Nuclear effective field theory on the lattice

In the low-energy region far below the chiral symmetry breaking scale (which is of the order of 1 GeV) chiral perturbation theory provides a model-independent approach for quantitative description of nuclear processes. In the two- and more-nucleon sector perturbation theory is applicable only at the level of an effective potential which serves as input in the corresponding dynamical equation. To deal with the resulting many-body problem we put chiral effective field theory (EFT) on the lattice. Here we present the results of our lattice EFT study up to next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. Accurate description of two-nucleon phase-shifts and ground state energy ratio of dilute neutron matter up to corrections of higher orders shows that lattice EFT is a promising tool for a quantitative description of low-energy few- and many-body systems.

Chiral effective field theory on the lattice at next-to-leading order

We study nucleon-nucleon scattering on the lattice at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. We determine phase shifts and mixing angles from the properties of two-nucleon standing waves induced by a hard spherical wall in the center-of-mass frame. At fixed lattice spacing we test model independence of the low-energy effective theory by computing next-to-leading-order corrections for two different leading-order lattice actions. The first leading-order action includes instantaneous one-pion exchange and same-site contact interactions. The second leading-order action includes instantaneous one-pion exchange and Gaussian-smeared interactions. We find that in each case the results at next-to-leading order are accurate up to corrections expected at higher order.

Dilute neutron matter on the lattice at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

We discuss lattice simulations of the ground state of dilute neutron matter at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. In a previous paper the coefficients of the next-to-leading-order lattice action were determined by matching nucleon-nucleon scattering data for momenta up to the pion mass. Here the same lattice action is used to simulate the ground state of up to 12 neutrons in a periodic cube using Monte Carlo. We explore the density range from 2% to 8% of normal nuclear density and analyze the ground state energy as an expansion about the unitarity limit with corrections due to finite scattering length, effective range, and P-wave interactions.

Two-particle scattering on the lattice: Phase shifts, spin-orbit coupling, and mixing angles

We determine two-particle scattering phase shifts and mixing angles for quantum theories defined with lattice regularization. The method is suitable for any nonrelativistic effective theory of point particles on the lattice. In the center-of-mass frame of the two-particle system we impose a hard spherical wall at some fixed large radius. For channels without partial-wave mixing the partial-wave phase shifts are determined from the energies of the nearly-spherical standing waves. For channels with partial-wave mixing further information is extracted by decomposing the standing wave at the wall boundary into spherical harmonics, and we solve coupled-channels equations to extract the phase shifts and mixing angles. The method is illustrated and tested by computing phase shifts and mixing angles on the lattice for spin-1/2 particles with an attractive Gaussian potential containing both central and tensor force parts.

Lattice Simulations for Light Nuclei: Chiral Effective Field Theory at Leading Order

We discuss lattice simulations of light nuclei at leading order in chiral effective field theory. Using lattice pion fields and auxiliary fields, we include the physics of instantaneous one-pion exchange and the leading-order S-wave contact interactions. We also consider higher-derivative contact interactions which adjust the S-wave scattering amplitude at higher momenta. By construction our lattice path integral is positive definite in the limit of exact Wigner SU(4) symmetry for any even number of nucleons. This SU(4) positivity and the approximate SU(4) symmetry of the low-energy interactions play an important role in suppressing sign and phase oscillations in Monte Carlo simulations. We assess the computational scaling of the lattice algorithm for light nuclei with up to eight nucleons and analyze in detail calculations of the deuteron, triton, and helium-4.

Automated Methods in Chiral Perturbation Theory on the Lattice

We present a method to automatically derive the Feynman rules for mesonic chiral perturbation theory with a lattice regulator. The Feynman rules can be output both in a human-readable format and in a form suitable for an automated numerical evaluation of lattice Feynman diagrams. The automated method significantly simplifies working with improved or extended actions. Some applications to the study of finite-volume effects will be presented.

