Uplink Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Mobile Edge Computing with Short-Packet Communications

In this paper, a Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) scheme is proposed to assist a Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) system where local computation tasks from two users are offloaded to the MEC server, facilitated by uplink RSMA for processing. The efficiency of the MEC service is hence primarily influenced by the RSMA-aided task offloading phase and the subsequent task computation phase, where reliable and low-latency communication is required. For this practical consideration, short-packet communication in the Finite Blocklength (FBL) regime is introduced. In this context, we propose a novel uplink RSMA-aided MEC framework and derive the overall Successful Computation Probability (SCP) with FBL consideration. To maximize the SCP of our proposed RSMA-aided MEC, we strategically optimize: (1) the task offloading factor which determines the number of tasks to be offloaded and processed by the MEC server; (2) the transmit power allocation between different RSMA streams; and (3) the task-splitting factor which decides how many tasks are allocated to splitting streams, while adhering to FBL constraints. To address the strong coupling between these variables in the SCP expression, we apply the Alternative Optimization method, which formulates tractable subproblems to optimize each variable iteratively. The resultant non-convex subproblems are then tackled by Successive Convex Approximation. Numerical results demonstrate that applying uplink RSMA in the MEC system with FBL constraints can not only improve the SCP performance but also provide lower latency in comparison to conventional transmission scheme such as Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA).

Uplink Rate Splitting Multiple Access with Imperfect Channel State Information and Interference Cancellation

This article investigates the performance of uplink rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in a two-user scenario, addressing an under-explored domain compared to its downlink counterpart. With the increasing demand for uplink communication in applications like the Internet-of-Things, it is essential to account for practical imperfections, such as inaccuracies in channel state information at the receiver (CSIR) and limitations in successive interference cancellation (SIC), to provide realistic assessments of system performance. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability, throughput, and asymptotic outage behavior of uplink users, considering imperfect CSIR and SIC. We validate the accuracy of these derived expressions using Monte Carlo simulations. Our findings reveal that at low transmit power levels, imperfect CSIR significantly affects system performance more severely than SIC imperfections. However, as the transmit power increases, the impact of imperfect CSIR diminishes, while the influence of SIC imperfections becomes more pronounced. Moreover, we highlight the impact of the rate allocation factor on user performance. Finally, our comparison with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) highlights the outage performance trade-offs between RSMA and NOMA. RSMA proves to be more effective in managing imperfect CSIR and enhances performance through strategic message splitting, resulting in more robust communication.

Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in Wideband OFDM Communications: Circuit-Based Modeling and Optimization

This work investigates the modeling and optimization of beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS), which generalizes conventional RIS with diagonal phase shift matrices and provides additional flexibility for manipulating wireless channels, in wideband communication systems. Specifically, we start from the signal modeling of the BD-RIS-aided orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, which bridges the time-domain and frequency-domain channels, and explicitly shows the frequency dependence of the BD-RIS response. We next characterize the frequency dependence of the BD-RIS response based on circuit models. Benefiting from the admittance parameter analysis, we model individually each tunable admittance component of BD-RIS and derive an approximated linear expression with respect to the frequency of the transmit signals. With the proposed signal model for the BD-RIS-aided OFDM system and the frequency-dependent BD-RIS model, we propose algorithms to optimize the BD-RIS and the power allocation at the transmitter to maximize the average rate for a BD-RIS-aided OFDM system. Finally, simulation results show that BD-RIS outperforms conventional RIS in the OFDM system. More importantly, the impact of wideband modeling of BD-RIS on the system performance becomes more significant as the circuit complexity of BD-RIS architectures increases.

Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Multi-Carrier RF Wireless Power Transfer

Radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is promising for promoting sustainability in future wireless systems, but its low end-to-end power transfer efficiency is a critical challenge. For this, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can be leveraged to enhance efficiency by providing nearly passive beamforming gains. Beyond diagonal (BD) RIS is a new RIS variant offering greater performance benefits than traditional diagonal RIS (D-RIS), though its potential for RF-WPT remains unexplored. Motivated by this, we consider a single-input single-output BD-RIS-aided RF-WPT system and we formulate a joint beamforming and waveform optimization problem aiming to maximize the harvested power at the receiver. We propose an optimization framework relying on successive convex approximation, alternating optimization, and semi-definite relaxation. Numerical results show that increasing the number of transmit sub-carriers or RIS elements improves the harvested power. We verify by simulation that BD-RIS leads to the same performance as D-RIS under far-field line-of-sight conditions (in the absence of mutual coupling), while it outperforms D-RIS as the non-line-of-sight components become dominant.

A Decoupled Channel Estimation Method for Beyond Diagonal RIS

Beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) is a new architecture for RIS where elements are interconnected to provide more wave manipulation flexibility than traditional single connected RIS, enhancing data rate and coverage. However, channel estimation for BD-RIS is challenging due to the more complex multiple-connection structure involving their scattering elements. To address this issue, this paper proposes a decoupled channel estimation method for BD-RIS that yields separate estimates of the involved channels to enhance the accuracy of the overall combined channel by capitalizing on its Kronecker structure. Starting from a least squares estimate of the combined channel and by properly reshaping the resulting filtered signal, the proposed algorithm resorts to a Khatri-Rao Factorization (KRF) method that teases out the individual channels based on simple rank-one matrix approximation steps. Numerical results show that the proposed decoupled channel estimation yields more accurate channel estimates than the classical least squares scheme.

Robust Max-Min Fair Beamforming Design for Rate Splitting Multiple Access-aided Visible Light Communications

This paper addresses the robust beamforming design for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA)-aided visible light communication (VLC) networks with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In particular, we first derive the theoretical lower bound for the channel capacity of RSMA-aided VLC networks. Then we investigate the beamforming design to solve the max-min fairness (MMF) problem of RSMA-aided VLC networks under the practical optical power constraint and electrical power constraint while considering the practical imperfect CSIT scenario. To address the problem, we propose a constrained-concave-convex programming (CCCP)-based beamforming design algorithm which exploits semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique and a penalty method to deal with the rank-one constraint caused by SDR. Numerical results show that the proposed robust beamforming design algorithm for RSMA-aided VLC network achieves a superior performance over the existing ones for space-division multiple access (SDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA).

Full-Duplex Beyond Self-Interference: The Unlimited Sensing Way

The success of full-stack full-duplex communication systems depends on how effectively one can achieve digital self-interference cancellation (SIC). Towards this end, in this paper, we consider unlimited sensing framework (USF) enabled full-duplex system. We show that by injecting folding non-linearities in the sensing pipeline, one can not only suppress self-interference but also recover the signal of interest (SoI). This approach leads to novel design of the receiver architecture that is complemented by a modulo-domain channel estimation method. We then demonstrate the advantages of modulo ADC by analyzing the relationship between quantization noise, quantization bits, and dynamic range. Numerical experiments show that the USF enabled receiver structure can achieve up to 40 dB digital SIC by using as few as 4-bits per sample. Our method outperforms the previous approach based on adaptive filters when it comes to SoI reconstruction, detection, and digital SIC performance.

Beyond Diagonal RIS: Passive Maximum Ratio Transmission and Interference Nulling Enabler

Beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RIS) generalizes and goes beyond conventional diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (D-RIS) by interconnecting elements to generate beyond diagonal scattering matrices, which significantly strengthen the wireless channels. In this work, we use BD-RIS for passive multiuser beamforming in multiuser multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Specifically, we design the scattering matrix of BD-RIS to either maximize the sum received signal power at the users following maximum ratio transmission (MRT), or to nullify the interference at the users following zero forcing (ZF). Furthermore, we investigate uniform/optimized power allocation and ZF precoding at the base station (BS). Numerical results show that BD-RIS improves the interference nulling capability and sum rate with fewer reflecting elements (REs) compared to D-RIS. In addition, at moderate to high signal to noise ratios (SNRs), passive interference nulling reduces the complexity at the BS by relaxing the need for precoding or water-filling power allocation design. Furthermore, the passive MRT with ZF precoding achieves a tight sum rate performance to the joint design considering MU-MISO scenarios with many REs while maintaining low computational complexity and simplifying the channel estimation.

