Obliviate: Efficient Unlearning in Recommender Systems

Machine unlearning is becoming increasingly critical in the context of data privacy regulations, particularly for recommendation systems that are directly trained on user interaction data. The goal of this work is to remove requested interaction data and their downstream influence from trained model while preserving recommendation quality, and to do so without incurring the substantial computational cost of full retraining. Existing approaches exhibit several limitations, including limited unlearning completeness and degradation in recommendation performance, while having substantial computational overhead. In this paper, we propose Obliviate, an efficient two-stage unlearning framework for recommender systems that achieves high unlearning completeness while maintaining good utility. In the first stage, we introduce a Low-Rank Unlearning Adapter (LUA), which employs a lightweight Hessian proxy to enable curvature-aware and efficient unlearning through localized low-rank adapters rather than full parameters. In the second stage, we propose Locality-Aware Calibration (LAC), a lightweight refinement stage that updates only the adapter parameters to improve the performance by enforcing unlearning via ranking-based objectives while preserving utility through knowledge distillation. Extensive empirical evaluations demonstrate that Obliviate achieves high level of forgetting with minimal loss in recommendation quality and at significantly reduced computational cost, offering a practical and scalable solution for large-scale recommender systems.

Demystifying ChatGPT: How It Masters Genre Recognition

The introduction of ChatGPT has garnered significant attention within the NLP community and beyond. Previous studies have demonstrated ChatGPT's substantial advancements across various downstream NLP tasks, highlighting its adaptability and potential to revolutionize language-related applications. However, its capabilities and limitations in genre prediction remain unclear. This work analyzes three Large Language Models (LLMs) using the MovieLens-100K dataset to assess their genre prediction capabilities. Our findings show that ChatGPT, without fine-tuning, outperformed other LLMs, and fine-tuned ChatGPT performed best overall. We set up zero-shot and few-shot prompts using audio transcripts/subtitles from movie trailers in the MovieLens-100K dataset, covering 1682 movies of 18 genres, where each movie can have multiple genres. Additionally, we extended our study by extracting IMDb movie posters to utilize a Vision Language Model (VLM) with prompts for poster information. This fine-grained information was used to enhance existing LLM prompts. In conclusion, our study reveals ChatGPT's remarkable genre prediction capabilities, surpassing other language models. The integration of VLM further enhances our findings, showcasing ChatGPT's potential for content-related applications by incorporating visual information from movie posters.

Tree DNN: A Deep Container Network

Multi-Task Learning (MTL) has shown its importance at user products for fast training, data efficiency, reduced overfitting etc. MTL achieves it by sharing the network parameters and training a network for multiple tasks simultaneously. However, MTL does not provide the solution, if each task needs training from a different dataset. In order to solve the stated problem, we have proposed an architecture named TreeDNN along with it's training methodology. TreeDNN helps in training the model with multiple datasets simultaneously, where each branch of the tree may need a different training dataset. We have shown in the results that TreeDNN provides competitive performance with the advantage of reduced ROM requirement for parameter storage and increased responsiveness of the system by loading only specific branch at inference time.

AutoCoMet: Smart Neural Architecture Search via Co-Regulated Shaping Reinforcement

Designing suitable deep model architectures, for AI-driven on-device apps and features, at par with rapidly evolving mobile hardware and increasingly complex target scenarios is a difficult task. Though Neural Architecture Search (NAS/AutoML) has made this easier by shifting paradigm from extensive manual effort to automated architecture learning from data, yet it has major limitations, leading to critical bottlenecks in the context of mobile devices, including model-hardware fidelity, prohibitive search times and deviation from primary target objective(s). Thus, we propose AutoCoMet that can learn the most suitable DNN architecture optimized for varied types of device hardware and task contexts, ~ 3x faster. Our novel co-regulated shaping reinforcement controller together with the high fidelity hardware meta-behavior predictor produces a smart, fast NAS framework that adapts to context via a generalized formalism for any kind of multi-criteria optimization.

A Datamining Approach for Emotions Extraction and Discovering Cricketers performance from Stadium to Sensex

Microblogging sites are the direct platform for the users to express their views. It has been observed from previous studies that people are viable to flaunt their emotions for events (eg. natural catastrophes, sports, academics etc.), for persons (actor/actress, sports person, scientist) and for the places they visit. In this study we focused on a sport event, particularly the cricket tournament and collected the emotions of the fans for their favorite players using their tweets. Further, we acquired the stock market performance of the brands which are either endorsing the players or sponsoring the match in the tournament. It has been observed that performance of the player triggers the users to flourish their emotions over social media therefore, we observed correlation between players performance and fans' emotions. Therefore, we found the direct connection between player's performance with brand's behavior on stock market.
