Singularity links with exotic Stein fillings

In a recent paper of Akhmedov, Etnyre, Mark and Smith, it was shown that there exist infinitely many contact Seifert fibered 3-manifolds each of which admits infinitely many exotic (homeomorphic but pairwise non-diffeomorphic) simply-connected Stein fillings. Here we extend this result to a larger set of contact Seifert fibered 3-manifolds with many singular fibers and observe that these 3-manifolds are singularity links. In addition, we prove that the contact structures induced by the Stein fillings are the canonical contact structures on these singularity links. As a consequence, we verify a prediction of Andras Nemethi by providing examples of isolated complex surface singularities whose links with their canonical contact structures admitting infinitely many exotic simply-connected Stein fillings. Moreover, for infinitely many of these contact singularity links and for each positive integer n, we also construct an infinite family of exotic Stein fillings with fixed fundamental group $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}_n$.

Canonical contact structures on some singularity links

We identify the canonical contact structure on the link of a simple elliptic or cusp singularity by drawing a Legendrian handlebody diagram of one of its Stein fillings. We also show that the canonical contact structure on the link of a numerically Gorenstein surface singularity is trivial considered as a real plane bundle.

Exotic Stein fillings with arbitrary fundamental group

For any finitely presentable group $G$, we show the existence of an isolated complex surface singularity link which admits infinitely many exotic Stein fillings such that the fundamental group of each filling is isomorphic to $G$. We also provide an infinite family of closed exotic smooth four-manifolds with the fundamental group $G$ such that each member of the family admits a non-holomorphic Lefschetz fibration over the two-sphere.

Symplectic fillings of lens spaces as Lefschetz fibrations

We construct a positive allowable Lefschetz fibration over the disk on any minimal weak symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on a lens space. Using this construction we prove that any minimal symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on a lens space is obtained by a sequence of rational blowdowns from the minimal resolution of the corresponding complex two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularity.

On the relative Giroux correspondence

Recently, Honda, Kazez and Matic described an adapted partial open book of a compact contact 3-manifold with convex boundary by generalizing the work of Giroux in the closed case. They also implicitly established a one-to-one correspondence between isomorphism classes of partial open book decompositions modulo positive stabilization and isomorphism classes of compact contact 3-manifolds with convex boundary. In this expository article we explicate the relative version of Giroux correspondence.

Milnor fillable contact structures are universally tight

We show that the canonical contact structure on the link of a normal complex singularity is universally tight. As a corollary we show the existence of closed, oriented, atoroidal 3-manifolds with infinite fundamental groups which carry universally tight contact structures that are not deformations of taut (or Reebless) foliations. This answers two questions of Etnyre.

On the Heegaard genus of contact 3-manifolds

It is well-known that Heegaard genus is additive under connected sum of 3-manifolds. We show that Heegaard genus of contact 3-manifolds is not necessarily additive under contact connected sum. We also prove some basic properties of the contact genus (a.k.a. open book genus) of 3-manifolds, and compute this invariant for some 3-manifolds.

Milnor open books of links of some rational surface singularities

We describe Milnor open books and Legendrian surgery diagrams for canonical contact structures of links of some rational surface singularities. We also describe an infinite family of Milnor fillable contact 3-manifolds so that the Milnor genus (resp. Milnor norm) is strictly greater than the support genus (resp. support norm) of the canonical contact structure, for each member of this family.

Full Lutz twist along the binding of an open book

Let $T$ denote a binding component of an open book $(Σ, ϕ)$ compatible with a closed contact 3-manifold $(M, ξ)$. We describe an explicit open book $(Σ', ϕ')$ compatible with $(M, ζ)$, where $ζ$ is the contact structure obtained from $ξ$ by performing a full Lutz twist along $T$. Here, $(Σ', ϕ')$ is obtained from $(Σ, ϕ)$ by a \emph{local} modification near the binding.

Contact handle decompositions

We review Giroux's contact handles and contact handle attachments in dimension three and show that a bypass attachment consists of a pair of contact 1 and 2-handles. As an application we describe explicit contact handle decompositions of infinitely many pairwise non-isotopic overtwisted 3-spheres. We also give an alternative proof of the fact that every compact contact 3-manifold (closed or with convex boundary) admits a contact handle decomposition, which is a result originally due to Giroux.