Physics-Compliant Modeling and Scaling Laws of Multi-RIS Aided Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology enabling the control of wireless channels and improving coverage in wireless networks. To further extend coverage, multi-RIS aided systems have been explored, where multiple RISs steer the signal toward the receiver via a multi-hop path. However, deriving a physics-compliant channel model for multi-RIS aided systems is still an open problem. In this study, we fill this gap by modeling multi-RIS aided systems through multiport network theory, and deriving the scaling law of the physics-compliant channel gain. The derived physics-compliant channel model differs from the widely used model, where the structural scattering of the RISs is neglected. Theoretical insights, validated by numerical results, show a significant discrepancy between the physics-compliant and the widely used models. This discrepancy increases with the number of RISs and decreases with the number of RIS elements, reaching 200% in a system with eight RISs with 128 elements each.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Overloaded Multi-group Multicast: A First Experimental Study

Multi-group multicast (MGM) is an increasingly important form of multi-user wireless communications with several potential applications, such as video streaming, federated learning, safety-critical vehicular communications, etc. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is a powerful interference management technique that can, in principle, achieve higher data rates and greater fairness for all types of multi-user wireless communications, including MGM. This paper presents the first-ever experimental evaluation of RSMA-based MGM, as well as the first-ever three-way comparison of RSMA-based, Space Divison Multiple Access (SDMA)-based and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA)-based MGM. Using a measurement setup involving a two-antenna transmitter and two groups of two single-antenna users per group, we consider the problem of realizing throughput (max-min) fairness across groups for each of three multiple access schemes, over nine experimental cases in a line-of-sight environment capturing varying levels of pathloss difference and channel correlation across the groups. Over these cases, we observe that RSMA-based MGM achieves fairness at a higher throughput for each group than SDMA- and NOMA-based MGM. These findings validate RSMA-based MGM's promised gains from the theoretical literature.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Coexistence of Semantic and Bit Communications

In the sixth generation (6G) of cellular networks, the demands for capacity and connectivity will increase dramatically to meet the requirements of emerging services for both humans and machines. Semantic communication has shown great potential because of its efficiency, and suitability for users who only care about the semantic meaning. But bit communication is still needed for users requiring original messages. Therefore, there will be a coexistence of semantic and bit communications in future networks. This motivates us to explore how to allocate resources in such a coexistence scenario. We investigate different uplink multiple access (MA) schemes for the coexistence of semantic users and a bit user, namely orthogonal multiple access (OMA), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA). We characterize the rate regions achieved by those MA schemes. The simulation results show that RSMA always outperforms NOMA and has better performance in high semantic rate regimes compared to OMA. We find that RSMA scheme design, rate region, and power allocation are quite different in the coexistence scenario compared to the bit-only communication, primarily due to the need to consider the understandability in semantic communications. Interestingly, in contrast to bit-only communications where RSMA is capacity achieving without any need for time sharing, in the coexistence scenario, time sharing helps enlarging RSMA rate region.

A Dual-Function Radar-Communication System Empowered by Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

This work focuses on the use of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems to improve communication capacity and sensing precision, and enhance coverage for both functions. In contrast to most of the existing RIS aided DFRC works where the RIS is modeled as a diagonal phase shift matrix and can only reflect signals to half space, we propose a novel beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS) aided DFRC system. Specifically, the proposed BD-RIS supports the hybrid reflecting and transmitting mode, and is compatible with flexible architectures, enabling the system to realize full-space coverage and to achieve enhanced performance. To achieve the expected benefits, we jointly optimize the transmit waveform, the BD-RIS matrices, and sensing receive filters, by maximizing the minimum signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio for fair target detection, subject to the constraints of the communication quality of service, different BD-RIS architectures and power budget. To solve the non-convex and non-smooth max-min problem, a general solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is provided. Numerical simulations validate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm and show the superiority of the BD-RIS aided DFRC system in terms of both communication and sensing compared to conventional RIS aided DFRC.

