The variety of group actions on all algebraic real hyperbolic spaces

For a cardinal $\kappa$, denote by $\mathbf{H}^\kappa$ the algebraic real hyperbolic space of dimension $\kappa$. For a topological group $\Gamma$, we study the set of continuous representations $\Gamma \to \operatorname{Isom}(\mathbf{H}^\kappa)$ up to continuous self-representations $\operatorname{Isom}(\mathbf{H}^\kappa)\to \operatorname{Isom}(\mathbf{H}^\kappa)$. The novelty of this work relies in considering simultaneously all cardinals, finite or infinite. We will endow this set of classes of representations with a natural topology, and show that this character variety is compact. This will also enable us to recover all previous compactifications of actions on $\mathbf{H}^n$ by certain actions on real trees for the equivariant Gromov-Hausdorff topology. A class of representations recovers in particular the homothety class of its marked length spectrum. We will define the notion of algebraic cross-ratio and prove a GNS-embedding result, enabling us to generalize some rigidity properties of the marked length spectrum. We will also introduce a notion of abstract cross-ratio, and use it to show that a wide class of groups $\Gamma$ (characterized by the existence of what we call a $3$-full action on a $\operatorname{CAT}(-1)$-space) admit at most one class of irreducible representations into $\operatorname{Isom}(\mathbf{H}^\kappa)$ whose boundedness properties are controlled by those of $(X,d)$. We will apply this to topological groups $\Gamma$ such as the isometry group $\operatorname{Isom}(\mathbf{H}^\kappa)$ itself, the automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(T_\omega)$ of the simplicial tree with countably infinite valency, and the automorphism group $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{K}, \lvert\cdot \rvert)$ of the projective line over a non-Archimedean field.

Hyperbolic Simplices of Maximal Inradius

For $n\in \mathbb{N}$, consider a hyperbolic $n$-dimensional simplex $\Delta$, defined by $1+n$ points in the compactified hyperbolic space $\mathbf{H}^n \sqcup \partial \mathbf{H}^n$. For each integer $m\le n$, denote $\delta^n_m(\Delta)\in [0,+\infty]$ the Hausdorff distance between its skeleta of dimensions $n$ and $m$. In particular, $\delta^n_{n-1}(\Delta)$ is its inradius. The maximum of $\delta^n_m(\Delta)$ over $\Delta\in (\mathbf{H}^n \sqcup \partial \mathbf{H}^n)^{1+n}$ is denoted $\mu^n_m\in [0,+\infty]$. We first show that $\Delta$ has maximal inradius $\delta^n_{n-1}(\Delta)=\mu^n_m$ if and only if its is (total) ideal and regular; for which the inradius is given by $\tanh \mu^n_{n-1} = 1/n$. We deduce that $\Delta$ has maximal $\delta^n_{n-1}(\Delta)=\mu^n_m$ if and only if it is (total) ideal and regular. We compute that the maximal distance to the $1$-skeleton $\mu^n_1$ is given by $\left(\tanh \mu^n_1\right)^2 = (n-1)/(2n)$ and deduce that those are uniformly bounded by $\lim_{n} \mu^n_1 = \log(1+\sqrt{2})$.

Homeomorphism groups of basilica, rabbit and airplane Julia sets

The airplane, the basilica and the Douady rabbit (and, more generally, rabbits with more than two ears) are well-known Julia sets of complex quadratic polynomials. In this paper we study the groups of all homeomorphisms of such fractals and of all automorphisms of their laminations. In particular, we identify them with some kaleidoscopic group or universal groups and thus realize them as Polish permutation groups. From these identifications, we deduce algebraic, topological and geometric properties of these groups.

