Distribution Amplitudes of Heavy Mesons and Quarkonia on the Light Front

The ladder kernel of the Bethe-Salpeter equation is amended by introducing a different flavor dependence of the dressing functions in the heavy-quark sector. Compared with earlier work this allows for the simultaneous calculation of the mass spectrum and leptonic decay constants of light pseudoscalar mesons, the $D_u$, $D_s$, $B_u$, $B_s$ and $B_c$ mesons and the heavy quarkonia $η_c$ and $η_b$ within the same framework at a physical pion mass. The corresponding Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes are projected onto the light front and we reconstruct the distribution amplitudes of the mesons in the full theory. A comparison with the first inverse moment of the heavy meson distribution amplitude in heavy quark effective theory is made.

Interplay of dynamical and explicit chiral symmetry breaking effects on a quark

The relative contributions of explicit and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QCD models of the quark-gap equation are studied in dependence of frequently employed ansätze for the dressed interaction and quark-gluon vertex. The explicit symmetry breaking contributions are defined by a constituent-quark sigma term whereas the combined effects of explicit and dynamical symmetry breaking are described by a Euclidean constituent-mass solution. We extend this study of the gap equation to a quark-gluon vertex beyond the Abelian approximation complemented with numerical gluon- and ghost-dressing functions from lattice QCD. We find that the ratio of the sigma term over the Euclidean mass is largely independent of nonperturbative interaction and vertex models for current-quark masses, $m_{u,d}(μ) \leq m(μ) \leq m_b(μ)$, and equal contributions of explicit and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking occur at $m(μ) \approx 400$~MeV. For massive solutions of the gap equation with lattice propagators this value decreases to about 200~MeV.

Structure of the nucleon's low-lying excitations

A continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory is used to perform a comparative study of the four lightest $(I=1/2,J^P = 1/2^\pm)$ baryon isospin-doublets in order to elucidate their structural similarities and differences. Such analyses predict the presence of nonpointlike, electromagnetically-active quark-quark (diquark) correlations within all baryons; and in these doublets, isoscalar-scalar, isovector-pseudovector, isoscalar-pseudoscalar, and vector diquarks can all play a role. In the two lightest $(1/2,1/2^+)$ doublets, however, scalar and pseudovector diquarks are overwhelmingly dominant. The associated rest-frame wave functions are largely $S$-wave in nature; and the first excited state in this $1/2^+$ channel has the appearance of a radial excitation of the ground state. The two lightest $(1/2,1/2^-)$ doublets fit a different picture: accurate estimates of their masses are obtained by retaining only pseudovector diquarks; in their rest frames, the amplitudes describing their dressed-quark cores contain roughly equal fractions of even- and odd-parity diquarks; and the associated wave functions are predominantly $P$-wave in nature, but possess measurable $S$-wave components. Moreover, the first excited state in each negative-parity channel has little of the appearance of a radial excitation. In quantum field theory, all differences between positive- and negative-parity channels must owe to chiral symmetry breaking, which is overwhelmingly dynamical in the light-quark sector. Consequently, experiments that can validate the contrasts drawn herein between the structure of the four lightest $(1/2,1/2^\pm)$ doublets will prove valuable in testing links between emergent mass generation and observable phenomena and, plausibly, thereby revealing dynamical features of confinement.

Mass spectrum and decay constants of radially excited vector mesons

We calculate the masses and weak decay constants of flavorless ground and radially excited $J^P=1^-$ mesons and the corresponding quantities for the K^*, within a Poincaré covariant continuum framework based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We use in both, the quark's gap equation and the meson bound-state equation, an infrared massive and finite interaction in the leading symmetry-preserving truncation. While our numerical results are in rather good agreement with experimental values where they are available, no single parametrization of the QCD inspired interaction reproduces simultaneously the ground and excited mass spectrum, which confirms earlier work on pseudoscalar mesons. This feature being a consequence of the lowest truncation, we pin down the range and strength of the interaction in both cases to identify common qualitative features that may help to tune future interaction models beyond the rainbow-ladder approximation.

Charmed mesons with a symmetry-preserving contact interaction

A symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction is used to study charmed heavy-light mesons. The contact interaction is a representation of nonperturbative kernels used in Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations of QCD. The Dyson-Schwinger equation is solved for the $u,\,d,\,s$ and $c$ quark propagators and the bound-state Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes respecting spacetime-translation invariance and the Ward-Green-Takahashi identities associated with global symmetries of QCD are obtained to calculate masses and electroweak decay constants of the pseudoscalar $π,\,K$, $D$ and $D_s$ and vector $ρ$, $K^*$, $D^*$, and $D^*_s$ mesons. The predictions of the model are in good agreement with available experimental and lattice QCD data.

Couplings between the $ρ$ and $D$- and $D^\ast$-mesons

We compute couplings between the $ρ$-meson and $D$- and $D^\ast$-mesons - $D^{(\ast)}ρD^{(\ast)}$ - that are relevant to phenomenological meson-exchange models used to analyse nucleon-$D$-meson scattering and explore the possibility of exotic charmed nuclei. Our framework is built from elements constrained by Dyson-Schwinger equation studies in QCD, and therefore expresses a consistent, simultaneous description of light- and heavy-quarks and the states they constitute, We find that all interactions, including the three independent $D^{\ast} ρ\,D^{\ast}$ couplings, differ markedly amongst themselves in strength and also in range, as measured by their evolution with $ρ$-meson virtuality. As a consequence, it appears that no single coupling strength or parametrization can realistically be employed in the study of interactions between $D^{(\ast)}$-mesons and matter.

