Sharing Cognition: Human Gesture and Natural Language Grounding Based Planning and Navigation for Indoor Robots

Cooperation among humans makes it easy to execute tasks and navigate seamlessly even in unknown scenarios. With our individual knowledge and collective cognition skills, we can reason about and perform well in unforeseen situations and environments. To achieve a similar potential for a robot navigating among humans and interacting with them, it is crucial for it to acquire the ability for easy, efficient and natural ways of communication and cognition sharing with humans. In this work, we aim to exploit human gestures which is known to be the most prominent modality of communication after the speech. We demonstrate how the incorporation of gestures for communicating spatial understanding can be achieved in a very simple yet effective way using a robot having the vision and listening capability. This shows a big advantage over using only Vision and Language-based Navigation, Language Grounding or Human-Robot Interaction in a task requiring the development of cognition and indoor navigation. We adapt the state-of-the-art modules of Language Grounding and Human-Robot Interaction to demonstrate a novel system pipeline in real-world environments on a Telepresence robot for performing a set of challenging tasks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first pipeline to couple the fields of HRI and language grounding in an indoor environment to demonstrate autonomous navigation.

DeepMPCVS: Deep Model Predictive Control for Visual Servoing

The simplicity of the visual servoing approach makes it an attractive option for tasks dealing with vision-based control of robots in many real-world applications. However, attaining precise alignment for unseen environments pose a challenge to existing visual servoing approaches. While classical approaches assume a perfect world, the recent data-driven approaches face issues when generalizing to novel environments. In this paper, we aim to combine the best of both worlds. We present a deep model predictive visual servoing framework that can achieve precise alignment with optimal trajectories and can generalize to novel environments. Our framework consists of a deep network for optical flow predictions, which are used along with a predictive model to forecast future optical flow. For generating an optimal set of velocities we present a control network that can be trained on the fly without any supervision. Through extensive simulations on photo-realistic indoor settings of the popular Habitat framework, we show significant performance gain due to the proposed formulation vis-a-vis recent state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, we show a faster convergence and an improved performance in trajectory length over recent approaches.

Simple means Faster: Real-Time Human Motion Forecasting in Monocular First Person Videos on CPU

We present a simple, fast, and light-weight RNN based framework for forecasting future locations of humans in first person monocular videos. The primary motivation for this work was to design a network which could accurately predict future trajectories at a very high rate on a CPU. Typical applications of such a system would be a social robot or a visual assistance system for all, as both cannot afford to have high compute power to avoid getting heavier, less power efficient, and costlier. In contrast to many previous methods which rely on multiple type of cues such as camera ego-motion or 2D pose of the human, we show that a carefully designed network model which relies solely on bounding boxes can not only perform better but also predicts trajectories at a very high rate while being quite low in size of approximately 17 MB. Specifically, we demonstrate that having an auto-encoder in the encoding phase of the past information and a regularizing layer in the end boosts the accuracy of predictions with negligible overhead. We experiment with three first person video datasets: CityWalks, FPL and JAAD. Our simple method trained on CityWalks surpasses the prediction accuracy of state-of-the-art method (STED) while being 9.6x faster on a CPU (STED runs on a GPU). We also demonstrate that our model can transfer zero-shot or after just 15% fine-tuning to other similar datasets and perform on par with the state-of-the-art methods on such datasets (FPL and DTP). To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to accurately forecast trajectories at a very high prediction rate of 78 trajectories per second on CPU.

Demo: Edge-centric Telepresence Avatar Robot for Geographically Distributed Environment

Using a robotic platform for telepresence applications has gained paramount importance in this decade. Scenarios such as remote meetings, group discussions, and presentations/talks in seminars and conferences get much attention in this regard. Though there exist some robotic platforms for such telepresence applications, they lack efficacy in communication and interaction between the remote person and the avatar robot deployed in another geographic location. Also, such existing systems are often cloud-centric which adds to its network overhead woes. In this demo, we develop and test a framework that brings the best of both cloud and edge-centric systems together along with a newly designed communication protocol. Our solution adds to the improvement of the existing systems in terms of robustness and efficacy in communication for a geographically distributed environment.

