Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces 2.0: Beyond Diagonal Phase Shift Matrices

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been envisioned as a promising technique to enable and enhance future wireless communications due to its potential to engineer the wireless channels in a cost-effective manner. Extensive research attention has been drawn to the use of conventional RIS 1.0 with diagonal phase shift matrices, where each RIS element is connected to its own load to ground but not connected to other elements. However, the simple architecture of RIS 1.0 limits its flexibility of manipulating passive beamforming. To fully exploit the benefits of RIS, in this paper, we introduce RIS 2.0 beyond diagonal phase shift matrices, namely beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS). We first explain the modeling of BD-RIS based on the scattering parameter network analysis and classify BD-RIS by the mathematical characteristics of the scattering matrix, supported modes, and architectures. Then, we provide simulations to evaluate the sum-rate performance with different modes/architectures of BD-RIS. We summarize the benefits of BD-RIS in providing high flexibility in wave manipulation, enlarging coverage, facilitating the deployment, and requiring low complexity in resolution bit and element numbers. Inspired by the benefits of BD-RIS, we also discuss potential applications of BD-RIS in various wireless systems. Finally, we list key challenges in modeling, designing, and implementing BD-RIS in practice and point to possible future research directions for BD-RIS.

A Meta-Learning Based Precoder Optimization Framework for Rate-Splitting Multiple Access

In this letter, we propose the use of a meta-learning based precoder optimization framework to directly optimize the Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) precoders with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT). By exploiting the overfitting of the compact neural network to maximize the explicit Average Sum-Rate (ASR) expression, we effectively bypass the need for any other training data while minimizing the total running time. Numerical results reveal that the meta-learning based solution achieves similar ASR performance to conventional precoder optimization in medium-scale scenarios, and significantly outperforms sub-optimal low complexity precoder algorithms in the large-scale regime.

OFDM-RSMA: Robust Transmission under Inter-Carrier Interference

Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is a multiple access scheme to mitigate the effects of the multi-user interference (MUI) in multi-antenna systems. In this study, we leverage the interference management capabilities of RSMA to tackle the issue of inter-carrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem to find the optimal subcarrier and power allocation for downlink transmission in a two-user system using RSMA and OFDM. A weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE)-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a solution for the formulated non-convex problem. We show that the marriage of rate-splitting (RS) with OFDM provides complementary strengths to cope with peculiar characteristic of wireless medium and its performance-limiting challenges including inter-symbol interference (ISI), MUI, ICI, and inter-numerology interference (INI). The sum-rate performance of the proposed OFDM-RSMA scheme is numerically compared with that of conventional orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and OFDM-non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). It is shown that the proposed OFDM-RSMA outperforms OFDM-NOMA and OFDMA in diverse propagation channel conditions owing to its flexible structure and robust interference management capabilities.

Coordinated Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Networks with Super-Common Message

Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is an emerging multiple access technique for multi-antenna networks that splits messages into common and private parts for flexible interference mitigation. Motivated by its robustness and scalability, it is promising to employ RSMA in integrated satellite-terrestrial networks (ISTN), where a satellite serves satellite users (SUs) broadly with a multibeam multicast transmission while terrestrial base station (BS) serves cellular users (CUs) with a unicast transmission, operating in the same frequency band. To avoid the data exchange between satellite/cellular networks via backhaul, we assume a coordinated ISTN relying on imperfect channel state information. We put forth a coordinated RSMA framework tailored to the coordinated ISTN by applying inter-network rate-splitting (RS) with a super-common message on top of intra-network RS with common/private messages. With the unified RS design for inter- and intra-networks, we jointly optimize the precoding and power allocation of the private/common/super-common messages to achieve max-min fairness among all SUs and CUs through successive convex approximation. By doing so, the power of the super-common message can be adjusted according to interference levels of the satellite towards CUs, thereby potentially mitigating inter-network interference. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority and robustness of our approach to cope with various interference and propagation conditions.