Partial open book decompositions and the contact class in sutured Floer homology

We demonstrate how to combinatorially calculate the EH-class of a compatible contact structure in the sutured Floer homology group of a balanced sutured three manifold which is associated to an abstract partial open book decomposition. As an application we show that every contact three manifold (closed or with convex boundary) can be obtained by gluing tight contact handlebodies whose EH-classes are nontrivial.

On the contact Ozsvath-Szabo invariant

Sarkar and Wang proved that the hat version of Heegaard Floer homology group of a closed oriented 3-manifold is combinatorial starting from an arbitrary nice Heegaard diagram and in fact every closed oriented 3-manifold admits such a Heegaard diagram. Plamenevskaya showed that the contact Ozsvath-Szabo invariant is combinatorial once we are given an open book decomposition compatible with a contact structure. The idea is to combine the algorithm of Sarkar and Wang with the recent description of the contact Ozsvath-Szabo invariant due to Honda, Kazez and Matic. Here we simply observe that the hat version of the Heegaard Floer homology group and the contact Ozsvath-Szabo invariant in this group can be combinatorially calculated starting from a contact surgery diagram. We give detailed examples pointing out to some shortcuts in the computations.

Open books and plumbings

We construct, somewhat non-standard, Legendrian surgery diagrams for some Stein fillable contact structures on some plumbing trees of circle bundles over spheres. We then show how to put such a surgery diagram on the pages of an open book for $S^3,$ with relatively low genus. Thus we produce open books with low genus pages supporting these Stein fillable contact structures, and in many cases it can be shown that these open books have minimal genus pages.

Surgery diagrams for horizontal contact structures

We describe Legendrian surgery diagrams for some horizontal contact structures on non-positive plumbing trees of oriented circle bundles over spheres with negative Euler numbers. As an application we determine Milnor fillable contact structures on some Milnor fillable 3-manifolds.

Invariants of contact structures from open books

In this note we define three invariants of contact structures in terms of open books supporting the contact structures. These invariants are the support genus (which is the minimal genus of a page of a supporting open book for the contact structure), the binding number (which is the minimal number of binding components of a supporting open book for the contact structure with minimal genus pages) and the norm (which is minus the maximal Euler characteristic of a page of a supporting open book).

Explicit horizontal open books on some Seifert fibered 3--manifolds

We describe explicit horizontal open books on some Seifert fibered 3--manifolds. We show that the contact structures compatible with these horizontal open books are Stein fillable and horizontal as well. Moreover we draw surgery diagrams for some of these contact structures.

On sections of elliptic fibrations

We find a new relation among right-handed Dehn twists in the mapping class group of a $k$-holed torus for $4 \leq k \leq 9$. This relation induces an elliptic Lefschetz pencil structure on the four-manifold \cp $#(9-k)$ \cpb $ $ with $k$ base points and twelve singular fibers. By blowing up the base points we get an elliptic Lefschetz fibration on the complex elliptic surface $E(1)=$ \cp $#9$ \cpb $ \to S^2$ with twelve singular fibers and $k$ disjoint sections. More importantly we can locate these $k$ sections in a Kirby diagram of the induced elliptic Lefschetz fibration. The $n$-th power of our relation gives an explicit description for $k$ disjoint sections of the induced elliptic fibration on the complex elliptic surface $E(n) \to S^2$ for $n \geq 1$.

Explicit horizontal open books on some plumbings

We describe explicit open books on arbitrary plumbings of oriented circle bundles over closed oriented surfaces. We show that, for a non-positive plumbing, the open book we construct is horizontal and the corresponding compatible contact structure is also horizontal and Stein fillable. In particular, we describe horizontal open books on some Seifert fibered 3--manifolds. As another application we describe horizontal open books isomorphic to Milnor open books for some complex surface singularities. Moreover we give examples of tight contact 3--manifolds supported by planar open books. As a consequence the Weinstein conjecture holds for these tight contact structures.
