Operadic Calculus for Higher Colour-Kinematics Duality

The search for algebraic foundations of colour-kinematics duality and the double-copy construction has brought into focus a generalization of Batalin--Vilkovisky algebras, referred to here as coexact BV-algebras and as $\textrm{BV}^\square$-algebras in other sources. While these structures capture the cubic sector, they fail to encode higher-valence phenomena, for which a homotopy-theoretic extension becomes necessary. This work introduces a conceptual notion of homotopy coexact BV-algebra, defined through the homotopical interplay of commutative and BV structures, and provides a concrete model in terms of generators and relations, obtained through an extension the theory of Koszul duality for operads. The resulting framework enables the systematic use of homotopical tools -- $\infty$-morphisms, homotopy transfer, rectification, and deformation theory -- and naturally accommodates the quartic-level structures recently identified in Yang--Mills theory.

Effective integration of Lie type algebras

This is a short survey on the recent developments made in the integration theory with effective formulas of algebraic structures stronger or higher than Lie algebras.

Integration theory of Lie-graph algebras

We develop the Lie theory of Lie-admissible algebras whose product is enriched with higher operations modeled on directed graphs with a view to apply it to the deformation theories controlled by this kind of Lie algebras. We produce effective formulas for their exponential map, their gauge group structure and the action on Maurer--Cartan elements. The main motivation and range of applications lies in the deformation theory of types of bialgebras which is done in a sequel article. This work extends the case of pre-Lie algebra structures which appear in the deformation theory of operadic algebras.

Universal constructions in homotopical algebra

We apply the effective integration theory of Lie-graph algebras, developed recently by the authors, to the deformation and homotopy theories of types of bialgebras, that is structures controlled by a properad, like associative bialgebras, (involutive) Lie bialgebras, Frobenius bialgebras, double Poisson bialgebras, pre-Calabi--Yau algebras, quantum Airy structures, etc. In these cases, we provide their associated Deligne groupoid with an explicit homotopical description. We settle the Koszul hierarchy and the twisting procedure on the properadic level. We also give a conceptual construction of the homotopy transfer theorem in terms of gauge actions. This work extends the formulas for the deformation theory of operadic algebras.

Simplicial properadic homotopy

In this paper, we settle the homotopy properties of the infinity-morphisms of homotopy (bial)-gebras over properads, i.e. algebraic structures made up of operations with several inputs and outputs. We start by providing the literature with characterizations for the various types of infinity-morphisms, the most seminal one being the equivalence between infinity-quasi-isomorphisms and zig-zags of quasi-isomorphisms which plays a key role in the study the formality property. We establish a simplicial enrichment for the categories of gebras over some cofibrant properads together with their infinity-morphisms, whose homotopy category provides us with the localisation with respect to infinity-quasi-isomorphisms. These results extend to the properadic level known properties for operads, but the lack of the rectification procedure in this setting forces us to use different methods.

Maurer-Cartan methods in deformation theory: the twisting procedure

This monograph provides an overview on the Maurer-Cartan methods in algebra, geometry, topology, and mathematical physics. It offers a conceptual, exhaustive and gentle treatment of the twisting procedure, which functorially creates new differential graded Lie algebras, associative algebras or operads (as well as their homotopy versions) from a Maurer-Cartan element. The twisting procedure for (homotopy) associative algebras or (homotopy) Lie algebras is described by means of the action of the biggest deformation gauge group ever considered. We give a criterion on quadratic operads for the existence of a meaningful twisting procedure of their associated categories of algebras. And, we introduce the twisting procedure for operads \`a la Willwacher using a new and simpler presentation, which provides us with a wide source of motivating examples related to graph homology, both recovering known graph complexes (due to Kontsevich) and introducing some new ones. This book starts with elementary surveys on gauge theory and deformation theory using differential graded Lie algebras in order to ease the way to the theory. It finishes with concise surveys on the fundamental theorem of deformation theory, higher Lie theory, rational homotopy theory, simplicial theory of homotopy algebras, and the Floer cohomology of Lagrangian submanifolds, to illustrate deep examples of applications.