Multicarrier Rate-Splitting Multiple Access: Superiority of OFDM-RSMA over OFDMA and OFDM-NOMA

Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is a multiple access technique generalizing conventional techniques, such as, space-division multiple access (SDMA), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and physical layer multi-casting, which aims to address multi-user interference (MUI) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this study, we leverage the interference management capabilities of RSMA to tackle the issue of inter-carrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. We formulate a problem to find the optimal subcarrier and power allocation for downlink transmission in a two-user system using RSMA and OFDM and propose a weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE)-based algorithm to obtain a solution. The sum-rate performance of the proposed OFDM-RSMA scheme is compared with that of conventional orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and OFDM-NOMA by numerical results. It is shown that the proposed OFDM-RSMA outperforms OFDM-NOMA and OFDMA under ICI in diverse propagation channel conditions owing to its flexible structure and robust interference management capabilities.

Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request for Downlink Rate-Splitting Multiple Access

This work investigates the design of Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) strategies for downlink Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA). The existence of private and common stream as well as their conditioning for Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC), gives rise to an expanded set of opportunities for retransmission of failed packets. Specifically, we devise a scheme in which the retransmissions are scheduled through the common stream, which offers a higher success probability. With this, the common stream needs to carry both new and retransmitted bits, which leads to a layered HARQ (L-HARQ) strategy which is capable of trading off throughput and reliability. Simulation results demonstrate that the devised HARQ scheme outperforms RSMA with conventional HARQ, where each retransmission is handled independently through its own stream. It also helps in closing the throughput gap between HARQ and Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) in the high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) regime while also achieving a decreased Packet Error Rate (PER) and a lower latency.

Pareto Frontier for the Performance-Complexity Trade-off in Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology allowing to control the propagation environment in wireless communications. Recently, beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS) has been proposed to reach higher performance than conventional RIS, at the expense of higher circuit complexity. Multiple BD-RIS architectures have been developed with the goal of reaching a favorable trade-off between performance and circuit complexity. However, the fundamental limits of this trade-off are still unexplored. In this paper, we fill this gap by deriving the expression of the Pareto frontier for the performance-complexity trade-off in BD-RIS. Additionally, we characterize the optimal BD-RIS architectures reaching this Pareto frontier.

Weighted Sum-Rate Maximization for Rate-Splitting Multiple Access Based Multi-antenna Broadcast Channel with Confidential Messages

In this paper, we take all users' secrecy rate requirements into consideration and propose a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA)-based secure beamforming approach to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR), where multi-user interference (MUI) is partially decoded and partially treated as noise. User messages are split and encoded into common and private streams. Each user not only decodes the common stream and the intended private stream, but also eavesdrops other users' private streams. To solve the introduced non-convex security constraints in the formulated problem, a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based approach is first proposed to maximize the instantaneous WSR under perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). When only imperfect CSIT is available, to ensure robustness, a weighted ergodic sum-rate maximization problem is formulated. Then, a joint weighted minimum mean square error and SCA-based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the precoder. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared with baseline schemes, the performance advantage of the proposed RSMA-based secure beamforming design has been shown in terms of WSR and robustness to channel errors while ensuring all users' security requirements thanks to its powerful interference management capability.

Discrete-Value Group and Fully Connected Architectures for Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) allow controlling the propagation environment in wireless networks through reconfigurable elements. Recently, beyond diagonal RISs (BD-RISs) have been proposed as novel RIS architectures whose scattering matrix is not limited to being diagonal. However, BDRISs have been studied assuming continuous-value scattering matrices, which are hard to implement in practice. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing two solutions to realize discrete-value group and fully connected RISs. First, we propose scalar-discrete RISs, in which each entry of the RIS impedance matrix is independently discretized. Second, we propose vector-discrete RISs, where the entries in each group of the RIS impedance matrix are jointly discretized. In both solutions, the codebook is designed offline such as to minimize the distortion caused in the RIS impedance matrix by the discretization operation. Numerical results show that vector-discrete RISs achieve higher performance than scalar discrete RISs at the cost of increased optimization complexity. Furthermore, fewer resolution bits per impedance are necessary to achieve the performance upper bound as the group size of the group connected architecture increases. In particular, only a single resolution bit is sufficient in fully connected RISs to approximately achieve the performance upper bound.

