A NUT Charge Weak Gravity Conjecture from Dimensional Reduction

We analyze the constraints on four-derivative corrections to 5d Einstein-Maxwell theory from the black hole Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC). We calculate the leading corrections to the extremal mass of asymptotically flat 5d charged solutions as well as 4d Kaluza-Klein compactifications. The WGC bounds from the latter, interpreted as 4d dyonic black holes, are found to be strictly stronger. As magnetic graviphoton charge lifts to a NUT-like charge in 5d, we argue that the logic of the WGC should apply to these topological charges as well and leads to new constraints on purely gravitational theories.

Higher-Derivative Corrections to Entropy and the Weak Gravity Conjecture in Anti-de Sitter Space

We compute the four-derivative corrections to the geometry, extremality bound, and thermodynamic quantities of AdS-Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m black holes for general dimensions and horizon geometries. We confirm the universal relationship between the extremality shift at fixed charge and the shift of the microcanonical entropy, and discuss the consequences of this relation for the Weak Gravity Conjecture in AdS. The thermodynamic corrections are calculated using two different methods: first by explicitly solving the higher-derivative equations of motion and second, by evaluating the higher-derivative Euclidean on-shell action on the leading-order solution. In both cases we find agreement, up to the addition of a Casimir energy in odd dimensions. We derive the bounds on the four-derivative Wilson coefficients implied by the conjectured positivity of the leading corrections to the microcanonical entropy of thermodynamically stable black holes. These include the requirement that the coefficient of Riemann-squared is positive, meaning that the positivity of the entropy shift is related to the condition that $c - a$ is positive in the dual CFT. We discuss implications for the deviation of $η/s$ from its universal value and a potential lower bound.

The Black Hole Weak Gravity Conjecture with Multiple Charges

We study the effect of higher-derivative corrections on asymptotically flat, four-dimensional, non-rotating dyonic black holes in low-energy models of gravity coupled to $N$ $U(1)$ gauge fields. For large extremal black holes, the leading $\mathcal{O}\left(1/Q^2\right)$ correction to the extremality bound is calculated from the most general low-energy effective action containing operators with up to four derivatives. Motivated by the multi-charge generalization of the Weak Gravity Conjecture, we analyze the necessary kinematic conditions for an asymptotically large extremal black hole to decay into a multi-particle state of finite charge extremal black holes. In the large black hole regime, we show that the convex hull condition degenerates to the requirement that a certain quartic form, constructed from the Wilson coefficients of the four-derivative effective operators, is everywhere positive. Using on-shell unitarity methods, we show that higher-derivative operators are renormalized at one-loop only if they generate local, on-shell matrix elements that are invariant tensors of the electromagnetic duality group $U(N)$. The one-loop logarithmic running of the four-derivative Wilson coefficients is calculated and shown to imply the positivity of the extremality form at some finite value of $Q^2$. This result generalizes a recently given argument by Charles, and shows that under the given assumptions the multi-charge Weak Gravity Conjecture is not a Swampland criterion.

Gauged Supergravity from the Lunin-Maldacena background

We show how to expand the Lunin-Maldacena solution to the full bosonic sector of gauged $\mathcal N=2$ supergravity. In particular, we construct a consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on a $β$-deformed $\mathrm{AdS}_5\times S^5$ background retaining a dynamical metric and graviphoton in five dimensions. We comment on the relation between this solution and similar constructions on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, as well as the possibility of further consistent truncations which generalize the Lunin-Maldacena solution.

The Weyl Anomaly from the 6D Superconformal Index

We explore the connection between the holographic Weyl anomaly and the superconformal index in six-dimensional $(1,0)$ theories. Using earlier results from holographic computations of the $\mathcal O(1)$ contributions $δa$ and $δ(c-a)$ to the corresponding six-dimensional Weyl anomaly coefficients, we derive a pair of differential operators that extracts these values from the large-$N$ single-trace index. In doing so, we also highlight the structure of these corrections in terms of group theory invariants of the superconformal representations.

One-Loop Holographic Weyl Anomaly in Six Dimensions

We compute $\mathcal O(1)$ corrections to the holographic Weyl anomaly for six-dimensional $\mathcal N=(1,0)$ and $(2,0)$ theories using the functional Schrödinger method that is conjectured to work for supersymmetric theories on Ricci-flat backgrounds. We show that these corrections vanish for long representations of the $\mathcal N=(1,0)$ theory, and we obtain an expression for $δ(c-a)$ for short representations with maximum spin two. We also confirm that the one-loop corrections to the $\mathcal N=(2,0)$ M5-brane theory are equal and opposite to the anomaly for the free tensor multiplet. Finally, we discuss the possibility of extending the results to encompass multiplets with spins greater than two.

The interplay of the sign problem and the infinite volume limit: gauge theories with a theta term

QCD and related gauge theories have a sign problem when a $θ$-term is included; this complicates the extraction of physical information from Euclidean space calculations as one would do in lattice studies. The sign problem arises in this system because the partition function for configurations with fixed topological charge $Q$, $\mathcal{Z}_Q$, are summed weighted by $\exp(i Q θ)$ to obtain the partition function for fixed $θ$, $ \mathcal{Z}(θ)$. The sign problem gets exponentially worse numerically as the space-time volume is increased. Here it is shown that apart from the practical numerical issues associated with large volumes, there are some interesting issues of principle. A key quantity is the energy density as a function of $θ$, $\varepsilon(θ) = -\log \left( \mathcal{Z}(θ) \right )/V$. This is expected to be well defined in the large 4-volume limit. Similarly, one expects the energy density for a fixed topological density $\tilde{\varepsilon}(Q/V) = -\log \left(\mathcal{Z}_Q \right )/V$ to be well defined in the limit of large 4-volumes. Intuitively, one might expect that if one had the infinite volume expression for $\tilde{\varepsilon}(Q/V)$ to arbitrary accuracy, that one could reconstruct $\varepsilon(θ)$ by directly summing over the topological sectors of the partition function. We show here that there are circumstances where this is not the case. In particular, this occurs in regions where the curvature of $\varepsilon(θ)$ is negative.