Pre-Calabi--Yau algebras and homotopy double Poisson gebras

We prove that the notion of a curved pre-Calabi--Yau algebra is equivalent to the notion of a curved homotopy double Poisson gebra, thereby settling the equivalence between the two ways to define derived noncommutative Poisson structures. We actually prove that the respective differential graded Lie algebras controlling both deformation theories are isomorphic. This allows us to apply the recent developments of the properadic calculus in order to establish the homotopical properties of curved pre-Calabi--Yau algebras: infinity-morphisms, homotopy transfer theorem, formality, Koszul hierarchy, and twisting procedure.

Higher Lie theory

We present a novel approach to the problem of integrating homotopy Lie algebras by representing the Maurer-Cartan space functor with a universal cosimplicial object. This recovers Getzler's original functor but allows us to prove the existence of additional, previously unknown, structures and properties. Namely, we introduce a well-behaved left adjoint functor, we establish functoriality with respect to infinity-morphisms, and we construct a coherent hierarchy of higher Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formulas. Thanks to these tools, we are able to establish the most important results of higher Lie theory. We use the recent developments of the operadic calculus, which leads us to explicit tree-wise formulas at all stage. We conclude by applying this theory to rational homotopy theory: the left adjoint functor is shown to provide us with homotopy Lie algebra models for topological spaces which faithfully capture their rational homotopy type.

Deformation theory of Cohomological Field Theories

We develop the deformation theory of cohomological field theories (CohFTs), which is done as a special case of a general deformation theory of morphisms of modular operads. This leads us to introduce two new natural extensions of the notion of a CohFT: homotopical (necessary to structure chain-level Gromov--Witten invariants) and quantum (with examples found in the works of Buryak--Rossi on integrable systems). We introduce a new version of Kontsevich's graph complex, enriched with tautological classes on the moduli spaces of stable curves. We use it to study a new universal deformation group which acts naturally on the moduli spaces of quantum homotopy CohFTs, by methods due to Merkulov--Willwacher. This group is shown to contain both the prounipotent Grothendieck--Teichm\"uller group and the Givental group.

Properadic homotopical calculus

In this paper, we initiate the generalisation of the operadic calculus which governs the properties of homotopy algebras to a properadic calculus which governs the properties of homotopy gebras over a properad. In this first article of a series, we generalise the seminal notion of infini-morphisms and the ubiquitous homotopy transfer theorem. As an application, we recover the homotopy properties of involutive Lie bialgebras developed by Cieliebak--Fukaya--Latschev and we produce new explicit formulas.

The diagonal of the associahedra

This paper introduces a new method to solve the problem of the approximation of the diagonal for face-coherent families of polytopes. We recover the classical cases of the simplices and the cubes and we solve it for the associahedra, also known as Stasheff polytopes. We show that it satisfies an easy-to-state cellular formula. For the first time, we endow a family of realizations of the associahedra (the Loday realizations) with a topological and cellular operad structure; it is shown to be compatible with the diagonal maps.

Monoidal structures on the categories of quadratic data

The notion of 2--monoidal category used here was introduced by B.~Vallette in 2007 for applications in the operadic context. The starting point for this article was a remark by Yu. Manin that in the category of quadratic algebras (that is, "quantum linear spaces") one can also define 2--monoidal structure(s) with rather unusual properties. Here we give a detailed exposition of these constructions, together with their generalisations to the case of quadratic operads. Their parallel exposition was motivated by the following remark. Several important operads/cooperads such as genus zero quantum cohomology operad, the operad classifying Gerstenhaber algebras, and more generally, (co)operads of homology/cohomology of some topological operads, start with collections of quadratic algebras/coalgebras rather than simply linear spaces. Suggested here enrichments of the categories to which components of these operads belong, as well of the operadic structures themselves, might lead to the better understanding of these fundamental objects. New version includes minor editorial changes and new references.

