Invariant random compacts

For a compact metric space $X$ with a group $G$ acting on it continuously, an invariant random compact is a Borel probability measure on the space of nonempty compact subsets of $X$ that is invariant under the action of $G$. The action is IC-rigid if, with respect to every invariant random compact, every compact set is almost surely either finite or $X$. We give sufficient conditions for an action to be IC-rigid, and show there are natural examples of such actions. We further consider a notion of weak IC-rigidity, and prove that the Chacon system is weakly IC-rigid but not IC-rigid. As an application, we prove results concerning multiplicative largeness of dilations of sets on the circle.

A short proof of Erd\H{o}s's $B+C$ conjecture

We give a short proof of the fact that every set of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density contains the sum of two infinite sets. The approach simplifies earlier existing proofs.

Stable covers of subshifts

Given a dynamical system, a characteristic measure is a Borel probability measure invariant under all of its automorphisms. Frisch and Tamuz asked if every symbolic system supports such a measure. Motivated by this problem, we study the natural cover of a subshift by its shift of finite type approximations and two senses in which this cover can be said to stabilize. The first is in terms of entropy decay and the second in terms of periodic points. We show that the first type of stabilization gives a new characterization of the class of language stable shifts and demonstrates that there is a mechanism for producing a characteristic measures that relies only on entropy differences. For the second type of stabilization, we show that this defines a new class of subshifts, invariant under conjugacies, that have characteristic measures.

Ergodic averages and the large intersection property along IP sets

We study multiple ergodic averages along IP sets, meaning we restrict iterates in the averages to all finite sums of some infinite sequence of natural numbers. We give criteria for convergence and divergence in mean of these multiple averages and derive sufficient conditions for convergence to the projection onto the space of invariant functions. For a class of sequences that, roughly speaking, only have rational obstructions to such a limit, we show that the behavior is controlled by nilsystems. We also consider pointwise convergence, obtaining convergence and a formula for a set of functions on nilsystems that are dense in $L^2$. Finally, we show that certain correlations have optimally large intersections along an IP set

The Density Finite Sums Theorem

For any set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density and any $k\geq 1$, we show the existence of an infinite set $B\subset{\mathbb N}$ and a shift $t\geq0$ such that $A-t$ contains all sums of $m$ distinct elements from $B$ for all $m\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. This can be viewed as a density analog of Hindman's finite sums theorem. Our proof reveals the natural relationships among infinite sumsets, the dynamics underpinning arithmetic progressions, and homogeneous spaces of nilpotent Lie groups.

Bohr recurrence and density of non-lacunary semigroups of $\mathbb{N}$

A subset $R$ of integers is a set of Bohr recurrence if every rotation on $\mathbb{T}^d$ returns arbitrarily close to zero under some non-zero multiple of $R$. We show that the set $\{k!\, 2^m3^n\colon k,m,n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a set of Bohr recurrence. This is a particular case of a more general statement about images of such sets under any integer polynomial with zero constant term. We also show that if $P$ is a real polynomial with at least one non-constant irrational coefficient, then the set $\{P(2^m3^n)\colon m,n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is dense in $\mathbb{T}$, thus providing a joint generalization of two well-known results, one of Furstenberg and one of Weyl.

Chaotic almost minimal actions

Motivated by Furstenberg's Theorem on sets in the circle invariant under multiplication by a non-lacunary semigroup, we define a general class of dynamical systems possessing similar topological dynamical properties. We call such systems chaotic almost minimal, reflecting that these systems are chaotic, but in some sense are close to minimal. We study properties of the acting group needed to admit such an action, and show the existence of a chaotic almost minimal $\mathbb{Z}$-action. We show there exists chaotic almost minimal $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-actions which support multiple distinct nonatomic ergodic probability measures.

Infinite Sumsets in Sets with Positive Density

Motivated by questions asked by Erdos, we prove that any set $A\subset{\mathbb N}$ with positive upper density contains, for any $k\in{\mathbb N}$, a sumset $B_1+\cdots+B_k$, where $B_1,\dots,B_k\subset{\mathbb N}$ are infinite. Our proof uses ergodic theory and relies on structural results for measure preserving systems. Our techniques are new, even for the previously known case of $k=2$.

Problems on infinite sumset configurations in the integers and beyond

In contrast to finite arithmetic configurations, relatively little is known about which infinite patterns can be found in every set of natural numbers with positive density. Building on recent advances showing infinite sumsets can be found, we explore numerous open problems and obstructions to finding other infinite configurations in every set of natural numbers with positive density.

A proof of Erdős's $B+B+t$ conjecture

We show that every set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper density can be shifted to contain the restricted sumset $\{b_1 + b_2 : b_1, b_2\in B \text{ and } b_1 \neq b_2 \}$ for some infinite set $B \subset A$.

