The Inhomogeneous Phase of Dense Skyrmion Matter

It was predicted qualitatively in ref.[1] that skyrmion matter at low density is stable in an inhomogeneous phase where skyrmions condensate into lumps while the remaining space is mostly empty. The aim of this paper is to proof quantitatively this prediction. In order to construct an inhomogeneous medium we distort the original FCC crystal to produce a phase of planar structures made of skyrmions. We implement mathematically these planar structures by means of the 't Hooft instanton solution using the Atiyah-Manton ansatz. The results of our calculation of the average density and energy confirm the prediction suggesting that the phase diagram of the dense skyrmion matter is a lot more complex than a simple phase transition from the skyrmion FCC crystal lattice to the half-skyrmion CC one. Our results show that skyrmion matter shares common properties with standard nuclear matter developing a skin and leading to a binding energy equation which resembles the Weiszaecker mass formula.

Dense baryonic matter in conformally-compensated hidden local symmetry: Vector manifestation and chiral symmetry restoration

We find that, when the dilaton is implemented as a (pseudo-)Nambu-Goldstone boson using a conformal compensator or "conformon" in a hidden gauge symmetric Lagrangian written to $O(p^4)$ from which baryons arise as solitons, namely, skyrmions, the vector manifestation and chiral symmetry restoration at high density predicted in hidden local symmetry theory --- which is consistent with Brown-Rho scaling --- are lost or sent to infinite density. It is shown that they can be restored if in medium the behavior of the $ω$ field is taken to deviate from that of the $ρ$ meson in such a way that the flavor $U(2)$ symmetry is strongly broken at increasing density. The hitherto unexposed crucial role of the $ω$ meson in the structure of elementary baryon and multibaryon systems is uncovered in this work. In the state of half-skyrmions to which the skyrmions transform at a density $n_{1/2}^{} \gtrsim n_0^{}$ (where $n_0^{}$ is the normal nuclear matter density), characterized by the vanishing (space averaged) quark condensate but nonzero pion decay constant, the nucleon mass remains more or less constant at a value $\gtrsim$ 60 \% of the vacuum value indicating a large component of the nucleon mass that is not associated with the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. We discuss its connection to the chiral-invariant mass $m_0^{}$ that figures in the parity-doublet baryon model.

The soliton-soliton interaction in the Chiral Dilaton Model

We study the interaction between two B = 1 states in the Chiral Dilaton Model where baryons are described as non-topological solitons arising from the interaction of chiral mesons and quarks. By using the hedgehog solution for the B = 1 states we construct, via a product ansatz, three possible B = 2 configurations to analyse the role of the relative orientation of the hedgehog quills in the dynamics of the soliton-soliton interaction and investigate the behaviour of these solutions in the range of long/intermediate distance. One of the solutions is quite binding due to the dynamics of the π and σ fields at intermediate distance and should be used for nuclear matter studies. Since the product ansatz breaks down as the two solitons get close, we explore the short range distance regime with a model that describes the interaction via a six-quark bag ansatz. We calculate the interaction energy as a function of the inter-soliton distance and show that for small separations the six quarks bag, assuming a hedgehog structure, provides a stable bound state that at large separations connects with a special configuration coming from the product ansatz.

Dense Baryonic Matter in Hidden Local Symmetry Approach: Half-Skyrmions and Nucleon Mass

Hadron properties in dense medium are treated in a unified way in a skyrmion model constructed with an effective Lagrangian, in which the rho and omega vector mesons are introduced as hidden gauge bosons, valid up to O(p^4) terms in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. All the low energy constants - apart from f_pi and m_rho - are fixed by the master formula derived from the relation between 5-D hQCD and 4-D HLS. This allows one to pin down the density n_1/2 at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions, bringing in a drastic change in the EoS of dense matter. We find that the U(1) field that figures in the CS term in the hQCD action or equivalently the omega field in the hWZ term in the dimensionally reduced HLS action plays a crucial role in the half-skyrmion phase. The importance of the omega degree of freedom may be connected to what happens in the instanton structure of elementary baryon noticed in hQCD. The most striking and intriguing in what is found in the model is that f_pi that smoothly drops with increasing density in the skyrmion phase stops decreasing at n_1/2 and remains nearly constant in the half-skyrmion phase. In accordance with the large N_c consideration, the baryon mass also stays non-scaling in the half-skyrmion phase. This feature which is reminiscent of the parity-doublet baryon model with a chirally invariant mass m_0 is supported by the nuclear EFT with the parameters of the Lagrangian scaling modified at the skyrmion-half-skyrmion phase transition. It also matches with one-loop RG analysis based on HLS. A link between a non-vanishing m_0 and the origin of nucleon mass distinctive from dynamically generated mass is suggested. We briefly discuss the possible consequences of the topology change found in this paper on the forthcoming experiments at the RIB machines under construction.

