On the $L$-embeddability of Lipschitz-free spaces in their biduals

A Banach space $X$ is $L$-embedded in its bidual if there is a projection $P\colon X^{**}\to X$ such that $\|x\|=\|Px\|+\|x-Px\|$ for all $x\in X^{**}$. We show that, as long as $X$ has dimension at least $2$, its Lipschitz-free space, denoted by $\mathcal{F}(X)$, is not $L$-embedded in its bidual. Our methods have applications to the problem of when the $L$-embeddability of $\mathcal{F}(M)$ passes to $\mathcal{F}(A)$ for a metric space $M$ and $A\subseteq M$. This is the case when $A$ is compact or when $A$ is geodesically closed.

Dynamical $\mathrm C^*$-algebras and coarse geometry

Both the uniform Roe algebras and the quasi-local algebras encode the large scale geometry of metric spaces. Whether these algebras coincide is a question which goes back to Roe and has only been recently solved by Ozawa. We propose a dynamical point of view on this problem. Given a set $X$, every map $h\colon X\to\mathbb{R}$ induces a one-parameter group $σ_h$ of automorphisms of $\mathcal{B}(\ell_2(X))$, given by conjugation by the diagonal unitaries $e^{ith}$, and we show that the operators which are continuity points of $σ_h$ are precisely the uniform Roe algebra of the pseudo-metric induced by $h$. If we moreover assume that $X$ is a uniformly locally finite metric space and $h$ is allowed to range over all coarse maps, this gives dynamical characterizations of both algebras: $\mathrm{C}^*_{ql}(X)$ consists exactly of the operators which are continuous for all such flows, while $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ consists exactly of norm limits of those which are analytic. The regularity conditions lying between continuity and analyticity then give rise to $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras between $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ and $\mathrm{C}^*_{ql}(X)$ which are invariant under bijective coarse equivalence, and we show that this scale is not degenerate: if $X$ is a coarse disjoint union of expander graphs, the algebra generated by operators which are analytic on a strip for every diagonal flow sits strictly between $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ and $\mathrm{C}^*_{ql}(X)$.

Dynamics in large scale geometry

We investigate the large scale geometry of certain metric spaces through the lens of dynamics. Our approach establishes a close connection between large scale dynamical phenomena and operator algebras by characterizing various large scale dynamic behaviors in terms of GNS representations of the uniform Roe algebras arising from natural canonical states. Our dynamical systems are given by the Stone-Čech boundary of metric spaces together with their inverse semigroup of partial translations. This defines a space of orbits and we characterize Hausdorffness and $T_1$-ness of this space by the failure of coarse embeddability of certain metric spaces. Surprisingly, while the orbit space has very weak separation properties, we show that it satisfies a certain ''localized version'' of Urysohn's lemma. We show that the topology of the space of orbits and quasi-orbits are given by the space of irreducible representations of uniform Roe algebras and by the space of their primitive ideals, respectively. As a highlight of the theory developed herein, we provide classes of spaces such that the prime ideals of their uniform Roe algebras are primitive. This is the case for instance of spaces whose orbit space is $T_1$.

On the uniform continuity of homeomorphisms between the spheres of $\ell_\infty^k$ and $\ell_1^k$

We consider the problem of whether there is a sequence of homeomorphisms $(F_k)_k$ between the unit spheres of the $k$-dimensional Banach spaces $\ell_\infty^k$ and $\ell_1^k$ which is also equi-uniformly continuous. We prove that this cannot be the case if the sequence $(F_k)_k$ either (1) does not increase support sizes (which is a property strictly weaker than support preservation) or (2) is step preserving (which is a property strictly weaker than being equivariant with respect to permutations of the canonical basis). We also provide quantitative estimates relating the moduli of uniform continuity of the maps to the dimension of the spaces. This gives partial answers to a question of W. B. Johnson and it is related to the problem of whether $c_0$ has Kasparov and Yu's Property (H). Our results also apply to more general spaces other than $\ell_1$ such as spaces with unconditional bases which are not equivalent to the standard $c_0$ basis. Finally, we derive an asymptotic concentration inequality that must be satisfied by step preserving equi-uniformly continuous maps defined on the positive parts of these unit spheres.

Descriptive set theory of separable Fréchet spaces

In the past few decades, much has been done regarding the descriptive set theory of separable Banach spaces. However, the descriptive properties of separable Fréchet spaces have not yet been investigated. In these notes, we look at this problem, its relation with the (now standard) theory for separable Banach spaces, and we compute/estimate the descriptive complexity of some classical classes of separable Fréchet spaces such as Fréchet-Hilbert, Schwartz, nuclear, and Montel spaces. Our main result shows that the class of Montel spaces is complete coanalytic. Noticeably, this applies outside the realm of descriptive set theory and solves an old problem regarding Fréchet spaces satisfying the Heine--Borel property (i.e., Montel spaces). Precisely, we show that there is no separable Montel space containing isomorphic copies of all separable Montel spaces.

