Volume and Hilbert function of R-divisors

If D is a big divisor and E is an effective divisor, then vol(D-E)<=vol(D)<=vol(D+E). We discuss when each inequality is an equality. Surprisingly, the answer is that the asymptotic equality vol(D-E)=vol(D) is equivalent to the equality of the Hilbert functions of D-E and D. The analogous result holds when vol(D)=vol(D+E).

Balanced line bundles on Fano varieties

A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin relates arithmetic properties of varieties with ample anticanonical class to geometric invariants; in particular, counting functions defined by metrized ample line bundles and the corresponding asymptotics of rational points of bounded height are interpreted in terms of cones of effective divisors and certain thresholds with respect to these cones. This framework leads to the notion of balanced line bundles, whose counting functions, conjecturally, capture generic distributions of rational points. We investigate balanced line bundles in the context of the Minimal Model Program, with special regard to the classification of Fano threefolds.

Algebraic bounds on analytic multiplier ideals

Given a pseudo-effective divisor L we construct the diminished ideal of L, a "continuous" extension of the asymptotic multiplier ideal for big divisors to the pseudo-effective boundary. For most pseudo-effective divisors L the multiplier ideal of the metric of minimal singularities of L is contained in the diminished ideal. We also characterize abundant divisors using the diminished ideal, indicating that in this case the geometric and analytic information should coincide.

Reduction maps and minimal model theory

We use reduction maps to study the minimal model program. Our main result is that the existence of a good minimal model for a klt pair $(X,Δ)$ can be detected on the base of the $(K_{X}+Δ)$-trivial reduction map. Thus we show that the main conjectures of the minimal model program can be interpreted as a natural statement on the existence of curves on $X$.

Numerical triviality and pullbacks

Let f: X \to Z be a surjective morphism of smooth complex projective varieties with connected fibers. Suppose that L is a pseudo-effective divisor on X that is f-numerically trivial. We show that there is a divisor D on Z such that L is numerically equivalent to f^*D.

On Eckl's pseudo-effective reduction map

Suppose that X is a complex projective variety and L is a pseudo-effective divisor. A numerical reduction map is a quotient of X by all subvarieties along which L is numerically trivial. We construct two variants: the L-trivial reduction map and the pseudo-effective reduction map of [Eckl05]. We show that these maps capture interesting geometric properties of L and use them to analyze abundant divisors.

A cone theorem for nef curves

Following ideas of V. Batyrev, we prove an analogue of the Cone Theorem for the closed cone of nef curves: an enlargement of the cone of nef curves is the closure of the sum of a K_X-non-negative portion and countably many K_X-negative coextremal rays. An example shows that this enlargement is necessary. We also describe the relationship between K_X-negative faces of this cone and the possible outcomes of the minimal model program.
