two X-ray detected CaSTs, and its presence suggests that either intensive mass-loss from a massive star or some exotic pre-supernova mass ejection may be a common feature of this subclass. Our work also expands upon recent studies on the optical properties of SN 2025coe and explores our current understanding of different progenitor systems that could possibly produce CaSTs.

SN 2023zcu: A Type IIP SN with Early Flash Features

We present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the Type IIP supernova SN~2023zcu, which exploded in the galaxy NGC~2139 (redshift $z$ = 0.006). SN~2023zcu exhibits a well-sampled light curve covering the rise, plateau, and nebular phases. It has an optically thick phase of $100.6 \pm 0.6$ d with a magnitude drop of $\sim$1.7 mag in the {\em V} band during the transition between the plateau and the nebular phases. Weak emission features in the early-time spectra indicate a low-level interaction between circumstellar material (CSM) and the SN ejecta. The spectral evolution is well sampled and exhibits a prominent P-Cygni profile of H$\alpha$, a defining characteristic of Type IIP SNe. Signatures of metal-line formation (e.g., \ion{Fe}{2}, \ion{Ca}{2} near-infrared triplet) are also evident in the spectra as the SN evolves. Spectral modeling with the radiative-transfer code \texttt{TARDIS} during the early photospheric phase (8.7--35.5 d since explosion) yields photospheric temperatures decreasing from $\sim$9,000 to $\sim$6,000 K and expansion velocities declining from $\sim$10,000 to $\sim$5,400 km s$^{-1}$. A tailored expanding photosphere method (EPM) fit based on the \texttt{TARDIS} models provides a distance estimate of $27.8 \pm 2.0$ Mpc. Nebular-phase spectra and bolometric light-curve modeling suggest a progenitor mass in the range 12--15 M$_\odot$. This thorough analysis helps to constrain progenitor properties and explosion parameters, thereby strengthening our understanding of Type IIP SNe.

PRISM: Protocol Refinement through Intelligent Simulation Modeling

Automating experimental protocol design and execution remains as a fundamental bottleneck in realizing self-driving laboratories. We introduce PRISM (Protocol Refinement through Intelligent Simulation Modeling), a framework that automates the design, validation, and execution of experimental protocols on a laboratory platform composed of off-the-shelf robotic instruments. PRISM uses a set of language-model-based agents that work together to generate and refine experimental steps. The process begins with automatically gathering relevant procedures from web-based sources describing experimental workflows. These are converted into structured experimental steps (e.g., liquid handling steps, deck layout and other related operations) through a planning, critique, and validation loop. The finalized steps are translated into the Argonne MADSci protocol format, which provides a unified interface for coordinating multiple robotic instruments (Opentrons OT-2 liquid handler, PF400 arm, Azenta plate sealer and peeler) without requiring human intervention between steps. To evaluate protocol-generation performance, we benchmarked both single reasoning models and multi-agent workflow across constrained and open-ended prompting paradigms. The resulting protocols were validated in a digital-twin environment built in NVIDIA Omniverse to detect physical or sequencing errors before execution. Using Luna qPCR amplification and Cell Painting as case studies, we demonstrate PRISM as a practical end-to-end workflow that bridges language-based protocol generation, simulation-based validation, and automated robotic execution.

SN 2024abfl: A Flat-Plateau, Low-Luminosity Type IIP Supernova with Early CSM Interaction

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2024abfl, a low-luminosity Type IIP supernova (LLSN) discovered shortly after explosion. The transient reached a peak absolute magnitude of $M_V = -14.9$ and exhibited an extended, flat plateau lasting $\sim$125 days. From the late-time bolometric light curve, we estimate a $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim0.01~M_\odot$, consistent with other LLSNe. Analytical shock-cooling models fail to reproduce the rapid early rise, indicating that circumstellar material (CSM) interaction contributed to the initial emission. The spectroscopic evolution is typical of LLSNe, with relatively narrow metal lines and low expansion velocities ($\lesssim 3000$ km s$^{-1}$) that decline slowly over time. We detect a broad ``ledge'' feature around 4600 \AA within three days of explosion, which we interpret as a blend of high-ionization shock-accelerated CSM lines. Multi-peaked H$\alpha$ profiles develop during the plateau phase, consistent with complex ejecta-CSM interactions. As one of the best-observed examples of LLSNe, SN 2024abfl exhibits a weak explosion and signatures of nearby CSM, offering new insights into progenitor properties, pre-explosion mass loss, and the diversity of LLSNe.

The Double-Peaked Calcium-Strong SN 2025coe: Progenitor Constraints from Early Interaction and Ejecta Asymmetries

Supernova (SN) 2025coe at a distance of $\sim$25 Mpc is the second-closest calcium-strong (CaST) transient. It was discovered at a large projected offset of $\sim$34 kpc from its potential host galaxy NGC 3277. Multiband photometry of SN 2025coe indicates the presence of two peaks at day $\sim$2 and day $\sim$11 after explosion. Modeling the bolometric light curve, we find that the first peak can be reproduced either by shock cooling of a compact envelope ($R_\mathrm{env}$ $\approx $6-40 $R_{\odot}$; $M_\mathrm{env}$ $\approx $0.1-0.2 $M_{\odot}$) or by interaction with close-in circumstellar material (CSM; $R_{\mathrm{CSM}} \lesssim 6 \times10^{14}$ cm), or a combination of both. The second peak is dominated by radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni ($M_{\mathrm{ej}} \approx $0.4-0.5 $M_{\odot}$; $M_{^{56}\mathrm{Ni}} \approx 1.4 \times 10^{-2}$ $M_{\odot}$). SN 2025coe rapidly evolves from the photospheric phase dominated by He I P-Cygni profiles to nebular phase spectra dominated by strong [Ca II] $\lambda \lambda$7291, 7323 and weak [O I] $\lambda \lambda$6300, 6364 emission lines. Simultaneous line profile modeling of [Ca II] and [O I] at nebular phases shows that an asymmetric core-collapse explosion of a low-mass ($\lesssim$3.3 $M_{\odot}$) He-core progenitor can explain the observed line profiles. Alternatively, lack of local star formation at the site of the SN explosion combined with a low ejecta mass is also consistent with a thermonuclear explosion due to a low-mass hybrid He-C/O white dwarf + C/O white dwarf merger.

OpenAI GPT-5 System Card

This is the system card published alongside the OpenAI GPT-5 launch, August 2025. GPT-5 is a unified system with a smart and fast model that answers most questions, a deeper reasoning model for harder problems, and a real-time router that quickly decides which model to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and explicit intent (for example, if you say 'think hard about this' in the prompt). The router is continuously trained on real signals, including when users switch models, preference rates for responses, and measured correctness, improving over time. Once usage limits are reached, a mini version of each model handles remaining queries. This system card focuses primarily on gpt-5-thinking and gpt-5-main, while evaluations for other models are available in the appendix. The GPT-5 system not only outperforms previous models on benchmarks and answers questions more quickly, but -- more importantly -- is more useful for real-world queries. We've made significant advances in reducing hallucinations, improving instruction following, and minimizing sycophancy, and have leveled up GPT-5's performance in three of ChatGPT's most common uses: writing, coding, and health. All of the GPT-5 models additionally feature safe-completions, our latest approach to safety training to prevent disallowed content. Similarly to ChatGPT agent, we have decided to treat gpt-5-thinking as High capability in the Biological and Chemical domain under our Preparedness Framework, activating the associated safeguards. While we do not have definitive evidence that this model could meaningfully help a novice to create severe biological harm -- our defined threshold for High capability -- we have chosen to take a precautionary approach.