Flows on uniform Roe algebras

For a uniformly locally finite metric space $(X, d)$, we investigate \emph{coarse} flows on its uniform Roe algebra $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$, defined as one-parameter groups of automorphisms whose differentiable elements include all partial isometries arising from partial translations on $X$. We first show that any flow $σ$ on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ corresponds to a (possibly unbounded) self-adjoint operator $h$ on $\ell_2(X)$ such that $σ_t(a) = e^{ith} a e^{-ith}$ for all $t \in \mathbb{R}$, allowing us to focus on operators $h$ that generate flows on $ \mathrm{C}^*_u (X)$. Assuming Yu's property A, we prove that a self-adjoint operator $h$ on $\ell_2(X)$ induces a coarse flow on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ if and only if $h$ can be expressed as $h = a + d$, where $a \in \mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ and $d$ is a diagonal operator with entries forming a coarse function on $X$. We further study cocycle equivalence and cocycle perturbations of coarse flows, showing that, under property A, any coarse flow is a cocycle perturbation of a diagonal flow. Finally, for self-adjoint operators $h$ and $k$ that induce coarse flows on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$, we characterize conditions under which the associated flows are either cocycle perturbations of each other or cocycle conjugate. In particular, if $h - k$ is bounded, then the flow induced by $h$ is a cocycle perturbation of the flow induced by $k$.

On the small scale nonlinear theory of operator spaces

We initiate the study of the small scale geometry of operator spaces. The authors have previously shown that a map between operator spaces which is completely coarse (that is, the sequence of its amplifications is equi-coarse) must be $\mathbb R$-linear. We obtain a generalization of the aforementioned result to completely coarse maps defined on the unit ball of an operator space. By relaxing the condition to a small scale one, we prove that there are many non-linear examples of maps which are completely Lipshitz in small scale. We define a geometric parameter for homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces which imposes restrictions on the existence of such maps.

On the expansiveness of coarse maps between Banach spaces and geometry preservation

We introduce a new notion of embeddability between Banach spaces. By studying the classical Mazur map, we show that it is strictly weaker than the notion of coarse embeddability. We use the techniques from metric cotype introduced by M. Mendel and A. Naor to prove results about cotype preservation and complete our study of embeddability between $\ell_p$ spaces. We confront our notion with nonlinear invariants introduced by N. Kalton, which are defined in terms of concentration properties for Lipschitz maps defined on countably branching Hamming or interlaced graphs. Finally, we address the problem of the embeddability into $\ell_\infty$.

KMS states on uniform Roe algebras

We initiate the treatment of KMS states on uniform Roe algebras $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ for a class of naturally occurring flows on these algebras. We show that KMS states on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ always factor through the diagonal operators $\ell_\infty(X)$. We show the study of those states splits into understanding their strongly continuous KMS states and the KMS states which vanish on the ideal of compact operators. We show strongly continuous states are always unique when they exist and we give explicit formulas for them. We link the study of KMS states which vanish on the compacts to the Higson corona of $X$ and provide lower bounds for the cardinality of the set of extreme KMS states. Lastly, we apply our theory to the $n$-branching tree.

Coarse equivalence versus bijective coarse equivalence of expander graphs

We provide a characterization of when a coarse equivalence between coarse disjoint unions of expander graphs is close to a bijective coarse equivalence. We use this to show that if the uniform Roe algebras of coarse disjoint unions of expanders graphs are isomorphic, then the metric spaces must be bijectively coarsely equivalent.

Asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence

We introduce the notion of asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence of metric spaces. We show that it is strictly weaker than coarse Lipschitz equivalence. We study its impact on the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. Then we focus on Banach spaces. We prove that, for $2\leq p<\infty$, being linearly isomorphic to $\ell_p$ is stable under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences. Finally, we establish a version of the Gorelik principle in this setting and apply it to prove the stability of various properties of asymptotic uniform smoothness of Banach spaces under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences.