The Polish topology of the isometry group of the infinite dimensional hyperbolic space

We consider the isometry group of the infinite dimensional separable hyperbolic space with its Polish topology. This topology is given by the pointwise convergence. For non-locally compact Polish groups, some striking phenomena like automatic continuity or extreme amenability may happen. Our leading idea is to compare this topological group with usual Lie groups on one side and with non-Archimedean infinite dimensional groups like $\mathcal{S}_\infty$, the group of all permutations of a countable set on the other side. Our main results are Automatic continuity (any homomorphism to a separable group is continuous), minimality of the Polish topology, identification of its universal Furstenberg boundary as the closed unit ball of a separable Hilbert space with its weak topology, identification of its universal minimal flow as the completion of some suspension of the action of the additive group of the reals on its universal minimal flow. All along the text, we lead a parallel study with the sibling group of isometries of a separable Hilbert space.

Boundary maps and maximal representations on infinite dimensional Hermitian symmetric spaces

We define a Toledo number for actions of surface groups and complex hyperbolic lattices on infinite dimensional Hermitian symmetric spaces, which allows us to define maximal representations. When the target is not of tube type we show that there cannot be Zariski-dense maximal representations, and whenever the existence of a boundary map can be guaranteed, the representation preserves a finite dimensional totally geodesic subspace on which the action is maximal. In the opposite direction we construct examples of geometrically dense maximal representation in the infinite dimensional Hermitian symmetric space of tube type and finite rank. Our approach is based on the study of boundary maps, that we are able to construct in low ranks or under some suitable Zariski-density assumption, circumventing the lack of local compactness in the infinite dimensional setting.

A group with Property (T) acting on the circle

We exhibit a topological group $G$ with property (T) acting non-elementarily and continuously on the circle. This group is an uncountable totally disconnected closed subgroup of $\operatorname{Homeo}^+(\mathbf{S}^1)$. It has a large unitary dual since it separates points. It comes from homeomorphisms of dendrites and a kaleidoscopic construction. Alternatively, it can be seen as the group of elements preserving some specific geodesic lamination of the hyperbolic disk. We also prove that this action is unique up to conjugation and that it can't be smoothened in any way. Finally, we determine the universal minimal flow of the group $G$.

Representations of infinite dimension orthogonal groups of quadratic forms with finite index

We study representations $G\to H$ where $G$ is either a simple Lie group with real rank at least 2 or an infinite dimensional orthogonal group of some quadratic form of finite index at least 2 and $H$ is such an orthogonal group as well. The real, complex and quaternionic cases are considered. Contrarily to the rank one case, we show that there is no exotic such representations and we classify these representations. On the way, we make a detour and prove that the projective orthogonal groups $\mathop{PO}_\mathbf{K}(p,\infty)$ or their orthochronous component (where $\mathbf{K}$ denotes the real, complex or quaternionic numbers) are Polish groups that are topologically simple but not abstractly simple.

Topological properties of Wazewski dendrite groups

Homeomorphism groups of generalized Wa\.zewski dendrites act on the infinite countable set of branch points of the dendrite and thus have a nice Polish topology. In this paper, we study them in the light of this Polish topology. The group of the universal Wa\.zewski dendrite $D_\infty$ is more characteristic than the others because it is the unique one with a dense conjugacy class. For this group $G_\infty$, we show some of its topological properties like existence of a comeager conjugacy class, the Steinhaus property, automatic continuity and the small index subgroup property. Moreover, we identify the universal minimal flow of $G_\infty$. This allows us to prove that point-stabilizers in $G_\infty$ are amenable and to describe the universal Furstenberg boundary of $G_\infty$.

CAT(0) cube complexes and inner amenability

We here consider inner amenability from a geometric and group theoretical perspective. We prove that for every non-elementary action of a group $G$ on a finite dimensional irreducible CAT(0) cube complex, there is a nonempty $G$-invariant closed convex subset such that every conjugation invariant mean on $G$ gives full measure to the stabilizer of each point of this subset. Specializing our result to trees leads to a complete characterization of inner amenability for HNN-extensions and amalgamated free products. One novelty of the proof is that it makes use of the existence of certain idempotent conjugation-invariant means on $G$. We additionally obtain a complete characterization of inner amenability for permutational wreath product groups. One of the main ingredients used for this is a general lemma which we call the location lemma, which allows us to "locate" conjugation invariant means on a group $G$ relative to a given normal subgroup $N$ of $G$. We give several further applications of the location lemma beyond the aforementioned characterization of inner amenable wreath products.