Nuclear Lattice Simulations with Chiral Effective Field Theory

We study nuclear and neutron matter by combining chiral effective field theory with non-perturbative lattice methods. In our approach nucleons and pions are treated as point particles on a lattice. This allows us to probe larger volumes, lower temperatures, and greater nuclear densities than in lattice QCD. The low energy interactions of these particles are governed by chiral effective theory and operator coefficients are determined by fitting to zero temperature few-body scattering data. Any dependence on the lattice spacing can be understood from the renormalization group and absorbed by renormalizing operator coefficients. In this way we have a realistic simulation of many-body nuclear phenomena with no free parameters, a systematic expansion, and a clear theoretical connection to QCD. We present results for hot neutron matter at temperatures 20 to 40 MeV and densities below twice nuclear matter density.

Lattice regularized chiral perturbation theory

Chiral perturbation theory can be defined and regularized on a spacetime lattice. A few motivations are discussed here, and an explicit lattice Lagrangian is reviewed. A particular aspect of the connection between lattice chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD is explored through a study of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term.

The S Wave Pion Deuteron Scattering Length in Effective Field Theory

The S wave pion deuteron scattering length is presented at NLO in the Effective Field Theory formulation of the two nucleon system with perturbative pions. At this order, this observable is determined by the iso-scalar S wave pion nucleon scattering length a^+, by pion re-scattering contributions inside the deuteron and by two nucleon two pion contact interactions that involve two unknown parameters which renormalise the appearing divergences. By choosing their values accordingly and in agreement with their natural sizes predicted by the power counting, we are able to accommodate the available experimental data. However, a^+ cannot be determined from pion deuteron scattering directly. An ongoing experiment at PSI aiming to reduce the error bars by an order of magnitude will make it possible to pin down the size of these counter terms more accurately. We compare our findings to an approach in which pions are treated non-perturbatively.

Baryon magnetic moments and sigma terms in lattice-regularized chiral perturbation theory

An SU(3) chiral Lagrangian for the lightest decuplet of baryons is constructed on a discrete lattice of spacetime points, and is added to an existing lattice Lagrangian for the lightest octets of mesons and baryons. A nonzero lattice spacing renders all loop integrations finite, and the continuum limit of any physical observable is identical to the result obtained from dimensional regularization. Chiral symmetry and gauge invariance are preserved even at nonzero lattice spacing. Specific calculations discussed here include the non-renormalization of a conserved vector current, the magnetic moments of octet baryons, and the pi N and KN sigma terms that relate to the nucleon's strangeness content. The quantitative difference between physics at a nonzero lattice spacing and physics in the continuum limit is easily computed, and it represents an expectation for the size of discretization errors in corresponding lattice QCD simulations.

Eta-eta' mixing in U(3) chiral perturbation theory

We investigate eta-eta' mixing in infrared regularized U(3) chiral perturbation theory by calculating the eta and eta' masses up to one-loop order. From this analysis it becomes obvious that even at leading order eta-eta' mixing does not obey the usually assumed one-mixing angle scheme if large N_c counting rules are not employed.

Resonances in weak nonleptonic Omega^- decay

We examine the importance of J^P = 1/2^+, 1/2^- resonances for weak nonleptonic Omega^- decays within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. The spin-1/2 resonances are included into an effective theory and tree contributions to the Omega^- decays are calculated. We find significant contributions to the decay amplitudes and satisfactory agreement with experiment. This confirms and extends previous results wherein such spin-1/2 resonances were included in nonleptonic and radiative-nonleptonic hyperon decays.

Spherical gauge fields

We introduce the spherical field formalism for free gauge fields. We discuss the structure of the spherical Hamiltonian for both general covariant gauge and radial gauge and point out several new features not present in the scalar field case. We then use the evolution equations to compute gauge-field and field-strength correlators.

SU(3) Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and Long Distance Regularization

The use of SU(3) chiral perturbation theory in the analysis of low energy meson-baryon interactions is discussed. It is emphasized that short distance effects, arising from propagation of Goldstone bosons over distances smaller than a typical hadronic size, are model-dependent and can lead to a lack of convergence in the SU(3) chiral expansion if they are included in loop diagrams. In this paper we demonstrate how to remove such effects in a chirally consistent fashion by use of a cutoff and demonstrate that such removal ameliorates problems which have arisen in previous calculations due to large loop effects.
