Geometric Reheating after Inflation

Inflationary reheating via resonant production of non-minimally coupled scalar particles with only gravitational coupling is shown to be extremely strong, exhibiting a negative coupling instability for $ξ< 0$ and a wide resonance decay for $ξ\gg 1$. Since non-minimal fields are generic after renormalisation in curved spacetime, this offers a new paradigm in reheating - one which naturally allows for efficient production of the massive bosons needed for GUT baryogenesis. We also show that both vector and tensor fields are produced resonantly during reheating, extending the previously known correspondences between bosonic fields of different spins during preheating.

Inflationary Reheating Classes via Spectral Methods

Inflationary reheating is almost completely controlled by the Floquet indices, $μ_k$. Using spectral theory we demonstrate that the stability bands (where $μ_k = 0$) of the Mathieu and Lamé equations are destroyed even in Minkowski spacetime, leaving a fractal Cantor set or a measure zero set of stable modes in the cases where the inflaton evolves in an almost-periodic or stochastic manner respectively. These two types of potential model the expected multi-field and quantum backreaction effects during reheating.

Gravito-electromagnetism

We develop and apply a fully covariant 1+3 electromagnetic analogy for gravity. The free gravitational field is covariantly characterized by the Weyl gravito-electric and gravito-magnetic spatial tensor fields, whose dynamical equations are the Bianchi identities. Using a covariant generalization of spatial vector algebra and calculus to spatial tensor fields, we exhibit the covariant analogy between the tensor Bianchi equations and the vector Maxwell equations. We identify gravitational source terms, couplings and potentials with and without electromagnetic analogues. The nonlinear vacuum Bianchi equations are shown to be invariant under covariant spatial duality rotation of the gravito-electric and gravito-magnetic tensor fields. We construct the super-energy density and super-Poynting vector of the gravitational field as natural U(1) group invariants, and derive their super-energy conservation equation. A covariant approach to gravito-electric/magnetic monopoles is also presented.

Resonant Gravitational Wave Amplification - Axion and Inflaton

We demonstrate the parametric amplification of the stochastic gravitational wave background during inflationary reheating and during axion/moduli oscillations. This amplification enhances the detectability of the string/inflationary gravity wave signal, leaving a finger-print on the spectrum which might be found with future gravitational wave detectors.

The Preheating - Gravitational Wave Correspondence

The gravitational wave equations form a parametric resonance system during oscillatory reheating after inflation, when cast in terms of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor. This is in direct analogy with preheating. For chaotic inflation with a quadratic potential, this analogy is exact. The resulting amplification of the gravitational wave spectrum begins in the broad resonance regime for chaotic inflation but quickly moves towards narrow resonance. This increases the amplitude and breaks the scale invariance of the tensor spectrum generated during inflation, an effect which may be detectable. The parametric amplification is absent, however, in 1st-order phase transition models and "warm" inflationary models with continuous entropy production.