The twisting procedure

This paper provides a conceptual study of the twisting procedure, which amounts to create functorially new differential graded Lie algebras, associative algebras or operads (as well as their homotopy versions) from a Maurer--Cartan element. On the way, we settle the integration theory of complete pre-Lie algebras in order to describe this twisting procedure in terms of gauge group action. We give a criterion on quadratic operads for the existence of a meaningful twisting procedure of their associated categories of (homotopy) algebras. We also give a new presentation of the twisting procedure for operads \`a la Willwacher and we perform new homology computations of graph complexes.

Toric varieties of Loday's associahedra and noncommutative cohomological field theories

We introduce and study several new topological operads that should be regarded as nonsymmetric analogues of the operads of little 2-disks, framed little 2-disks, and Deligne-Mumford compactifications of moduli spaces of genus zero curves with marked points. These operads exhibit all the remarkable algebraic and geometric features that their classical analogues possess; in particular, it is possible to define a noncommutative analogue of the notion of cohomological field theory with similar Givental-type symmetries. This relies on rich geometry of the analogues of the Deligne-Mumford spaces, coming from the fact that they admit several equivalent interpretations: as the toric varieties of Loday's realisations of the associahedra, as the brick manifolds recently defined by Escobar, and as the De Concini-Procesi wonderful models for certain subspace arrangements.

Brown's moduli spaces of curves and the gravity operad

This paper is built on the following observation: the purity of the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of Brown's moduli spaces is essentially equivalent to the freeness of the dihedral operad underlying the gravity operad. We prove these two facts by relying on both the geometric and the algebraic aspects of the problem: the complete geometric description of the cohomology of Brown's moduli spaces and the coradical filtration of cofree cooperads. This gives a conceptual proof of an identity of Bergstr\"om-Brown which expresses the Betti numbers of Brown's moduli spaces via the inversion of a generating series. This also generalizes the Salvatore-Tauraso theorem on the nonsymmetric Lie operad.

Symmetric homotopy theory for operads

The purpose of this foundational paper is to introduce various notions and constructions in order to develop the homotopy theory for differential graded operads over any ring. The main new idea is to consider the action of the symmetric groups as part of the defining structure of an operad and not as the underlying category. We introduce a new dual category of higher cooperads, a new higher bar-cobar adjunction with the category of operads, and a new higher notion of homotopy operads, for which we establish the relevant homotopy properties. For instance, the higher bar-cobar construction provides us with a cofibrant replacement functor for operads over any ring. All these constructions are produced conceptually by applying the curved Koszul duality for colored operads. This paper is a first step toward a new Koszul duality theory for operads, where the action of the symmetric groups is properly taken into account.

Pre-Lie deformation theory

In this paper, we develop the deformation theory controlled by pre-Lie algebras; the main tool is a new integration theory for pre-Lie algebras. The main field of application lies in homotopy algebra structures over a Koszul operad; in this case, we provide a homotopical description of the associated Deligne groupoid. This permits us to give a conceptual proof, with complete formulae, of the Homotopy Transfer Theorem by means of gauge action. We provide a clear explanation of this latter ubiquitous result: there are two gauge elements whose action on the original structure restrict its inputs and respectively its output to the homotopy equivalent space. This implies that a homotopy algebra structure transfers uniformly to a trivial structure on its underlying homology if and only if it is gauge trivial; this is the ultimate generalization of the $dd^c$-lemma.

Homotopy theory of homotopy algebras

This paper studies the homotopy theory of algebras and homotopy algebras over an operad. It provides an exhaustive description of their higher homotopical properties using the more general notion of morphisms called infinity-morphisms. The method consists in using the operadic calculus to endow the category of coalgebras over the Koszul dual cooperad or the bar construction with a new type of model category structure, Quillen equivalent to that of algebras. We provide an explicit homotopy equivalence for infinity-morphisms, which gives a simple description of the homotopy category, and we endow the category of homotopy algebras with an infinity-category structure.