A Novel RF-assisted-Strobe System for Unobtrusive Vibration Detection of Machine Parts

In this paper, we propose a novel non-contact vibration measurement system that is competent in estimating linear and/or rotational motions of machine parts. The technique combines microwave radar, standard camera, and optical strobe to capture vibrational or rotational motions in a relatively fast and affordable manner when compared to the current technologies. In particular, the proposed technique is capable of not only measuring common vibrational parameters (e.g. frequency, motor rpm, etc.) but also provides spatial information of the vibrational sources so that the origin of each vibrational point can be identified accurately. Furthermore, it can also capture the wobbling motion of the rotating shafts. Thus, the proposed method can find immense applications in preventive maintenance across various industries where heavy machinery needs to be monitored unobtrusively or there is a requirement for non-contact multi-point vibration measurement for any machine inspection applications.

Identity-Preserving Realistic Talking Face Generation

Speech-driven facial animation is useful for a variety of applications such as telepresence, chatbots, etc. The necessary attributes of having a realistic face animation are 1) audio-visual synchronization (2) identity preservation of the target individual (3) plausible mouth movements (4) presence of natural eye blinks. The existing methods mostly address the audio-visual lip synchronization, and few recent works have addressed the synthesis of natural eye blinks for overall video realism. In this paper, we propose a method for identity-preserving realistic facial animation from speech. We first generate person-independent facial landmarks from audio using DeepSpeech features for invariance to different voices, accents, etc. To add realism, we impose eye blinks on facial landmarks using unsupervised learning and retargets the person-independent landmarks to person-specific landmarks to preserve the identity-related facial structure which helps in the generation of plausible mouth shapes of the target identity. Finally, we use LSGAN to generate the facial texture from person-specific facial landmarks, using an attention mechanism that helps to preserve identity-related texture. An extensive comparison of our proposed method with the current state-of-the-art methods demonstrates a significant improvement in terms of lip synchronization accuracy, image reconstruction quality, sharpness, and identity-preservation. A user study also reveals improved realism of our animation results over the state-of-the-art methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work in speech-driven 2D facial animation that simultaneously addresses all the above-mentioned attributes of a realistic speech-driven face animation.

Variational Clustering: Leveraging Variational Autoencoders for Image Clustering

Recent advances in deep learning have shown their ability to learn strong feature representations for images. The task of image clustering naturally requires good feature representations to capture the distribution of the data and subsequently differentiate data points from one another. Often these two aspects are dealt with independently and thus traditional feature learning alone does not suffice in partitioning the data meaningfully. Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) naturally lend themselves to learning data distributions in a latent space. Since we wish to efficiently discriminate between different clusters in the data, we propose a method based on VAEs where we use a Gaussian Mixture prior to help cluster the images accurately. We jointly learn the parameters of both the prior and the posterior distributions. Our method represents a true Gaussian Mixture VAE. This way, our method simultaneously learns a prior that captures the latent distribution of the images and a posterior to help discriminate well between data points. We also propose a novel reparametrization of the latent space consisting of a mixture of discrete and continuous variables. One key takeaway is that our method generalizes better across different datasets without using any pre-training or learnt models, unlike existing methods, allowing it to be trained from scratch in an end-to-end manner. We verify our efficacy and generalizability experimentally by achieving state-of-the-art results among unsupervised methods on a variety of datasets. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to pursue image clustering using VAEs in a purely unsupervised manner on real image datasets.

MOMBAT: Heart Rate Monitoring from Face Video using Pulse Modeling and Bayesian Tracking

A non-invasive yet inexpensive method for heart rate (HR) monitoring is of great importance in many real-world applications including healthcare, psychology understanding, affective computing and biometrics. Face videos are currently utilized for such HR monitoring, but unfortunately this can lead to errors due to the noise introduced by facial expressions, out-of-plane movements, camera parameters (like focus change) and environmental factors. We alleviate these issues by proposing a novel face video based HR monitoring method MOMBAT, that is, MOnitoring using Modeling and BAyesian Tracking. We utilize out-of-plane face movements to define a novel quality estimation mechanism. Subsequently, we introduce a Fourier basis based modeling to reconstruct the cardiovascular pulse signal at the locations containing the poor quality, that is, the locations affected by out-of-plane face movements. Furthermore, we design a Bayesian decision theory based HR tracking mechanism to rectify the spurious HR estimates. Experimental results reveal that our proposed method, MOMBAT outperforms state-of-the-art HR monitoring methods and performs HR monitoring with an average absolute error of 1.329 beats per minute and the Pearson correlation between estimated and actual heart rate is 0.9746. Moreover, it demonstrates that HR monitoring is significantly

Learning to Prevent Monocular SLAM Failure using Reinforcement Learning

Monocular SLAM refers to using a single camera to estimate robot ego motion while building a map of the environment. While Monocular SLAM is a well studied problem, automating Monocular SLAM by integrating it with trajectory planning frameworks is particularly challenging. This paper presents a novel formulation based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) that generates fail safe trajectories wherein the SLAM generated outputs do not deviate largely from their true values. Quintessentially, the RL framework successfully learns the otherwise complex relation between perceptual inputs and motor actions and uses this knowledge to generate trajectories that do not cause failure of SLAM. We show systematically in simulations how the quality of the SLAM dramatically improves when trajectories are computed using RL. Our method scales effectively across Monocular SLAM frameworks in both simulation and in real world experiments with a mobile robot.