Embeddings of von Neumann algebras into uniform Roe algebras and quasi-local algebras

We study which von Neumann algebras can be embedded into uniform Roe algebras and quasi-local algebras associated to a uniformly locally finite metric space $X$. Under weak assumptions, these $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras contain embedded copies of $\prod_{k}\mathrm{M}_{n_k}(\mathbb C)$ for any \emph{bounded} countable (possibly finite) collection $(n_k)_k$ of natural numbers; we aim to show that they cannot contain any other von Neumann algebras. One of our main results shows that $L_\infty[0,1]$ does not embed into any of those algebras, even by a not-necessarily-normal $*$-homomorphism. In particular, it follows from the structure theory of von Neumann algebras that any von Neumann algebra which embeds into such algebra must be of the form $\prod_{k}\mathrm{M}_{n_k}(\mathbb C)$ for some countable (possibly finite) collection $(n_k)_k$ of natural numbers. Under additional assumptions, we also show that the sequence $(n_k)_k$ has to be bounded: in other words, the only embedded von Neumann algebras are the ``obvious'' ones.

Lipschitz geometry of operator spaces and Lipschitz-free operator spaces

We show that there is an operator space notion of Lipschitz embeddability between operator spaces which is strictly weaker than its linear counterpart but which is still strong enough to impose linear restrictions on operator space structures. This shows that there is a nontrivial theory of nonlinear geometry for operator spaces and it answers a question in [BCD21]. For that, we introduce the operator space version of Lipschitz-free Banach spaces and prove several properties of it. In particular, we show that separable operator spaces satisfy a sort of isometric Lipschitz-lifting property in the sense of G. Godefroy and N. Kalton. Gateaux differentiability of Lipschitz maps in the operator space category is also studied.

Coarse geometry of operator spaces and complete isomorphic embeddings into $\ell_1$ and $c_0$-sums of operator spaces

The nonlinear geometry of operator spaces has recently started to be investigated. Many notions of nonlinear embeddability have been introduced so far, but, as noticed before by other authors, it was not clear whether they could be considered ``correct notions''. The main goal of these notes is to provide the missing evidence to support that \emph{almost complete coarse embeddability} is ``a correct notion''. This is done by proving results about the complete isomorphic theory of $\ell_1$-sums of certain operators spaces. Several results on the complete isomorphic theory of $c_0$-sums of operator spaces are also obtained.

Support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras

We consider operators on $L^2$ spaces that expand the support of vectors in a manner controlled by some constraint function. The primary objects of study are $\mathrm C^*$-algebras that arise from suitable families of constraints, which we call support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras. In the discrete setting, support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras are classical uniform Roe algebras, and the continuous version featured here provides examples of "measurable" or "quantum" uniform Roe algebras as developed in a companion paper. We find that in contrast to the discrete setting, the poset of support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras inside $\mathcal B(L^2(\mathbb R))$ is extremely rich, with uncountable ascending chains, descending chains, and antichains.

Uniform Roe algebras of uniformly locally finite metric spaces are rigid

We show that if $X$ and $Y$ are uniformly locally finite metric spaces whose uniform Roe algebras, $\cstu(X)$ and $\cstu(Y)$, are isomorphic as \cstar-algebras, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent metric spaces. Moreover, we show that coarse equivalence between $X$ and $Y$ is equivalent to Morita equivalence between $\cstu(X)$ and $\cstu(Y)$. As an application, we obtain that if $Γ$ and $Λ$ are finitely generated groups, then the crossed products $\ell_\infty(Γ)\rtimes_rΓ$ and $ \ell_\infty(Λ)\rtimes_rΛ$ are isomorphic if and only if $Γ$ and $Λ$ are bi-Lipschitz equivalent.

Coarse quotients of metric spaces and embeddings of uniform Roe algebras

We study embeddings of uniform Roe algebras which have "large range" in their codomain and the relation of those with coarse quotients between metric spaces. Among other results, we show that if $Y$ has property A and there is an embedding $Φ:\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)\to \mathrm{C}^*_u(Y)$ with "large range" and so that $Φ(\ell_\infty(X))$ is a Cartan subalgebra of $\mathrm{C}^*_u(Y)$, then there is a bijective coarse quotient $X\to Y$. This shows that the large scale geometry of $Y$ is, in some sense, controlled by the one of $X$. For instance, if $X$ has finite asymptotic dimension, so does $Y$.

Towards a theory of coarse geometry of operator spaces

We introduce two notions of coarse embeddability between operator spaces: almost complete coarse embeddability of bounded subsets and spherically-complete coarse embeddability. We provide examples showing that these notions are strictly weaker than complete isomorphic embeddability - in fact, they do not even imply isomorphic embeddability. On the other hand, we show that, despite their nonlinearity, the existence of such embeddings provides restrictions on the linear operator space structures of the spaces. Examples of nonlinear equivalences between operator spaces are also provided.