Transmitter Side Beyond-Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for Massive MIMO Networks

This letter focuses on a transmitter or base station (BS) side beyond-diagonal reflecting intelligent surface (BD-RIS) deployment strategy to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) of a time-division-duplex massive multiple-input multiple-output (MaMIMO) network. In this strategy, the active antenna array utilizes a BD-RIS at the BS to serve multiple users in the downlink. Based on the knowledge of statistical channel state information (CSI), the BD-RIS coefficients matrix is optimized by employing a novel manifold algorithm, and the power control coefficients are then optimized with the objective of maximizing the minimum SE. Through numerical results we illustrate the SE performance of the proposed transmission framework and compare it with that of a conventional MaMIMO transmission for different network settings.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Multi-user Massive MIMO with Channel Aging

The design of beamforming for downlink multi-user massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relies on accurate downlink channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter (CSIT). In fact, it is difficult for the base station (BS) to obtain perfect CSIT due to user mobility, and latency/feedback delay (between downlink data transmission and CSI acquisition). Hence, robust beamforming under imperfect CSIT is needed. In this paper, considering multiple antennas at all nodes (base station and user terminals), we develop a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for massive MIMO under imperfect CSIT, where the transmit and receive beamforming are jointly designed to maximize the average information rate of all users. Leveraging this DRL-based framework, interference management is explored and three DRL-based schemes, namely the distributed-learning-distributed-processing scheme, partial-distributed-learning-distributed-processing, and central-learning distributed-processing scheme, are proposed and analyzed. This paper 1) highlights the fact that the DRL-based strategies outperform the random action-chosen strategy and the delay-sensitive strategy named as sample-and-hold (SAH) approach, and achieved over 90% of the information rate of two selected benchmarks with lower complexity: the zero-forcing channel-inversion (ZF-CI) with perfect CSIT and the Greedy Beam Selection strategy, 2) demonstrates the inherent robustness of the proposed designs in the presence of channel aging. 3) conducts detailed convergence and scalability analysis on the proposed framework.

Network Slicing for eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC: An Uplink Rate-Splitting Multiple Access Approach

There are three generic services in 5G: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). To guarantee the performance of heterogeneous services, network slicing is proposed to allocate resources to different services. Network slicing is typically done in an orthogonal multiple access (OMA) fashion, which means different services are allocated non-interfering resources. However, as the number of users grows, OMA-based slicing is not always optimal, and a non-orthogonal scheme may achieve a better performance. This work aims to analyse the performances of different slicing schemes in uplink, and a promising scheme based on rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is studied. RSMA can provide a more flexible decoding order and theoretically has the largest achievable rate region than OMA and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) without time-sharing. Hence, RSMA has the potential to increase the rate of users requiring different services. In addition, it is not necessary to decode the two split streams of one user successively, so RSMA lets suitable users split messages and designs an appropriate decoding order depending on the service requirements. This work shows that for network slicing RSMA can outperform NOMA counterpart, and obtain significant gains over OMA in some region.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for 6G Networks: Ten Promising Scenarios and Applications

In the upcoming 6G era, multiple access (MA) will play an essential role in achieving high throughput performances required in a wide range of wireless applications. Since MA and interference management are closely related issues, the conventional MA techniques are limited in that they cannot provide near-optimal performance in universal interference regimes. Recently, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been gaining much attention. RSMA splits an individual message into two parts: a common part, decodable by every user, and a private part, decodable only by the intended user. Each user first decodes the common message and then decodes its private message by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC). By doing so, RSMA not only embraces the existing MA techniques as special cases but also provides significant performance gains by efficiently mitigating inter-user interference in a broad range of interference regimes. In this article, we first present the theoretical foundation of RSMA. Subsequently, we put forth four key benefits of RSMA: spectral efficiency, robustness, scalability, and flexibility. Upon this, we describe how RSMA can enable ten promising scenarios and applications along with future research directions to pave the way for 6G.

A Dynamic Grouping Strategy for Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Hybrid Transmitting and Reflecting Mode

Beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) is a novel branch of RIS which breaks through the limitation of traditional RIS with diagonal scattering matrices. However, the existing research focuses on BD-RIS with fixed architectures regardless of channel state information (CSI), which limit the achievable performance of BD-RIS. To solve this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel dynamically group-connected BD-RIS based on a dynamic grouping strategy. Specifically, RIS antennas are dynamically divided into several subsets adapting to the CSI, yielding a permuted block-diagonal scattering matrix. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed dynamically group-connected BD-RIS, we propose an efficient algorithm to optimize the BD-RIS with dynamic grouping for a BD-RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output system. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamically group-connected architecture outperforms fixed group-connected architectures.