Integrating Objects into Monocular SLAM: Line Based Category Specific Models

We propose a novel Line based parameterization for category specific CAD models. The proposed parameterization associates 3D category-specific CAD model and object under consideration using a dictionary based RANSAC method that uses object Viewpoints as prior and edges detected in the respective intensity image of the scene. The association problem is posed as a classical Geometry problem rather than being dataset driven, thus saving the time and labour that one invests in annotating dataset to train Keypoint Network for different category objects. Besides eliminating the need of dataset preparation, the approach also speeds up the entire process as this method processes the image only once for all objects, thus eliminating the need of invoking the network for every object in an image across all images. A 3D-2D edge association module followed by a resection algorithm for lines is used to recover object poses. The formulation optimizes for shape and pose of the object, thus aiding in recovering object 3D structure more accurately. Finally, a Factor Graph formulation is used to combine object poses with camera odometry to formulate a SLAM problem.

Lifting 2d Human Pose to 3d : A Weakly Supervised Approach

Estimating 3d human pose from monocular images is a challenging problem due to the variety and complexity of human poses and the inherent ambiguity in recovering depth from the single view. Recent deep learning based methods show promising results by using supervised learning on 3d pose annotated datasets. However, the lack of large-scale 3d annotated training data captured under in-the-wild settings makes the 3d pose estimation difficult for in-the-wild poses. Few approaches have utilized training images from both 3d and 2d pose datasets in a weakly-supervised manner for learning 3d poses in unconstrained settings. In this paper, we propose a method which can effectively predict 3d human pose from 2d pose using a deep neural network trained in a weakly-supervised manner on a combination of ground-truth 3d pose and ground-truth 2d pose. Our method uses re-projection error minimization as a constraint to predict the 3d locations of body joints, and this is crucial for training on data where the 3d ground-truth is not present. Since minimizing re-projection error alone may not guarantee an accurate 3d pose, we also use additional geometric constraints on skeleton pose to regularize the pose in 3d. We demonstrate the superior generalization ability of our method by cross-dataset validation on a challenging 3d benchmark dataset MPI-INF-3DHP containing in the wild 3d poses.

Indoor dense depth map at drone hovering

Autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) gained tremendous attention in recent years. Autonomous flight in indoor requires a dense depth map for navigable space detection which is the fundamental component for autonomous navigation. In this paper, we address the problem of reconstructing dense depth while a drone is hovering (small camera motion) in indoor scenes using already estimated cameras and sparse point cloud obtained from a vSLAM. We start by segmenting the scene based on sudden depth variation using sparse 3D points and introduce a patch-based local plane fitting via energy minimization which combines photometric consistency and co-planarity with neighbouring patches. The method also combines a plane sweep technique for image segments having almost no sparse point for initialization. Experiments show, the proposed method produces better depth for indoor in artificial lighting condition, low-textured environment compared to earlier literature in small motion.

3D point cloud registration with shape constraint

In this paper, a shape-constrained iterative algorithm is proposed to register a rigid template point-cloud to a given reference point-cloud. The algorithm embeds a shape-based similarity constraint into the principle of gravitation. The shape-constrained gravitation, as induced by the reference, controls the movement of the template such that at each iteration, the template better aligns with the reference in terms of shape. This constraint enables the alignment in difficult conditions indtroduced by change (presence of outliers and/or missing parts), translation, rotation and scaling. We discuss efficient implementation techniques with least manual intervention. The registration is shown to be useful for change detection in the 3D point-cloud. The algorithm is compared with three state-of-the-art registration approaches. The experiments are done on both synthetic and real-world data. The proposed algorithm is shown to perform better in the presence of big rotation, structured and unstructured outliers and missing data.