Input Distribution Optimization in OFDM Dual-Function Radar-Communication Systems

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely adopted in dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems, where radar and communications are performed simultaneously with a common signal. However, with random communication symbols (CS) in DFRC, the transmit signal has a random ambiguity function that affects the radar's range-velocity estimation performance, whose influence is remained uncovered. Hence, this paper focuses on minimizing the outlier probability (OP) -- the probability of incorrectly estimating a target's range-velocity bin -- in OFDM DFRC w.r.t the CS probability distribution (i.e., the \emph{input distribution}). Conditioned on the CSs, the OP only depends on the CS magnitudes. Hence, we consider the following two schemes for the above optimization: CSs with (1) constant magnitude (phase shift keying input), and (2) random magnitude (Gaussian input). For (1), the problem reduces to the familiar power allocation design across OFDM's subcarriers and symbols, with uniform power allocation across subcarriers and a \emph{windowed} power allocation across symbols being near-optimal. For (2), the mean and variance of the Gaussian distribution at each subcarrier is optimized, with an additional communication constraint to avoid the zero-variance solution where no CSs are carried. We observe that subcarriers with strong communication channels feature strong variance (i.e., favour communications) while the others are characterized by a strong mean (favouring radar). However, the overall power allocation (i.e., the sum of mean and variance) across the OFDM subcarriers and symbols is similar to (1). Simulations show that CSs with random magnitudes degrade the sensing performance, but can be compensated significantly with the proposed input distribution optimization.

Enhancing Spatial Multiplexing and Interference Suppression for Near- and Far-Field Communications with Sparse MIMO

Multiple-input multiple-output has been a key technology for wireless systems for decades. For typical MIMO communication systems, antenna array elements are usually separated by half of the carrier wavelength, thus termed as conventional MIMO. In this paper, we investigate the performance of multi-user MIMO communication, with sparse arrays at both the transmitter and receiver side, i.e., the array elements are separated by more than half wavelength. Given the same number of array elements, the performance of sparse MIMO is compared with conventional MIMO. On one hand, sparse MIMO has a larger aperture, which can achieve narrower main lobe beams that make it easier to resolve densely located users. Besides, increased array aperture also enlarges the near-field communication region, which can enhance the spatial multiplexing gain, thanks to the spherical wavefront property in the near-field region. On the other hand, element spacing larger than half wavelength leads to undesired grating lobes, which, if left unattended, may cause severe inter-user interference. To gain further insights, we first study the spatial multiplexing gain of the basic single-user sparse MIMO communication system, where a closed-form expression of the near-field effective degree of freedom is derived. The result shows that the EDoF increases with the array sparsity for sparse MIMO before reaching its upper bound, which equals to the minimum value between the transmit and receive antenna numbers. Furthermore, the scaling law for the achievable data rate with varying array sparsity is analyzed and an array sparsity-selection strategy is proposed. We then consider the more general multi-user sparse MIMO communication system. It is shown that sparse MIMO is less likely to experience severe IUI than conventional MIMO.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Non-Orthogonal Unicast Multicast: An Experimental Study

Non-orthogonal unicast multicast (NOUM) is a variant of multi-antenna multi-user communications where the users desire a shared message (multicast) in addition to their respective unique messages (unicast). The multicast rate is capped in many emerging NOUM applications, such as live-event broadcasting, location-based services and vehicular communications. Given this constraint, we experimentally show that when the user channels are highly correlated, Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA)-based NOUM can meet the multicast rate while supporting a larger unicast sum rate than multi-user linear precoding (MULP)-based NOUM and orthogonal unicast multicast.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Quantized ISAC LEO Satellite Systems: A Max-Min Fair Energy-Efficient Beam Design

