Positional memory of skyrmions in magnetic bilayers

We numerically and analytically study the transient dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in synthetic antiferromagnets under a magnetic field gradient. We consider skyrmions in a bilayer with antiferromagnetic coupling between the layers. The skyrmions in the two layers move almost perpendicular to the field gradient and the motion is eventually halted with the two skyrmions at a distance from each other. We find that the skyrmion displacement is proportional to the field gradient, while the time it takes to reach their final position is almost independent of it. Below a critical magnetic field gradient strength, the system displays an unusual 'remembering' dynamics: when the magnetic field gradient is removed, the skyrmions return to their original positions to a high degree of accuracy. We explain this observation and other quantitative features using a moduli space dynamics approximation. We further provide an exact treatment of the dynamics that indicates that deviations from exact memory of the skyrmion position can arise.

Moduli spaces and breather dynamics of analytic solutions in Heisenberg exchange-free chiral magnets

We investigate the special case of the chiral magnet with vanishing Heisenberg exchange energy, whose axisymmetric Skyrmion solution has previously been found. The dynamical equations of this model look like inviscid fluid flow, and by investigating path lines of this flow we can construct explicit static and dynamic solutions. We find an infinite-dimensional family of static Skyrmions that are related to the axisymmetric Skyrmion by co-ordinate transformations thus discovering a new moduli space, and further infinite-dimensional families of axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric breather-like supercompactons.

Symmetry-Governed Dynamics of Magnetic Skyrmions Under Field Pulses

Topological magnetic solitons, such as skyrmions, exhibit intriguing particle-like properties that make them attractive for fundamental research and practical applications. While many magnetic systems can host skyrmions as statically stable configurations, chiral magnets stand out for their ability to accommodate a wide diversity of skyrmions with arbitrary topological charges and varied morphologies. Despite extensive investigation, a complete understanding of chiral magnetic skyrmions has remained elusive. We present a classification of all chiral skyrmions, demonstrating three classes based on their response to external magnetic field pulses: stationary, translating, and rotating. We highlight the role of magnetic texture symmetry in this classification. Skyrmions with varied dynamics offer avenues for exploring phenomena like skyrmion-skyrmion scattering that might be crucial for future applications.

Modelling the elliptical instability of magnetic skyrmions

Two recently developed methods of modelling chiral magnetic soliton elliptical instability are applied in two novel scenarios, the tilted ferromagnetic phase of chiral magnets dominated by easy-plane anisotropy and the general case of the chiral magnet with tilted applied field and arbitrary uniaxial anisotropy. In the former case, the analytical predictions are found to exactly match previous numerical results. In the latter case, instability of isolated chiral skyrmions has not yet been studied, although the predictions correspond interestingly to previous numerical investigation of the phase diagram.

Interaction and collision of skyrmions in chiral antiferromagnets

Skyrmions in an antiferromagnet can travel as solitary waves in stark contrast to the situation in ferromagnets. Traveling skyrmion solutions have been found numerically in chiral antiferromagnets. We study head-on collision events between two skyrmions. We find that the result of the collision depends on the initial velocity of the skyrmions. For small velocities, the skyrmions shrink as they approach, then bounce back and eventually acquire almost their initial speed. For larger velocities, the skyrmions approach each other and shrink until they become singular points at some finite separation and are eventually annihilated. Considering skyrmion energetics, we can determine the regimes of the different dynamical behaviors. Using a collective co-ordinate approach, we reproduce the dynamics of the collisions including the variation of the size of the skyrmions and collapse above a critical velocity.

Stability and asymptotic interactions of chiral magnetic skyrmions in a tilted magnetic field

Using a general framework, interaction potentials between chiral magnetic solitons in a planar system with a tilted external magnetic field are calculated analytically in the limit of large separation. The results are compared to previous numerical results for solitons with topological charge $\pm 1$. A key feature of the calculation is the interpretation of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) as a background $SO(3)$ gauge field. In a tilted field, this leads to a $U(1)$-gauged version of the usual equation for spin excitations, leading to a distinctive oscillating interaction profile. We also obtain predictions for skyrmion stability in a tilted field which closely match numerical observations.

Geometry and Symmetry in Skyrmion Dynamics

The uniform motion of chiral magnetic skyrmions induced by a spin-transfer torque displays an intricate dependence on the skyrmions' topological charge and shape. We reveal surprising patterns in this dependence through simulations of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with Zhang-Li torque and explain them through a geometric analysis of Thiele's equation. In particular, we show that the velocity distribution of topologically non-trivial skyrmions depends on their symmetry: it is a single circle for skyrmions of high symmetry and a family of circles for low-symmetry configurations. We also show that the velocity of the topologically trivial skyrmions, previously believed to be the fastest objects, can be surpassed, for instance, by antiskyrmions. The generality of our approach suggests the validity of our results for exchange frustrated magnets, bubble materials, and others.

Magnetic skyrmions, chiral kinks and holomorphic functions

We present a novel approach to understanding the extraordinary diversity of magnetic skyrmion solutions. Our approach combines a new classification scheme with efficient analytical and numerical methods. We introduce the concept of chiral kinks to account for regions of disfavoured chirality in spin textures, and classify two-dimensional magnetic skyrmions in terms of closed domain walls carrying such chiral kinks. In particular, we show that the topological charge of magnetic skyrmions can be expressed in terms of the constituent closed domain walls and chiral kinks. Guided by our classification scheme, we propose a method for creating hitherto unknown magnetic skyrmions which involves initial spin configurations formulated in terms of holomorphic functions and subsequent numerical energy minimization. We numerically study the stability of the resulting magnetic skyrmions for a range of external fields and anisotropy parameters, and provide quantitative estimates of the stability range for the whole variety of skyrmions with kinks. We show that the parameters limiting this range can be well described in terms of the relative energies of particular skyrmion solutions and isolated stripes with and without chiral kinks.

Magnetic Skyrmions at Critical Coupling

We introduce a family of models for magnetic skyrmions in the plane for which infinitely many solutions can be given explicitly. The energy defining the models is bounded below by a linear combination of degree and total vortex strength, and the configurations attaining the bound satisfy a first order Bogomol'nyi equation. We give explicit solutions which depend on an arbitrary holomorphic function. The simplest solutions are the basic Bloch and N\'eel skyrmions, but we also exhibit distorted and rotated single skyrmions as well as line defects, and configurations consisting of skyrmions and anti-skyrmions.