Deep Representation Learning Characterized by Inter-class Separation for Image Clustering

Despite significant advances in clustering methods in recent years, the outcome of clustering of a natural image dataset is still unsatisfactory due to two important drawbacks. Firstly, clustering of images needs a good feature representation of an image and secondly, we need a robust method which can discriminate these features for making them belonging to different clusters such that intra-class variance is less and inter-class variance is high. Often these two aspects are dealt with independently and thus the features are not sufficient enough to partition the data meaningfully. In this paper, we propose a method where we discover these features required for the separation of the images using deep autoencoder. Our method learns the image representation features automatically for the purpose of clustering and also select a coherent image and an incoherent image simultaneously for a given image so that the feature representation learning can learn better discriminative features for grouping the similar images in a cluster and at the same time separating the dissimilar images across clusters. Experiment results show that our method produces significantly better result than the state-of-the-art methods and we also show that our method is more generalized across different dataset without using any pre-trained model like other existing methods.

Edge SLAM: Edge Points Based Monocular Visual SLAM

Visual SLAM shows significant progress in recent years due to high attention from vision community but still, challenges remain for low-textured environments. Feature based visual SLAMs do not produce reliable camera and structure estimates due to insufficient features in a low-textured environment. Moreover, existing visual SLAMs produce partial reconstruction when the number of 3D-2D correspondences is insufficient for incremental camera estimation using bundle adjustment. This paper presents Edge SLAM, a feature based monocular visual SLAM which mitigates the above mentioned problems. Our proposed Edge SLAM pipeline detects edge points from images and tracks those using optical flow for point correspondence. We further refine these point correspondences using geometrical relationship among three views. Owing to our edge-point tracking, we use a robust method for two-view initialization for bundle adjustment. Our proposed SLAM also identifies the potential situations where estimating a new camera into the existing reconstruction is becoming unreliable and we adopt a novel method to estimate the new camera reliably using a local optimization technique. We present an extensive evaluation of our proposed SLAM pipeline with most popular open datasets and compare with the state-of-the art. Experimental result indicates that our Edge SLAM is robust and works reliably well for both textured and less-textured environment in comparison to existing state-of-the-art SLAMs.

Epipolar Geometry based Learning of Multi-view Depth and Ego-Motion from Monocular Sequences

Deep approaches to predict monocular depth and ego-motion have grown in recent years due to their ability to produce dense depth from monocular images. The main idea behind them is to optimize the photometric consistency over image sequences by warping one view into another, similar to direct visual odometry methods. One major drawback is that these methods infer depth from a single view, which might not effectively capture the relation between pixels. Moreover, simply minimizing the photometric loss does not ensure proper pixel correspondences, which is a key factor for accurate depth and pose estimations. In contrast, we propose a 2-view depth network to infer the scene depth from consecutive frames, thereby learning inter-pixel relationships. To ensure better correspondences, thereby better geometric understanding, we propose incorporating epipolar constraints to make the learning more geometrically sound. We use the Essential matrix obtained using Nist'er's Five Point Algorithm, to enforce meaningful geometric constraints, rather than using it as training labels. This allows us to use lesser no. of trainable parameters compared to state-of-the-art methods. The proposed method results in better depth images and pose estimates, which capture the scene structure and motion in a better way. Such a geometrically constrained learning performs successfully even in cases where simply minimizing the photometric error would fail.

Motion Blur removal via Coupled Autoencoder

In this paper a joint optimization technique has been proposed for coupled autoencoder which learns the autoencoder weights and coupling map (between source and target) simultaneously. The technique is applicable to any transfer learning problem. In this work, we propose a new formulation that recasts deblurring as a transfer learning problem, it is solved using the proposed coupled autoencoder. The proposed technique can operate on-the-fly, since it does not require solving any costly inverse problem. Experiments have been carried out on state-of-the-art techniques, our method yields better quality images in shorter operating times.

Coupled Analysis Dictionary Learning to inductively learn inversion: Application to real-time reconstruction of Biomedical signals

This work addresses the problem of reconstructing biomedical signals from their lower dimensional projections. Traditionally Compressed Sensing (CS) based techniques have been employed for this task. These are transductive inversion processes, the problem with these approaches is that the inversion is time-consuming and hence not suitable for real-time applications. With the recent advent of deep learning, Stacked Sparse Denoising Autoencoder (SSDAE) has been used for learning inversion in an inductive setup. The training period for inductive learning is large but is very fast during application -- capable of real-time speed. This work proposes a new approach for inductive learning of the inversion process. It is based on Coupled Analysis Dictionary Learning. Results on Biomedical signal reconstruction show that our proposed approach is very fast and yields result far better than CS and SSDAE.