Closed-Form Global Optimization of Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) allow controlling the propagation environment in wireless networks by tuning multiple reflecting elements. RISs have been traditionally realized through single connected architectures, mathematically characterized by a diagonal scattering matrix. Recently, beyond diagonal RISs (BD-RISs) have been proposed as a novel branch of RISs whose scattering matrix is not limited to be diagonal, which creates new benefits and opportunities for RISs. Efficient BD-RIS architectures have been realized based on group and fully connected reconfigurable impedance networks. However, a closed-form solution for the global optimal scattering matrix of these architectures is not yet available. In this paper, we provide such a closed-form solution proving that the theoretical performance upper bounds can be exactly achieved for any channel realization. We first consider the received signal power maximization in single-user single-input single-output (SISO) systems aided by a BD-RIS working in reflective or transmissive mode. Then, we extend our solution to single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. We show that our algorithm is less complex than the iterative optimization algorithms employed in the previous literature. The complexity of our algorithm grows linearly (resp. cubically) with the number of RIS elements in the case of group (resp. fully) connected architectures.

Machine Learning-Based CSI Feedback With Variable Length in FDD Massive MIMO

To fully unlock the benefits of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks, downlink channel state information (CSI) is required at the base station (BS). In frequency division duplex (FDD) systems, the CSI is acquired through a feedback signal from the user equipment (UE). However, this may lead to an important overhead in FDD massive MIMO systems. Focusing on these systems, in this study, we propose a novel strategy to design the CSI feedback. Our strategy allows to optimally design variable length feedback, that is promising compared to fixed feedback since users experience channel matrices differently sparse. Specifically, principal component analysis (PCA) is used to compress the channel into a latent space with adaptive dimensionality. To quantize this compressed channel, the feedback bits are smartly allocated to the latent space dimensions by minimizing the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) distortion. Finally, the quantization codebook is determined with k-means clustering. Numerical simulations show that our strategy improves the zero-forcing beamforming sum rate by 17%, compared to CsiNetPro. The number of model parameters is reduced by 23.4 times, thus causing a significantly smaller offloading overhead. At the same time, PCA is characterized by a lightweight unsupervised training, requiring eight times fewer training samples than CsiNetPro.

Overhead-Free Blockage Detection and Precoding Through Physics-Based Graph Neural Networks: LIDAR Data Meets Ray Tracing

In this letter, we address blockage detection and precoder design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) links, without communication overhead required. Blockage detection is achieved by classifying light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data through a physics-based graph neural network (GNN). For precoder design, a preliminary channel estimate is obtained by running ray tracing on a 3D surface obtained from LIDAR data. This estimate is successively refined and the precoder is designed accordingly. Numerical simulations show that blockage detection is successful with 95% accuracy. Our digital precoding achieves 90% of the capacity and analog precoding outperforms previous works exploiting LIDAR for precoder design.

Joint Transmit and Receive Beamforming Design in Full-Duplex Integrated Sensing and Communications

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a solution to realize the sensing capability required for emerging applications in wireless networks, while efficiently utilizing the available spectral, hardware and energy resources. A commonly studied scenario in the ISAC literature involves a transceiver (e.g., a base station) serving a communication user, while simultaneously sensing targets from the reflected echo signals, by acting as a mono-static radar. However, as signal transmission durations are typically much longer than the radar echo round-trip times, the radar returns are drowned by the strong self interference (SI) from the transmitter - a phenomenon termed the echo-miss problem. A promising approach involves the ISAC transceiver to be full-duplex (FD), and in this paper we jointly design the transmit and receive beamformers at the transceiver, transmit precoder at the uplink user, and receive combiner at the downlink user to simultaneously (a) maximize the uplink and downlink rate, (b) maximize the transmit and receive radar beampattern power at the target, and (c) suppress the residual SI. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed design can effectively achieve up to 60 dB digital-domain SI cancellation, a higher average sum-rate, and more accurate radar parameter estimation compared with previous ISAC FD studies.