Excited hadrons and the analytical structure of bound-state interaction kernels

We highlight Hermiticity issues in bound-state equations whose kernels are subject to a highly asymmetric mass and momentum distribution and whose eigenvalue spectrum becomes complex for radially excited states. We trace back the presence of imaginary components in the eigenvalues and wave functions to truncation artifacts and suggest how they can be eliminated in the case of charmed mesons. The solutions of the gap equation in the complex plane, which play a crucial role in the analytic structure of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel, are discussed for several interaction models and qualitatively and quantitatively compared to analytic continuations by means of complex-conjugate pole models fitted to real solutions.

Contemporary continuum QCD approaches to excited hadrons

Amongst the bound states produced by the strong interaction, radially excited meson and nucleon states offer an important phenomenological window into the long-range behavior of the coupling constant in Quantum Chromodynamics. We here report on some technical details related to the computation of the bound state's eigenvalue spectrum in the framework of Bethe-Salpeter and Faddeev equations.

Pseudoscalar mesons with symmetric bound state vertex functions on the light front

We study the electromagnetic form factors, decay constants and charge radii of the pion and kaon within the framework of light-front field theory formalism where we use an ansatz for the quark-meson interaction bound-state function which is symmetric under exchange of quark and antiquark momentum. The above mentioned observables are evaluated for the $+$ component of the electromagnetic current, $J^+$, in the Breit frame. We also check the invariance of these observables in other frames, whereby both the valance and the non-valence contributions have to be taken into account, and study the sensitivity of the electromagnetic form factors and charge radius to the model's parameters; namely, the quark masses, $m_u=m_d$, $m_{\bar s}$, and the regulator mass, $m_R$. It is found that after a fine tuning of the regulator mass, i.e. $m_R=0.6$ GeV, the model is suitable to fit the available experimental data within the theoretical uncertainties of both the pion and kaon.

Completing the picture of the Roper resonance

We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed-quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud materially affects long-wavelength characteristics of the Roper electroproduction amplitudes but the quark core is revealed to probes with $Q^2 \gtrsim 3 m_N^2$.

Ward identities, $\bm{ B\to V}$ transition form factors and applications

Long distance effects are studied in the rare exclusive semileptonic $B_{(d,s)}\to V \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays, where $V$ denotes a $K^*$ or $ϕ$ meson. The form factors, which describe the meson transition amplitudes in the effective Hamiltonian approach, are calculated by means of Ward identities, experimental constraints and extrapolated within a general vector meson dominance framework. These form factors are then compared to the ones obtained in Lattice QCD simulations, with Light Cone Sum Rules and a Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. Additionally, the $B_d\to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $B_s\to ϕ\ell^+ \ell^- $ branching ratios are computed and the differential branching fractions are given as a function of the squared-momentum transfer.

Pion structure in the nuclear medium

Using the light-front pion wave function based on a Bethe-Salpeter amplitude model, we study the properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter. The pion model we adopt is well constrained by previous studies to explain the pion properties in vacuum. In order to consistently incorporate the constituent up and down quarks of the pion immersed in symmetric nuclear matter, we use the quark-meson coupling model, which has been widely applied to various hadronic and nuclear phenomena in a nuclear medium with success. We predict the in-medium modifications of the pion lectromagnetic form factor, charge radius and weak decay constant in symmetric nuclear matter.

Electromagnetic Structure of the Pion

In this work, we analyze the electromagnetic structure of the pion. We calculate its electromagnetic radius and electromagnetic form factor in low and intermediate momentum range. Such observables are determined by means of a theoretical model that takes into account the constituent quark and antiquark of the pion within the formalism of light-front field theory. In particular, we consider a nonsymmetrical vertex in this model, with which we calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in an optimized way, so that we obtain a value closer to the experimental charge radius of the pion. The theoretical calculations are also compared with the most recent experimental data involving the pion electromagnetic form factor and the results show very good agreement.

The Electromagnetic Form Factor of the Kaon in the Light-Front Approach

The kaon electromagnetic form factor is calculated within a light-front constituent quark model (LFCQM). The electromagnetic components of the current are extracted from the Feynman triangle diagram within the light-front approach. We also obtain the electroweak decay constant and the charge radius for the kaon in the light-front approach. In this work, the kaon observables are calculated and a fairly good agreement is obtained with a very higher accuracy when compared with the experimental data.

Pion and kaon elastic form factors in a refined light-front model

Within the framework of light-front field theory, we reassess the electromagnetic form factors of the pion and kaon. Comparison with experiment is made for the full range of momentum transfer, q^2<0, including recent data. The light-front model's single regulator mass, m_R, of the \bar qq bound-state vertex function is initially adjusted to reproduce the weak decay constants, f_π and f_K, and both meson's charge radii, r_π and r_K. We study the behavior of these observables under variation of the quark masses and find an optimized parameter set, m_u=m_d, m_s and m_R, for which they are in sensibly better agreement with experiment than in a previous analysis; a feature also observed for the elastic form factors, in particular at small q^2. This model refinement is important in view of an extension to vector and heavy-light mesons.

Heavy-quark symmetries in the light of nonperturbative QCD approaches

We critically review the validity of heavy-quark spin and flavor symmetries in heavy-light decay constants, form factors and effective couplings obtained within a nonperturbative framework, the ingredients of which are all motivated by Dyson-Schwinger equations studies of QCD. Along the way, we make new predictions for two effective nonphysical couplings: g_{DsDK} = 24.1+2.5/-1.6 and g_{BsBK} = 33.3+4.0/-3.7.