Strong Approximations of Shifts and the Characteristic Measures Problem

Every symbolic system supports a Borel measure that is invariant under the shift, but it is not known if every such systems supports a measure that is invariant under all of its automorphisms; known as a characteristic measure. We give sufficient conditions to find a characteristic measure, additionally showing when it can be taken to be a measure of maximal entropy. The class of systems to which these sufficient conditions apply is large, containing a dense $G_δ$ set in the space of all shifts on a given alphabet, and is also large in the sense that it is closed under taking factors. We also investigate natural systems to which these sufficient conditions apply.

Characteristic measures for language stable subshifts

We consider the problem of when a symbolic dynamical system supports a Borel probability measure that is invariant under every element of its automorphism group. It follows readily from a classical result of Parry that the full shift on finitely many symbols, and more generally any mixing subshift of finite type, supports such a measure. Frisch and Tamuz recently dubbed such measures characteristic, and further showed that every zero entropy subshift has a characteristic measure. While it remains open if every subshift over a finite alphabet has a characteristic measure, we define a new class of shifts, which we call language stable subshifts, and show that these shifts have characteristic measures. This is a large class that is generic in several senses and contains numerous positive entropy examples.

A prime system with many self-joinings

We construct a rigid, rank 1, prime transformation that is not quasi-simple and whose self-joinings form a Paulsen simplex. This seems to be the first example of a prime system whose self-joinings form a Paulsen simplex.

The complexity threshold for the emergence of Kakutani inequivalence

We show that linear complexity is the threshold for the emergence of Kakutani inequivalence for measurable systems supported on a minimal subshift. In particular, we show that there are minimal subshifts of arbitrarily low super-linear complexity that admit both loosely Bernoulli and non-loosely Bernoulli ergodic measures and that no minimal subshift with linear complexity can admit inequivalent measures.

Boshernitzan's condition, factor complexity, and an application

Boshernitzan found a decay condition on the measure of cylinder sets that implies unique ergodicity for minimal subshifts. Interest in the properties of subshifts satisfying this condition has grown recently, due to a connection with the study of discrete Schrödinger operators. Of particular interest is the question of how restrictive Boshernitzan's condition is. While it implies zero topological entropy, our main theorem shows how to construct minimal subshifts satisfying the condition whose factor complexity grows faster than any pre-assigned subexponential rate. As an application, via a theorem of Damanik and Lenz, we show that there is no subexponentially growing sequence for which the spectra of all discrete Schrödinger operators associated with subshifts whose complexity grows faster than the given sequence, have only finitely many gaps.

The stabilized automorphism group of a subshift

For a mixing shift of finite type, the associated automorphism group has a rich algebraic structure, and yet we have few criteria to distinguish when two such groups are isomorphic. We introduce a stabilization of the automorphism group, study its algebraic properties, and use them to distinguish many of the stabilized automorphism groups. We also show that for a full shift, the subgroup of the stabilized automorphism group generated by elements of finite order is simple, and that the stabilized automorphism group is an extension of a free abelian group of finite rank by this simple group.

Polygonal ${\mathbb Z}^2$-subshifts

Let ${\mathcal P}\subset{\mathbb Z}^2$ be a convex polygon with each vertex in it labeled by an element from a finite set and such that the labeling of each vertex $v\in {\mathcal P}$ is uniquely determined by the labeling of all other points in the polygon. We introduce a class of ${\mathbb Z}^2$-shift systems, the {\em polygonal shifts}, determined by such a polygon: these are shift systems such that the restriction of any $x\in X$ to some polygon ${\mathcal P}$ has this property. These polygonal systems are related to various well studied classes of shift systems, including subshifts of finite type and algebraic shifts, but include many other systems. We give necessary conditions for a ${\mathbb Z}^2$-system $X$ to be polygonal, in terms of the nonexpansive subspaces of $X$, and under further conditions can give a complete characterization for such systems.

Realizing ergodic properties in zero entropy subshifts

A subshift with linear block complexity has at most countably many ergodic measures, and we continue of the study of the relation between such complexity and the invariant measures. By constructing minimal subshifts whose block complexity is arbitrarily close to linear but has uncountably many ergodic measures, we show that this behavior fails as soon as the block complexity is superlinear. With a different construction, we show that there exists a minimal subshift with an ergodic measure whose slow entropy grows slower than any given rate tending to infinitely but faster than any other rate majorizing this one yet still growing subexponentially. These constructions lead to obstructions in using subshifts in applications to properties of the prime numbers and in finding a measurable version of the complexity gap that arises for shifts of sublinear complexity.