Baryonic Matter in the Hidden Local Symmetry Induced from Holographic QCD Models

Baryonic matter is studied in the Skyrme model by taking into account the roles of $π,$ $ρ$, and $ω$ mesons through the hidden local symmetry up to $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ terms including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino (hWZ) terms. Using the master formulas for the low energy constants derived from holographic QCD models the skyrmion matter properties can be quantitatively calculated with the input values of the pion decay constant $f_π$ and the vector meson mass $m_ρ^{}$. We find that the hWZ terms are responsible for the repulsive interactions of the $ω$ meson. In addition, the self-consistently included $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ terms with the hWZ terms is found to increase the half skyrmion phase transition point above the normal nucleon density.

Hidden Local Symmetry and Infinite Tower of Vector Mesons for Baryons

In an effort to access dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars in a unified framework that handles both single baryon and multibaryon systems on the same footing, we first address a holographic dual action for a single baryon focusing on the role of the infinite tower of vector mesons deconstructed from five dimensions. To leading order in 't Hooft coupling $λ=N_c g_{\rm YM}^2$, one has the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Skyrmion that results when the warping of the bulk background and the Chern-Simons term in the Sakai-Sugimoto D4/D8-${\bar{\rm D8}}$ model are ignored. The infinite tower was found by Sutcliffe to induce flow to a conformal theory, i.e., the BPS. We compare this structure to that of the SS model consisting of a 5D Yang-Mills action in warped space and the Chern-Simons term in which higher vector mesons are integrated out while preserving hidden local symmetry and valid to $O(λ^0)$ and $O(p^4)$ in the chiral counting. We point out the surprisingly important role of the $ω$ meson that figures in the Chern-Simons term that encodes chiral anomaly in the baryon structure and that may be closely tied to short-range repulsion in nuclear interactions.

The baryon number two system in the Chiral Soliton Model

We study the interaction between two B = 1 states in a Chiral Soliton Model where baryons are described as non-topological solitons. By using the hedgehog solution for the B = 1 states we construct three possible B = 2 configurations to analyze the role of the relative orientation of the hedgehog quills in the dynamics. The strong dependence of the intersoliton interaction on these relative orientations reveals that studies of dense hadronic matter using this model should take into account their implications.

Half-Skyrmions, Tensor Forces and Symmetry Energy in Cold Dense Matter

In a previous article, the 4D half-skyrmion (or 5D dyonic salt) structure of dense baryonic matter described in crystalline configuration in the large $N_c$ limit was shown to impact nontrivially on how anti-kaons behave in compressed nuclear matter with a possible implication on an "ice-9" phenomenon of deeply bound kaonic matter and condensed kaons in compact stars. We extend the analysis to make a further prediction on the scaling properties of hadrons that have a surprising effect on the nuclear tensor forces, the symmetry energy and hence on the phase structure at high density. We treat this problem relying on certain topological structure of chiral solitons. Combined with what can be deduced from hidden local symmetry for hadrons in dense medium and the "soft" dilatonic degree of freedom associated with the trace anomaly of QCD, we uncover a novel structure of chiral symmetry in the "supersoft" symmetry energy that can influence the structure of neutron stars.

Kaons in Dense Half-Skyrmion Matter

Dense hadronic matter at low temperature is expected to be in crystal and at high density make a transition to a {\em chirally restored but color-confined} state which is a novel phase hitherto unexplored. This phase transition is predicted in both skyrmion matter in 4D and instanton matter in 5D, the former in the form of half-skyrmions and the latter in the form of half-instantons or dyons. We predict that when $K^-$'s are embedded in this half-skyrmion or half-instanton (dyonic) matter which may be reached not far above the normal density, there arises an enhanced attraction from the soft dilaton field figuring for the trace anomaly of QCD and the Wess-Zumino term. This attraction may have relevance for a possible strong binding of anti-kaons in dense nuclear matter and for kaon condensation in neutron-star matter. Such kaon property in the half-skyrmion phase is highly non-perturbarive and may not be accessible by low-order chiral perturbation theory. Relevance of the half-skyrmion or dyonic matter to compact stars is discussed.