A new lattice invariant for lattices in totally disconnected locally compact groups

We introduce and explore a natural rank for totally disconnected locally compact groups called the bounded conjugacy rank. This rank is shown to be a lattice invariant for lattices in sigma compact totally disconnected locally compact groups; that is to say, for a given sigma compact totally disconnected locally compact group, some lattice has bounded conjugacy rank n if and only if every lattice has bounded conjugacy rank n. Several examples are then presented.

Kaleidoscopic groups: permutation groups constructed from dendrite homeomorphisms

Given a transitive permutation group, a fundamental object for studying its higher transitivity properties is the permutation action of its isotropy subgroup. We reverse this relationship and introduce a universal construction of infinite permutation groups that takes as input a given system of imprimitivity for its isotropy subgroup. This produces vast families kaleidoscopic groups. We investigate their algebraic properties, such as simplicity and oligomorphy; their homological properties, such as acyclicity or contrariwise large Schur multipliers; their topological properties, such as unique polishability. Our construction is carried out within the framework of homeomorphism groups of topological dendrites.

Structural properties of dendrite groups

Let G be the homeomorphism group of a dendrite. We study the normal subgroups of G. For instance, there are uncountably many non-isomorphic such groups G that are simple groups. Moreover, these groups can be chosen so that any isometric G-action on any metric space has a bounded orbit. In particular they have the fixed point property (FH).

Almost algebraic actions of algebraic groups and applications to algebraic representations

Let G be an algebraic group over a complete separable valued field k. We discuss the dynamics of the G-action on spaces of probability measures on algebraic G-varieties. We show that the stabilizers of measures are almost algebraic and the orbits are separated by open invariant sets. We discuss various applications, including existence results for algebraic representations of amenable ergodic actions. The latter provides an essential technical step in the recent generalization of Margulis-Zimmer super-rigidity phenomenon due to Bader and Furman.

Group actions on dendrites and curves

We establish obstructions for groups to act by homeomorphisms on dendrites. For instance, lattices in higher rank simple Lie groups will always fix a point or a pair. The same holds for irreducible lattices in products of connected groups. Further results include a Tits alternative and a description of the topological dynamics. We briefly discuss to what extent our results hold for more general topological curves.

Groups acting on spaces of non-positive curvature

In this survey article, we present some panorama of groups acting on metric spaces of non-positive curvature. We introduce the main examples and their rigidity properties , we show the links between algebraic or analytic properties of the group and geometric properties of the space. Finally, we conclude with a few conjectures in the subject.

Amenable Invariant Random Subgroups

We show that an amenable Invariant Random Subgroup of a locally compact second countable group lives in the amenable radical. This answers a question raised in the introduction of the paper "Kesten's Theorem for Invariant Random Subgroup" by Abert, Glasner and Virag. We also consider, in the opposite direction, property (T), and prove a similar statement for this property. The Appendix by Phillip Wesolek proves that the set of amenable subgroups is a Borel subset in the Chabauty topology.

Infinite dimensional Riemannian symmetric spaces with fixed-sign curvature operator

We associate to any Riemannian symmetric space (of finite or infinite dimension) a L$^*$-algebra, under the assumption that the curvature operator has a fixed sign. L$^*$-algebras are Lie algebras with a pleasant Hilbert space structure. The L$^*$-algebra that we construct is a complete local isomorphism invariant and allows us to classify Riemannian symmetric spaces with fixed-sign curvature operator. The case of nonpositive curvature is emphasized.