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems with sensing functionality are envisioned to facilitate global-coverage service and emerging applications in 6G. Currently, two fundamental challenges, namely, inter-beam interference among users and power limitation at the LEO satellites, limit the full potential of the joint design of sensing and communication. To effectively control the interference, a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) scheme is employed as the interference management strategy in the system design. On the other hand, to address the limited power supply at the LEO satellites, we consider low-resolution quantization digital-to-analog converters (DACs) at the transmitter to reduce power consumption, which grows exponentially with the number of quantization bits. Additionally, optimizing the total energy efficiency (EE) of the system is a common practice to save the power. However, this metric lacks fairness among users. To ensure this fairness and further enhance EE, we investigate the max-min fairness EE of the RSMA-assisted integrated sensing and communications (ISAC)-LEO satellite system. In this system, the satellite transmits a quantized dual-functional signal serving downlink users while detecting a target. Specifically, we optimize the precoders for maximizing the minimal EE among all users, considering the power consumption of each radio frequency (RF) chain under communication and sensing constraints. To tackle this optimization problem, we proposed an iterative algorithm based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and Dinkelbach's method. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed design and RSMA architecture outperforms strategies maximizing the total EE of the system, space-division multiple access (SDMA), and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of max-min fairness EE and the communication-sensing trade-off.

Meta-Learning Based Optimization for Large Scale Wireless Systems

Optimization algorithms for wireless systems play a fundamental role in improving their performance and efficiency. However, it is known that the complexity of conventional optimization algorithms in the literature often exponentially increases with the number of transmit antennas and communication users in the wireless system. Therefore, in the large scale regime, the astronomically large complexity of these optimization algorithms prohibits their use and prevents assessing large scale wireless systems performance under optimized conditions. To overcome this limitation, this work proposes instead the use of an unsupervised meta-learning based approach to directly perform non-convex optimization at significantly reduced complexity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed meta-learning based solution, the sum-rate (SR) maximization problem for the following three emerging 6G technologies is contemplated: hierarchical rate-splitting multiple access (H-RSMA), integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), and beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RIS). Through numerical results, it is demonstrated that the proposed meta-learning based optimization framework is able to successfully optimize the performance and also reveal unknown aspects of the operation in the large scale regime for the considered three 6G technologies.

Full-Space Wireless Sensing Enabled by Multi-Sector Intelligent Surfaces

The multi-sector intelligent surface (IS), benefiting from a smarter wave manipulation capability, has been shown to enhance channel gain and offer full-space coverage in communications. However, the benefits of multi-sector IS in wireless sensing remain unexplored. This paper introduces the application of multi-sector IS for wireless sensing/localization. Specifically, we propose a new self-sensing system, where an active source controller uses the multi-sector IS geometry to reflect/scatter the emitted signals towards the entire space, thereby achieving full-space coverage for wireless sensing. Additionally, dedicated sensors are installed aligned with the IS elements at each sector, which collect echo signals from the target and cooperate to sense the target angle. In this context, we develop a maximum likelihood estimator of the target angle for the proposed multi-sector IS self-sensing system, along with the corresponding theoretical limits defined by the Cramér-Rao Bound. The analysis reveals that the advantages of the multi-sector IS self-sensing system stem from two aspects: enhancing the probing power on targets (thereby improving power efficiency) and increasing the rate of target angle (thereby enhancing the transceiver's sensitivity to target angles). Finally, our analysis and simulations confirm that the multi-sector IS self-sensing system, particularly the 4-sector architecture, achieves full-space sensing capability beyond the single-sector IS configuration. Furthermore, similarly to communications, employing directive antenna patterns on each sector's IS elements and sensors significantly enhances sensing capabilities. This enhancement originates from both aspects of improved power efficiency and target angle sensitivity, with the former also being observed in communications while the latter being unique in sensing.