Skyrmion approach to finite density and temperature

We review an approach, developed over the past few years, to describe hadronic matter at finite density and temperature, whose underlying theoretical framework is the Skyrme model, an effective low energy theory rooted in large $N_c$ QCD. In this approach matter is described by various crystal structures of skyrmions, classical topological solitons carrying baryon number, from which conventional baryons appear by quantization. Chiral and scale symmetries play a crucial role in the dynamics as described by pion, dilaton and vector meson degrees of freedom. When compressed or heated skyrmion matter describes a rich phase diagram which has strong connections with the confinement/deconfinement phase transition.

Skyrmions at finite density and temperature: the chiral phase transition

The Skyrme model, an effective low energy theory rooted in large $N_c$ QCD, has been applied to the study of dense matter. Matter is described by various crystal structures of skyrmions. When this system is heated, the dominating thermal degrees of freedom are the fluctuating pions. Taking these mechanisms jointly produces a description of the chiral phase transition leading to the conventional phase diagram with critical temperatures and densities in agreement with expected values.

The Role of the Dilaton in Dense Skyrmion Matter

In this note, we report on a remarkable and surprising interplay between the omega meson and the dilaton chi in the structure of a single skyrmion as well as in the phase structure of dense skyrmion matter which may have a potentially important consequence on the properties of compact stars. In our continuing effort to understand hadronic matter at high density, we have developed a unified field theoretic formalism for dense skyrmion matter using a single Lagrangian to describe simultaneously both matter and meson fluctuations and studied in-medium properties of hadrons. The effective theory used is the Skyrme model Lagrangian gauged with the vector mesons rho and omega, implemented with the dilaton field that describes the spontaneously broken scale symmetry of QCD, in a form consistent with the symmetries of QCD and our expectations regarding the high density limit. We analyze the restoration of scale invariance and chiral symmetry as the density of the system increases. In order to preserve the restoration of scale symmetry and chiral symmetry, signalled in our case by the vanishing of the expectation value of the dilaton, and to be consistent with the vector manifestation of hidden local symmetry, a density dependent omega coupling is introduced. We uncover the crucial role played by both the dilaton and the omega meson in the phase structure of dense medium and discover how two different phase transition regimes arise as we dial the dilaton mass.

Neutral pion decay into $ν\barν$ in dense skyrmion matter

We study the weak decay of the neutral pion to a neutrino-antineutrino pair, $π^0\to ν\barν$, in the Skyrme model. In baryon free-space the process is forbidden by helicity while in a dense baryonic medium, the process becomes possible already to leading order in $G_F$ due to the break-down of Lorentz symmetry in the background medium.

Neutral pion decay in dense skyrmion matter

We study the density dependence of the decay $π^0\to γγ$ using the Skyrme Lagrangian to describe simultaneously both the matter background and mesonic fluctuations. Pion properties such as mass and decay constant are modified by the medium. This leads to large suppression at high density of both photo-production from the neutral pion and the reverse process. The in-medium effective charge of $π^{\pm}$ are also discussed in the same framework.

Kaon-Soliton Bound State Approach to the Pentaquark States

We show that in hidden local symmetry theory with the vector manifestation (VM), a K^+ can be bound to skyrmion to give the Theta^+ pentaquark with spin 1/2 and even parity which is consistent with large N_c counting. The vector meson K^* subject to the VM in the chiral limit plays an essential role in inducing the binding.

Unified Approach to Dense Matter

We apply the Skyrme model to dense hadronic matter, which provides a unified approach to high density, valid in the large Nc limit. In our picture, dense hadronic matter is described by the classical soliton configuration with minimum energy for the given baryon number density. By incorporating the meson fluctuations on such ground state we obtain an effective Lagrangian for meson dynamics in a dense medium. Our starting point has been the Skyrme model defined in terms of pions, thereafter we have extended and improved the model by incorporating other degrees of freedom such as dilaton, kaons and vector mesons.

The Pion Velocity in Dense Skyrmion Matter

We have developed a field theory formalism to calculate $in$-$medium$ properties of hadrons within a unified approach that exploits a single Lagrangian to describe simultaneously both matter background and meson fluctuations. In this paper we discuss the consequences on physical observables of a possible phase transition of hadronic matter taking place in the chiral limit. We pay special attention to the pion velocity $v_π$, which controls, through a dispersion relation, the pion propagation in the hadronic medium. The $v_π$ is defined in terms of parameters related to the matrix element in matter of the axial-vector current, namely, the in-medium pion decay constants, $f_t$ and $f_s$. Both of the pion decay constants change dramatically with density and even vanish in the chiral limit when chiral symmetry is restored, but the pion velocity does not go to zero, decreasing at most 10% over the whole density range studied. A possible pseudogap structure is indicated.
